Such an amazing beer garden in DC!! Even on a sweltering hot summer day, the cold beer + ample shade in the (very large) outdoor area keeps me enjoying the outdoors. Even on a busy day, there are plenty of tables to choose from. They also have a well ventilated indoor area. In terms of menu variety, the kitchen serves up a good mix of high-quality bar food along with a few unexpected additions such as the Ribeye Gyro which was honestly phenomenal. Drink-wise, there is a large selection of beers to choose from as well as a few non-beer options such as cider. The bar is also well-equipped for some cocktails. Overall, I'd be here all the time if it were more conveniently located. The staff are all very welcoming / friendly and it's a great space to hang with friends, have some drinks, enjoy (unexpectedly amazing) food, and play some games. read more

We went here on a beautiful Saturday evening for one of the Final Four games and it was the perfect place to watch the game while sitting in the outside area. My expectations for the food at a place like this are usually pretty low, but what we had here was very good! You can rarely go wrong with a big soft pretzel, and the one here was very good. We also had the chicken nachos. I'm generally not a big nachos fan, but these were better than most because it didn't have the thick caked on down cheese like a lot of places do. Some friends and I tried to go to Midland's and were turned away by a very rude bouncer. My friend, who is 24, has a valid ID and was turned away. The bouncer said "I can't tell you what is wrong with your ID until you provide me with a second form of ID." As someone who checks IDs for a living, THIS IS NOT HOW THIS WORKS! What a change here. I visited this place a few months ago. Recently, I returned with my family and was struck by how much it has changed. Maybe it's because we sat inside vs being further away from the surly staff. Upon entry, the ID checker immediately told us our kids needed to be within 5 feet or we'd be kicked out. I was so thrown off by his completely negative reaction and we just walked in the door. It continued from there when my daughter spilled water and started to wipe up the floor and a staffer came over and berated her for using the napkins. Umm, tell us and don't yell at our kids. We're definitely not coming back with our kids and recommend parents think twice or at least until management addresses these major issues. As I went to pay, the cashier annoyed with another customer dramatically rolled her eyes and was complaining. I asked how her day was going, trying to get a smile and cheer her up. She just ignored me and asked if I was ready to close out. All so rude. Food is standard pub and beers are what you get. It's a shame. I liked this spot on my previous visit. I've been to Midlands twice. First off, props for being a Michigan alum bar - Go Blue! Love the patio and chill vibe - great spot to relax while hanging out and sampling beers, etc. Solid beer selection, per my husband. Today I ordered the Strainge Beast hard kombucha which was awesome. Ginger, lemon, hibiscus. Loved it! We also needed a light midday snack so my husband got the $3 happy hour brat and I ordered hummus/pita. The hummus tasted great and was the perfect consistency. I'd love some veggies in addition to the pita bread, though. The service has been welcoming both times I've come. All in all, Midlands is a terrific neighborhood hangout spot and I'm sure to be back when visiting the area. read more

Always a great time at Midlands with friends. Solid neighborhood bar and great for groups. They have enough space inside and outdoor seating available for a happy hour hang or weekend meet up. I've been here at different times of the year and they're always ready to accommodate folks regardless of weather. Today was rainy and they had the outdoor seating covered for use in addition to indoor seating. During the cold months they have heaters available outside. It's a great place to hang year round! Though it does get crowded as it gets warmer, so a reservation is recommended. They have an excellent selection of beers, ciders, cocktails, and more! There's something for everyone from IPAs to Pilsners and Sours. I love that they offer real food in addition to their yummy Buffalo Chicken nachos, they also have sandwiches like the Chicken Banh Mi. Surprisingly good food and plenty of seating, both indoors and outdoors. We ordered a half tray of the beef chili nachos and could've easily gotten full from just the nachos -- they are loaded! I got the ribeye gyro, which came with real, thinly sliced ribeye and a lightly toasted gyro that was both soft and pleasantly crispy, a nice touch I wasn't expecting that elevated the sandwich. I would order both again. There are TV screens in both the outdoor and indoor seating areas. Outdoors, there is a giant jug of sunscreen and some bug spray, which I suppose we could've used because my husband got a mosquito bite while we were eating lunch outside. Amazing spot with a great venue for watching live sports. Beer is exceptional. However, the customer service was some of the worst I've seen in a long time. I never write yelp reviews but felt the need to be a Karen on this one. My friend ordered a drink and when he went to sign the bill and add tip, the server (who was running around yelling nonsense the entire game) proceeded to enter the tip information herself. Not sure if this is common practice at Midlands but this was pretty mind boggling to witness. I ordered a nitro cold brew and noticed that the cup was almost over flowing with ice. Since I've never been served a nitro with ice in it, I politely asked for the server to remove a majority of it. The server responded by throwing her hands in the air, throwing the ice scoop in the ice maker, and cursed at me under her breath. When I went back to get another coffee I asked for no ice this time around and the same server's response was "ok you're getting a kids cup then". Not sure who these people think they are but we will never come back here again. read more

I've been coming here since they first opened, and somehow forgot to ever write a review. It's always been a great neighborhood place and has only gotten better over the years. They're known for their awesome craft beer selection, but have good cocktails and wine (and non-alcoholic drinks too). Their food menu is very good, includes some vegetarian and gluten free options, however they still let you bring in any outside food you want. It's a place that you can visit with a big group, or alone and grab a seat at the bar, people bring babies, kids, dogs, etc., and it's just a nice casual atmosphere. It's also great for watching sports, and I've been here to watch World Cup soccer over the years, DC sports (was an awesome place to be when the Nats were in the 2019 World Series), and regular college football Saturdays. Since they added covers over much of the patio area, it's also a great place to visit in any weather. read more

Came here around 6:30 on a monday and the tables by the fire pits and heaters were already taken, so come early to snag those! You order food and drinks at the bar and can sit wherever. Most were sitting in the outdoor area but there's plenty of tables around the bar in the covered area as well (and a fun mural). They've got hand sanitizer on every table which is convenient. The staff is pretty good about coming by to clear empty glasses, but someone grabbed my glass so fast before I could say anything and I still had a little left that I wanted to finish. Would've appreciated if they asked if I was finished Wanted something a little fruity and the peach cider was pretty nice. Friend had the peach ale, which we both found to be too sweet. The menu had some pretty interesting sounding beers, so I'd come back to try more. Seems like a fun place to watch sports games too, and its dog friendly! I was really excited about coming to this place: After my visit, I felt indifferent. Visited on a Friday night during the COVID-19 pandemic: They're taking their precautions seriously! Their website lists all of their precautions. When you arrive, there is an ID scan and contact information taken at the entrance so they can contact you in case they are made aware of an employee or guest who becomes ill on the day you visit. You are reminded verbally about the rules, including not getting up from your table unless you're going to the restroom and all parties' face masks must be on before an employee approaches your table to take your order, deliver your food, or clear away glasses and plates. Tables are socially distanced. Luckily, it's a large covered outdoor space and an indoor space with garage doors that open, so even when you're "inside", you feel like you're outside. However, everything on the menu was...meh. I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Hoagie. The chicken is shredded (was not expecting that) and I felt there was more toppings on the hoagie than chicken. In fact, I had to open the sandwich to make sure there was chicken in it. For $12, I'd expect to get chips AND a pickle, not be forced to choose one or the other. The Oberon Ale beer was...okay. Honestly, you could've given me a Blue Moon or Shock Top and I would've been equally satisfied. LOL Not to mention our server was hard to find. I felt I was constantly searching for him to ask for water refills (it was nighttime, but it was humid!), place our orders, ask for the check. However, the service of receiving drinks and food after they were placed was extremely quick. I did not come in with any particular expectations but I was pleasantly surprised with this place. Midlands has great options for what is on tap and lots of variety. They have really unique drafts too like hard kombucha. There are 3 different sizes that you can order your draft beers. The biggest option comes in a stein (25oz)! I got one of their sours and it was the best sour I have ever had! It was called Abstract Vision: Passionfruit Orange Guava. It is from a local brewery in Sterling VA so I am definitely going to have to check out that brewery next! The bartenders here were so knowledgeable, I was shocked. Some of the names of the beers are very complicated and they were able to pronounce them all no problem. My husband just ordered by the beers number on the board and they knew just from the number which beers he was referring to. They can even tell you a bit of backstory about the beers if you are curious. There is both indoor and outdoor seating, about an equal amount of both. We chose to sit outside since it was a nice night. I love Midlands! I've come a few times before, but I wanted to check out their Oktoberfest specials on this visit. Midlands has a great menu with a variety of beer options which they rotate in and out, for a pretty fair price. They also have a good food menu - I've had the Banh Mi Rice Bowl before, which was pretty tasty, and for Oktoberfest I tried the giant soft pretzel. The pretzel came with two dips, but the cheese was by far the better of the two. The service is very quick, as you just order at the counter and they pour while you pay. There's a good amount of seating, although it's often busy so you may have to share a picnic table with another group. They also have TVs throughout, so great for sports watching! read more

Midlands is an anchor of the Park View neighborhood and really somewhere I should have tried years ago. It's great for beer, bar bites, sports (they have Michigan watch parties), games (they have darts! and board games in the corner), and best of all, that sweet sweet patio. Even in winter months it's a great spot because of the huge, colorful indoors. One wall has a wild mural with PBR-drinking bees, witches, a flying squirrel or two, even spacemen. After a few beers, you'll be marveling at its beauty. Speaking of beer, the list consists of 21 drafts plus tons of bottles. I love that they put a special focus on local beers, including one I've barely seen anywhere else - Hellbender's pomeranian bowling league stout. I loved enjoying it with our food. The local drafts are half off during happy hour Monday-Thursday. And for you water drinkers, they have a jug out to keep you hydrated. The food is solid, too. You order from a window in back, where they make a decent number of traditional bar bites and sandwiches. We never pass up a giant soft pretzel, so we tried that, and it's great. It's rubbed in some kind of butter, which makes it much richer than typical, and it really is as soft as a dream. Cheese and mustard on the side, too. Even better, the buffalo chicken nachos are enormous. If you've ever been disappointed by nachos coming barely covered by toppings, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the huge portion of juicy chicken and salsa they've put on here. We couldn't even finish it. Kitchen is open till 10. This is such a great spot, we'll be back. read more

Short story: this place is so "popular" that the staff doesn't care about your patronage. I'd recommend to Hook Hall across the street instead. Long story: Today (Saturday, January 9th) I tried making a reservation for 2 on Midlands' preferred platform, Resy. I knew they would be busy because it's a sunny day, and they're one of the few spots in Petworth with outdoor seating. On the Midlands' website for reservations, Resy showed a few times available between 6 and 8pm. I tried making reserving one of those spots, but for every time showed as "available" an error message would pop up saying that "this time is no longer available". Yet, when I returned to the site to check the other open times, they still gave the same message. SO we decided to stop by in person, and see if we could make the reservation in person or at least get put on the waitlist. We wait our turn for the hostess, and when we ask about the waitlist, she says they're busy until 6pm. She told us she couldn't put us on the waitlist. We said "ok, so can we make a reservation for later instead?" She told us that we would have to go on the Resy site, so we told her AND SHOWED her that the site wasn't working. She told us that it's not her problem, that it's a problem with Resy, and that she "can't do anything about it." We asked if she could book us in from her end manually: "no", so we asked if she could put our name on the waitlist for after 6pm "no, because the system isn't working." When we asked to speak with Midlands management, she declined and said they would tell us the exact same thing. We said: "ok, so what do we need to do to get put on the waitlist or get a reservation?" This hostess made it sound like it was impossible. She told us that we will have to come back at 6pm and try our luck then. She also said to keep trying the Resy system (even though we showed her it's not working), and that again - not their problem. I was shocked, because I've never had bad service here. I used to love coming here. Why didn't management figure out a new way to book people when their primary system isn't working? Seems like Midlands is indifferent to whether or not you patronize them. read more

Can't say enough great things about this place! Great drink menu, food is really good, and staff is super friendly. I went a lot before covid and went recently before things opened back up. They followed protocols really well and safety was their main concern. This is a Michigan bar but no matter the sport, all the big TVs (inside and outside) will have you covered. One of my favorite bars in DC because the vibe is great (not pretentious), seating is great both indoor and outdoor, and it's one of those places that feels like home, especially if you're from the Midwest. Next the good - they have a good beer menu and I even found some cider which made me happy! The service was pretty good too! Friendly and polite and helpful. But we went for dinner and the food was - just ok. The only kid food option really was a hotdog. The two other meals we got (ribeye sandwich and rice bowl) were SOOOOOO spicy. The rice bowl was spice on spice with no where to turn as the veggies were spicy and the sauces were too. The sandwich meat was smoked and yummy but again included spicy toppings. This place made me want a hamburger and left me wishing it was on their menu. With all this said, the pretzel was a highlight and the prices were quite reasonable. read more

I've heard a lot about Midlands over the years here and finally had the chance to check it out. Nice cozy beer garden with a no frills dive-bar type feel. Would definitely come back. There is plenty of outdoor seating but make sure to reserve a space. There are a lot of tables with fire pits and a few tables with propone heaters. Warning: not all tables have heaters!! Be sure to dress warm and maybe even bring I blanket (I did). The drinks are really good. They have a great selection of beers and you can even do a flight. Unfortunately you can't pick your own beer choices for flights and instead they'll do a German or Belgian flight but it's nice they have the option. The Belgian Peach Ale and the Pineapple Chilli were great beer choices for me. They also have a ton of cocktails and hot drinks. The hot chocolate which is spiked with peanut butter whiskey is a nice treat. The food includes mostly pub food but there are generally not a lot of options. If you happen to be here during brunch their breakfast sandwich is really delicious. Egg, cheese, and chipotle aioli on French bread that they grill with your choice of meat. I choose bratwurst and the sandwich was amazing. The only complaint is that there was so little egg on the sandwich it was much more like a grilled cheese with sausage than a breakfast sandwich but it really hit the spot and was a nice homey meal on a cold day. Service here overall is pretty good and pretty fast and staff are friendly. Come for the drinks and chill vibe, maybe go somewhere else for food. read more
