Leelanau county is home to a plethora of wonderful restaurants with beautiful settings, expert service, and outstanding locally sourced food. The Manor is not one of those restaurants. I had dinner at there last night and the experience my family and I had was nothing short of a train wreck. For a restaurant trying to showcase its strengths (it was restaurant weekend) this was a mind boggling experience from beginning to end. First - the service. We were seated. And we waited. After about 20 minutes, and the whole of our table chomping on the ice in our water glasses, our drink order began. The server had no idea if a 'beer list' existed, but assured one of the guests that there were 'a lot of new beers' after a common Michigan IPA was ordered. The rest of the drink order was placed, and we waited. And waited. After about 15 more minutes the 'special' beer that was requested came out. Alone. 5 minutes later, drink #2. After 5 more minutes, drink #3. It is possible that a) the restaurant did not allow trays or b) the server had an injury that prevented them from carrying two things at once - but you get the picture. Service for the rest of the dinner was as expected after waiting an hour to get a table of drinks. Next - the food. I don't next to expand my thoughts on this. I would have rather ate cold pizza from a frat house floor with a side of day old ranch for dipping sauce. Nothing at our table was edible. The pork was dry with rehydrated chutney on top, the duck was effectively shredded cardboard compact into the shape of a duck. And the Parmesan whitefish? Was it even whitefish? I can't think about it anymore. Lobster bisque? You mean lobster bisquick! It was the consistency of pancake batter, lacking that familiar pink hue that has accompanied the dozens of other lobster bisques I've enjoyed. Maybe they mixed it up with seafood chowder? I don't know. The wedge salad. Pretty simple, pretty safe. A solid 'go-to' right? Not at El Manor. The bleu cheese dressing may have been ranch... It was hard to tell - but you know what wasn't hard to tell? That the army of bacon bits at the top were undoubtedly Bac O's ... That all too familiar, spice canister dispensed collection of dehydrated bacon (or maybe fake bacon). I didn't know they even made Bac O's anymore! My dish came with broccoli. 'Is it steamed?' I asked? 'Boiled.' the server said. Boiled? I'm no Julia child's but I've never heard of that particular method of preparation used for broccoli. I got that particular dish (the duck with broccoli) and when it arrived I immediately reached for the salt and pepper, but there were none to be found. No salt and pepper on the table! I was stuck with my corrugated duck and tasteless florets. Sad face. I noticed a previous poster described their desert as 'vanilla pudding with caramelized sugar' - that's a pretty clever and accurate description. Definitively NOT creme brûlée. Even the rolls appeared to have crawled right out of the freezer. Eventually the evening came to an end. Thank god, because this experience was excruciating from beginning to end. Reservations are recommended. (Quick tip: ask for a table next to the windows) So what would you eat while you're visiting Pure Michigan? Why whitefish and perch of course! I would recommend both as the perfect entrees to match your view through The Manor's picture window. The restaurant is set in a historic 100-year-old hotel, close to the shores of beautiful Glen Lake. If you need a private room, several are available. We started our meal with the shrimp cocktail; wish that the shrimp were a bit larger. I'd much rather have fewer quality shrimp than a bunch of tiny pieces. The homemade tomato soup was amazing! Fresh with the perfect balance of cream and tomato. Love it when the chef takes advantage of seasonal veggies. The perch dinner offered a very generous serving of perch, which were lightly fried to perfection. The chef definitely has experience cooking up these little delicacies. And I would say that this restaurant offers one of the biggest portion of perch in all of Traverse City/Leelanau county. (Am I wrong? please let me know of another place) Their signature dish is the white fish dinner and it is absolutely amazing! The biggest hunk of white fish that I've seen served at any restaurant! Fresh and from Carlson's in Leland, need I say more? Perfectly prepared. I'm still thinking about this meal! So how can this place improve to 5-stars? The atmosphere could use a make-over. I'd love to see a total renovation, rip up the carpeting, and do something with the table arrangements. (Less is best) It was a bit cramped to maneuver around the tables. We drove past The Manor on our way to the Sleeping Bear Dunes. It wasn't open in the morning when we passed yet, but we decided to drive past it again on our way back from the dunes. What a great place to have lunch! Right by the lake, lovely trees and a good view on the dunes. We sat outside in the garden and had fantastic service from Ruth Ann during lunch. I ordered a grilled vegetable wrap and my friend ordered Eggs Benedict. We both had coffee. All of it was excellent!!! Ruth Ann told us all about the area, the vineyards and gave us a little wine to taste from a local winery. We will definitely recommend this to our friends and return next time we are here. read more

We were a party of eight - everything was delicious. I had seafood lasagna. Others had chicken, ribs and beef. Service was friendly. The outside could use some sprucing up but the inside is great. Their service is very slow and the portions are small for the prices. And when my son ordered chicken tenders he got chicken nuggets.

We probably should have turned around when we came to the limbs and bark partly blocking the front sidewalk and the "help wanted" sign in the front window, but we didn't. We probably should have left when, in a dining room half full we hadn't gotten menus for more than 1/2 hour, but we didn't. The first course for 3 of the 4 of us was Lobster Bisque and was at best very pedestrian. The main course for 3 of the 4 of us -roast duck- was lacking in presentation and flavor and was served with bland broccoli and over cooked rice. Desert for half of us appeared to be vanilla pudding with a carmelized crust instead of crem brûlée. The other half had frozen, chocolate covered ice cream balls that could have come straight from a Schwanns truck. This restaurant has a lot to work on. The location is beautiful but the site, food and service need a LOT of work, especially in an area with so many good restaurants. read more

We summer up in Glen Lake. We often eat here. The food is wonderful, the setting can't be beat. We enjoy the Broasted Chicken and the Duck. We would recommend this restaurant to anyone who would like to enjoy a special night out. The prices are very reasonable. This is our "go-to-place" when we have company visiting us! The reviews from May 2016 are pretty much spot on. We just ate there and had the most bizarre experience. The speed of service was not necessarily slow, just really strange. The food ranged from ok to pretty bad. read more
