I have finally made it in, after living in the neighborhood and walking about the line for 3 yrs. Tomi Jazz is a very unique place. The vibe is cozy cabin-like. Despite it being very small, and crammed, the service is excellent, efficient, and the atmosphere is incredible! If there was a place for maximalism, it is here. They have so much decor, all over. From vintage American, to Japanese, and French, etc. The trains that run above your head add more to the mess. But, somehow, it is comforting, despite all that is going on. The food is excellent, and although they are famous for their croquettes, which I was actually less keen on, their cod roe pasta/udon is absolutely stellar. Never have I had such a deep seafood flavor with the egg texture and cream. It is delicious. The katsu sando is also incredible, and generously portioned. I would say the cocktail program is not as good, the Zen matcha vodka was way too vodka strong and not enough matcha or balance. The earl gray infused cocktail was nice however. After waiting in the line, in the rain, for an hour on a Saturday I asked the host when the best time to come is. He told me Monday and Tuesdays around open are the best and I can confirm there was no line. Small intimate space, chose your table wisely as the close tables are a bit loud for talking but the further tables don't get a great view of the music. They have a pretty interesting drink menu, my favorite of which was the plum wine but save that for your last drink, it's a bit sweeter. All the food was great but the cod roe pasta and Okonomiyaki were stand outs. Also would recommend the green tea toast for dessert, really good. Tears were nearly shead over a dropped piece of bread at the end of the night. Overall really fun place with a super cool menu and wonderful music but would highly recommend going after work on a week day if that's an option for you. read more

Very cool bar. I got there 90 minutes before opening on Saturday and was first one in line. They seat everyone staggered so be prepared to wait if you aren't one of the first ones in line. Went to Tomi jazz on a Friday at 5pm and the line was already quite long and not moving fast. But we were ready to wait and excited for some jazz. After 1.5 hours, we got a table inside but no view at all on the jazz band, which is a shame for a jazz club... Fortunately, after the appetizer, the waiter offered a table at the bar (probably knowing this was a bad table), unfortunately we still couldn't see the band as a large pillar was obstructing the view. On the food side, we ordered the okonomyaki and the udon. They were fabulous! The food and the vibe of the place are definitely worth the hype. But if you are going for the jazz part, as we were, I'm afraid you'll be disappointed in the audience. People are going for instagram now, not the music, so few people were applauding. One of my favorite spots in New York! The line can get crazy so definitely get here early. But it's worth it for cozy vibes, delish food, and great live jazz. My favorite dishes here are the Omurice and the Mentaiko Udon. I could finish the mentaiko udon by myself no questions asked. I've ran across my fair share of jazz clubs in NY but Tomi Jazz stands out amongst the most unique for its unique intimate environment ,incredible performer's and eccentric cuisine. ENVIRONMENT It's quite easy to walk right past the recluse entrance on 53rd St. The line of individuals outside is the only "tell" that you've made it to the right spot. As others have mentioned, the wait times to enter can be quite excessive but upon stepping past that last outdoor heater(a godsend) you're met with a barrage of lovely sounds, whiffs of scrumptious food and an intimate oasis that resembles the hull of a ship. FOOD During my visit, I tried the Sea Urchin Cream Croquette, Truffle Fries, and the Seasoned Octopus with Wasabi. The standout was the Seasoned Octopus which had just the perfect amount of kick via the wasabi. Tomi Jazz is a remarkable addition to the NY jazz scene and its popularity is well-justified. While seated there were a plethora of guests taking pictures of the performers, food and decor which is quite easy to understand given the outstanding presentation of it all. Had an amazing night here for my dads birthday. Aside from having to stand in the cold, the wait was so worth it once we were inside and enjoying the food. It is very tight inside, so the limited seating is understandable. But they do a decent job in making everyone feel as comfortable as they can with the limited space. The drinks were good, i had a frozen lychee which was really good, hubby had the Alexander, and my parents got the Pearl Harbor. For food, we started with croquettes: shrimp, crab, & corn. Magic -Worth Every Minute of the Wait! I went in with high expectations for Tomi Jazz and I walked out even more impressed. This place is the quintessential NYC jazz bar experience. The Experience: It's a cozy, intimate Cocktail Jazz Bar where you can enjoy live music while sipping on drinks and having a bite to eat. The atmosphere is warm and authentic--it feels like you've been transported to a hidden basement bar in Tokyo. The Food & Drinks: The Cocktails: Truly top-tier. They are well-crafted, balanced and far better than your average "jazz club" drinks. The Food: Even the "simple" dishes are executed at a high level. I had the Pasta and it was surprisingly delicious and comforting. I was so busy enjoying the vibe that I completely forgot to take a photo of it! A Fair Warning: The only catch is the popularity. Food: I ate the cod roe udon spaghetti, truffle fries, and various drinks including cocktails (I am afraid I forget which ones, but they were all great) and sake. The truffle fries were very standard in the best way. Hot, crispy, and umami paired with an addicting aioli-type sauce. The star of the show was the cod roe pasta. So unctuously creamy and wonderfully slurpable. How can you go wrong? Whoever thought of replacing traditional spaghetti with udon was a genius. Service: The service was quickly paced and always checking up to ensure you have everything you need (probably also to get you in and out as quickly as possibly for the next hungry guests haha). No reservations here unfortunately, just wait in line and hope for the best. We waited for approx 2 - 2.5 hr for a 2 person table. Ambiance: Tomi Jazz is almost as hidden as a speakeasy with only a minimalist sign leading down into a suspicious stairwell. I am still an amateur when it comes to jazz lounges but so far, the ambiance cannot be beat. The cozy atmosphere, moody lighting, and eclectic space will have you forgetting about the arduous wait in line you just had to endure. This space is what it feels like to get a warm hug after trudging through a cold winter's day. Little trinkets and knick knacks adorning the walls and ceilings really elevate the place. Decor was beautiful. We loved the moving trains up towards the ceiling. They also have a live jazz band playing, quite loud if you're sitting right at the front and it is a small restaurant. I am a sucker for ambiance and this place gets 10 stars on ambiance alone. From the intimate dark environment, live jazz band, lit candles, background chatter and vintage Japanese decor, this place is a real gem! Not to mention the food is delicious. Additionally, the staff all speak to each other in Japanese, which adds to the authenticity of this place. They are casual and accommodating, the busy bartender even offered to take a photo for us after watching us struggle! You will be elbow to elbow with the other guests, and Im not sure if the jazz band teleported into their tiny corner but it's amazing that they managed to squeeze in. I adored this place. Even though we were waiting for our friend to show up after work, they were nice enough to let us sit inside the restaurant, right next to the jazz musicians. The interior decor and vibes were really unique, warm, and cozy. It's a small tight place, so I recommend coming early or you may have to wait awhile to get a seat inside. I was stupid for thinking that the line might be a little shorter since it was a Wednesday on a colder night... We got there at 6 and ended up waiting 1.5 hours still. When I got inside, I could see why. It's a super tight space, to the point where I was afraid that my backpack was going to knock something over. I loved how they decorated the place; there was something to look at every single inch of the space. We were initially seated in a separate room towards the back, which I honestly didn't mind. It was very cozy and quiet, very easy to hold a conversation here. We ordered the curry croquette, crab cream croquette, omurice, and yaki soba. After we got our croquettes, they said that there was a table that opened up closer to the performers. We ended up being right in front of them, which was very cool but hard to really talk there. You wouldn't expect it at a jazz bar, but the food was incredible! The omurice is probably my favorite in the city. The yaki soba was very flavorful, and I loved how it was cooked in the egg. The curry croquette was a lot better than the crab cream croquette though. Despite the line, five stars for the vibes alone. Great experience at Tomi Jazz, but is it worth the hour-long (at minimum) wait? Depends what you are looking for. We went to Tomi Jazz on the Sunday of a long weekend, hoping that there would less of a crowd with people out of town. They open at 5pm, so we arrived at 4:40pm to get in line. They seat one party at a time even after opening, so even though we were among the first 10 parties in line, we weren't seated until 5:30ish. Music doesn't start until 6pm, so plenty of time for them to funnel people in. The service was super friendly and helpful!! We were given the option between a few open tables, and after choosing, the waitress informed us that there would be practically no view of the band. She even gave us the option to move seats for a better view! Really appreciated the heads up since it was our first time here. The restaurant is sooooo tiny though!! Literally shared space with tables if you are near the band, so adjust your expectations accordingly! I believe there's a separate seating area upstairs, but I didn't get a look at it. Drinks are STRONG. The Zen was soooo strong and packed a punch at first sip-- I wouldn't recommend unless you are a fan of strong drinks. I had the Mandarin Slushy, which was a lot more palatable for my preference of fruity/sweet drinks. The food exceeded my expectations as well. For starters, we had the Crab Cream Croquette, which was nice and creamy inside, and the Fried Chicken Legs & Thighs. The Fried Chicken was equally as enjoyable! Very flavorful and crunchy. As for mains, we tried the Cod Roe Udon (my personal favorite) and the Omurice! Both were great. The Cod Roe Udon was nice and creamy, and the udon noodles were al dente. Walked into Tomi Jazz in Midtown East and instantly felt like I accidentally time-traveled into a Tokyo basement where cool lives permanently. Every dish was excellent, making it difficult to branch out on future visits since I'm already eager to enjoy these same items again. We were seated directly in front of the band, which provided a fantastic view of the performance, though it did make conversation with my friend a bit challenging. One note of caution: my friend accidentally burned his finger on the table lamp, so I recommend diners be mindful of the lighting fixtures. What an EXPERIENCE!! This place is the cutest underground jazz gig ever. It is VERY small and crowded but it still feels so homey. The servers were incredible. Tomi Jazz is a very special and unique restaurant in NYC that combines truly amazing Japanese food with live Jazz music. After returning home, we thought about all of the places we enjoyed dining at in NYC and this was our number one favorite place for dinner--no kidding. We arrived early for the dinner seating and were first in line at the front door. I would recommend getting there early if you'd like to get in the first seating. There is limited seating as it's a bit crowded, but it has a cozy feeling inside like you're in an old school jazz club. The servers were attentive and friendly, and recommended items, but the menu has a lot of great choices so you can't go wrong with anything. We enjoyed all the food (as you can see in the many photos) and the highlight which was my favorite dessert that I have had in many years, was their Honey Toast with green tea ice cream. It is just amazing. If you love Jazz music and Japanese food, you are going to love this place. --------TL;DR-------- PROS: live Jazz music with really talented performers, amazing food--each bite is perfectly flavorful, and their Honey Toast with green tea ice cream was the greatest. My favorite food item was the omurice, I think it was the most flavorful Demi glaze sauce I have tried in NYC. The croquettes were also good, but I don't think I would order them again. The ambiance was absolutely LOVELY inside and I loved all the little details they have, it really made me feel like I was transported into a new place. We ordered: - cod roe spaghetti: a must get, so creamy and the roe flavor cuts right through. - omurice with demi glaze: also a must get, the egg is really nicely cooked, the sauce compliments it well. - omelette with crab: could skip this, was inferior to the demi glaze dish. I have nothing but good things to say about this place. Truly feels like a hidden jazz club in japan. Everything from the deaign, to the menu, to the staff. This place executes at a super high level. I was extremely lucky and waited only 15 minutes to get inside. I was able to snag a solo bar seat and enjoyed a whisky and a toast w green tea ice cream. They warned me it was big for one person and i said nahh i gotta do it for the vibe. There was a trip playing, one guy on bass, one guy on drums, and one guy on electric guitar. I was actually in the area and meant to go to No Work Allowed, but I accidentally got in line for Tomi Jazz. I decided to stay since I've heard so much about this place and wanted to finally cross it off my list. Even on a random Tuesday night, the wait was about 40 minutes for two--so I can only imagine how long it gets on weekends or busier nights. Since I had already eaten, I just came in for a quick bite. I ordered the Pudding a la Mode ($12) and Avocado Spaghetti ($16). The dessert was delicious--everything was super fresh and had the perfect amount of sweetness. I had never tried avocado spaghetti before, but it was surprisingly good--creamy and al dente. I'd definitely come back to try more of their food, but I really don't like waiting in line. Also, there's a $10 per person music charge, which I didn't mind too much. That said, because the space is so cramped, I ended up sitting in a spot where I couldn't really see or enjoy the live music. That was a bit of a letdown. read more
