The Marine Room is located in La Jolla proper along Spindrift road--it was once The Spindrift Inn in 1916 transformed in 1941 to what we know now. There is a small parking lot for valet and some street parking. Reservations were made for early evening, so just before sunset, and what a way to end the day. Here is the run down: You walk in, check in reception, and take in the view. I ordered the King Oyster Mushroom and the Almond Fizz from their curated sips mocktail menu. As I glanced out of the massive ocean facing window, I had one the best front row views of the blue pacific and I was just in awe. The tide was not high during my visit, but I was still impressed. The king mushroom was cooked to perfection and zero proof cocktail tasted like a vacation. The washrooms were clean and tidy. Service was great! Next time I have my eyes on the other mocktails! The views and food were good - the service? Not so much. We made the drive from OC to San Diego to celebrate my husbands 50th birthday yesterday and brought our 11 year old twins with us. We normally wouldn't bring the twins to a fancy dinner, however, when I made the reservation over the phone (a month ago), the lady told me that while adults were $165/pp, the kids were only $75. When we arrived at the restaurant, I asked the hostess at the front for a kids menu, since I assumed there'd be a separate menu since its cheaper. The hostess said they didn't have a kids menu and that the prix fixe menu was all they had. Welp, okay then. For dinner, the kids ordered from the prix fixe menu. You can guess what happened. We were charged the full, adult price for the kids. When I told our waiter what the reservations person told me, all he said was, "Oh then they shouldn't have ordered from the prix fixe menu and just gotten butter noodles or something"! I told him we didnt know that was an option as the twins would've preferred butter noodles AND the lady at the front said there was no kids menu. He just said "sorry for the miscommunication" and walked off! This was a huge miss on their part. We finally made it to The Marine Room for our anniversary, and it had been on our list for quite some time. We were so happy to finally experience it! The valet car service was a wonderful convenience, so we didn't have to worry about parking. The service was lovely from start to finish, and we had a fantastic ribeye steak that was cooked beautifully. To make the evening even more special, they surprised us with a lovely dessert to celebrate our anniversary. We also ordered the Spindrift Cappuccino Cobblestone Pie, and it was absolutely amazing! First off, this restaurant has one of the amazing location and views, right near the ocean waves. This alone makes it a spot to check out, but more on this later ;). The restaurant has a little higher end feeling to it so dressing nice is recommended. You enter at the top of the restaurant and move downstairs to the dining area being at beach level. The ideal tables are closest to the windows where you can have the view outwards. The food here was American style, with the veggie sides being delicious. The Australian wagyu was cooked beautifully and delicious, coming with same veggie and potatoes side. Also had the truffle risotto that was made yummyly!! Overall the food was good! The service here was great from start to finish. They really made us feel like special guest and that goes along way for the vibes. We truly appreciate our service we got here and a big reason why we would come back! We were visiting the area for a week and made a reservation in advance for a Thursday dinner. We came in a little earlier than our reservation but were seated past our reservation time and we didn't even get a nice view table, which we get that not everyone gets it. The hostess table had two ladies who weren't very nice. You have to pay $15 for valet parking. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful and obviously it's an amazing experience. The prices are very high but expected due to location. Service was excellent, very professional and more old school. We definitely were happy with a service. We had summer salad that was excellent. And we also ordered squid. Squid was very disappointing because it was extremely salty, it was hard to eat and I love salty food. My husband couldn't eat much of it because he doesn't like salty food much. We also had mocktails that were pretty good. I had king trumpet mushroom for my main and a side of cauliflower. Mushroom dish was amazing but cauliflower wasn't very good, especially the sauce was very heavy and didn't seem like it was a good sauce for cauliflower. My husband had swordfish and it was excellent. However it comes with zucchini squash that wasn't very good and again the sauce wasn't very good. It's truly a million-dollar view overlooking the ocean, which is exactly why we chose it for dinner on our day trip to SD. Unfortunately, our experience left us deeply disappointed. My mom and I were seated all the way in the second dining room, up the set of stairs, all the way in the back corner--far from the scenic ocean view and the main dining room--next to an area where extra chairs would be stored to be hidden from view. Watching other guests, mainly Caucasians, enjoy the beautiful views while we were tucked away made us feel unwelcome. We asked to speak with the manager, Mr. Bates. While he was professional, he was unwilling to accommodate our request even after we explained that we would be happy to wait for a window table. This dinner was meant to be a special treat for my mom, and it would have been our first time dining here. Instead of feeling welcomed, we left feeling that we were treated differently. I can't say for certain why we were seated where we were, but the experience left us feeling as though race and ethnicity may have played a role. Because of how disrespected we felt, we asked that our reservation be canceled. Judging from the non-stellar Yelp reviews about the subpar food with the outrageous price, why would anyone settle for a peasant table to be discriminated against? My husband and I shared the Tomahawk Ribeye and it was good. It usually comes with one side and we got another side. We had the mushrooms which I would not recommend and the potato purée which I do recommend. I am not a big fan of mushrooms But my husband likes them and he didn't enjoy them. The potato purée or basically mashed potato was seasoned well. The steak was prepared really well. This was a disappointment. We expected a high level dining experience, given the price, but we found it to be a quite average (and below average, considering the price range) experience. From the valet service, managed by a single individual and with a waiting line and complete disorganization at the end of the dinner, to a pretty bad experience with the seating choice. We asked a window table at reservation. I understand that window table requests may not be fulfilled sometimes, but when we arrived we were offered a table on the very final row of the restaurant. We asked if we could wait a little bit to see if a window table was going to be available soon, and we were given a very robotic response that I would understand from a fast food, but that's not acceptable at a venue that charges so much money for its food. Then after some insistence, we were given a better table that must have appeared magically given that initially we were not offered that option. Still not a window table. At the exact moment we were seated, a couple at the window table close to us left. We asked if we could be moved and they responded, again in a very non personal and rude way, that once seated we could not be moved. Note that the couple at the window table left while we were being given the menus. Apart from this pretty bad experience, everything else seemed quite average, from the quality of the decor, the quality of the view (maybe it was a low tide day, but the view is nothing to be impressed about), to the type of silverware and decor at the tables, to the sparkling wine we were served that was clearly been open for a while. This is like a 2-3 star place that strongly wants to be a 5+ star place but just can't be. Last time at this restaurant. There are so many better alternatives. read more

One of the classic places in San Diego! We've known about this place for years and it wasn't until this week that we finally made plans to check it out. We snagged early reservations at 4:30pm Sunday which was right when they opened. That's the best way to secure a table next to the window. You're literally on the beach Tip: our server suggested with high tide being June, July and August times that they suggest to pre-book in advance since that's a popular time to experience the restaurant with the high tide coming up to the glass windows. After reading other reviews, I was worried about a possible fish smell but we didn't experience that at all so I wonder if it was just something in the air since that can happen in San Diego. No fish market smell PARKING we got super lucky with street parking but noticed they have a $15 valet parking out front that opens when the restaurant does FOOD -The focaccia table bread with the butter & volcanic salt is SO good! We got a few rounds of that. -We shared the Endive salad which had perfectly picked vegetables. The salad was a little tricky to eat but was still delicious -I had the truffle risotto -my husband had the roasted chicken -we shared a few sides: truffle root fries, carrots and mushrooms. I highly recommend dining in the lounge area at the Marine Room restaurant in La Jolla. This is a special occasion restaurant and I saw many people celebrating birthdays. The main dining room can be a bit pricey and sometimes the portions are small. The lounge area has a late night menu that starts around 8 PM till closing, and you can also eat anything off of the main menu from the dining room. I thoroughly enjoyed the lobster roll and the dip that comes with it is heavenly creamy and a perfect combination to dip your lobster roll in. Think a French dip sandwich except make it seafood. It was the best lobster roll I've ever had and almost tasted like a crab sandwich with butter from heaven! The Chardonnay that comes from the tasting menu off of the evening menu was so crisp and delicious. I highly recommend it! It's not a full glass of wine but more than a tasting, but it worked out great for us because we were just eating small bites after having a very large lunch. My favorite thing that I ate, however, has to be their mud pie that I had for dessert. It was supremely delicious. However, I hate to admit that if you have a strong sense of smell then it might be challenging for you because this restaurant smells like a fish market. It was hard to get used to at first, but then when my wine arrived and after two or three sips, for some reason, the smell didn't bother me as much. I know that the menu is mostly seafood so it makes sense but I've never smelled a seafood restaurant that smells like this. Someone in our party doesn't eat fish and seafood so they had a really hard time adjusting to the smell. But if you like fish and love, beautiful ocean views then I highly recommend this elegant restaurant. Another cool thing about this restaurant was learning about its history in the lobby through its many newspaper clippings, and historical recollections. The Marine Room was originally built in 1916 as the Spindrift Inn, before being transformed into the iconic restaurant that opened on May 29th, 1941. The Kellogg family, specifically Frederick W. A San Diego staple. I use to love coming here many years ago. Last night was the first in at least 8-10 years. Great location and one of the most beautiful views (esp during high tide). Came here last night for my friend's birthday! The service was good - Rich was our server. The seafood options were solid but not "OMG amazing" but solid. It was nice to hear most of the seafood options are gluten free! Huge plus. I ordered the tuna tataki - 8.5/10 for me (could have added more tuna for a better value - the tuna slices were small) but flavor and texture was excellent. My friend ordered the scallops - she liked it 9/10. Another friend ordered the trout with charred brassica, coconut salsa macha, red chile maitake, cassis chayote - it was good except the coconut salsa macha made the trout taste fishy. If you order this - order the coconut salsa macha on the side. Another friend ordered the Blackened swordfish with crawfish etouffee, forbidden rice. She is from the south (Houston, TX) and said the etouffee wasn't great but for California standards - it is what it is. One of my friend's ordered the Thai curry soup for a starter by the way but said it was too salty. For the sides we ordered the Brussels sprouts and mushrooms 10/10 I would come back JUST for that!!!!!!!!! Ohhhh but the focaccia bread, although it wasn't gluten free - I still ate it and it was amazing!!! Hunter also assisted us, I think he was the server assistant? Had the absolute pleasure of dining here as part of our anniversary celebrations with my husband and it was wonderful! We were not there during high tide so we did not get the drama of the waves crashing against the windows but since we had our little one with us I think that was actually better. The focaccia and butter starters were a great way to start our meal We ordered the trout tartare and the Peruvian crudo and they were delicious! The tartare was slightly more lemon forward with a stronger fish taste while the crudo is sweeter and just melts in your mouth. I still think about it months later. The textures were all perfect and the flavors were all well balanced. The filet mignon was tender and flavorful though the peppercorn sauce was sweeter than I like. The cauliflower purée was wonderful and I liked that there was a roasted cauliflower on top as well. The bone marrow was also a generous portion. The Brussels sprouts were the unexpected stars of the meal for me. They were so soft and caramelized. I could have had 3 more servings they were delicious! If you like Brussels sprouts I highly recommend you try these. This is the definition of a hidden gem even the locals do not know where this is because it's hidden in a residential area. The restaurant is beautiful inside, and the view of the waves crashing on the windows while we were dining was spectacular. Great views from every table, I believe. This would be a great place for a special occasion or to "show off" our beautiful city to visitors! We chose The Marine Room for our daughter 's high school graduation dinner because of its reputation as one of San Diego's premier dining experiences. Unfortunately, our experience was incredibly disappointing. Our reservation was at 6:30 p.m., and we didn't leave until after 9:30 p.m. The evening was plagued by exceptionally slow service from the moment we were seated. It took approximately 25 minutes just to receive water, and throughout the evening we felt as though we were invisible. Servers repeatedly walked past our table without acknowledging us, and we spent much of the night waiting--for drinks, for food, and simply for someone to check on us. We understand that restaurants can have busy evenings, but this felt like a lack of attentiveness rather than an isolated delay. When you're paying premium prices at a restaurant with The Marine Room's reputation, you expect a level of service that matches the cost and prestige. The most disappointing part is that this was meant to be a special celebration of our daughter's high school graduation. Instead of creating a memorable evening for our family, the poor service overshadowed what should have been a joyful occasion. We have enjoyed fine dining throughout San Diego and chose The Marine Room specifically because we expected an exceptional experience. Sadly, this visit left us hesitate to return. To their credit, the hostess who seated us and our waiter, Tom, both acknowledged the occasion -- appreciated, since you never know if a restaurant will do anything special for a milestone like this. The service didn't quite match that promising start, though. Tom never actually introduced himself, even though we noticed him doing so at tables around us. We also had to ask for iced tea refills ourselves rather than being offered any. Food-wise, both entrees arrived warm instead of hot, but the real issue was the three sides, which came out cold. We sent those back, and the replacements came back cold again too. To their credit, they did comp the sides after the second attempt and the food was delicious. Both cuts were juicy, with all the right textures inside and out. My girlfriend typically puts salt on everything she eats, but here, everything was salted and seasoned to perfection, and the salt cup remained untouched for the entire meal. This is really saying something. Yes, it's pricey... but you're not just paying for food here. You're paying for one of the most unique dining settings in San Diego, exceptional service, and a memory that'll probably stick with you for a long time. Took my wife here for a weekend getaway. We were excited to have dinner here and enjoy the ambiance. Service from our waiter was mediocre. As we were leaving my wife asked me to take a picture of her by the lounge area when the head waiter asked us if I had paid for our dinner. I replied yes I gave our waiter 2 $100 bills. And he walked away. He should have done his due diligence and asked our waiter first if we had settled our bill before approaching us. Me and my wife was embarrassed since many people were around. We will never come back here and definitely not recommend this place to friends and family. We actually drove 2 hours to have dinner here to just be disrespected. We were insulted/humiliated by this. Party of 2 on Sunday night. 3 1/2 stars for us. Valet parking was convenient and is $15, pay by card via text. Hostess was dry. Server was Tom, he's good but I felt pushed to order what I didn't want. I had mentioned I don't eat this late and when I wanted soup and a salad he said what meat would you like. Luckily I knew my husband would eat it. The cocktails were good. The food is ok. At these prices it all should be a lot better. The Lobster Bisque is not on the menu but can still be ordered. It was OK but not one that I would need to go back for. The 8 ounce filet mignon was cooked to perfection but still was lacking something that would've made it better. The heirloom carrots were really good. My husband ordered the swordfish without the mushrooms and he did like it and I tasted it and it was fine and I'm not a fish eater, but I would've preferred over the fillet. We came to Marine Room to celebrate my wife's birthday and had an incredible evening. The Peruvian crudo, Tasmanian ocean trout, roast chicken, and chocolate pistachio crunch bar were all outstanding. Every dish delivered. But the real star was our server Lily. She was warm, knowledgeable, and made us feel genuinely special all night. I'd give five stars on her service alone, and the food more than earns the rest. We came here for our anniversary (: I have many notes, mostly all good! 4/5 star rating because #1 place was so clean, so beautiful upon first walking in. #2 the two girls at the front desk were not as friendly as I'd think for a place like this but were professional enough. #3 we got seated at a window, a beautiful view of the ocean at sunset UNMATCHED. However, window was quite dirty lol #4 our waiter Daniel was so on it and so professional, kind and deserves a raise #5 Our food was exceptional. SO YUMMY. I got the surf and turf and my husband got the wagyu ribeye #6 they also brought us a complimentary anniversary slice of cake which was decent but not exceptional (: #6 my mocktail (almond fizz) Was THE BEST I've ever had. I had 2 of them. #7 nothing beats the view. That is mostly what you pay for and good service and good food brought us to the most expensive dinner we have ever had. So was it worth it? The service was absolutely amazing, great view of the sunset and ocean. However I was a little bit unimpressed by the food. Their filet seemed to be lacking flavor, and it didn't quite melt in your mouth. I think if you're more into seafood you might like the food better, it just wasn't for me. read more

What a lovely surprise anniversary dinner with my love! Service + views + food + presentation = 10/10! I loved watching the waves and the sun starting to set it was beautiful! The bunny drink was pretty good, but strong aftertaste of ginger. 7/10. Lychee martini: I liked the lychee fruit. I personally thought the drink was strong, but it was not too strong for my husband! 9/10 My husband was overjoyed that his favorite sparkling water was there! S.Pellegrino 10/10 Rosemary sea salt Focaccia bread 10/10! My favorite type of bread Truffle yucca fries! I really enjoyed this side. I added salt from the butter salt from the focaccia bread and it was heavenly delicious. 9/10 Peruvian Crudo: A piece of art that is full of beautiful colors! Fish was freshly caught that day. One of our server when he refilled our drinks he recommended we try the Focaccia bread dipped in the sauce! Lovely taste, thank you! The sweet drop biquinho pepper was so cute and yummy! 8.75/10! Local bluefin tuna tataki: 9/10! Three thick slices. I liked the seared part of the tuna that was coated with crisp ball. It reminded me of the Crunch chocolate balls. The seared part of the tuna tasted like fried pork belly! I paired everything on the dish together and it was delicious! Lumina Farms Filet of Lamb: This will be a bias review for the lambs . I prefer not to eat lamb, but I tried it even though I was a bit scared to. It definitely would be 9/10, but I just don't like eating this type of meat. Dessert: sorbet 10/10. The blood orange was my favorite! Coconut was really good. Raspberry was okay. Anniversary dessert creme brûlée: 8.5/10! I just don't like the sugar top, but everything else was yumm!
