I didn't get to check out The Masquerade at its old venue, but when I visited on a date I had a blast dancing to some fantastic soul and rnb. The acoustics bang (but don't echo), the concrete floor has a low level of stickiness, and the intimate vibe makes for great dancing all night. I wouldn't consider it one of Atlanta's best venues, though, because of their nasty bathrooms and walking to and the building itself looks like an abandoned haunted house (as Cynthia described), but I would totally return for another show. Just get your crunk on before dipping out there and then groove your night away. :) read more

This is a great venue and they appear to get killer shows and artists on the regular. If I lived closer I'd hit up a show here at least once a month. It's a bit confusing to get to--you have to walk through an archway into an alley and down several flights of steps to get to "Atlanta Underground," then make sure you know which of the 3 venues housed by The Masquerade your show is in. I attended an excellent show in the "Heaven" ballroom. Despite living in a city that gets more than its fair share of concerts I had to travel four+ hours to Atlanta for this show as the bands I was seeing were not coming to my city--the Masquerade consistently gets acts we don't. But the venue itself--it's surprisingly clean (bathrooms included) for an underground venue that hosts metal, punk, indie, and rap shows. The service and bartenders were super friendly, the security team does their job without being needlessly intrusive, and most importantly--there's not a bad view in the house and the sound is incredible. Listening to a noisy reverb filled band I could hear every vocal note, every chord, every drum fill--loud but clear with no (unintentional) distortion. Highly recommended venue. read more

The Masquerade has come a long way. I have been coming here for about 2.5 years now and the level of security has really been amped and the area feels much more secure on the weekends. Between the two stages they have upgraded the equipment and the shows sound pretty darn good. As usual the spot is well old and dingy so don't expect clean rest rooms or even floors lol but that's part of the appeal. When you go to a banging show here you aren't going to have a neat and tidy experience like on a cruise ship. read more

Visited here to attend the one night hip hop karaoke would be in town. All I can say is that the show was LITTY and everyone actually jammed to every song that was performed. They crowd was hype and attentive. Of course T.I. showed love by giving a cash prize to an contestant for rapping a verse to one of his songs and by performing a couple of hits. Surprise surprise none other than Young Dro another ATL vet came by and rocked the mic with some oldies but goodies. The cons about this event would be the AC wasn't blowing to good and the service was slow because there was only a few bartenders. On another note I danced so much I made myself hungry then I had to bounce, but overall it was fun. read more

Went for the Amine concert he was amazing btw and the crowd was lit the entire time. But the venue...standing room which I knew when I got the tickets but we was so jammed packed in there. Surely their was some code violations! I don't know if the event was just oversold or is this place really small. I never made it to the old masquerade so I don't know how this one compares. If u go wear comfy shoes bc it's no where to sit and get there early bc they don't open the doors until the show actually starts which means the show doesn't really start for another hour . Also park on the 3rd level of the parking deck cost $10 (not bad btw) and take the breezeway across then just got down a bunch of stairs and you're there! read more

After reading a bunch of reviews beforehand, I was TERRIFIED to be going to The Masquerade. But honestly it wasn't bad at all. It wasn't as hard to find as people were saying either. We walked from our hotel on Peachtree Street, which was about 10 minutes, and while there ARE a ton of homeless people in the downtown area and it can be scary, no one bothered us. When you get to the underground, you enter at Pryor Street and just keep going down the stairs till you come to Kenny's Alley. It's simple. Security was good and showed us where to go, and the staff who came through scanning tickets and stamping our hands were nice. We were going to a concert at the Hell Stage, and honestly we loved the whole atmosphere. Sound was great and from the balcony we had an incredible view. But we did get there kind early, so it was easy to find a good spot. We didn't get drinks, so I can't say anything about that. Just, if you've never been, be aware of your surroundings, especially after dark and you'll be fine. It's a great venue. read more

Countless shows, a couple sexual experiences, a metric tonne of alcohol, and 25yrs of musak... at the old location. Yeah "new location" you have big shoes to fill. Having invested thousands of dollars at the old location and meeting new people, having experiences, and seeing my musical heroes. I really hope that The Masquerade continues with the path of not-caring about dress codes, or caring too much about cleanliness. There are plenty of clean venues out there. Don't be one. From my first show seeing White Zombie/Pantera in 1992 to the last with Napalm Death, it was a good run. I know the move to Underground wasn't the best move logistically, but Atlanta needs The Masquerade as much as it needs The Omni, The Cotton Club, Swinging Richards, and MaryMac's, etc. I missed the Somber Reptile, and The Point, but people get older, and gentrification occurs. Money talks. The first visit to the new location was decent. Underground is a ghost-town otherwise, and maybe that's a good thing for the clientele that partakes in typical Masquerade stuff. Heaven isn't creaky and upstairs anymore, but maybe this is how heaven, purgatory, hell really are? Juxtipositional and side-by-side, with a mall-like alley way between? Who knows and who cares. I am here for musak and the occasional mosh pit. I look forward to creating new experiences, and meeting new girls near the smoking section for a quick old-fashioned. That's what it's gonna take, and I'm hopeful. read more

This place is a nice smaller venue for concerts. My main issue is that my pepper spray was confiscated upon entry. I understand the reasoning for not allowing people to bring pepper spray in; however, as a woman, I feel that there should be more safety measures (lids on the drinks, security right outside of the venue, etc) if they are going to take away many women's only sense of security. If you are planning on attending an event at this venue, make sure you don't try to bring pepper in so that you don't waste your money by having it confiscated and having to buy a new one later and make sure not to plan on walking home afterwards. read more

i've been here before, there was no ac i actually passed out from heat exhaustion and had to be taken in an ambulance. However, i was here lastnight and they seem to have fixed it. I went here to see FIATP in June 2017. While it is extremely hard to find (ESPECIALLY if you don't live in the Atlanta area), it is a nice venue. Standing room for a few hundred. There's three different places you can go into, Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory. My experience was in Hell. There's standing room at the floor level and a balcony up top. read more

They're fierce! I had VIP & Meet & Greet for Amine. I was not happy about being delayed. I paid $102 & had a receipt & my credit card. However everything was awful upon arrival. I was given a hard time about my purchase. It's the thanks I get for buying in Early. I am at this point not blaming Amine. But the venue was stating that he set the price. I've learned that it's Masquerade. Amine when you get into larger venues, I'll be there. No more Masquerade please!!! read more

I enjoy the Masquerade's new location a lot. I think it can help the underground immensely. I like the layout now, being in Kenny's Alley. It's like 3 separate venues. I do not like how parking is so much money. I've been to at least 8 shows there already this year and having to pay 10+ in parking is frustrating. You can't park anywhere else outside the garage unless you want your car to be broken into. Only gripe is the parking situation. I've easily wasted about $80 in parking that I could have used to go to a handful of more shows. Love the bands the Masquerade brings and the people running it are amazing. One of Atlanta's particularly fantastic venues, the old Masquerade, was gentrified out of its neighborhood and I read that they originally planned to move to the Westside, though neighborhood complaints there before they moved ruined that plan. The new Masquerade in the Underground space downtown is, as I suspected, a disappointment. If you know that corner of downtown, it's not a place you want to wander at night. And you don't have to if you park in the Underground parking garage, but that will cost you $10 and up for a concert. There is a zombie-ish feel to the area, but other than that, the new venue doesn't at all match the old one. Though, what bothered me most was the crummy, sludgy sound in the Heaven room. I saw the band Quicksand and I could barely understand the singer. His voice sounded the same as the bassist's voice and the mix was a mess. The opening band sounded just as bad. I was standing in the center of the room and from the back, it sounded worse. I remember the sound being excellent in the Heaven room at the old Masquerade. They overdo it with the light effects too. A good music venue is all about the room and the sound and this place is lacking enough to keep me from returning despite the unparalleled calendar of shows the club boasts. I hope they move elsewhere because the club is obviously successful and I know the Underground has been purchased and is going to be remodeled into something else. read more

If you left a good review you left it while drinking here because that's the only way you would see this place as nice. Total downgrade from the previous location. Smaller stage, smaller crowd area, run down, hobos wayyyy more in your face than the previous place, and prepare yourself for an oversold venue. I walked in and after moving around just a little and realizing there was no place to stand where I wasn't being trampled, I left. It wasn't worth it. If the fire marshal walks in during a show this place is done for. Fine by me. It's ridiculous to oversell something to a point people are standing by the door to see the show. read more

I also went to a late night Shaky Knees concert at Masquerade (see reviewer who saw the Dandy Warhols the same night I saw the Struts), and it was not a good experience. There was no warning to expect tight security, and we missed the first 30 minutes of the Struts due to long lines to get through security. First the crazy wait in the stairs, then the check to see if we had tickets, then the i.d. check, then a particularly rough and invasive pat down by some a**whole who evidently thought he was a cop arresting someone for murder. On the plus side, the sound mix was decent, although far too loud, and the place was relatively clean. The bartenders were friendly and efficient. Overall, not worth the trip. read more

It is ridiculous that there is no seating on walls where someone can sit! I am 63 years old I have been sitting on a cold brick floor!! My husband loves the music so I came for him. I asked the staff for a chair they said they could not give me one but at least 2 people got chairs!!! read more

I went to The Masquerade with my boyfriend to see our friend's band. Every time they play at The Masquerade we try to come to support them. I have never come across a no reentry policy any time I have been to The Masquerade nor have I ever had any issues with that. However, from what I've heard, they seem to pick and choose when to implement this policy. So, surprise! You may or may not be able to re-enter. Everything was going smoothly until my boyfriend decided he would go to the car to change his vape battery. A security guard comes upstairs to speak with me (I use that term VERY loosely as he really just rudely stated instead of having a human-like conversation) and he says that my boyfriend cannot come back inside because he ignored them when he left. He lies and says that they told him he would not be allowed reentry as he was leaving. I knew my boyfriend would not have left if that were the case. I go outside to see my boyfriend sitting on the steps right outside of the security checkpoint. The man from earlier is standing right there as well. Let me just say that this is the most condescending and rude employee that I have EVER had the displeasure of dealing with. (He is tall, older, husky, and he had a beard.) I informed him that my boyfriend was NOT in fact told that there was a no reentry policy tonight. They had a couple of signs that were obstructed the entire time we were there. They had a sign taped to the security table where you place your items from your pockets when you are frisked. So, the items placed on the table completely obstruct the sign AND there is never a verbal mention of this said policy. The security guard states that there is NEVER a night where they don't enforce this policy. This is a blatant lie as we have been here many times before and have not come across a no reentry policy. I ask if there is any way to let him back in, as he was uninformed and unaware of this policy. (Again, he would have NEVER left if he would have known because he missed out on the band that we paid to see.) I offer to pay again as well as to have him re-frisked. The guard rudely states, "Nope. Can't help you." Might I add, he threatened to kick out our friend, a band member, who came outside to plead with them on this situation. I was never rude; I did NOT return his condescending attitude that he so proudly wore on his sleeve. Yet, in the end, I was told that I was not welcome back, along with my boyfriend. This man has some deep-seated issues he needs to deal with before he works in an environment where he is in a place of enforcement. He has a severe attitude problem and a lot of insecurities. I also believe that this policy needs to be either removed or actually enforced EVERY time. You cannot waver on a policy such as this as it causes problems like what we experienced. read more

Literally no signs showing where the entrance is. We had to be directed by some random person on the street. Don't take literally anything with you when you go in up to and including pens. It is currently an hour and ten minutes after the show should start and I'm sitting on the floor as I was asked to move from the stairs and there are no other seating options. read more

Do not give your weapons (taser,pepper spray etc.) to the people patting you down. They will not give them back we felt so unsafe leaving and walking through town when we didn't have our self defense items that they pretty much stole from us and everything was so over priced and the room itself just felt dirty. read more

I am never going here again. Waited in line to get patted down. There were no signs saying what was or was not allowed inside, except for "no weapons" which apparently includes pens and pencils. They looked through the rest of my bag and let me in, and then AFTER I was in the venue was told I'd have to put my bag in my car and go back through security. If I could rate this place zero stars, I definitely would. The staff is extremely racist and rude. They do not appreciate black business at all, they will not treat you nice and if you are black and "look" like you are a threat or even if you are literally doing nothing at all, including enjoying your time, they will find a way to say you were breaking some sort of rule and kick you out. For my birthday, my cousin purchased us tickets to see some of my favorite artists and as soon as they were about to go on, a gang of staff members approach me with flashlights and ask me for my ID because they saw me pickup my cousin's empty cup of trash off of the speaker near the stage. One of the staff members goes on to tell the others that he saw me take a sip from the cup when I'm not sure how I could've done that when the cup was completely empty with gum inside. I tried to explain that I was just trying to help my cousin by throwing away her trash and they still went on to ask me for my ID and they told me that if i could not produce one (that said I was of the legal drinking age) that I would be kicked out of the venue immediately... I was not 21 at the time and this scared me because I had done nothing wrong. I was about to cry out of frustration and my cousin told me not to because they will have no sympathy for me and that they had done the exact same thing to her the last time she was there. So I ubered home and back to get my "ID" and they didn't even check for it when i returned. It was a complete waste of my money and time and It showed me exactly how they view people like me. I missed my favorite song by the group and wasn't even in the mood for the rest of the concert by the time i was let back in. Honestly hurt my feelings because they saw in my eyes that i was not lying and did not care, at all whatsoever, they believed whatever the white employee told them and made it a horrific experience for me. Will never attend a show here again. My first time here and it was awful. Security let my friend and I pass without checking IDs and giving 21+ wrist band as we found out they were supposed to do. My friend had gone to the bar to get a drink in the venue where she showed her ID and got a wrist band, however I did not have one because I hadn't ordered a drink yet and wasn't given one at the security check. So when I held her drink a worker came into the crowd pulled us out and instead of just going to the bar to get a wristband, I had to go outside the venue to the police and have them stare at my very real ID for five minutes, then walk back up the stairs to get a wristband where it should have been given in the first place. The worker was rude and could not explain the situation and even threatened to kick us out for asking why our IDs weren't checked in the first place. Believe it or not, this happened AGAIN an hour later! Now, both wearing wristbands, we were pulled out of the third row because they "couldn't see them" while people around us were smoking blunts.
