This was a unique experience that is set up very creatively. Think of it as a way to see multiple plays and performances, a type of choose-your-own-adventure. I thought it might be awkward or pretentious, but it really felt rather inviting instead, like you are taking part in something special. I cannot believe how much work it must have taken to coordinate all of the performances (or how talented the cast was). Even if there had been no actors, the sets and tone were on point. Very cool. It is like you're in another world. One gripe we had is that the experience got a little repetitive after a while (let's go in a room and see another person dance with a serious expression on their face and/or entice another cast member...at times I felt that none of it mattered/nothing really happens). But there are so many floors and things to see and rifle through, so that's okay, my personal preference is just that it could be a bit shorter. It is hard to stand out in a world of so much entertainment, but there are a few things about Sleep No More that I think I'll always remember. Considered four stars but decided on five because this is one of those things where you get even more intrigued after it is finished. I finally went to the Sleep No More play that I'd been seeing all over TikTok, and it felt so surreal! I'm talking an experience you never thought would be possible to have in your life. Especially since phones are locked up in small, borrowed crossbags you wear on you and photography isn't allowed, it makes the experience feel even mysterious. The music playing in different rooms and the decorations -- although "decorations" is really an understatement -- were incredible. The amount of detail is amazing, and even staff that weren't part of the play/plot were in character. I got chills walking through the rooms and up and down the stairs. (Imagine dimly-lit rooms with bathtubs, dark woods, and beds.) There truly is a lot of walking and movements involved as you follow characters throughout the play. (Please note there's a lot of walking up and down stairs, and there's also walking through pitch darkness.) Sometimes, you might even lose track of the characters you're following, and you have to walk around to find some characters that might be doing something interesting. I like how the play ended without much interpretation, which leaves you wondering. I personally felt like I could have made better decisions following characters, since I had gaps in the storyline. If you can, definitely go see the play with a group, since the more perspectives and minds you have, the more interesting your conversation about the experience gets. I also had a taste of the double shot while waiting for the play to begin, and it was good. It tasted familiar, like a hard lemon candy that'd be sold in an old timey candy store in Austin, Texas (very specific description, yes). read more

On a Friday evening, my husband and I came here to see Hypnotiyque and imbibed some pre-show cocktails at Gallows Green, the rooftop bar and restaurant. Upon checking in, we took the elevator up to the rooftop, Gallows Green, where we waited for a text summoning us to the realm of hypnotiyque. It was fairly quick and we started to head in about 15 minutes before showtime. Prior to the show, you must check your bag and you are given a cellphone case that limits you from using your phone during the show. Throughout the performance, you can visit the bar. The performance ends around midnight. All in all, it's a bit of creative, artistic fun. Be prepared to interact with the performers. Lots of fun. read more

The experience you get here is like no other it's something close to an isekai anime but ur just a witness to the multiple storylines that they provide. If you're someone who enjoys thriller, dark, mystery, and silent genres this is something you would not want to miss out on. The McKittrick Hotel is not and never was a real hotel. It is just a warehouse in Chelsea that has been turned into a theatre space. We came here to see Speakeasy Magick. The venue itself does look interesting. They have turned it into a place that looks straight out of the 1930-1940s. I read that they do Halloween balls here and it is easy to see why. The dim lighting and dark brown decor give off a haunted house vibe. The show left something to be desired though. Because they specialize in smaller and intimate shows, the shows are really overpriced. Speakeasy Magick was almost $180 for a basic ticket after the service fees. The production value is actually pretty cheap. You will be seated at a table with other people - about 10 people at each table. The show is mainly a rotating group of magicians that will go to each table doing card tricks. Once you look past the atmosphere, you will realize your money is what has done a vanishing act. read more

Those who have a greater appreciation & love for the performing arts will have a better understanding of Sleep No More. (Ps I'm not a theatre geek/nerd- I say this lovingly.) It is an immersive theatrical experience located in the McKittrick hotel dispersed over five floors. No phones, no photography, no talking, no idea what is going on, keeps this production shrouded in mystery. It is set at a hefty price, however I can imagine these funds went into the lease expense, the elaborate settings, props and towards the actors/residents. The story line is an adaptation of MacBeth but set in the 1940s era. There is extremely low lighting throughout, which exudes the darkness & moodiness that is to prevail throughout the story as it unfolds. There is no verbal dialogue, but intense interpretive dancing. SNM is a mixture of immersive theatre via the stylings of film noir & Alfred Hitchcock like suspense in a choose your own adventure fashion. If you attend with someone else, prepare to narrate your own story line experience instead of hanging onto to each other. I will most guarantee you every person you came with, will have experienced different stories and places than you. You will see things they did not & vice versa. I found it extremely helpful to have read specific detailed yelper reviews. Having armed myself with some knowledge provided me a compass in which I had the confidence & capacity to dive into what could otherwise be potentially be viewed as theatrical chaos, had I not been somewhat informed prior. What's the process? You have to pick a time slot, pre-pay & commit about 3 consecutive hours, donn a mask that resembles a mash up of Phantom of the Opera & V is for Vendetta mask which is worn to distinguish the audience/guests from the actors/residents, which you get to keep. Mandatory coat check is $4 pp, no phones are permitted and must be turned off or silenced and placed in a neck pouch that is then locked to prevent access. This is integral for everybody's enjoyment and participation. Plus there is some nudity ( as in full frontal & back) . So prepare yourself. You briefly wait in the bar/lounge area to be called by your playing card number which is provided upon check in. After a quick intro you are led into a room where a scene unfolds. It ended in a "fighting" scene, this tussle became acrobatic gymnastics. I thought what in the West Side Story is going on?? But then my judgmental opinions dissipated and I was like, these are some talented, strong, good stamina , effective story telling individuals. Bravo! Give me more! So your cue to move along and that a scene has ended is when one of the actors exits scene. You choose to physically follow that character or not. But prepare for the diehard repeaters to feverishly barrel through the crowd with no regard to keep up with the actor. You either have to haul tail or just lose the crowd. It will happen. This is where you're in limbo left to explore the cool sets and pilfer aimlessly through papers and props. That is until you stumble upon another active scene or a character happens to zip past you, you follow them! Be ready for some serious cardio folks. You will be going up and down and all around and back again down those flights of steps. So wear comfortable shoes. Leave the high heels at home. As for attire. It was a wide range. You do what feels comfortable for you. There were people decked out in suits & evening dresses, those in business casual and plain casual- hoodies and jeans. You're most likely going to sweat and walk a lot and negotiate lots of steps so keep that in mind. Originally I had no idea, but from reading the reviews prior to attending, they do one on one's, which apparently is rare. The actor interacts with a specific individual they choose from the audience. So at one point one of my sisters and I were in a particular scene and the nurse honed in on her. I was thinking ohhh it's happening! . My sister was apprehensive & had no idea what was going on. But she was whisked away and the door closed behind them. I had to ask her what happened after our SNM session ended. Something to keep in mind, have situational awareness. If you see the actor acrobatic gymnastic in your direction, you best move. They are very dynamic and the show must go on. Ngl. I started to lose steam midway through, thoughts of Ground Hog Day & questioning whether this was a never ending story raced through my mind. We enjoyed a cocktail here after seeing Sleep No More. I got the Old McKittrick. I was hoping for a nice smoky mezcal flavor, but the mezcal was overwhelmed by the other ingredients and made for a slightly medicinal taste that I didn't particularly enjoy. They also had a vodka-based cocktail which was much better. It was fizzy and fruity. In the lounge area of the bar, a jazz band played a short set including whimsy covers of Michael Jackson and Nirvana. The lead singer was great and the band seemed lighthearted which was a nice contrast to the solemnity of the Sleep No More play. read more

The songs they selected are amazing and the dancing is incredible. The bar is right in the show so it's easy to get drinks. I love the interactive part of it. Tickets were easy to buy, but I think the $12 service fee is a robbery We went to see Hypnotique at 10.30 on Friday. I am going to start with the end. The end is why I am giving four rather than five stars. It was muddled. Sometimes conventions are good, and the theater conventuin is that the entire cast comes out and bows to the applause of the grateful audience. The ending was so unclear that people just thought the performance would continue. It Is fun sho! If disorientation is your fetish, like mine, this show is for you! The creators did an excellent job with lights, sounds, and set changes to create a sense of disorientation, which I sincerely enjoyed. There are no seats, and the members of the audience follow the cast around from one dance or sing number to another The singer had a unique and powerful voice! All dancers were excellent, but one male dancer was a cut above the rest. The show doesn't have a straightforward plot like the Cirque De Solei model. There are hints here and there. The selection of songs and music was fantastic. Yes, there is nudity, but not nearly as much as expected. The men were dressed the entire time. read more

Review is for Hypnotique. The show itself was magnificent, the quality I've grown to expect from productions at the McKittrick. But I refrain from giving it five stars for several reasons: 1) Doors were supposed to open at 10, show to begin at 10:30. Doors did not open until 10:30 and show did not begin until 11 or so, which means I got to spend an extra 30 minutes standing in a line at Gallow Green, which was not okay (also, why is Gallow Green playing anything other than 1920s/1930s music? Listening to 80s-contemporary music really kills the vibe in that setting). There were no attempts to let us know why there was a delay and when we could expect things to begin. I finally asked an employee, who gave some vague answer about how things had taken longer than expected to clean up from the last show. 2) The intro to the show was awful, actors coaxing people to get up and dance inside a giant cube. It was boring and uncreative. 3) Our phones had been locked up in a pouch for the duration of the show, which I agreed with - it would have ruined things to have people playing with their phones. But they did a terrible job getting the phones unlocked after the show. We had to go and seek out an employee to unlock the phones. Why wasn't anyone there waiting for us as we exited? My girl friends and I did Halloween right by going to The Witches Ball. This place had everything! From Burlesque to Jazz, every floor had a different vibe. I loved what we called the blue room bc it had a live band that played great Jazz. The red room was a burlesque moment where there were ppl in BDSM outfits just posing and being sensual, the green room was like a haunted house exhibit, and the main room was a club. There were photo booths studded throughout. Open bar all night, but drinks are limited. No Tito's, no jagger, but it is open bar so I sucked it up and drank Smirnoff. Thank goodness no hangovers that feel like screwdrivers being drilled into my brains. Semantics: we had to buy tickets in advance (general admission is suffice. No need for VIP bc you just get a table with curtains. Who wants to be secluded?) You have to get a COVID test with negative results 24 hrs in advance and show proof of vaccination. It is annoying, but it allows everyone to feel safe and have a precovid like vibe. My girl friends and I had such a great time. It was definitely something I needed to let out steam. Personally, the night was interesting when a former engagement that I have not seen for seven years resurfaced. The mistakes of my early twenties coming to haunt me during the spookiest time of the year was an unwarranted, but funny moment. Overall, could not get enough of this place. Would go again tonight if the body was able to handle it. I will be taking a seat tonight, but I 100% suggest going to The Witches Ball here if there are still tickets available! The Speakeasy Magic show is a great opportunity to see some of the best close-up magicians anywhere. If you bring a large group (I think the tables hold 8 or 10) it will be even more fun. The magicians all have distinct personalities and tricks. The stage show portion is fine but not at the same level as the close-up magic. Unfortunately the venue is poorly run. Imagine a broadway show where everyone is will-call (there is no ticketing system here) and the venue has allocated exactly one person to check every single audience member's name. In fact, there are two check-in points and both are inexplicably slow, each run by one overwhelmed person. It took us 40 minutes to enter. Note the show doesn't actually start until maybe 30 mins after the listed time. Meanwhile, the bar and waitstaff can't keep up with the arriving guests. Be ready for 20+ minute waits for cocktails. Consider ordering a bottle instead. read more

What makes this a very interesting entertainment venue is that it takes place in an old historic hotel on multiple levels! It is a fascinating immersive experience in which you follow different actors throughout the hotel and watch as each plays out their roles and the plot evolves at a different pace. This modern take on Shakespeare's MacBeth comes alive through the talent and athleticism of each actor. Its theatre and modern dance melded into an engaging performance! You must check your coat and phones in as you enter so as not to disturb or disrupt the performance. So bring as little as you can. When you enter, you don a theatrical mask, which identifies you as part of the audience and not the cast. Absolute silence is paramount to enjoying this experience as there is no dialogue but rather mime, motion, and dance. But it is quite easy to follow along provided you're familiar with the tale of MacBeth! There is the speakeasy bar area where you wait sipping cocktails or mocktails and nosh on snacks till your group is called. Advanced tickets ordered online are required, so don't just roll up there without one or you'll be turned away. Highly recommend before they shut down for their final performance, although they've extended another month because it's so popular! read more

Really fun date night. Really cool venue and show. We went to the magic show here and we loved it. Beautiful space, great drinks, fantastic up close table magic. The only downside is the price. It's just way too expensive for one evening. It's about $200 a person and that doesn't include drinks. 10 Feb. 2020 This was the best thing we did in New York. We were looking for unique experiences; we weren't sure what to expect, but we bought tickets for dinner and a show, The Woman in Black, and arrived at the "hotel." We were led inside this mysterious building and the elevator attendant brought us to our floor. We were led to our table which was a private booth - in a train car! Not just any train car - an old-timey one that makes you feel like you're in an Agatha Christie novel. Our server, John, was an absolute delight (he reminded us of Dr. Who ((Matt Smith)) in the best way; whimsical and eloquent). The menu was delicious and offered classic English fare - my pot-pie was perfect, and the sticky pudding after was to die for. The cocktail menu was also impressive, but I am currently obsessed with gin-aviations, and asked John if such a thing were possible to procure. He knew precisely what the drink was, and immediately had the ingredients brought over from their neighboring restaurant to make it for me! Then, showtime. It turned out I was familiar with the story - it was made into a good horror movie some years back - superbly acted and engaging. I literally screamed, I was so IN the story. What a magically eerie, beautiful, and brilliant experience. Don't miss it - we'll surely be back next time we visit the city. read more

My husband and I went to a dinner and show called, "At the Illusionist's Table". Scam! I repeat scam! It sounded cool and all that's why we've decided to buy a show and get an all inclusive dinner. Food was ok, nothing great, the second course, braised beef was good and tender. The moment we got seated, in our assigned seat. I realized we just got scammed! There were about 26 "guests" at the dinner table. Very intimate and interactive. So, our assigned seat was towards the back of the table, hmmm, surprise surprise! Scott Silven, our host, the "Illusionist", seated his assistants aka plants, near him, that way, when he picks them, they know how to answer and know what they are supposed to draw. He is a very good story teller, who tells you a story about his childhood and his granddad, and performs mind reading tricks along with it. I wished he picked on me to think of a number or even to draw something out, but of course he didn't, he picked his plant actors and actresses so that it'll go exactly as what he had planned. If I didn't know those were his assistants, I'd give this dinner and mind reading show a solid 4-star. But, I figure it out from the start so I didn't really have a kick out of it. By the way, Scott served us Sun Whiskey (126 bottles made) is not real, can't find any information about that on Google. Sorry, Scott, from Scotland, you'll have to find another story to tell and hire different actors and actresses cuz I saw your actress left right after the show ended! read more

Sleep No More. Such a haunting and exhilarating experience. I have been twice and each time it was completely different. On my first trip over 4 years ago, I didn't follow a particular actor, choosing instead to explore this Hotel with all of the details (you can touch everything, open drawers or books, read, feel anything) and these details are so deep you have been transported to a different era. Actors and followers would come and go into the rooms I explored making me feel like a ghost wandering about watching the living. This second time I chose to follow an actor - he ended up being a secondary one who interacted with many other ones, which was great. I lost him at one point, found him and then he led us to a strobe room where he ended up acting shocked and left, I stayed because the scene was, well...weird and disturbing but hypnotic. I actually found him again afterward and continued the journey. In the speakeasy before and after the show we enjoyed drinks and music, not wanting to end the experience... I have on a separate occasion been to Gallow Green for drinks and food and the options are absolutely delicious, my next stop will be for brunch. This is a must do if you are in NYC! read more

This review is for THE WOMAN IN BLACK. It actually was, a terrifying experience. I thought I might genuinely die of heat stroke or dehydration during the performance, where room temperatures must have been near 90 degrees, and they only allowed limited access to drinks at a bar that was staffed with individuals who shuffled with the hauntingly slow gait of someone paid by the hour. I was terrified by the other-worldly mannerisms of these bar-tenders, their supernatural appearance was that of a group of senior-citizens with advanced Parkinson's disease who were so close to death's door that they became possessed by evil spirits from the other side who were determined to deny any of your multiple attempts at rehydration. The play itself gets 3 stars, mediocre telling of a tale that is actually quite frightening when done correctly. Management was also terrible. I was waiting at the bar for 5 minutes, about ten minutes prior to the start of the show and a guy comes over and tells me the bar is now closed while another patron is ordering drinks right next to me. I actually don't even drink alcohol, I just wanted a water to try and survive dehydration while I sweated in the oven-like temperatures in the audience. Nope, bar was apparently only open for friends of the staff who got to order drinks from the "closed" bar throughout the show while I watched all this from my incredibly uncomfortable bar stool that doubled as a 14th century torture-device. Do avoid this and watch the movie. read more

' THE WOMAN IN BLACK ' - the worst show I have seen in my entire life. I just wan't to start out by saying I've seen numerous shows at the McKittrick including Sleep No More, The Illusionists Table, Speakeasy Magic and several others. They always deliver. I hate to leave this review as I am sure all the actors worked very hard but The Woman in Black was quite possibly the worst show I have seen in my life. It felt like we were in a college lecture that we didn't wan't to be in...it was painful to watch. It felt like watching a Shakespeare play but worse. There were only two actors and you have to sit in the most uncomfortable stools/seats. There are polls and people blocking the view of the stage. We ended up leaving at the first intermission it was that terrible. read more

This review is in regards to Bartschland Follies, the late-night cabaret show in the Club Car on Fridays and Saturdays. My friend and I attended on a Friday night and got the general admission tickets for $35. We're old biddies and it was late and I had heard mixed reviews and didn't know if we'd stay for the whole thing, so I didn't want to spring for the reserved seating for $75. General admission is apparently standing room only (which is not really stated clearly on the website). Literally not even the possibility of a chair. We arrived at 10:30 as specified on the tickets, and were among the first to enter the venue, so we were at least able to secure a (standing) high top table with a decent view of the stage. However, there is no indication anywhere of what time the show actually starts, which was annoying, and the downside of arriving at 10:30 on the dot is that we had to wait for over an hour for the acts to begin- sometime after 11:30. People who arrived later than us didn't have to wait as long, but probably couldn't see as well because they had to stand all the way against the back wall. Aside from the misery of standing for so long- I removed my heels at some point- the show itself was really cool. Susanne Bartsch and her co-hosts are silly and charming, and the acts were all either funny or impressive or both, as intended. The whole thing was about two hours in length but there was a break at some point. The format is a little more casual and free-form than the other events I have been to here -the magic stuff, etc.- and in some ways feels more like a party or gathering than a production. The performers and crowd are diverse, supportive, and welcoming in a way that makes you feel proud to be a New Yorker. PSA for the prudish: tons of nudity (male and female), lots of expletives (everyone seems to love the "P" word), and some gross stuff involving peanut butter sandwiches that may make you never want to eat one again. read more

Yes forever. This is my absolute favorite thing to do. I have traveled from Buffalo, NY to attend Sleep No More on several occasions, and most recently attended the Halloween party, The Inferno, which did NOT disappoint. The Sleep No More experience is unlike anything else I have ever experienced, and is different every time. I can not even put into words how enthralling it is. The rooftop bar is cool, and I love the speakeasy feel. The jazz band is amazing, and the absinthe cocktails are wonderful. The staff inside of the bar are decent; you can tell they are swamped but with a smile. I truly can NOT get enough of this place or experience. read more

Went to see Sleep No More this weekend, and while it was very hyped up by friends and family, it was a great experience. I got the tickets for only $85 each I think because it was during the Superbowl, and I found this to be an excellent value. TIP: I would suggest not doing any of the more expensive packages, they didn't look like they were worth it. PROS of Sleep No More: -the set of the McKittrick Hotel is unlike anything I've ever seen in my life. Outstanding, spooky, and totally immersive. -The build up to the show is also awesome. Walking through the dark hallway to get in feels like the real deal. I can't think of another show where you can get this close to actors this talented. -The cast does a great job of making sure everyone gets where they need to be for critical scenes in the story CONS: -It was sooo crowded. Literally there were 25 people following the main actor, and they were not shy about pushing to the front to see what was happening. -There is a lot of running up and down stairs, and it was hot and you are wearing a mask. After an hour, my girlfriend and I needed to sit down and we're in pretty good shape. -It's a little hard to follow. There's no talking, but I feel like I got the gist. Overall it's a unique once-in-a-lifetime show, if you are considering going, DO IT. Definitely be aware of the cons going in (it's not a relaxing experience like seeing a broadway show). read more

Great venue with uneven performance lineups. The now-iconic Sleep No More was a revelatory breakthrough when it premiered some years ago, and it still holds up as an outstanding example of performance art today. This hotel has no rooms to stay in, but is a venue for creative shows. In addition to the Green Gallow rooftop bar an oasis with a hidden entry. We had a wonderful time at the McKittrick Hotel. We started on the rooftop Green Gallows. The drinks are delicious we also had some dinner. The personal pizza was tasty. The Cuban sandwich and the tuna were really delicious as well. After nourishments we went to the Club Car for Speakeasy Magick. The ambience was perfect for romance and magic. The club car doesn't disappoint we were gobsmacked with the amazing tricks. The variety is awesome as was the entertainment. The piano player constantly picks out tunes, ala honky tonk style which takes all parties back in time. I went to go see women in black. It's a performance by two guys who tell a ghost story. It was outstanding. Really amazing how actors can remember so many lines and pull off a performance so flawlessly. The venue itself is really beautiful. And the people who work there were so amazingly nice. Sleep no more: My wife and I went here for a night out. So glad we did. First of. Kudos to all the actors. You guys are unbelievable. If your reading this. I want to write this review encouraging you to go see this for yourself. Because I don't want to take away from or give anything away about the production. But it's one of the coolest experiences we have had in a while. It's truly unique and is really well done.
