A few times recently, in a fish fry specific group on social media, I saw pictures of the…read moreFisherman's Platter from The Marsh Inn and each time I knew I had to have it, even with it being a 40 minute drive from where I live and in the middle of nowhere. I was able to get out of work early on a Friday and make my way up there to beat the dinner rush. In addition to the Fisherman's Platter, which I got with potato pancakes, I ordered cheese nuggets. The cheese nuggets were not what I was hoping for. I wanted a nice crunchy breading, but instead they had the cornmeal-like breading that I can't stand on cheese curds because it doesn't get crunchy and retains too much grease. I ate some because I didn't want to waste all the money I spent on them, but I didn't finish them. If you want a large fish fry for a reasonable price given the amount of food ($20.95 as of 2/24/2023), the Fisherman's Platter is no joke. The meal consisted of six shrimp, four pieces of cod, four pieces of bluegill, two pieces of "perch", and three potato pancakes when you choose that for your side. The potato pancakes were not homemade, but that's not necessarily a problem. I appreciated getting three of them while most places would probably only give you two. The shrimp was very lightly breaded, almost to the point of not being breaded at all. It was a good contrast to the breading on all of the other items if you don't want everything heavily deep fried. The four pieces of cod were small and were probably the equivalent of two regular size pieces at most other restaurants. The bluegill where the greasiest of all the items and had more of a farm-raised taste than a fresh-out-of-the-lake taste. I put perch in quotations above because I believe this was pike, not truly perch, based on the size, shape, and flavor of the two large pieces. Not bad, but not the quality of yellow perch and not surprising since pike doesn't cost nearly as much as yellow perch. I thought the cod was the best of all the seafood on the plate. I'm not going to go back just for that, but if I happen to ever be out that way again on a Friday, I'd stop for the cod with potato pancakes and maybe pair them with the shrimp to get the contrast in texture. As a note, The Marsh Inn is cash only. They have an ATM with a $2.75 surcharge (as of 2/24/2023) for withdrawing.

The Pioneer Keg in Theresa was the closest place that was open in my bookmarks and I knew of at least one menu item I wanted to try, so I pivoted and went there instead. To go, I ordered the brick cheese cheese curds and a 1/2 pound grilled cheeseburger with fries for the side. I opened both containers to take pictures right away and my first reaction was disappointment in how plain and limp the fries looked. To top it off, they were barely salted. This was an upcharge from chips, too, which made me regret paying the extra money. I was excited for the cheese curds, but they also didn't live up to expectations. The breading was, I dare say, chewy with only the very tips where it was dropped into the fryer being crunchy. They ended up being the highlight of the meal, though, which doesn't say much. Other places that sell grilled cheeseburgers have both the top and bottom buns be grilled cheese sandwiches with a burger patty/patties in between the sandwiches. Apparently not at The Pioneer Keg. All "grilled cheeseburger" means to them is the bun should be replaced by pieces of grilled Texas toast. There wasn't a single speck of seasoning or salt on the burger patty and cheddar is not a flavorful cheese to use on a burger, so that was underwhelming to say the least. I give them credit for the meat having a fresh quality to it, but that's not enough to make me want their burgers ever again.

I haven't made the taco and Cajun brats yet, so I can't comment on those, and I didn't care for the mac and cheese brats, so I wouldn't get those again. The beer, onion, and butter brats, however, were outstanding. They tasted exactly like a brat that had been soaking in a beer and onion bath. Easily the best and most accurate tasting beer brat I've ever eaten. I would gladly go out of my way to get more of these.
