Unethical billing practices and unprofessional staff. The front desk staff were rude, disorganized, and uninformed about insurance. One receptionist smirked when I asked basic questions. Another, Norah, told me I "didn't do the adult thing" by not reading the fine print. Our insurance covers 90% of services, but the clinic estimated only 75% and collected more upfront than was owed. They also charge a 3% credit card fee. After reviewing billing codes line by line with our insurer, we confirmed several services the clinic claimed weren't covered actually were. When we questioned one procedure, staff told us to get the service codes from the insurance company ourselves because they "didn't know" them. They also couldn't explain why my bill and my partner's bill showed different amounts for the same procedure, just blamed it on "the tool." On top of that, they upsold me toothpaste and charged $75 for irrigation, insisting it's "never" covered. Our insurer confirmed the toothpaste was covered and that irrigation is typically included in standard procedure coding and should not be billed separately to the patient. Multiple times I requested an invoice after paying and was told billing staff had left for the day. No patient should pay without receiving documentation. I also developed a painful sore under my tongue immediately after a procedure. The doctor dismissed any connection to the treatment, though salivary gland irritation from dental trauma is well-documented. The clinic wanted to charge me again just for a follow-up evaluation. Do yourself a favor, call your insurance and verify every single charge before you pay this clinic anything. They either don't know what they're doing or they're hoping you won't check. I hate leaving bad reviews, but unfortunately my experience at this office was below subpar and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. I've been experiencing extreme tooth pain, and had an appointment booked with my regular dentist, but the pain was absolutely unbearable and I needed to get in sooner than my dentist could take me. Neither of the 2 doctors at this office could figure out what was wrong, as I didn't have any cavities. They both thought that the problem might be gum recession, and recommended a deep cleaning. I've been told by several dentists that deep cleanings are often a ploy for extra money, since most insurance covers a regular cleaning. However, I was already numbed out and out of it, and in SO much pain that I agreed to it. Beware of dentists who ask you to sign paperwork fate you're numbed up... During the deep cleaning, they knocked out one of my fillings in the area. While this could have been a "bad/ old filling" like they suggested, I've never had this happen. The blame was placed on me and I had to sign to pay for a new filling. The moment I stood up for myself and said it didn't feel fair that I was paying even more for a new filling that I didn't lose myself but was knocked out by the team, the mood in the room changed and I was met by rude behavior. I have extreme dental anxiety and it's very clear that this office is not equipped to handle such patients. After my filling was replaced and the deep cleaning was done, I was sent home. I asked them if they could prescribe me anything for the pain, which was a level 10/10. They told me Ibuprofen and Tylenol (I told them I was already doing this, and it wasn't working. They refused anything further). When the numbing wore off about 2 hours later, my pain was even worse than when I went in originally. I called and asked for a prescription for the pain, and yet again they refused. The next day, I went to another dentist and they explained to me that the filling was done incorrectly, and that my bite was now off. I had to have them drill down the filling. They told me that the dentist from the day before was lazy and didn't finish it correctly and just wanted me out of the door. There were even pieces of the old filling still showing up on X rays. They said that the deep cleaning irritated the area more and shouldn't have happened, because now I have to wait several days for all of the swelling and irritation to go down to get any further work done. I ended up going to the emergency room last night for the extreme pain. The ER doctor told me it's absurd that the dentist would not give me antibiotics or pain medicine and that I need to find a new dentist ASAP. Avoid at all cost. read more

Not sure where these 5 stars reviews on customer care are coming from because I am not seeing it! Dr Shelley is extremely rude and doesn't not care about her customers at all. Makes rude remarks about the state and color of customers teeth in front of other customers. Claimed that she was the best dentist my friend was ever going to get, but treated her like shit. On top of this the receptionist was incredibly unprofessional and condescending about the fact that my friend couldn't afford all of the services they were insisting upon. Even tried to get her to sign up for care credit without reading all of the paperwork. The receptionist literally said, "oh you don't have to read all that". It is incredibly predatory. I had last seen my regular dentist not even two years ago. Then, after a thorough exam and a good cleaning, my teeth were in perfectly good shape. Nothing was needed, as had been the case for the previous 4-5 years. But now I needed a new dentist as my regular dentist of 25 years had retired. So I found The Melrose Dentist on Yelp and, with the positive reviews, it looked pretty good. Also was a short walking distance from my home. I walked in, expecting a simple cleaning, but soon learned I needed 7 fillings and 3 crowns totalling some $4500. What?? I was shocked and wasn't expecting to spend that kind of money. So I was going to leave it at that, my $200+ dental visit, but was suggested I at least get a cleaning. (I've always got a cleaning included in the price of my dental visits). So I thought 'okay' - at least I'm getting some work done and my teeth will be clean and good for the time being, until I can get some dental insurance. So I pay $400+ for a cleaning but the dentist herself didn't do the work but instead an assistant was pitching in. It was nothing like the many cleanings I've had in my life. Most cleanings might've even hurt a little, certainly some discomfort, but this "cleaning" was more about the fluoride they were putting on my teeth. I would've been better off saving the $400+, going home and spreading Colgate over my teeth. Anyway, I would've given a one star here but the receptionists were so pleasant. So if you're in the area, maybe pop in, say HI to the nice receptionists but do not get your wallet out. Me? After waisting $600+, I applied for dental insurance and when that kicked in, I went to a new dentist who told me all my teeth were in perfectly good shape. read more

I would not recommend this place to anyone. They are only after your money and will try to charge you for services you didn't agree to or even receive. I called ahead of time for a cleaning and explained that I was pregnant, so I did not want X-rays. I made it clear I only wanted a basic cleaning, and they confirmed that was fine. When I arrived for my appointment, they made a huge deal about the X-rays, even insisting it was "safe" during pregnancy. I told them I was not comfortable and only wanted the cleaning. Instead of respecting my wishes, they pushed other unnecessary exams that were not covered by my insurance--anything they could do to bill more. They even did a "visual exam" and claimed I needed braces, which felt like they were just inventing reasons to upsell me. In the end, I got the basic cleaning I asked for, but months later I was shocked to find out they billed my insurance over $300, plus charged me $150 out of pocket. My insurance confirmed I should have only owed $41. When I called to dispute it, they brushed it off as a "mistake" and said they would look into it. This place is dishonest and predatory. When I stood for the X-ray they have near the door, I don't think my smock was put on correctly by the nurse. Dr. Sheily ignored me and made me wait 6 and a half hours to do a procedure that only took her 10 minutes to do. I was there from 11:44 to 6:40! She numbed my gums 5 times because the numbing kept wearing off. I was in so much pain and she did not care about me in the slightest. She finally finished when I was the last one there. Dr Sheily is seriously the absolute best dentist I've ever gone to! Everyone in the office is so amazing and accommodating. The office is clean and comfortable. I went from poor dental care to being provided all the tools to take care of my teeth and gums effectively. I started coming to Dr Sheily in January 2023, and since have seen such a big improvement in my oral health. The team is so fun and friendly and they give great help. In November 2023 i had such a bad TMJ flare up I couldn't even open my mouth without pain. Dr Sheily gave me a few solutions and ultimately we decided on invisalign to do double work. Straighten my teeth and fix my bite. We immediately took scans and she went to work getting my invisalign journey started! I'm really glad I found this dentist. I hadn't been to the dentist for about 3 years due to covid. The whole staff is super professional, kind, and they work with cutting-edge technology. Dr. Sheily is a cool lady with great bedside manner, willing to be frank and clarify concerns without being condescending or demeaning (a problem that I've had with previous dentists). I'd also like to talk more specifically about Dr. Oren, the dental surgeon. I had a few bottom teeth with deeply recessed gums, to the point where a gum graft was medically necessary. The thing is, the gum grafting procedure is quite expensive - $2000 per tooth, and I had 4 teeth that needed the procedure. Fortunately though the dentist was flexible enough to arrange a payment plan for me so I didn't have to drop all that money all at once. Not only did Dr. Oren do a great job, but he also... decided to add an additional graft during the surgery... for free?? Amazing generosity. And the gum graft healed very nicely and turned out great! read more

How disappointing this experience has been overall. At times I thought I found a great dentist like when they offered noise cancelling headphones and a blanket but the other experiences out weighed those. I mainly wrote this because I tried to work with them but have received no help. I spent over 3k during about 5 main visits. They make it seem like you have no choice but to get all the services they say you need. They don't throughly go over costs with you, but rather say the totals quickly and ask you to sign. There have been times when I've asked a follow up question the billing representative sighs and makes it seem inconvenient. They also do not provide receipts unless you specifically ask for one. Some dental scans are not covered under most insurances for adults, but you aren't informed of that in advance, instead you find out later that you need to pay out of pocket for the service. They also aren't organized with appointments. They will text stating that you need to schedule when you have an appointment already. I am covered for basic appointments every six months per my insurance but they told me that I should come in every four and will schedule you for four unless you make a point of it. That would mean the third visit a year is out of pocket if you don't notice, say something, reschedule. For one of my last appointments, I was on the way and was maybe 15 mins from the appointment time and they called to ask me to come in about a half hour later which is unusual. I ended up getting another scan because I was told that I needed to replace a dental appliance and that I had a cavity forming on a tooth it was attached too. I came in a week later on 11/11/24 and among other things asked to see the cavity on the X-ray, and to discuss the issue with the appliance. She said the cavity didn't show up on the X-ray but she could see it and tried to show me but it was hard to tell. I asked if there was an update from the specialist, since it was a week after my appointment. She said not yet and that the specialist comes in on Wednesdays, so I waited. And waited. I forgot even. Once I remembered, I called on 12/31 two times, on 1/3 and 1/6. They finally replied and said they didn't forget about me and that I would get a call back that week! So I waited again, until 1/24 and called again. Then again on 1/28, with one more call on 1/30, over two months since the scan and the appointment when I was told work would be needed. I expressed the dissatisfaction and instead of requesting information and a follow up, I noted that if I didn't get a reply, I'd make other arrangements. During all of this, I got a text noting that I needed to schedule an appointment when I in fact already had one, which was scheduled too early, I requested to cancel it, and had to message again to make sure that the appointment was indeed cancelled because I got no reply to my first request for cancellation. I feel scammed and mistreated. I paid for services I might not have needed, perhaps did not need or did not want & I paid out of pocket for two scans (one from my first appointment and another on 11/4) but never got feedback on the second scan. These are just some of the issues I have had at this dentist and it is very disappointing. Both regarding professionalism and accountability. The dentist even made comments about doing dental work for me that would make me like "a normal girl". I know what she meant but it didn't make me feel good. She also said my teeth weren't perfectly straight mentioning Invisalign on most visits if not all, even though I told her that I had recently finished treatment somewhere else and wasn't interested at that time in more work being done. read more
