Wow, this place is the greatest for gifts for those confusing people who have a house in CT with a pool and a grill. It is also a great place to buy myself something, and my intellectual brother in law who loves fancy cocktails. But I digress. I thought of the gift before I trekked down from the UWS, and called the store to find out if they had it. The clerk (Robin) was amazingly helpful on the phone, and even suggested that for what I wanted I should bring a canvas bag or backpack and I should get a book to go with it since it is a gift that might require explanation. I went down there and bought the heavy salt block in question which she picked out for me and tied to the "cooking with a salt block" cookbook with a cloth ribbon. There was some popcorn sitting out on the counter that I sampled, and when I realized it was so delicious because it was truffle salt, I bought that as a gift too. And then when I suggested I get myself a humble present in the form of a finishing salt not terribly pricey that I could also use for cooking, she guided me most expertly. The young woman knew so much and was so helpful, even though she was not feeling her best ( post-birthday hangover, was the explanation I got out of her). I really went just for the salt block, but there is a whole section of bitters as well, with a book all about bitters. I had been there before, but I forgot what a treasure this place is. I will go there for many more presents. I would be pleased if I too received a present from The Meadow. BTW, they give gift receipts. Robin gave me one without asking, perfect. read more

I rarely write Yelp reviews unless a place blows me away, and this one made the cut. On a recent girls trip to NYC from out of state, we stumbled across this absolute gem of a store. Granted, I absolutely LOVE salt so this was my version of heaven, but even my friends who have less than obsessed relationships with salt absolutely adored this lovely little shop. You can also stock up on incredible chocolate bars, bitters, you name it. And the owner and employees are incredibly sweet, which just makes a stop there even more worth your time. Okay...so candles and wax-made goodies are great 'n all but I have yet to be accused of going gaga for either bitters or chocolate yet, despite this, the slew of eclectic items totally floored me at Meadow. What the place lacks for in size, it packs time and again over in variety and eccentricity of the collection. For instance, there is a wall of specialty premium chocolate. Yes, a whole seriously tall wall. Another wall is filled with spices such as truffle salt that is oh-so-very scrumptious and sneakily offered at the register via sample popcorn. Yet another section in the back is pipet-topped bottle after bottle of bitters for fancy cocktails. If you like any of the aforementioned things, this store is a wet dream for you. read more

This is may be my favorite place in all of Manhattan and a veritable foodie's wet dream. The 10' x 20' space is chockful of art books, to wild and classic flowers, to finishing salts and their delicate accoutrements, and of course the wall of exotic organic and fair trade chocolates. I can find a gift for anyone in this place and am always met by intellectually curious staff who are thoughtful, knowledgeable, and warm. I wish I could have this store as an extension to my home as it is part living room, dining room, and kitchen with all sorts of goodies, secrets, and wonder. While taking myself on a walking tour of the W.Village I walked into this shop because the outside decorations were so inviting, only to discover that they sold many kinds of salt. This is an interest of mine since I discovered the wonders of pink salt on everything from ice cream to watermelon. The gentleman who helped me explained a lot about the various types of salt available and recommended the Alaskan Sea salt to try on iced cream. I was intrigued by our conversation and did purchase the salt. I havent tried it yet on ice cream, however it was wonderful on my dinner salad also, believe it or not, on peanut butter!. I am very much looking forward to returning to try more of their products. read more

I was very disappointed in their customer service and won't be patronizing this place again. I purchased a bottle of bitters with what turned out to be a defective "regulator cap" (the plastic thingy that enables you to place just a few drops at a time in your glass). Because the cap was loose, it came off, and half the contents of the bottle spilled into my drink. the woman behind the counter told me "Gee, that's too bad; why don't you write to the manufacturer." The correct response from The Meadow, in my view, would have been: "So sorry about that. I'll replace it at no charge." The shop should have taken the onus off me for that loose cap and sent it back to the maker themselves. Instead, it was, "Not our problem." read more

My wife and I came upon this little gem in the West Village on a Friday night and were delighted by the selection and the quality of the products. We were looking for some special gift ideas for family abroad, and the offering of salts and chocolates seemed like the perfect gift to bring from NYC to the foodies in the family. The clerk (Andrew) was very helpful and knowledgeable and did not mind spending quite some time to help us pick out just the right items. I have shopped here several times over the years (I live on Bank St), nice selection but the saleswomen have often been rude and the flowers have not been fresh for the price. It's like a library of CHOCOLATE. The staff is so helpful and knowledgeable about all of the chocolate there. The matcha chocolate they picked out for me was DIVINE. So bitter and smooth and creamy and PURRFECT. this store is incredible. i am a salt fanatic and spent over an hour in here trying different salts. i love that you can try them all! the prices are pretty reasonable too. they have a ton of interesting chocolates and bitters as well. i also picked up some spicy honey, which i have roberta's bee sting pizza to thank for the obsession, the honey is phenomenal and actually has a great spice level. the guys that work here are more than happy to help and offer opinions and suggestions. so glad i found this spot! read more

This place is very nicely curated, and I was pleasantly surprised at the friendly service. I guess I'm just used to horrid service from young bored supercool Brooklynites? They definitely had some hip ladies working here, but they were all very friendly and knowledgeable. They have a great selection of salts, chocolate, and flowers. Well...i will begin by giving u all a little back ground. I have been wanting to go to the salt store FOREVER. I love salt, i explore salt, i find salt and its origins fascinating. I found myself on my own and having some free time in the west village (my husband and i recently moved out of the WV- so not as convenient) and i was stoked. On my list, meadow salt store! I had been once before about a year ago but bc there was a bitters making class in session we werent really able to peruse the salts. they invited us to join so instead we happily joined the class to learn abt and make our own bitters-cool! still a score but not what we ultimatley came for. So for the past year i have been trying to find a chance to spend at least in hour in this amazing niche store. so tonight i enter, so excited they are open at 6:30 and begin to look at the awesome wall of salts. I am the only one in the store. The lady staring at her computer doesn't welcome or acknowledge me until i ask how exactly the process works- can i put a certain amount in a baggie myself or do i have to purchase the premade jars? Cold, short and defiant answer that really tells me nothing- "its all right there, see the copper bags?" Ok, but do I do it or do You? she says she can do it but doesnt seem to care to explain any further. ok ill figure it out myself as this still isnt clear and you are back to your computer- wouldnt want to bother you. i ask her what some of her favorites are- she says depends what they are used for- cooking i say- condescendingly she says "there is only one cooking salt here (fleur de sel)- these are finishing salts" (DUH..) Ok fair enough- she again, goes back to her computer. So no favorites- alright ill just have a nice gander. I then ask if there is a description packet of the diff salts somewhere. She tells me the owners wrote a book and its "right in front of me"- i see it, its an inch thick- riiight. Im like ummm? She tells me if i go online i can find all the descriptions- hmm what if i dont want to paw through a million descriptions on a tiny device? I am lost. I pick a couple of salts out- 2 from maine and 3 others that look interesting. i am from maine originally so thought that appropriate and proceed to place them on the counter. I move onto bitters, annoyed at this point and try to find something else she may be more intersted in...AND is willing to actually talk to me about. There is a station with lots and lots of bitters- i ask her if these are out to make your own? (remembering the bitters class my husband i took) she says NO. i say, well how does this actually work (like the salt, TALK TO ME) shes says, "they are for sale". "ok" i say, still confused b/c some are half empty, and i voice, well "some are half empty tho?" she says "well thats so you can try them" then i say, ok makes sense (FINALLY, why should i have to ask so many questions to get here?) so i say, "then you cant experiment on your own, correct?" answer "no" so i bring up that i asked these questions b/c i took a class here a while back and thats what we did. i somewhat have her attn now but i am so frustrated with the customer service i begin to walk out...not paying for the 5 little jars i put on the counter (leaving them there of course). one was for a friend in chicago i am visiting this wknd, bummer. and she suddenly cares and says 'well did you like the class?' i say, 'it was fun' and just walk out deflated, upset and so let down. i consider myself a friendly, personal and passionate person...for my job in finance i deal with people daily and value a pleasant, attentive person. i know what that means. i also know i had plans to buy the crap out of that store and i could have been more friendly, enthusiastic and personable person than the b*tch behind the computer. if the owners happen to read this- its jan 31st, the time was 6:45pm, the woman needs to have a coloring so her roots arent coming in darker...yea that girl. i dont even write posts like these, and had to join yelp to post this....but thats how p1seed off i am out it. and for those readers who read this rant, i hope she isnt working when you visit this lovely find. read more
