Perfect for date nights The service was GREAT, couldn't say anything bad about any of the person that attended to us. But just like other comments here, the food is pretty basic. I hope they would have a more unique menu both pleasing to the eyes and filling. The taste was basic too, it's not really something I would crave for again that I have to get it in this specific restaurant. We had enjoyed the food then This time I came with my husband to celebrate our 3 years anniversary. Our server was Christopher and he was outstanding. This is a fine dining place and so dress properly. Reservation was for 5:30 but we're not seated till 10-15 mins later. We had the bread and it was good. My husband and I shared the Tomahawk Ribeye and it was good. It usually comes with one side and we got another side. We had the mushrooms which I would not recommend and the potato purée which I do recommend. I am not a big fan of mushrooms But my husband likes them and he didn't enjoy them. The potato purée or basically mashed potato was seasoned well. The steak was prepared really well. Chris brought something for dessert which was alright and we appreciate him for that The 4 stars is for the host and the price I would say. One of the classic places in San Diego! We've known about this place for years and it wasn't until this week that we finally made plans to check it out. We snagged early reservations at 4:30pm Sunday which was right when they opened. That's the best way to secure a table next to the window. You're literally on the beach Tip: our server suggested with high tide being June, July and August times that they suggest to pre-book in advance since that's a popular time to experience the restaurant with the high tide coming up to the glass windows. After reading other reviews, I was worried about a possible fish smell but we didn't experience that at all so I wonder if it was just something in the air since that can happen in San Diego. No fish market smell PARKING we got super lucky with street parking but noticed they have a $15 valet parking out front that opens when the restaurant does FOOD -The focaccia table bread with the butter & volcanic salt is SO good! We got a few rounds of that. -We shared the Endive salad which had perfectly picked vegetables. The salad was a little tricky to eat but was still delicious -I had the truffle risotto -my husband had the roasted chicken -we shared a few sides: truffle root fries, carrots and mushrooms. I highly recommend dining in the lounge area at the Marine Room restaurant in La Jolla. This is a special occasion restaurant and I saw many people celebrating birthdays. The main dining room can be a bit pricey and sometimes the portions are small. The lounge area has a late night menu that starts around 8 PM till closing, and you can also eat anything off of the main menu from the dining room. I thoroughly enjoyed the lobster roll and the dip that comes with it is heavenly creamy and a perfect combination to dip your lobster roll in. Think a French dip sandwich except make it seafood. It was the best lobster roll I've ever had and almost tasted like a crab sandwich with butter from heaven! The Chardonnay that comes from the tasting menu off of the evening menu was so crisp and delicious. I highly recommend it! It's not a full glass of wine but more than a tasting, but it worked out great for us because we were just eating small bites after having a very large lunch. My favorite thing that I ate, however, has to be their mud pie that I had for dessert. It was supremely delicious. However, I hate to admit that if you have a strong sense of smell then it might be challenging for you because this restaurant smells like a fish market. It was hard to get used to at first, but then when my wine arrived and after two or three sips, for some reason, the smell didn't bother me as much. I know that the menu is mostly seafood so it makes sense but I've never smelled a seafood restaurant that smells like this. Someone in our party doesn't eat fish and seafood so they had a really hard time adjusting to the smell. But if you like fish and love, beautiful ocean views then I highly recommend this elegant restaurant. Another cool thing about this restaurant was learning about its history in the lobby through its many newspaper clippings, and historical recollections. The Marine Room was originally built in 1916 as the Spindrift Inn, before being transformed into the iconic restaurant that opened on May 29th, 1941. The Kellogg family, specifically Frederick W. Had the absolute pleasure of dining here as part of our anniversary celebrations with my husband and it was wonderful! We were not there during high tide so we did not get the drama of the waves crashing against the windows but since we had our little one with us I think that was actually better. The focaccia and butter starters were a great way to start our meal We ordered the trout tartare and the Peruvian crudo and they were delicious! The tartare was slightly more lemon forward with a stronger fish taste while the crudo is sweeter and just melts in your mouth. I still think about it months later. The textures were all perfect and the flavors were all well balanced. The filet mignon was tender and flavorful though the peppercorn sauce was sweeter than I like. The cauliflower purée was wonderful and I liked that there was a roasted cauliflower on top as well. The bone marrow was also a generous portion. The Brussels sprouts were the unexpected stars of the meal for me. They were so soft and caramelized. I could have had 3 more servings they were delicious! If you like Brussels sprouts I highly recommend you try these. I ordered the tuna tataki - 8.5/10 for me (could have added more tuna for a better value - the tuna slices were small) but flavor and texture was excellent. My friend ordered the scallops - she liked it 9/10. Another friend ordered the trout with charred brassica, coconut salsa macha, red chile maitake, cassis chayote - it was good except the coconut salsa macha made the trout taste fishy. If you order this - order the coconut salsa macha on the side. Another friend ordered the Blackened swordfish with crawfish etouffee, forbidden rice. She is from the south (Houston, TX) and said the etouffee wasn't great but for California standards - it is what it is. One of my friend's ordered the Thai curry soup for a starter by the way but said it was too salty. For the sides we ordered the Brussels sprouts and mushrooms 10/10 I would come back JUST for that!!!!!!!!! Phenomenal experience I saw this place with all of the hype on Instagram and TikTok, but I am so happy to say that it was worth every dollar and every minute. This is the definition of a hidden gem even the locals do not know where this is because it's hidden in a residential area. Both cuts were juicy, with all the right textures inside and out. My girlfriend typically puts salt on everything she eats, but here, everything was salted and seasoned to perfection, and the salt cup remained untouched for the entire meal. This is really saying something. Yes, it's pricey... but you're not just paying for food here. You're paying for one of the most unique dining settings in San Diego, exceptional service, and a memory that'll probably stick with you for a long time. Based on some of the reviews, I went in expecting The Marine Room to be mostly about the view, with the food and service playing second fiddle. I'm happy to say that wasn't our experience at all. Yes, the ocean view off La Jolla Shores is spectacular, but the restaurant itself was excellent across the board. We found plenty of street parking nearby, which was a nice surprise. To start, we had the Peruvian Crudo, and it was outstanding -- fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. For our entrées, we ordered the scallops and the sea bass. Both were cooked perfectly. The restaurant also looked immaculate and very well maintained, which stood out to me in the best way. Service was incredibly attentive throughout the evening without feeling overbearing. The heirloom carrots were really good. First they seated us at the tiniest corner with the tiniest window and smallest table that barely fit our plates of food and drinks. When we arrived there were 3 potentially BETTER spots they could have seated us at, I mean it's only our 30th and we're only 48, high school sweethearts, no big deal right? I guess not. Thank you for the "labeled menu" for our anniversary and the champagne toast but listening to a conversation behind me of a "first date" or the 2 dudes just having a business dinner, I guess they should have better choices of seating right since it's such a special occasion for them, I was literally embarrassed where we were seated. Our food was ok, my husband had the Lobster and Filet, which my husband enjoyed and I ordered Beef cheek Ragu, which was on the heavy side, like needed something to make it not so gamey and meaty, but was ok, husband helped out. Unfortunately, it feels like when a restaurant leans heavily on the view, the food or drinks tend to fall short. First, for what you get, I think it's extremely overpriced. The drinks were great, but the food didn't live up to the same standard. I ordered the filet mignon, expecting something exceptional at that price point--but I was disappointed. It had no proper sear or crust and was oddly pale, almost like it had been pre-cooked and then quickly finished on the grill just to add marks. I ordered it medium rare, but the inside had an unusual texture and appearance--more like pink ground beef than a fresh-cut filet. It definitely didn't seem freshly prepared. I cook filet mignon regularly, and I've never seen it come out like that. I feel like you could have a better steak at Texas Roadhouse. People obviously choose The Marine Room for its stunning ocean views, and to be fair, the views are absolutely breathtaking. However, after our experience, I feel this restaurant is only truly worth it if you're seated right by one of the oceanfront windows. We were told window seating was first-come, first-served, but several parties who arrived after us were seated at the windows while we even arrived early for our reservation. Whether there were other factors involved or not, it definitely impacted our experience and left us feeling disappointed. Unfortunately, that wasn't the only issue. The bottle of wine we selected was unavailable, which was a letdown. Bread also wasn't brought to the table automatically, we had to ask for it multiple times throughout the meal. The service overall felt inattentive and below what I would expect at this price point. As for the food, it was fine. Nothing was bad, but nothing really stood out either. For the cost, it felt like a large portion of what you're paying for is the view. If you're lucky enough to get a window seat, that may be worth it. If not, I don't think the overall dining experience justifies the price. I had been waiting to visit The Marine Room ever since I moved from the Bay Area last year, and finally went for my birthday dinner. We had a 7:45pm reservation on a Friday, so it wasn't technically during their official "high tide" dinners, but the waves were still absolutely mesmerizing. They crashed dramatically against the windows, sometimes with such force it felt like the ocean was trying to join us at the table. It was both peaceful and thrilling at the same time. The ambiance is elegant and romantic, perfect for a special occasion. Every seat feels like it has a front-row view of nature's show. I couldn't stop looking out the window the entire meal. The food was just as impressive. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared and beautifully plated. You could taste the quality and care in every bite. The staff was kind and attentive, and even brought out a birthday treat that made the night feel extra special. It's definitely a splurge, but one that's completely worth it. Came here to celebrate a friend's birthday. The staff here at The Marine Room surely knew how to make us feel welcomed and special. The restaurant is gorgeous. Especially coming during sun set. The big windows showcased the nice sunset rays that made it such a romantic and warm setting. They have great food options along with nice cocktails. We got complimentary amuse bouche that was delicious. What stood out was their oysters, ahi tuna, lamb chops, yucca fries, and cheesecake. We came in a fairly large group and ordered many dishes. All, really delicious. They even did complimentary cake for my friend's birthday and it was heavenly as well. Overall, great place to come and enjoy great food with great company. read more

We came here the first time last night in the main dining room. The service was good. I love the ambiance, romantic specially from sunset to nightfall. The food was ok, I really think you're paying for the view not the taste of the food. They served us with complimentary focaccia & butter. I recommend the ribeye over the filet. For the sides, we liked the mushrooms better than the brussels sprouts. We received 2 cute little pieces of chocolate at the same time the check was presented which we truly appreciated. No appetizers or dessert because we didn't find anything we would like. Overall, I recommend dining here for the spectacular view of the beach. Make reservations ahead of time. As for parking, valet is available right in the front of restaurant. The bill was about $400 with tip for the 2 of us which included 1 dessert wine, 1 old fashioned, ribeye, filet with 2 sides. read more

We went to The Marine Room to celebrate my husband's doctor graduation, which was a special milestone for us. The views were absolutely amazing--though not quite like they used to be when the waves would come right up to the windows. It now appears the windows or dining area have been set back, and I'm not even sure that dramatic wave experience still happens anymore. They did create beautiful custom menus for our celebration, similar to what you'd see for birthdays or special occasions, which was a very nice and thoughtful touch. Unfortunately, that's where the positives mostly ended. When we ordered, we expected at least a reasonable amount of food. Instead, the portions were extremely small--almost nonexistent. For four people, our bill came to $413.76, and that didn't include the large tip we still gave. The service itself was good; our server was kind and helpful. However, the overall experience felt more like a high-pressure sales pitch--almost like buying a car--rather than a relaxed celebration dinner, which was not what we were looking for. I'm a Type 1 diabetic, and my blood sugar dropped during the meal, so I asked for an orange juice. I was shocked to be charged $8 for it. The prices overall are insane for what you actually receive. The food was not worth it--some of it tasted rubbery, and the portions were so small that we were still hungry and had to eat again afterward. This experience was not what we remembered from years ago and certainly not what we expected for such a meaningful celebration. Sadly, we won't be coming back. read more

Second time in this restaurant. We went again because we wanted to see how the restaurant looks like when it's high tide. Specifically asked the front desk for the date when it's a high tide. Unfortunately, we were told that it's only in the morning. Wish they told us that when we made the reservation. But other than that, service is always excellent. Food was great and the vibe is good. An absolutely amazing dining experience! Went at high tide (not King Tide) but still special having the waves come up to our window! It was our 21st wedding anniversary and they did everything to make it special. Special table right on the window with waves up to our window. Custom personalized menu and glass of champagne to toast. Stefano was so classy and treated us like royalty. No rush at all and excellent service all night. There were a few mistakes made like timing and steak a little undercooked but they were so apologetic and went way above and beyond service to correct and make things right (way more than necessary) The lobster bisque was probably best ever and our Poached Butter lobster and Waygu Ribeye were spectacular. Everything was fantastic and how they took care of us over very minor mistakes, was stellar! We will be back for other special occasions and highly recommend for special dining experience. read more
