Chris stated that he offered us assistance and a resolution to our financial hardship. That is simply not accurate. The only communication we received was a reminder that rent was due, along with notice of a $56 late fee if payment was not made on time, followed by the statement that after six days we would receive an infraction notice. At no point were we offered an extension, a payment arrangement, or any form of accommodation. Additionally, the unit owner never reached out to us directly to discuss any alternatives or support. During our tenancy, there were serious maintenance concerns that were not addressed in a timely or satisfactory manner. When our apartment experienced flooding and the air conditioning unit was deteriorating, Chris was nowhere to be found. The A/C installation was so poor that you could literally see daylight around the casing. The flooring, which is supposed to be white, appeared black due to the condition, and the state of the oven was unacceptable. We documented everything with photos and videos. My mother, who worked in property management for over 10 years, personally inspected the unit and identified multiple issues that should not exist in a properly maintained rental. There should never be mold present in a water filter--period. We were also told there was a separate heating unit, yet we were left without a functioning heat source while the apartment was extremely cold. This is not just an inconvenience--it is a violation of California housing standards. Under California Code of Regulations, Title 25, Section 34, rental units must be provided with heating facilities capable of maintaining a minimum temperature of 70°F in all habitable rooms, and those systems must be permanently installed and maintained in safe working condition. Portable heaters do not satisfy this legal requirement. We were further told that the overall condition of the property was "not their responsibility," yet our lease binds us to their management, and we were refused contact information for the unit owner when we asked to address these concerns directly. At this point, we are requesting that all communication be handled in writing via email so there is clear documentation. Phone calls are not acceptable. This ensures there is an accurate record of what is said and prevents any misrepresentation of conversations. I will be sharing documentation so others can understand what our experience actually was. This is not about "image" or "quality control," but about accountability and ensuring tenants are provided with safe, habitable living conditions as required by law.

Where things changed was once we started discussing fees. Her leasing fee was 50% of the first month's rent. Since I treat my rental as a business, I asked whether there was any flexibility. She explained that the fee was non-negotiable because of the amount of work involved, which is a perfectly reasonable position to take. I later followed up by email, letting her know she was still my first choice, and proposed an alternative fee structure that would tie part of the leasing fee to the rent she was able to achieve. I thought it aligned our incentives while recognizing the value of her work. I never received a response to that proposal. After following up by text a few days later, I got a brief reply saying it "wouldn't work for her." I then asked a few additional questions about how she handles maintenance, and I never heard back. I completely respect that she has a pricing structure she doesn't want to negotiate. My disappointment wasn't that she declined my proposal. It was how the communication changed once negotiations began. The professionalism and responsiveness I experienced at the start disappeared, and I was left feeling ghosted. Once TNCR took over, they increased the rent by nearly 80% and added an additional monthly CAM charge for maintenance. The funny thing is, every time we submitted maintenance requests, they ignore us for months. After we have followed up tirelessly, send over technicians to do the bare minimum instead of working on a long-term solution (I'm willing to bet they are paying pennies to these technicians too). We were paying a ridiculous amount for a tiny space with 2 parking spaces. Our roof was leaking and moldy from the rain for months while they ignored our requests for assistance. It doesn't end there. After we moved out to a much better place, they had the audacity to send us a disposition letter not only keeping our security deposit, but requesting an extra $2k from us with no itemized receipts or details about what they plan to use it for. They demanded "$800 for general cleaning due to dust build-up." Wow, I didn't know a duster and some Clorox wipes would cost $800! I knew they are just trying to get any dollars they can out of us. Very shady. TNCR, shame on you for taking advantage of small business owners. For you to be both overpriced and poorly serviced is embarrassing. Pick a struggle. Don't rent from this company, they do not care about you at all.

I'm often on Craigslist looking for rentals, and I'm always happy when I come across their listings. The apartments I previously lived in have been remodeled and look incredible. My husband and I have compared all other rental homes to their properties. As for the negative reviews on here, I just wanted to add that they were nothing but nice to me, even when I wasn't always pleasant. For example, one time our in-unit washer wasn't working, and I contacted them. I was impatient and in a bad mood, and they got someone out to fix it fast. When my cat destroyed flooring in a unit, they were very understanding. They charged me to fix it, but it was a lot less than I expected. I mostly dealt with Brian and Mark, and they were great. If you ever see an opening at their 633 W Sierra Madre Blvd property, I highly recommend jumping on it. The units are so private and charming -- Especially the downstairs units with patios. No one can see into your unit, because the area surrounding the windows is gated in, and it's so peaceful there.

In short, I found the management lacked substantial communication and respect for the tenants, renting us overpriced old apartments. Ultimately, the reason I had to move out was the unwillingness and inability of SGV to address a building-wide pest problem that lasted nearly a full year, all while still continuing to raise my rent each year (during COVID!). My time in this apartment started off rather well, dealing with this saintly salesman named Barry, who I believe is no longer employed at SGV. Brian Abernathy was my primary contact in management. To their credit, I appreciated SGV's online portal for enabling a tenant to pay rent electronically, and to be able to submit service requests. And sometimes, these service requests were dealt with in short order, like replacing a broken washing machine within a week or two. However, my negative experiences with SGV outweighed the positive ones. Looking at some of the other negative reviews on this site, I experienced similar patterns to what they describe: extreme construction noise at all hours without warning when we're at home working during a pandemic; painting a neighboring unit and then sealing it up so the paint fumes vent into your own apartment overnight which leads to you being sick and is a health-code violation. When I'd complain about these things to Brian, he'd either not respond or just say "Oops, I didn't know the workers were doing that." or some other such nonsense. Ultimately, I just have no confidence that SGV has its tenants best interests in mind when making decisions, and who wants a management company like that? But the straw that broke the camel's back was this fly infestation that started in the summer of 2020. There were flies all over the place in all the units in the building. It was pretty disgusting. Management brought a handy-man by to dump some anti-bug stuff in our sinks, to no avail. This went on for months. Management continued to raise our rents despite the infestation. Ultimately I left the apartment after a year of this problem, because I just didn't want to deal with this infestation any longer. I cannot recommend working with this company.
