We didn't stay during peak season but they have a bar on the water which would be cool. My room I stayed in was clean. Cons: The rooms are pretty dated. The bed was uncomfortable. The conference space had water damage with the rugs popping up because of this. Room was super hot but this happens in conference rooms. Food was okay. We Enjoyed our Stay at this Hotel. From the time we checked in to when we checked out the Staff was friendly, approachable, accommodating and friendly and respectful! Our room was always clean with towels our bed made changed appropriately when needed. It has also a Hot Tub Indoor Pool and Outdoor Pool also The Lake and a Beach Bar with great service from each Staff there! The only complaint and we were Not alone with this complaint was about the TV in our room! Awful Awful!! My kids and I stayed in west building the second week of October. The beach was beautiful and our reason for staying. Added an extra star just for the beauty of it. Sadly the tv is unable to connect to wifi so the kiddos could not watch their shows on Netflix. The night got chilly, so the heat was kicking on and off throughout which was noisy and had some burning odor. The lights outside the room are very bright, Not the best for sleeping. Since there is no restaurant or breakfast served on weekdays, we went elsewhere for that. read more

My wife and I just spent an enjoyable vacation at the Margate. We had a very spacious and comfortable room. The Margate has a large, private beach along with nice outdoor and indoor pools. The $14 unlimited breakfast buffet was a bargain. They provide ample free parking. I would have rated it 5 stars if it were not for one annoying incident. After spending the afternoon at the beach, we decided to grab a bite to eat at the beach bar. I was shocked to discover that they no longer list their offerings on a menu. You have to scan a QR code with your phone. Perhaps some phones are waterproof, but mine is not, and I don't bring it with me when I go swimming. I am still trying to figure out why a first-rate resort would try to pinch pennies by not printing their menu. read more

We recently stayed at The Margate Resort in Laconia, NH for our first family getaway since welcoming our five-month-old baby, along with our 10,11, & 6-year-old children. The property itself is undeniably beautiful--nestled right on the lakefront, it offers stunning views and convenient access to the water, which our kids absolutely loved. However, while the setting exceeded expectations, several aspects of our stay left us disappointed--particularly in terms of hospitality and guest accommodation. We had originally booked a double bed room on the ground floor and paid an additional $75 for early check-in, which we were happy to do given our travel schedule. The trouble began when we decided to extend our stay by an extra night. Despite having just checked out and expressing our desire to continue our stay, we were told we'd need to switch to a king bed room and pay an additional $15 each for two cots. This was not ideal, especially with a baby and two young children in tow. What was most frustrating was that, even though we were already guests and had spent significantly on food and drinks at the resort, we were not given any priority for re-check-in. We were made to wait until 4 PM to access the new room--leaving us outside in the heat with our children, including an infant, for several hours. This lack of flexibility and consideration was disheartening. The most disappointing part of our stay, however, was the dinner on our final night. We had hoped for a nice adult meal to close out our trip, but what we received was far from acceptable. We paid $30 per plate for steak tips that were overcooked, tough, and served in a portion size more fitting for a child's meal. I even took a photo comparing the plate to a container of Easy Mac--it was that underwhelming. The rice was mushy, and tasteless. As someone who works in the hospitality industry, I found this particularly unacceptable. It was enough to make us skip breakfast the next morning altogether. I truly wanted to love this resort and recommend it to friends and family--especially since many of them frequent the area during peak times like Bike Week. But based on our experience, I'm hesitant. The property itself is lovely, but the guest prioritization need serious attention. When families are traveling with young children, especially infants, a little flexibility and empathy can go a long way. I hope this feedback is taken to heart, because with a few improvements, The Margate could truly be a standout destination. Unfortunately, this was a letdown for our first experience at the Margate. Recently visited for an event. Did not stay at the hotel but we did experience the dining area, pool, sauna, tiki bar, and bar. The atmosphere of the dining and bar is very similar to an elks lodge. The pool is indoors and chlorine. It's a huge space which is nice. Tiki bar is a lovely time - right on the water! It's beautiful. Note that the place only operates with CASH, except for the tiki bar outside. There is an ATM in the lobby. As I didn't stay here, I cannot rate the hotel stay/experience. read more

BAD! I spent $1000 for two (2)n nights, because I had to go to a wedding and this venue was recommended! I rate this as a bad Motel 6, without the free breakfast! Most places where you spend this kind of money offer real coffee, brewed, in your room, don't have in window type air conditioners in the wall that blast you in the face all night, have water to drink from tap that tastes like a fish tank that hasn't been cleaned and 13 year old kids working the front desk. The only saving grace was the Serbian kid who was working the beach bar. I say Serbian only because he knew more about how service should be done in the US, than the folks from here. Don't get me started on the service and food at the wedding. Yes, some of the wait staff was good but when the catering staff are caught stealing the left over dessert, even before the event was over...come on! I've had better experiences at McDondalds. Since I have to give at least one star, I'll give them that for a beautiful location. We were here for a wedding which, other than nearly getting blown away during the reception and setup prior (no ability to add a wall to the tent), was absolutely lovely. Other than that, this was the worst hotel experience I've had ever. As previous reviewers have mentioned, the hotel is run down and the rooms are barely at Best Western level. In fact the comparison does a disservice to Best Western. The grout was cracking, the carpet worn, the towels flimsy and tiny, and no housekeeping, or even an offer to refresh towels, during a four night stay. The staff were unhelpful at best and rude at worst, with the event planner and Beach Bar staff being particularly bad in both areas. For nearly $400 a night (weekend rate), I expect better. The resort is on beautiful Lake Winnapasaukee in Laconia, New Hampshire. Great location and near commercial area - Supermarket and restaurants nearby. Resort is clean and overall decent. The indoor pool and hot tub is nice. They have a restaurant on site that serves breakfast. There is a lakeside bar and grill that is very nice. There is complimentary coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. There is a microwave available in the common area. We certainly do not have the same expectations as a national resort system like a Marriott, but thought that for the price, the resort would be more updated. The staff is wonderful-they work hard at keeping the place clean. read more

Dated, grungy, sometimes barely functional: The shower knob in our bathroom stuck so that only scorching hot water came out The door of our room was warped so that we had to hip check it violently to get it to open or close Carpets were filthy Furnishings were dated and dowdy I was charged $300 per night with a two night minimum because we were there for a wedding. Over $700 for a dump. I've stayed in Motel 6 with better amenities and condition. Our friends stayed at a small hotel about five minutes away that was a fraction of the cost and twice as nice. Hotel staff was attentive. Room was clean & as promised. We spent time on the beach. Swam to the floating dock about 200 feet from the shoreline. There was a boat tie-up adjacent to the cemetery. One boat played loud, horrible 1990's dance music (alot of Vanilla Ice & House of Pain). We moved to the hotel tiki bar. Service was bad here. Bartenders standing around staring at our empty cups when they weren't checking their phones for assumingly meaningless instagram updates. If we were rating the beach bar, I'd give it a 2. We decided on a suite that had adjoining rooms and of course, only one bathroom to share which you had to walk thru the other room to use. Terrible!! Lastly, the price we paid was $324 in F'ing Laconia, New Hampshire, in a ghetto building and tons of Harley Davidsons screaming up and down our street. WTF!!!! The condition of the rooms and hotel itself is disgusting. We've never stayed at a hotel that is falling apart like this. Furniture is extremely worn down. Our toilet seat didn't even have enamel left on it. This room was advertised on the website as 'newly renovated.' Our room was dusty and unclean with other people's hair all over. The building is old and creaky and we could hear very loud plumbing noises all night. Kelsey, the manager, told my wife that the room conditions and noise weren't acceptable when shown photos and that we would receive some compensation when she spoke to her in person but as soon as we were gone, Kelsey said via email that we would receive no rate adjustment. We paid $430 for two nights and I would say this room is not worth even $90 a night. We were hoping to work with management to find a solution and make them aware of the room's issues so that other people didn't deal with the same problems, but they weren't not interested in that. Having stayed here I was very happy with accommodations and venue. That being said, I am very disappointed in this establishment's cancelation policy. Made reservations months ago and due to the recent Corona Virus Pandemic, our conference was cancelled due to safety concerns....I promptly canceled reservation almost a month ahead of the canceled functions date and was informed of a $25.00 cancelation fee. REALLY? A number of fine establishments that I had to cancel for other events all refunded 100% of deposits. One even with less than 24 hour notice. It saddens me that The Margate chooses to make money off this global pandemic. Shame on you. My suggestion is offer a One Time waiver of this small $25.00 fee during this crisis. If I could give less than a 1 star I ould. read more

Lake Front is beautiful. Rooms are small, dated, and not cleaned real well. We had to move from the first room to another as it was dirty. Beds/mattress are not great and make a lot of noise when you move. This place is way overpriced. Breakfast buffet was sub standard and way overpriced for what you received. I stayed here this past week for the first time with my family. We decided to try the Margate after the motel that we've been staying at in Gilford for many years went way down hill. We are so happy we did! We loved the outdoor and indoor pools and the lake was great with the tiki bar. It was great to be able to rent paddle boards and kayaks right on the beach. They also had a movie night with popcorn for the kids and one night they had s'mores- an added bonus! The grounds were very clean and well cared for. Our room was spacious and clean and the air conditioner was ice cold. The housekeepers did an awesome job on our room everyday and all of the hotel staff were so nice. We are looking forward to booking our trip to the Margate next summer. read more

Let's be honest. You're not coming here for the food... It's a fun spot to pull up to with your boat, dock, grab a few drinks, maybe throw the kids in the lake for a swim and then head back out to your boat. The drinks are strong, the staff is friendly, and the views are great. Not as good of people watching as the Nazwa, just down the bay, but it's up there. We like that it's not as crowded. Just make sure you get there early, if coming for lunch, as the dock spots are usually full by 1130/12 noon. read more

The day before our reservation I ended up with covid and had to cancel. I called the hotel and I informed them of my situation. They were very unacomodating and dismissive. Their attitude was "our policy is cancelation 7 days ahead of time or you forfeit your deposit, too bad." The only thing they offered was rescheduling by the end of this year (immediately) or I would loose the deposit. Because my husband and I are unable to schedule any more days off for this year we are going to be loosing our deposit. We were willing to schedule any date for next year but they were unwilling. Anyone who books with this location should be aware that their cancelation policy is much more rigid and unacomodating than other lodging in the area regardless of reasoning, so Buyer Beware!!! read more

I was a little disappointed in the Margate, I won't lie. The week prior to our stay, my friend who plans out our vacations asked an employee via phone if they have two person canoes and the person replied that they had two of them. She was very excited, but when we got there, they did NOT have them out, they were "unusable". I would say that the food was good and came in big portions. But I would NOT suggest the pool. My family went to the pool a couple nights ago and we were all very dissatisfied. The pool itself was not the problem. 3 dozen+ children (around the ages of 10-14) running around the pool and jumping in, making a humongous amount of noise, we told someone up front but they did nothing. They were completely ok with the fact these children were running around, driving customers away, and throwing balls that were hitting people and windows. Another thing that was semi annoying was the rules about the paddle board. Before renting out one of there paddle boards, it is not worth your money. It is 12 dollars per hour (which is ok), but you must stay in a certain area and children under 14 cannot go out without an adult. This area that they have put out is extremely small for paddlboarding and very shallow(I'm 5'2' and I could stand flatfoot) WiFi was horrible so if you don't have data it will not help at all. The balcody on the beach level floor was annoying. There wasn't really a balcony, just a small (like, less than a foot of space) space and a bush placed right in front. I stayed here for four nights during a Harry Potter convention last week and loved it. The location made this convention so different from any I have ever attended before. The lake is beautiful and scenic and perfect for taking pictures by. And the beach bar is the perfect place to enjoy the view from. The unique layout of the resort, with its underground level connecting two buildings, was initially a bit confusing to figure out but turned out to be super convenient, especially when it started raining. The Blackstone Lounge was an excellent venue for everything from performances to trivia to dance parties. The hotel staff was so amazing for accommodating this crazy convention with such enthusiasm. Though MISTIcon won't be held here next time, I do hope that I'll have an excuse to come back! read more

Very disappointed with the rooms across the street from the main motel. The rooms are nice and large and updated and have a decent size refrigerator. I like that the sink is outside in a different area from the shower and toilet area. Rooms were clean. What is super upsetting is we have stayed before and got the same response about the cable and Internet access. That is the cable company needs to correct the problem. Well 3 times in past 4 years you would think it would be fixed or we would have learned our lesson. The internet connectivity was atrocious and would go on and off multiple times every few minutes. The TV had a lot of channels but all we could get was about 10 and even those came and went in the middle of a show. We called the front desk and they sent maintenance right over but as they told us they don't fix the cable or internet. They tried to check the router in the basement (the basement????) and could not find anything wrong. Even the channels that did not go off had about every 5 or 6 words cut out so you could not enjoy the show. I was trying to do some work on my computer and it was unbelievably frustrating. Don't advertise amenities if you cannot deliver. Positive is the continental breakfast which is fresh daily and they have a nice selection although does not make up for the horrible cable and Internet. read more

Convenient for the kids with the lake literally right outside our door, and a beach bar complete with food and drinks. The outdoor pool across the street is a nice change of scenery. Loved the under-ground tunnel for exploring and getting to breakfast every morning! One suggestion I would make is to not let people "reserve" lounge chairs. Guests are outside putting towels on chairs at 7am and then not using them until 10 and there aren't enough chairs to go around. Highly annoying to see 5 empty chairs with towels on them for hours when we're sitting all morning in our small beach chairs. Maybe have "no reserving lounge chairs" signs? read more

I was scheduled to stay here for a wedding from July 10-12, 2020. Due to the coronavirus, the wedding was canceled. I called to cancel my reservation and was told there would be a $25 fee. I asked, "even with the circumstances?" She said, "what, the wedding being canceled?" I said, "with the whole coronavirus situation" and she replied that the "travel bans are scheduled to be lifted before my dates of stay." I explained that the wedding was being rescheduled to next year but I would not be staying at the Margate. She said she was sorry I felt that way. They would rather have $25 today than $600 next year. Let that sink in. Airbnb provided a full refund during this time. Shame on this place. read more

I have never stayed at the Inn as I can read and understand that across the street...means across the street. We had the most wonderful week at the Margate Resort! We have a 13 year old daughter that is a wheelchair user and were happy that the indoor and outdoor pool had a w/c lift. The staff were really warm and accommodating. We had an amazing time swimming and kayaking in the lake. It was great that they had family friend events every night....including s'mores by the fire pit and outdoor movie night! We will definitely be back next year! read more

wanted to share some feedback from our stay 7/27 - 7/30 in Room 419. The good: we loved the location, convenience to the beach, and the hospitality we received from the staff at the tiki bar. The bad: we were very disappointed in the condition of the room. Aside from being extremely dated, we experienced the following problems; - Upon arrival we were "sprayed" by irrigation being serviced near the beach. There was no awareness of customers in the area - Margate staff were present. - Large stain on carpet near sliding door - seams present in carpet - Television volume malfunction, and when running an appliance in the bathroom the television becomes distorted/snowy - Hot water knob fell off from bathroom sink fixture at first use - Bathroom sink cracked - Bathroom wallpaper peeling - Bathroom towel holder falling off wall wall - was previously repaired We were overall disappointed with the fact we spent nearly $1000 for three nights and were subjected to these conditions. The ugly: I was called today by the Operations Manager who offered $100 gift card as a form of service recovery. What an insult - I spent more than that nightly on food and beverage. read more

I'm really surprised by all of the negative reviews of the Margate. Like a few people have already said, it's not fancy and it hasn't been updated in a long time...if ever...but that is part of it's charm. Also, it's not super expensive. We stayed in the inn building for one night and the room was big and the bed was comfortable. Before we checked out we had breakfast and for only 6 bucks it was pretty delicious! They have a free continental option as well. Once we checked out, we were able to use the indoor pool and hot tub and the beach and lake for the day. The private beach is great, the water was warm and clean. The pool and the hot tub are huge! I loved the beach bar. They had live music when we were there and the food was delicious. I will definitely be back again soon! I probably wouldn't stay at the Margate for a whole week but it's perfect for a weekend! read more

Stayed here with 4 friends over a long weekend so the minimum night's stay was two. We attended a concert at the Bank of NH Pavillion so this venue was convenient for us. We had two adjoining rooms across the street from the main hotel on the first floor. The rooms were outdated (70's) but very clean. Three of us shared one room with two double beds and a cot. The other two were in the adjoining room with two double beds. We liked that the beds did not have bedspreads, instead a little piece that draped across the foot that could be removed easily. Our beds (and cot) were very comfortable. The rooms have their own A/C's and ours worked perfectly. The rooms quickly cooled and heated (when needed) and each room was equipped with a small refrigerator and a Keurig with complimentary pods. Pros: - very clean rooms - nice, sizeable beach with ample and comfortable beach chaises - bar at the beach (though we did not visit it) - complimentary in-room beach towels - nice, clean outdoor pool (they have an indoor pool and jacuzzi but we did not use it) - complimentary continental breakfast (additional $7 or so for hot breakfast) - friendly staff (at least the ones we encountered) - convenient location (next door to a supermarket, TJMAXX) - complimentary in room WIFI Cons: - outdated rooms - a little noisy if you're on the 1st floor (can hear neighbors upstairs) - we were across the street from the main hotel/beach - musty smell throughout the hotel due mostly to stale air. Seemed as if A/C wasn't on in most hallways - small exercise room with outdated equipment - sign at the beach stated that outside food and beverages/coolers were not allowed on the beach during bar hours Overall, it was a comfortable stay and we would all return but would have preferred a room on the beach side of the road. read more

I had booked a room a month in advance,traveling from NYC to Irish fest in Gilford, NH after driving 5 hours we went straight to the irish fest, knowing we would be arriving at the hotel after eleven o'clock, so i called around eight to alert them of our late check in, they tell us we do not have our reservation and they are fully booked! i give them my confirmation number and date of booking and they found my reservation but did not book the room and blamed it on a computer glitch leaving us with no help what so ever! all area hotels where fully booked read more

The scenery definitely works for this place. Everything else looks like its 30 years out of its time. The internet connection is terrible, making the TV/internet go in & out. My biggest issue with this place is our group came in at 10am and we were ready for our rooms. This has been routine for us so we know a wait is inevitable. Unfortunately they are heavily understaffed and were not able to get us in rooms until 4pm. Once we got situated, I decided to give late check out a chance for the next day. The Gentleman on the phone was rude and said "SIR YOU'RE GONNA HAVE TO CALL IN THE MORNING AFTER 8AM." No late checkout, had to be out by 11am. The internet service/wifi here is useless unless if you consider 7x the speed of dialup to be acceptable. I checked using a speed test and it looks like it's Metrocast 500Kbps. The scenery and facility is ok, just don't expect to get anything done related to business. Also, the toilet paper is like wiping with a cereal box. The room sizes are good but there was a distinct odor of a dead animal stuck in the wall. They did not cooperate in getting our family a new room but they did offer a free $6.95 breakfast. Incredible. The beach bar has nice scenery but the bartender working one day wearing the "Everything Sucks" baseball cap was extremely rude and condescending. This place needs new people that give a crap about their guests. read more
