I would have left hungry if it hadn't been for the appetizer. My dining partner ordered the cheesy Chicago dip, and I ordered the chimichanga. Both appetizers were delicious. The sauce for the chimichangas could have had more of a Southwest cake taste and not a dill taste, but overall, it was delicious. I ordered the beef tallow smash burger with ranch-battered fries. The fries were hot and crispy and had great flavor and texture. On the other hand, the burger was burnt chard and tasted like three full salt shakers were put on it. The bun was not toasted but black and burnt. It was edible. My dining partner ordered a mustard-glazed chicken with roasted potatoes and broccoli. The potatoes and broccoli were delicious, but the mustard sauce tasted like a bottle of mustard that had been opened and dumped on the chicken. Again, this meal was edible. She then ordered shrimp tacos, which came out nicely presented and tasted fairly well. The shrimp was grilled, but it was also kind of burnt. Whoever the kitchen staff is does not need to be cooking in the kitchen. They did a horrible job, a poor representation of this beautifully decorated, excellent-location restaurant. The tiny city of Greenville seems to be trying hard to create an atmosphere of urban sophistication in its little downtown. They've accomplished this with the Merchant House. Inside you get the brick wall warehouse feel and it's not phony. The bar is well stocked. If you like the minimalist feel you may enjoy sitting on backless round stools, but if not, this makes the bar not a place to linger. That's too bad as it's a beauty otherwise. The dining room offers some seats in the window where you can people watch while dining. It did get a little chilly though. There is an open second floor seating area for busy times. I was delighted with the trendy and thoughtfully curated cocktail list, and that Cranberry Limoncello refresher was perfect. The menu is chef driven and very creative- unique twists like rice krispies in the batter of the Monte Cristo, and Prime Rib on the Poutine. I really liked the Monte but would have loved it with some syrup, sorry I didn't ask. Husband had the Poutine, I got a taste of course and that meaty flavor just permeated the waffle fries perfectly. But they had me at Scotch Eggs. I don't think those can be had anywhere else in a three county radius. They were masterfully executed, so good that we got another order to go. Service was polite and professional, but it was incredibly rushed. So much so that it knocks off a star. We came to Greenville for the horse parade. Made reservations at the Merchant House 10 days ago. Checked yesterday they had no reservation. After manager approval they agreed to honor the reservation. We had a great server, Tiffany. The kitchen could not support her. We had drinks. I tried a fall special. Carmel apple spritzer. Wonderful. My husband tried Maple old fashion. It was good also. Scotch eggs for appetizer. Very good. Then dinner. First they were going to serve rib steak when we both ordered prime rib. Had to wait for re-serve. Told my husband he would have dinner comped due to mistake. Advised not necessary but wait staff insisted on comping him. Pre rib was so tuff it was impossible to eat. Since my husband's was comped, he hated to return the meal and ate it anyway. My meat was so tuff I could not cut it. They brought another piece from the same roast and it was equally tuff. ( My husband had just stated if they had not comped his meal he would have returned it. It was awful meat) The manager came over and said she would comp my dinner but since my husband could eat his they took away the initial comp We weren't trying to get free food, just decent food and I explained to the manager. I also pointed out it did no good to keep serving from the same roast, it was evident it was a bad roast and she needed to get back with her provider. If I were her I would not serve anymore during this dinner service. Would I come back? Not for the food based on what we had. (They even charged for sour cream and butter) Our wait staff service was outstanding, the rest of the staff could not support her Even our reservation was screwed up. What an amazing dining experience! The food was amazing. Well seasoned, great flavor! The service was also great. We tried the scotch eggs, which were balanced, not too much sausage to egg ratio. The chili was salty sweet and had a kick. We also had the chicken and waffles with the Mac and cheese. The waffles were crisp and soft the chicken was moist and well seasoned. We have dined at The Merchant House many times. We have always had a great dining experience. Until recently. As their prices increase, the food quality is going downhill fast. On our last visit this week, I ordered the Fresh 5 Cheese Bacon Mac with BBQ Pork. There was absolutely NO BACON. The BBQ pork blob? was mushy and very unappetizing. Nowhere near the quality of food we've had on previous visits. Higher prices, smaller portions, meh food. I'll probably avoid this place for a while as there are plenty of other mediocre dining options in Greenville that are cheaper. read more

We have dined at Merchant House many times since they opened, and have never had a poor meal or service...until tonight. To be fair, they were obviously understaffed and busy, so I can give the service a little break. But the food was not up to the usual standard at all on this visit. Our food took almost 45 minutes to arrive. Since our last visit, they have changed the chicken & waffles, and the change is not good. Instead of a nice piece of chicken breast, it is now two small strips with noticeably smaller waffles and a lot less Mac & cheese. Not to mention my waffles were burned almost black on the edges and one piece of the chicken was also burned. The Philly dip was also somewhat burned, and the bun very hard. Also had to ask the server for the Au Jus (it came out of the kitchen without it) and it took her over 5 minutes to bring it out. MH is usually very good, but this visit really bothers me because our meals were not only poor, but the portions so small. With 2 drinks the dinners the bill was over $60 (with small tip). Our table had seafood dip and spinach dip for appetizers. We had Street Tacos, Cowboy Mac and a Monte Cristo sandwich with garlic parm fries. Ashley was the best waitress! Very attentive and made sure everything was perfect! The restaurant is a very neat and clean place to stop in for food and drinks! So if you come to Greenville, Ohio pay this place a visit! When we moved to Greenville two years ago we loved The Merchant House. Food was fresh, delicious, beautifully plated, even when they were extremely busy at times. Things have changed, things have been changing. Food became cheaper quality and just meh. Tonight we went out for dinner. The brisket patty did not disappoint and the soup was excellent. I had the fish n chips made of cod, fries, apple coleslaw, and onion soup. I will say, the soup was to die for. However, the cod coating was somewhat bland but the cod itself was great. The apple coleslaw wasn't to my taste, but I'm not going to say it was bad. We came on a Saturday night. Didn't seem too busy only a couple and a group of 6 ahead of us. Was told it would be 40min wait, ok not too bad. Well that should have been our first indication! After 1hr and 25 min we finally got seated at a table!!! Our waiter was awesome!!! He was on it every step of the way. We order poutine and the pretzel appetizers. First off pretzel was fabulous!!! Now the poutine was just ok. We are used to the traditional poutine in Canada, just our opinion!! Someone order the prime rib chili, they said there was no real chili taste to it. He was upset that who ever made it got quite a few pieces of bone fragments in it. Said that was appealing to him. Our entrees were prime rib, fish and chips and burger. The burger was great cooked the right way didn't care for bread and butter pickles on it, but I just removed them. The prime rib was great, had it finished on the grill. Not used to such a thin cut of meat but tasted great. The fish and chips was a let down for me. More mushy breading on the inside than fish! Substituted waffle fries for the Parmesan fries...so so. I could have used more garlic. Did try the ranch dressing. Seemed to me to be a homemade buttermilk dressing. Was on the sour side and very watery. Not a fan at all. Desserts they were out of so no review there!!! So for everything that we experienced it was not worth the hour and a half wait to try this restaurant. We visited here for the first time this last Friday. It was truly a great dining experience. Food was excellent and service was great. We had the huge pretzel as an appetizer and it was very good. Awesome place on the outskirts of Dayton in a cute county town. They hAve a full stocked bar on one side and restaurant seating on the other side. Let's start with the menus..authentic look putting them on a clip board (the paper easily slips out so you need to keep track of what order). They make their own lemonade and it was amazing. The kids loved it. For kids craft, instead of a paper with puzzles and Icons to color in they provide a small chalk board and bag of chalk. Great idea and kids love it. I will caution you...if can get messy if your kids like the draw on tables or their plastic cups but it wipes right off. They have a handful of appetizers. I immediately saw the calamari and was hesitant at first but the waitress said it was amazing. We ordered banana pepper calamari and the Parmesan fries as the pizza takes 45 minutes to cook. The calamari was the BEST I've ever had. It didn't taste a lot like banana pepper unless you actually put one in your mouth. It was perfectly crisped and it came with delicious aeoli sauce. Definitely the calamari I've ever had. The fries were great too, the kids gobbled them up. This place is definitely known for their Chicago-like deep dish pizza. What I enjoyed most was it wasn't stuffed with ridiculous amounts of cheese like real Chicago deep dish but a lot of it was dough. They coat the bottom of crush with a cheese like topping. The dough is crispy. The large of 8 pieces will easily feed 8 people and probably have some to take home. You end up cutting the slices in half. You fill up quick with the thick crust. We ordered a pepperoni large and a large Philly cheesesteak. The Philly cheesesteak is made with Alfredo sauce and wow it's absolutely amazing. You saw an array of orders at each table. Many locals said everything on the menu is good. They also have an array of sandwiches. Stopped in for a late dinner. We started with the southern rolls for an appetizer. Excellent. Moved on to the French onion soup, outstanding. Then the cup of barley soup was superb home cooked from scratch stewed all day wished it had been a bowl. Wife got the fish and chips came with parm fries, cole slaw, and tarter sauce. Fish was good but there batter is bland. Parm fries, good. Cole slaw different. Tarter sauce made with dill could pass on. I had the southern pattie melt with parm fries good. The pattie melt was a 1/2 lb super thick hunk of meat that was excellent, the cheese and onions on the sour dough was superb. Wife and I took a day trip to Greenville and after visiting several shops we looked for a place to eat on Yelp and found this place with great reviews. We were not disappointed! Old brick walls created a very nice atmosphere. I ordered a brisket/beef hamburger with a side of Brussels sprouts (covered in bacon, sauce and cheese) and my wife had a chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries, everything was very good. If I exclude larger cities like Dayton or Indy, this place is at the top. Would definitely recommend..and based on the fact that the place was packed at 5:30 on a Saturday, it seems like others might agree. We had reservations and it took a little extra time to be seated...overheard a walk-in being told the wait was 45 minutes...so I'd recommend reservations if it's a weekend for sure. The food was what I expected- the NY strip was grilled to the right level of "done". The side salads are basic, AND you aren't given a bowl of fiber filled white, iceberg lettuce leftovers. The Chicago dip appetizer was really good...and maybe a little too much for 2 people...not a complaint though! My wife had street tacos and really liked them. Only one real complaint- the bacon Mac and Cheese is good, but there wasn't a lot of flavor...although it's very creamy and the pasta was cooked perfectly. Here's what I've grown to appreciate: Good Service. Our Waitress was nearly perfectly timed on bringing the salads, the entrees and the drink refills. And I don't know how she did it so well as we were seated upstairs and out of view. There's something to be said for not having a salad dropped in front of you 5 minutes after the appetizer arrives and also not having the entree tossed in front of you 5 minutes after a salad arrives.
