When the ice cream shop in Beulah ran out of butter pecan, we went down the road to Benzonia, and I'm so glad we did. Excellent service and about 15 kinds of homemade ice cream. Worked there for a while. They don't mark their products with proper dating and a lot of times that makes it so things like tea and milk are open longer than they should be. Boba never gets dated either, just refilled. Be careful, I've seen mold in the boba tea before. Super gross!​ read more

This is the best ice cream spot in the Beulah/Benzonia area! They make their own ice cream and waffle cones and they are fantastic. Tonight I had chocolate peanut butter with a homemade cone. My son had Superman and my hubs the mint chocolate chip. We all thoroughly enjoyed what we ordered and the service was friendly and knowledgeable. They even have a drive though! I have had other treats here as well including their chocolate malt which was excellent. read more

Excellent ice cream, definitely among the best I've ever had. I had a waffle cone with one scoop chocolate covered strawberry and one scoop chocolate chocolate chip. The strawberry ice cream was delicious and fresh tasting, the chocolate chips were decadent, and the chocolate ice cream was rich and velvety. Oh my goodness. Went back the next day and tried the mint brownie ice cream--it wasn't nearly as good, but still very tasty (just not quite minty enough for me). Go with the flavors that feature local fruit--you will definitely taste the difference. Since the ice cream is made in-house, they feature different flavors; even though I was there two days in a row, the flavors available were slightly different each time. Service was friendly and upbeat, and the price was fair for the quality. Too bad I was only in town for a few days--I would have loved to try some of the other items on the menu. read more

I'd love to give Hill Top a higher rating, but I just can't. Yes, the ice cream is creamy and very tasty. If you want my rating of that, then it's 4.5 stars. Why the half star off? The mint chocolate chip is flavored not with peppermint, but with spearmint. Yeah, spearmint. It was kind of like brushing my teeth with really creamy toothpaste. It was OK, just really odd. Now, why the 3-star rating. Customer service. We saw four different staff and the owner. The paid high school staffers we dealt with each started with a quick forced smile and checked out. The owner didn't acknowledge that there were customers in the shop at all. It was just uncomfortable, and unnecessarily so. I'd recommend that they look into some training resources, such as the free things you can find from ZingTrain. The interior decor is pretty sterile. Seeing the Christmas decoration bins sitting on the floor in the same spot day after day didn't give the impression that they cared much about how they present themselves. I guess if you pop in for a cone in the summer with a crowd, you wouldn't notice most of this. But on a quiet fall day, it all just screamed "Do Better". read more

Couldn't decide on flavours, so decided to each get a sampler boat of 5 scoops each, and between us, managed to eat them all. A really nice selection of fruity flavours, including several lovely sorbets, plus more sweet options including a fantastic salted caramel and butter pecan. Extremely friendly service, nice area to sit down and enjoy the ice cream. Just wished we could have gone several times on the trip. I include this on my list of top ice cream worldwide, the other two are Berthillon in Paris and Paul A Young in London (and my guy includes Humphry Slocombe in SF, although I'm less of a fan), which was pretty surprising to find in Northern Michigan. read more

The Hill Top is hard to find; it's on the side street adjoining the one supermarket in town, in a strip mall that also includes a florist shop. It's well worth making the effort to find. read more

Long story short: this is by far the best ice cream - bar none - that I have ever had. Hey and I'm 72 years old! I first sampled their choc/choc chip. it was so unbelievably good - so smooth and rich - I kept on coming back night after night and ordering the same flavor. But my son and his wife (and mine too) had other flavors and said they were delicious. I suspect for the owners: Ice cream as a labor of love, no doubt.
