Only thing worth it about marine room is the view. It's a beautiful restaurant with an amazing water front view. Waves crashing against the windows - it's incredible. Outside of that, it's an underwhelming restaurant. Food was average at best. It's a full bar, but you'll be waiting 30 minutes to get a drink after you order. I think it's a instagram / TikTok trap. Don't fall for it - there are more affordable restaurants with just as great views in La Jolla. I am giving it 3 stars, because I'm not mad, just disappointed. read more

We celebrated our anniversary at The Marine Room and had such a wonderful experience! We brought our twin three-year-olds and were seated in a comfortable booth with an incredible view of the sunset. It was the perfect setting for a special dinner. We started with the Peruvian Crudo, which was absolutely delicious, and I had the Pistachio Crusted Seabass for my entrée. Everything was beautifully prepared and made the evening feel even more special. The service was outstanding from start to finish. Everyone was incredibly attentive, from keeping our waters filled and getting us additional beverages to being so sweet with our boys and giving them high fives throughout dinner. Our boys were happy and content during the entire meal, and we really appreciated how welcoming everyone was to our family. The little anniversary touches were wonderful too. We loved the celebration toast and the special anniversary dessert they brought us. Between the gorgeous sunset, amazing food, outstanding service, and thoughtful touches, it was such a memorable anniversary dinner. Wonderful experience here. The restaurant is located shoreside. During high tide, the waves literally crash at the bottom of the windows. Such a stunning restaurant overlooking the shore front. We booked a reservation months in advance to ensure we could watch the sunset and waves on the last day of our trip. Upon arriving on time, we had a short wait before being called downstairs, to which we waited at the base of stairs before being escorted to a table in the lounge. A little confusing but our seating was clearly popular as we had several people taking selfies with the sunset behind them. The lounge has a limited menu so we dined on two appetizers and martinis. The martinis took a bit longer to come out, arriving after our appetizers. However both the food and drinks were on point. On 8/11/2026, My friend and I celebrated our birthdays here and our reservation was for 4:30 PM. They are prompt with opening the door at 4:30 PM even though we arrived a little bit earlier. We were greeted by an employee who offered us water while we waited until 430 and we gladly accepted. There's a bench if you arrive early- enough for 2 to 3 people to sit there and then everyone else waited until the door is open. Upon walking in the smell in this establishment was so fresh. It's smelled like sea salt and something else that I can't recall. But that smell was wonderful throughout the entire duration of my visit. Initially, my friend and I were seated at a table that was pushed against a portion of the windows to the far right of the bar. Other people were being seated at other places, and we asked to be moved because that table was very small and the arrangement was just not what we thought it would be like. They kindly accepted and we moved towards the lounge area/dining room in which we had a table with ample space and we could see the perfect views of the ocean. Initially, I did not expect for all of the people to be down on the sand while we're in the restaurant, but if you go, you will see all walks of life in their bathing suits and putting stuff on the retaining wall. Until it gets about 6 PM and the tides are higher, and the people have since left. Then the views become absolutely amazing. Our waiter was Javier. He was super amazing, intend to, checked out often and gave great recommendations for the menu. For the appetizer, he recommended the crab and then for dinner the filet mignon and I chose the chocolate cake that had pistachios. Everything was delicious, including their house made bread and they had butter with black sea salt. I ate so much bread, but I couldn't resist while I was waiting for the rest of my meal. The mashed potatoes were excellent with the broccolini and the filet mignon was cooked to perfection. My complaints to the chefs. There is even a gentleman with his band, singing and engaging with the audience. Overall, it was a really good experience once the tides got higher and most of the gas exited the area. The Marine Room is located in La Jolla proper along Spindrift road--it was once The Spindrift Inn in 1916 transformed in 1941 to what we know now. There is a small parking lot for valet and some street parking. Reservations were made for early evening, so just before sunset, and what a way to end the day. Here is the run down: You walk in, check in reception, and take in the view. I ordered the King Oyster Mushroom and the Almond Fizz from their curated sips mocktail menu. As I glanced out of the massive ocean facing window, I had one the best front row views of the blue pacific and I was just in awe. The tide was not high during my visit, but I was still impressed. The king mushroom was cooked to perfection and zero proof cocktail tasted like a vacation. The washrooms were clean and tidy. Service was great! Next time I have my eyes on the other mocktails! We tried several dishes, including oysters and scallops, and unfortunately the food overall was pretty underwhelming and lacked flavor. Nothing was necessarily bad, but nothing really stood out either. Also, if you see the restaurant from the beach, the exterior itself is surprisingly understated and doesn't really give the impression of a luxury dining destination. We were excited to try this restaurant after seeing it featured on social media. What we saw online made it look like a unique, elevated experience, so unfortunately our first impression upon arrival did not match those expectations. When we pulled into the parking lot, there was already a large crowd waiting outside on the steps. The valet informed us that the lot was completely full and that we would need to find parking elsewhere. This was a little frustrating, particularly because we could see several open spaces, while a couple of vehicles were parked across multiple spots. Getting into the restaurant also required working through the crowd gathered near the entrance, and once inside it became clear why so many people were waiting outside, the lobby was completely full, including all available seating. The other thing that stood out immediately was how warm and humid it felt inside. Obviously, a crowded space will naturally become warmer, but it felt noticeably muggy and uncomfortable, even compared with the temperature outside. The hostess appeared to be doing her best under difficult circumstances, but she was visibly overwhelmed. She was communicating with staff through her headset while also answering questions from several guests about reservations and wait times. Multiple parties were being told that seating was running behind because previous guests were still dining. We had a reservation and had intentionally arrived early, but the overall experience already felt quite disorganized. I asked whether there was a bar where we could wait and was told that it was also completely full. With no comfortable place to wait inside, we ultimately went back outside. At that point, we decided to dine somewhere else. For a restaurant that appears to market itself as an experience worth dressing up for and making a reservation to enjoy, the arrival and waiting experience simply did not meet our expectations. First off, this restaurant has one of the amazing location and views, right near the ocean waves. This alone makes it a spot to check out, but more on this later ;). The restaurant has a little higher end feeling to it so dressing nice is recommended. You enter at the top of the restaurant and move downstairs to the dining area being at beach level. The ideal tables are closest to the windows where you can have the view outwards. The food here was American style, with the veggie sides being delicious. The Australian wagyu was cooked beautifully and delicious, coming with same veggie and potatoes side. Also had the truffle risotto that was made yummyly!! Overall the food was good! The service here was great from start to finish. They really made us feel like special guest and that goes along way for the vibes. My husband and I shared the Tomahawk Ribeye and it was good. It usually comes with one side and we got another side. We had the mushrooms which I would not recommend and the potato purée which I do recommend. I am not a big fan of mushrooms But my husband likes them and he didn't enjoy them. The potato purée or basically mashed potato was seasoned well. The steak was prepared really well. Waiter also looked great in suit--almost like he had stepped straight out of a movie. The view is absolutely gorgeous. They even have a mirror positioned to reflect the ocean view for guests sitting with their backs to it, which is a thoughtful touch. 2-3 stars for the food. Before coming, we did some research and saw that the food wasn't supposed to be particularly spectacular. After trying it ourselves, I'd say that was pretty accurate--the food was quite mediocre overall. The one dish I would recommend is the crudo. The presentation was clearly done with a lot of care, but the food is very expensive, and I'd say you're paying quite a bit for the view. Also they charge fee for water. They do have a dress code, but I appreciated that they weren't overly strict about it. The hostess table had two ladies who weren't very nice. You have to pay $15 for valet parking. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful and obviously it's an amazing experience. The prices are very high but expected due to location. Service was excellent, very professional and more old school. We definitely were happy with a service. We had summer salad that was excellent. And we also ordered squid. Squid was very disappointing because it was extremely salty, it was hard to eat and I love salty food. My husband couldn't eat much of it because he doesn't like salty food much. We also had mocktails that were pretty good. I had king trumpet mushroom for my main and a side of cauliflower. Mushroom dish was amazing but cauliflower wasn't very good, especially the sauce was very heavy and didn't seem like it was a good sauce for cauliflower. My husband had swordfish and it was excellent. However it comes with zucchini squash that wasn't very good and again the sauce wasn't very good. The Marine Room is undeniably beautiful inside, and the oceanfront setting is breathtaking. It's truly a million-dollar view overlooking the ocean, which is exactly why we chose it for dinner on our day trip to SD. Unfortunately, our experience left us deeply disappointed. My mom and I were seated all the way in the second dining room, up the set of stairs, all the way in the back corner--far from the scenic ocean view and the main dining room--next to an area where extra chairs would be stored to be hidden from view. Watching other guests, mainly Caucasians, enjoy the beautiful views while we were tucked away made us feel unwelcome. We asked to speak with the manager, Mr. Bates. While he was professional, he was unwilling to accommodate our request even after we explained that we would be happy to wait for a window table. This dinner was meant to be a special treat for my mom, and it would have been our first time dining here. Instead of feeling welcomed, we left feeling that we were treated differently. I can't say for certain why we were seated where we were, but the experience left us feeling as though race and ethnicity may have played a role. Because of how disrespected we felt, we asked that our reservation be canceled. Judging from the non-stellar Yelp reviews about the subpar food with the outrageous price, why would anyone settle for a peasant table to be discriminated against? We snagged early reservations at 4:30pm Sunday which was right when they opened. That's the best way to secure a table next to the window. You're literally on the beach Tip: our server suggested with high tide being June, July and August times that they suggest to pre-book in advance since that's a popular time to experience the restaurant with the high tide coming up to the glass windows. After reading other reviews, I was worried about a possible fish smell but we didn't experience that at all so I wonder if it was just something in the air since that can happen in San Diego. No fish market smell PARKING we got super lucky with street parking but noticed they have a $15 valet parking out front that opens when the restaurant does FOOD -The focaccia table bread with the butter & volcanic salt is SO good! We got a few rounds of that. -We shared the Endive salad which had perfectly picked vegetables. The salad was a little tricky to eat but was still delicious -I had the truffle risotto -my husband had the roasted chicken -we shared a few sides: truffle root fries, carrots and mushrooms. I ordered the tuna tataki - 8.5/10 for me (could have added more tuna for a better value - the tuna slices were small) but flavor and texture was excellent. My friend ordered the scallops - she liked it 9/10. Another friend ordered the trout with charred brassica, coconut salsa macha, red chile maitake, cassis chayote - it was good except the coconut salsa macha made the trout taste fishy. If you order this - order the coconut salsa macha on the side. Another friend ordered the Blackened swordfish with crawfish etouffee, forbidden rice. She is from the south (Houston, TX) and said the etouffee wasn't great but for California standards - it is what it is. One of my friend's ordered the Thai curry soup for a starter by the way but said it was too salty. For the sides we ordered the Brussels sprouts and mushrooms 10/10 I would come back JUST for that!!!!!!!!! Ohhhh but the focaccia bread, although it wasn't gluten free - I still ate it and it was amazing!!! Hunter also assisted us, I think he was the server assistant? experience is unbeatable but food was a bit underwhelming. you're 100% paying for the ambiance but genuinely where else are you gonna find a restaurant on the beach with waves crashing on the windows they have complimentary focaccia bread but i swear the one i make at home tastes better :( it was too dry on the outside they tried to make the caesar salad special by adding some lemon pieces but it threw the taste off in my opinion. their lettuce was rly fresh tho the butter poached lobster was pretty good but honestly it was a little too buttery and more dense than i would've liked. also the corn it came with was so sour and i didn't enjoy it the filet mignon was a little too charred/rough/dry on the outside but the inside and the mashed potatoes were really really good. the truffle fries were prob my least favorite thing we got. they were sooo overcooked and stiff :/ they gave me complimentary raspberry cake bc i was celebrating my graduation and it was pretty good. cake was very moist and i liked how it was sweet and tart at the same time. the honey panna cotta had hints of lemon which i enjoyed but probably wouldn't get again for the price :/ a bit too heavy overall i did have higher expectations for the food itself but at least the portions were decently sized...still very pricey though read more

I highly recommend dining in the lounge area at the Marine Room restaurant in La Jolla. This is a special occasion restaurant and I saw many people celebrating birthdays. The main dining room can be a bit pricey and sometimes the portions are small. The lounge area has a late night menu that starts around 8 PM till closing, and you can also eat anything off of the main menu from the dining room. I thoroughly enjoyed the lobster roll and the dip that comes with it is heavenly creamy and a perfect combination to dip your lobster roll in. Think a French dip sandwich except make it seafood. It was the best lobster roll I've ever had and almost tasted like a crab sandwich with butter from heaven! The Chardonnay that comes from the tasting menu off of the evening menu was so crisp and delicious. I highly recommend it! It's not a full glass of wine but more than a tasting, but it worked out great for us because we were just eating small bites after having a very large lunch. My favorite thing that I ate, however, has to be their mud pie that I had for dessert. It was supremely delicious. However, I hate to admit that if you have a strong sense of smell then it might be challenging for you because this restaurant smells like a fish market. It was hard to get used to at first, but then when my wine arrived and after two or three sips, for some reason, the smell didn't bother me as much. I know that the menu is mostly seafood so it makes sense but I've never smelled a seafood restaurant that smells like this. Someone in our party doesn't eat fish and seafood so they had a really hard time adjusting to the smell. But if you like fish and love, beautiful ocean views then I highly recommend this elegant restaurant. Another cool thing about this restaurant was learning about its history in the lobby through its many newspaper clippings, and historical recollections. The Marine Room was originally built in 1916 as the Spindrift Inn, before being transformed into the iconic restaurant that opened on May 29th, 1941. The Kellogg family, specifically Frederick W. The views and food were good - the service? Not so much. We made the drive from OC to San Diego to celebrate my husbands 50th birthday yesterday and brought our 11 year old twins with us. We normally wouldn't bring the twins to a fancy dinner, however, when I made the reservation over the phone (a month ago), the lady told me that while adults were $165/pp, the kids were only $75. When we arrived at the restaurant, I asked the hostess at the front for a kids menu, since I assumed there'd be a separate menu since its cheaper. The hostess said they didn't have a kids menu and that the prix fixe menu was all they had. Welp, okay then. For dinner, the kids ordered from the prix fixe menu. You can guess what happened. We were charged the full, adult price for the kids. When I told our waiter what the reservations person told me, all he said was, "Oh then they shouldn't have ordered from the prix fixe menu and just gotten butter noodles or something"! I told him we didnt know that was an option as the twins would've preferred butter noodles AND the lady at the front said there was no kids menu. He just said "sorry for the miscommunication" and walked off! This was a huge miss on their part. Had the absolute pleasure of dining here as part of our anniversary celebrations with my husband and it was wonderful! We were not there during high tide so we did not get the drama of the waves crashing against the windows but since we had our little one with us I think that was actually better. The focaccia and butter starters were a great way to start our meal We ordered the trout tartare and the Peruvian crudo and they were delicious! The tartare was slightly more lemon forward with a stronger fish taste while the crudo is sweeter and just melts in your mouth. I still think about it months later. The textures were all perfect and the flavors were all well balanced. The filet mignon was tender and flavorful though the peppercorn sauce was sweeter than I like. The cauliflower purée was wonderful and I liked that there was a roasted cauliflower on top as well. The bone marrow was also a generous portion. The Brussels sprouts were the unexpected stars of the meal for me. They were so soft and caramelized. I could have had 3 more servings they were delicious! If you like Brussels sprouts I highly recommend you try these. Phenomenal experience I saw this place with all of the hype on Instagram and TikTok, but I am so happy to say that it was worth every dollar and every minute. This is the definition of a hidden gem even the locals do not know where this is because it's hidden in a residential area. Everything from the service at check-in to the food quality and especially the views (we sat right by the window) were amazing. I ordered the scallops and the other dish was the trout which was recommended by the waitress . Another recommendation by the waitress was the starter fresh albacore tuna absolutely amazing. This was the best sashimi. We could've had word of advice when you come here definitely take the advice of the waitress or waiter. They know what's best. The Thai curry crab soup wasn't our favorite but the waiter quickly replaced it with the lobster bisque which was much more our taste. Not happy. I called The Marine Room a couple days ago for a reservation two weeks out. I was told I had a reservation but to wait for confirmation from the manager. I thought it was a done deal. I notified all my guests (12) and then yesterday someone called and said " unfortunately we are not going to be able to accommodate you". What in the actual F? Come on, guys. Get your act together. I came here with my girlfriend to celebrate a special night, and from the moment we pulled up to the valet, everything about this place screamed timeless. Instead of an ultra-modern design, we were met with a quaint porch lit up by a stylish neon sign. Looking at the place from outside, you'd have no clue what you were about to witness on stepping inside. This kind of spot that doesn't just rely on its reputation or its oceanfront view to impress, but rather takes your taste buds on a culinary journey, earning its acclaim every step of the way. We got lucky with our timing, arriving just as the sun began to set, lighting the sky up with beautiful shades of orange and purple. If you've never seen the tide rise while you're dining on a steak or a plate of oysters, you haven't truly experienced what coastal dining is supposed to feel like. Between the calming sound of the waves and the candlelight bouncing off the window, this place has the kind of atmosphere where we found our conversation slowing and quieting down... in awe of the setting we had found ourselves in. The service was top-notch from start to finish. Our server was friendly and patient, walking us through the menu like someone who actually eats here on their days off (always a good sign). We started with the Thai curry soup, Oysters, and the Peruvian Crudo, which were the perfect openers. We found ourselves savoring every bite, taking an hour to only finish our appetizers as we marveled at the ocean that sat feet across from us, behind the massive windows. For mains, we went with the A5 Wagyu Steak and the Swordfish Filet. Both came out plated like art, to where you just want to appreciate it, and both were cooked to perfection. The A5 wagyu melted in our mouths like butter, with just the right char on the outside and cooked to a perfect medium. Cutting through the Swordfish was effortless. Both cuts were juicy, with all the right textures inside and out. My girlfriend typically puts salt on everything she eats, but here, everything was salted and seasoned to perfection, and the salt cup remained untouched for the entire meal. This is really saying something. Yes, it's pricey... but you're not just paying for food here. You're paying for one of the most unique dining settings in San Diego, exceptional service, and a memory that'll probably stick with you for a long time. We never felt rushed to finish up, and understandably, we stayed for close to three hours. If you're visiting San Diego or are a local wanting a dinner that you'll never forget, The Marine Room delivers on every front. The service was excellent and the view was really nice but honestly that's all you're really paying for. The food was okay, not bad, but when you're paying $60 to $115 a plate, I would expect a higher quality. The focaccia we got for free and the $16 mushroom side were some of the better plates. read more

Overall, it was an amazing experience. Chris (Christopher) and all the other staff were incredibly kind, and it really felt like they made each guest feel special. The view was beautiful, and the restaurant itself felt very upscale. However, I ordered the lobster tail, and it seemed overcooked--it was rubbery and very difficult to cut. Even using my husband's steak knife, I had to practically tear it apart. It was also quite salty and tough, so I ended up leaving about half of it.
