There's not much in the world I'd call "perfect" but this is one of them. Delicious and varied food options (today's special was rock cod fish tacos--so good) and a wonderfully friendly, easygoing staff. Although I'm a visitor to Friday Harbor, it was clear that they're also a key part of the local community, yet I felt as welcome as an old-timer. I only wish they were open on weekends so I could go back to try more food (though I totally respect the desire of the family that owns this spot to have a family life with their adorable daughter--she stopped by as I was leaving). The food was so good that I bought a bunch of things to bring back to my cabin for dinner: crab cakes; Vietnamese-style pork and calamari sausage(!); sautéed young kale (the owner let me try this first since I'm not a fan of chewy kale, nutrients be damned); and roasted cauliflower. I can't wait for dinnertime! Dinner update: the crab cakes were really, really good--I'm pretty picky about crab cakes since I really want to taste the crab. These were perfectly proportioned so the crab flavor was full but still nicely spiced. The Vietnamese sausage with Nc Chm sauce was also really delicious. Tasted very authentic to me. I ordered the roast beef and rocket sandwich. I was starving and didn't think I could finish it... But I did . Delicious and super flavorful with caraway seeds, dill mayo and pickled red onions. It came with a pickle, too.. The pickle was crisp and not soggy (sadly many places serve soggy pickles so I make it a point to mention it lol). Lovely front patio. Can't say enough good about this place!! Walking distance from the ferry. The best customer service, who can describe the food in such a way that even if you were not hungry, you will be! The food is amazing! Local, seasonal, and made from scratch. We had their burger special with grilled mushrooms. Seating inside or outside, and you can't go wrong either way. I love places like this. I am just a sucker for fantastic ingredients from local farms made into some really wholesome food. And I loved the fact that they had such an imaginative vegetarian sandwich (the gouda, green apple, mustard and sprouts with sunflower seeds). It was unusual but tasty and I felt so healthy after eating it. I had half of that and half the tuna salad, and boy, was that good too. I was excited to eat here with all the positive reviews. I wasn't impressed. I'm thinking maybe this place is good compared to others on island. I had the sister's favorite with ham, a roasted veggie bisque and my bf had the turkey cranberry and mac and cheese. It was all underwhelming. My favorite place for a meal in Friday Harbor! Ok, so it's the only place we ate (well, other than ice cream), but it was really good so I can imagine it being at least one of my favorites if I lived here. We heard later from a local that it's a place a lot of locals frequent (and strangely, it was not a place recommended by any of the locals giving us lunch recs...could it be they want to keep this gem to themselves?) - I think that's a good sign and I'm happy that Yelp! and TripAdvisor tipped me off to this place. We actually had a small amount of difficulty finding the place, which is absolutely ridiculous since Friday Harbor is something like 4 blocks by 4 blocks and The Market Chef is a block or so off of the ferry landing (my excuse is that we didn't take the ferry, so we were starting from a different point in the 4x4 area). When we got there, it looked busy but it didn't take long to place or receive our order or to find a seat. We ordered two sandwiches to split: a Roast Beef and Rocket and a I'll Take the Turkey. From what I understand, The Market Chef uses a lot of locally sourced food - whether they do or not, everything was very fresh and tasty. The roast beef was so, so, so, SO good. The bread was light and fresh, the beef wasn't dry, the horseradish tasted fresh and was the perfect complement. The turkey sandwich was also good...but not great. The turkey was dry and the cranberry sauce was overwhelmed by the turkey and the bread. Maybe there just wasn't enough of the sauce on our sandwich? The portion sizes are fairly large and we probably could've split one sandwich and we would've been fine, but we wanted to sample more than one item on the menu. Even with the portion sizes being large, I feel like the sandwiches might be a little overpriced - but only by a couple of bucks. Would definitely go back! read more

Their cookies are a must. We really liked this place! From the second we walked in staff was friendly, warm and helpful. Noticed they promote they are non-GMO and use local ingredients, which is important to me! Food was fresh and delicious. I ordered the half size tuna salad and it was a perfect size portion! My mom got the tuna sandwich- half size was large and a whole sandwich could be shared! Awesome business with fantastic food. We spent about 10 minutes sitting in the window trying to figure out what to get for lunch here after a chilly, rainy bike ride. It was difficult to choose because everything sounded really good. Our soup and sandwiches were really tasty and fresh. They sell beer by the bottle, so this is a great place for a vacation lunch, which should be the only reason you're reading this review, because if you are one of the six people who live in Friday Harbor you probably already work here. read more

This is our favorite lunch spot on the island. They use fresh ingredients and have daily specials which makes for an interesting dining experience. The coffee is good and they have a quaint little patio out back surrounded by huge lavender plants. There is also a sun deck on the front. 1 block from the ferry. Seems like they're training new staff who are not clear on all of the offerings. For example, the bus person said there is wi-fi available (which influenced my decision to stay) but when I asked at the counter and asked for the password I was told they in fact don't offer free wifi. Wine is on a rotating tap which is neat but it's $8 for Duralex 3.2 oz pour which I find pricey and disappointing. I had a half "not your mother's tuna" sandwich and wished it had been my mother's because hers is divine. This one was prepared on a small dry ciabatta roll and was sadly very bland. The tuna was great quality but today they didn't do it justice. The fresh salad case looked delicious but again in the spendy side for the portion. We decided to get a Key lime shortbread cookie to share for dessert. It was soft, buttery and melted in my mouth. They have a great selection of sandwiches, salads, soup of the day and coffee drinks. They also had a good selection of bottled drinks. The smell coming from this shop was enough to make you stroll in. Each sandwich was prepared with fresh ingredients and local breads from the bakery in town. It stayed busy and I could see why.
