Our fireplace chimney was leaking every time it rained. We use Mad Hatter when we have our chimney cleaned, about every 5 years. They came out and did an estimate. About a week later did the repair. So far no more leaks in the chimney. I thought they were a little expensive, but I know they've been in business for years so they should know what they are doing. Very happy with the customer service. Requested an estimate. It was written out and explained thoroughly even photos of the chimney's and given explanation on what was and wasn't needed. Given options on how to fix one chimney and explained how to operate the newer fireplace. Hired on the spot and having them return in a few weeks to complete the requested work. This is a great company. I have hired them on many occasions to check and clean fireplaces in rental homes that I own. Had all of our vents and returns cleaned and sanitized. Great service, quick, efficient, and through. Had a quote over the phone and an appointment scheduled within a couple days. Two young men showed up and got a quick overview of where all the lines were located and they got right to work. I had asked a few questions here and there and they were very helpful with their answers. This house was over 100 years old and I am sure this was never done in the past... I was tempted to replace all the venting... but felt good about the cleaning they did to the existing lines. We used the Mad Hatter last fall to clean the chimney and drier vents as soon as we moved into our home. Their service was very prompt. We did have some issues with the technician that came out, but when the owner came back to handle some of our more technical problems he was very apologetic and fixed it up. I called The Mad Hatter because we had water leaking into our fireplace. After about 3 weeks of rescheduling we were able to link up. They would only come when they had a job in the local area. Upon arriving they determined my water leaking and chimney deterioration was caused by the brick being painted. Their only option was to rebuild the chimney. I was originally told there would be a fee of $109 to come out to my home. I had a coupon so I was only charged $89. I was told I would receive a quote by email for the chimney rebuild. I have never been charged by a contractor to quote for a job. The two men were at my home for less than 30 minutes. I have yet to receive the quote. I will be getting a second opinion. read more

We used the company 7 years ago to clean and inspect our fireplace and were happy with the results. Seven years later we needed to get our chimney cleaned and the gas starter checked/replaced along with a damper clamp installed. So we called them again, their service was awesome arrived on time and very professional. And the actual cost was lower then what was originally quoted which was fantastic. I called them up because I saw one of their mailer advertisements. They said that they could not schedule a concrete appointment in my area since it's based on their crew's convenience. Told me they'd be coming out in the next week and would call me to discuss the chimney repair quote. They never showed up and I never got a call back. the very bad company i used to trust it for 35 years, but now it's been bought out and they do not do what they say. do not give them anything. the tech guy said godby will do what you need. they were about 45 minutes late no phone call. they do not clean the chimney or clean the fireplace. the tech said he can not do that anymore they check the wood they do not do gas fireplaces. they were here to see if flights were up he took fiur picture of the inside and the flue and did not do anything else they took me for 1999.00 they do not say what they can do.. He told me to follow a complaint to his boss. i tried the lady answer the phone and said i could not talk to a manager they sold the company and hires new people that are not trained. people are not trained. they got rid of thier files and clients. i tried to call back and was hung up on four 4 pictures 199.00 that a lot of money he told me to call a duct cleaner serivce or he recoommend two other chimney places. .all i ask is my money back to get someone else read more

I had an appointment to have our chimney swept out at noon on a Tuesday. It happened to be the same day as the first big snow fall of the year!!!! The roads were terrible but Roger showed up early and was FANTASTIC! He was very pleasant and conversational! He was courteous and even made sure to wipe off his boots of water and snow before coming in the house! He wasn't pushy at all and wrote down estimates and recommendations for future work should we choose to have that done! He left the chimney and the area surrounding it pristine! The college aged (?) male who showed up was clearly inexperienced. We had to have the service redone by Ely Stokes. When the man from Ely Stokes first put his brush up the supposedly freshly cleaned chimney, soot just rained down. We called Mad Hatter to express our concerns but did not received a satisfactory response. read more

We called Mad Hatter to do a chimney sweep and inspection.. The guy showed up as planned and was complete in less the 10 mins..charged me 160 dollars for less then 10 mins of work and could not answer any of my questions.. in addition He could not give an estimate on a chimney cap but took pictures telling us his boss would call... A few days later we called.. his boss could not give a estimate either based on the pictures said he could come out but there would be a charge for that.. then we never heard from them again... read more

Deceitful. On 20 June I paid $99 for an assessment for a chimney rebuild, and Warren came to my property and provided me a reasonable quote for $3750. After comparing other bids, I called Warren on 3 July and scheduled the work to start on 30 July. The $99 would be credited towards the job. On 26 July Dennis called me and said Warren had erred, and the job would cost $5091 (a 35% increase). When I asked to meet, discuss and negotiate, he refused. Take it or leave it. I received a revised job quote via email reflecting the $1341 increase, and they had back dated it to 3 July. I visited the office on 27 July to discuss the situation, but the admin, Leeann, would only agree to refund me the $99. She sent a "credit memo" via email, but it has not posted to my credit card and, frankly, I will be surprised if it does. Don't waste your time with this dishonest organization. They're not worth the risk. read more

After talking extensively with the owner of Mad Hatter and his review of photos taken during the camera inspection along with the report, they stood by their original assessment of the fireplace, which is to say that they found it to be code compliant. The owner was prompt in getting back with me and we talked at length about whether or not a scam was in place and whether or not the other person was a certified chimney sweep who did the work. read more

I paid the fee for an inspection when I just wanted a chimney cap. they quoted a price over the telephone but once here they wanted over $100 more because the chimney was so high. Its just a normal 2 story house and not unusual. I went ahead and had them install the cap but it does not close tightly and still allows a down draft. This was supposed to stop the down draft. I called to have it fixed but they want another $99 just to come out and look at it. I declined. I will find someone else to adjust it. read more
