Honestly one of the best sports bars I've been to in DC. Spent football Sunday with my girls at the Blaguard and we had a blast! The window was open and we sat in the booth and it was just gorgeous all around. Although I'm a saints fan, I had to cheer on the commanders this particular day. Note for the Blaguarita: try at your own risk!! It has tequila and cognac and you definitely only need one. I will say the food is basic bar food, nothing special but good! This place is my favorite bar in Dc. Perfectly chilled, lowkey but lively and the drinks are reliably awesome. The bartenders are cool, the bouncer is cool, the atmosphere is cool, and the food is sicko. The happy hours are also insanely well priced in a way that reminds me of 2015 Memphis bars. Good food. Good prices. Good (?) service. Have eaten there three times within a week during happy hour. I wanted it to be my new go to spot. I accessed the menu online. Following the second visit, I noticed that I was overcharged on two food items based on the online menu which was a PDF. When I brought the $2 overcharge to their attention during my third (and likely final) visit, I was told that they are aware of the discrepancy, but the physical menu is correct so they weren't willing to honor the PDF. Very disappointing!! Not customer service oriented. Fix the PDF or honor the PDF. read more

OMG so great. We were looking for a bar to watch the Stanley Cup playoffs and this place was a short uber away from Dupont Circle. We definitely hit the jackpot. Small, local bar with great wings and sports. They also had great music. Beer on draft, cocktails available as well. In addition to the wings, I had cheese curds, which were super fresh and delicious and the hubs got tots. I started with a nitro draft coffee. I love coffee on nitro and we were there around noonish. There is an upstairs but we didn't go up there as it was closed when we went in the afternoon. There's also a little bit of outside seating. I would definitely recommend this place! read more

If you come here, it is for the happy hour specials and their soft pretzels which are the bomb! They were lightly salted and pillowy soft, unlike other places that are rock hard. The service was not great. We shower up and asked to sit outside with our dog and sat in a "table" that was really this small firepit. It was dirty and had to ask TWICE to get it cleaned, and the bouncer did a terrible job trying to clean it. You have to order inside the bar and we did get our food in about 10 minutes. Aside from the pretzel, the rest of the food was really average but the wings were solid. They have about 10 craft beers on tap which is not common in DC. Based on their menu, it seems like a local divey kind of bar. Although the staff were really nice and prompt, I wasn't happy with that fake table and the miscommunication with the bouncer. read more

I hate to say this but these were the worst wings I've ever tasted. Being from Buffalo I was weaned on wings, I have never sent wings to the trash in my existence, but today was the day. That's not an overstatement, I have never sent back wings in my 36 years of existence. They were definitely precooked for speed, so hard and chewy, and fell off the bone in a bad way, like rocks being chipped off a cliff face. I didn't even know that could happen, it was a strange experience. That said the vibes inside were great and the staff were very friendly, light hearted, and accommodating. Little hole in the wall Irish pub. We came in to get a bite and a beer. They had a pretty decent selection of local craft beer on tap. I was expecting much out of the food but it blew me away. The tacos were on special (on Tuesday 3 for $6). The tortillas seemed homemade and the chipotle sauce was delicious. The chili had to have been one of the best chilis I've ever had. It was not soupy, very chunky. I had to take some of jalapeños off but the flavor was not something I expected to come out of an Irish pub. The overall vibe made me feel like I was in a neighborhood bar in Good Will Hunting or something. The bartender was loud and friendly but not in a bad way. We stumbled onto the Blaguard while waiting to check into our Airbnb during our visit to Washington, DC last weekend. I was so intrigued with the name, I had to go in. For the remainder of our DC trip, we tried to insert the name "Blaguard" in every sentence we could. Located in the beautiful neighborhood of Adams Morgan, this bar was a pleasant surprise. We had just eaten lunch and had a little time to kill, so we grabbed a couple of beers. I tried the Guava-Beary Gose (4.7%) from the local Hellbender Brewery, and it was delicious. Steven was tending bar that afternoon and was very friendly. We loved this bar so much that we went back to visit one last time before we flew out the next morning. I really like this Adams Morgan neighborhood. I mean, I don't see me ever living here but I think it's a cool place. So here I am, walking along and suddenly I got very thirsty. And there's the Blaguard and it looks more of a dive bar than a sports bar, but there's nothing wrong with that designation. I popped in. A few friendly barflies were in attendance at 5:00 in the afternoon and they were getting very tipsy. Yep, they even bought be a drink. Hell, they insisted on it! Wholeheartedly meh food. We were craving carbs and heavy bar food so we got a pretzel (actually two- it's a good amount of food for the price), but it was undersalted, kind of hard, and stale tasting. Also ordered some pickle chips which were overbreaded and underseasoned. For main dishes, we shared a burger (solid, nothing special, but a good hearty burger) and the loaded tater tots with cheese, bacon, green onions, etc. I think the tots might have been better if we were dining in- we put the ranch on the side and so they were a bit dry, but I really think it's a hearty amount of gooey cheese that makes loaded tots and these were mostly lightly melted cheddar that had solidified. A good amount of bacon on them though, so that's something! All in all, the Blaguard is clearly a place you go for alcohol and food is more of an afterthought. Nothing is offensive and portions are generous, but even for bar food, it's kind of disappointing. read more

Thankful for bars like this and wouldn't necessarily call Blaguard a "dive" either. Oh, there are dives in the area while here is more of a sports bar. Most importantly, the Blaguard has been a mainstay for patrons prior to this past year, DURING ya know and well, now. If you haven't been, I encourage you to stop by. Spacious yet comfortable, the Blaguard has plenty of stand/stool style tables with perfect views of all their TVs. The main bar is loaded with seating and dare you to counter the Cheers' like vibe provided courtesy of their bartenders/staff. Drinks are reasonably priced and have a solid variety to choose from. I didn't capture a menu pic nor did I of the reuben I smashed on a recent bar crawl. Make sure to order the Totchos (IYKYK) and a side of wings (Memphis rub) if you're stopping in for the first time. I've been to the Blaguard twice now, both on Friday evenings for happy hour after work. Overall, the bar has a nice 'dive bar' feel -- old hard wood tables, hard wood stools, and complimentary bar decor. They have a large chalkboard menu written above the bar displaying the days' happy hour specials. No need to wait for the bartender or track down a menu to learn about the days' deals. Their happy hour specials last until 8pm, what a win! Their happy hour food and drink is extremely affordable and delicious. Their strong rails were just $5. The wings are $.50 each and come in orders of 6, 12, and 24. I highly recommend coming with a small group of friends and ordering the 24 wings; they have a number of dope flavors(I personally recommend the tomato basil). I ranked the Blaguard 4 stars instead of 5 because of it's location and size: 1. On both Fridays, parking was a nightmare; it took me at least 15 - 20 minutes to find a spot relatively close to the bar. Make sure to leave early if you plan on driving and meeting friends there. 2. Blaguard only has one or two tables large enough (downstairs at least) to fit a party greater than 4. On my second visit, I went with a party of 6 and had to do a bit of waiting to get the large table. I definitely recommend coming by with a smaller group. All things considered, a great bar! Before moving to DC, when we were scouting apartments, The Blaguard was one of the places we stopped at to grab a beer and ponder our choices, so I have a soft spot for it. On that Saturday, the place was nearly empty, we sat at the bar and had a friendly chat with the bartender. Today, a Sunday during football season, the small joint was pretty packed but we did manage to grab a table and two seats. Football played on the televisions. There was a young crowd. Not rowdy but loud. Gotta love millennials. Mimosas were $4 so not surprisingly the champagne used was cheap. We ordered a hummus platter which was really good. Hummus is notated on the menu as homemade and it tasted it. Pita was hot as if straight out of the oven. $8 for the large platter. In fact, I only saw one menu item for more than $10 and that had seafood. Simple bar food but quality and at low prices. The interior is small but warm and charming. Worn wooden floors and the place looked clean. There is an upstairs section as well with a second bar and more seating. Overall a nice little neighborhood bar. read more

The gf and I were early for the Speed Rack bartending competition at Jack Rose, so we decided to grab some food and a beer at Blaguard while we waited. The Blaguard has a definite dive-ish feel which is not a bad thing. The downstairs was pretty full of football fans watching the afternoon games, so we moved upstairs into their newly-renovated upstairs bar. Sparsely furnished/decorated and still requiring some of its planned finishing touches, the upstairs bar was bright (from the natural light streaming in the windows overlooking 18th St.) and offered a lot of potential goodness. The beer selection, while not the most extensive, had a range of popular favorites as well as microbrews. We ordered the Fish and Chips and Hot Pretzels with dip. The pretzels seemed to be the variety found in your supermarket freezer section. Not very inspiring. The fish and chips, however, were pretty good. The plate consisted with two very sizable pieces of battered fish (not sure of the type). The batter was a thicker style coating more accustomed to that found on fried chicken, but it was crispy a not greasy. The fish was hot, moist, and flaky. The fries were also nicely done, hot, crispy, but not greasy. The Blaguard isn't fine dining, nor is it upscale bar food. It's simple, unspectacular, yet certainly not bad bar food which is all you need in your neighborhood dive bar. read more

This was the first year I didn't have a Super Bowl party to be at so my girlfriend and I decided to go to the bar where she watched football every Sunday. We were skeptical of how many people would be at the Blaguard considering all the parties and social events we weren't invited to, the Blaguard was pretty full. We had some trouble finding a stool at the start but it definitely thinned out by the end. They had the game on most of the TVs and the puppy bowl got some real estate if you wanted to see something cute after seeing Bill Belichek's scowl for 4 hours. On top of the beer experience, I will say that for the amount of Swag I received during the Super Bowl, the Blaguard is worth a visit. From bottle openers, t-shirts and can coozies, I never expected to get this much beer swag during one football game. We drank Bud Light for most of the game, but there were quite a few different options so if drinking "America's finest" isn't you thing, they have a lot of other options. The bar service was a bit slow but considering how full the bar was, I can't complain too much. Nicos, one of the off the clock bartenders, is just a lot of fun I he was the one going through the bar and bantering with everyone. It was really cool to see someone who isn't working care so much about making the bar environment enjoyable. For food, we cycled through a lot of different bar snacks. We started with the Buffalo Totchoes. They were really good. I wish they had nacho cheese which would have been appropriate considering the name, but I got over it given the spiciness of the tots soaked in buffalo sauce and jalapeños. We wanted some ranch and the server got us some really quickly. We then got the Mac n Cheese which was amazing. I had a few Mac n Cheeses during my week in DC as a mac aficionado, and this was by far the best. Finally, we got the black bean burger which wasn't just a bland attempt at appeasing vegetarians but a well constructed burger with avocados, nacho cheese and onions. We got the fries near the end of the game and they were cold, so I am going to guess they were old. However, the rest of the night was great and I will dock them 0.1 stars. I have heard this place is totally different on Fridays and Saturdays, but for a football game this place is second to none. It's a bit like one of those magical shops that appear one day on a blank wall in children's stories, selling precious things of enchantment and wonder. Seriously, it doesn't seem that anyone I know has ever heard of this bar or noticed it--almost like your eyes slide off it. We were looking for a place to watch some football game last night, and were standing on the corner, right outside the bar, getting ready to cross the street when I turned around and there it was, eldritch light blazing across its bloody facade, windows winking open to the world--The Blaguard: "A Spirited Chipper." Four large screens, ample seating, and the spookiest clientele I've ever come across. Everybody turned around to look at us when we entered, and a big black man hollered his greeting and asked us what he could get us, smiling broadly. He, apparently, did not work there but he knew all the songs and all the regulars--all of whom looked completely at home--cheerily bopping his head to the loud tunes issuing from the ceiling, which I refer to as "acceptable white people music" such as U2's eighties catalogue ("Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "With or Without You") with a smattering of James Brown dropped in there for interest. A big ol' tumbler of vodka tonic, emphasis on the vodka, set me back $4 and was served to us by a more-than-a-little-drunk but wonderfully genial bartender. It was a pleasure to sit there, in a clean, chill, friendly and ever-so-slightly otherworldly bar, perched on a very high wooden stool, buzzed from my inexpensive drink and feelin' fine. This is a cozy neighborhood bar that also serves as a great place to watch your home team when you're the new kid in town. As someone new to DC without a 'place where everyone knows my name', I instantly felt welcomed by the staff and patrons of the Blaguard. Almost every person I met that night invited me to sit with their crew for a beverage and when my team started losing, the bartender poured sympathy shots for Patriots fans and I. It is one of those bars where the owner introduces himself as he pours you a free drink on your first visit. It is one of those bars where it seems like they aren't really trying to be anything in particular and it just works. Somehow when sitting on an old wooden bar stool with people pushing past you you just feel comfortable here. 'WHAT CAN I GET YOU???" Bellowed the tall man in the corner, by the bar as we walked in, causing us all to jump, surprised. A couple friends ordered beers from him and thanked him. Then we realized he didn't work there. We stumbled upon The Blaguard last night and actually had a really good time. The beer is soooo cheap! Like, $2.50 for Buds (ew) and $4 for Pilsner (yes). The Sunday night special was 25 cent wings, which I passed on, but I do like the idea of 25 cent wings. Four plasma screens played the Patriots game (who lost!! Woooot!) and the LA Dodgers game, so I might come back here to watch sports, instead of in my laundry room. But the best features of this bar were, by far, a) the patronage and b) the jukebox. A) It's definitely a Cheers kinda place, where regulars come up and ask if you're having a good time and that the bartender there will take good care of you. They also welcome you as you enter, feigning employment, which is odd, but is really funny after it clicks to you. B) Wide selection of tunes from the jukebox. Don't come to this bar to dance. Come for the cultural learning experience you missed out on as a kid, like random 20-year-old U2 songs that I'd never heard of and Bill Withers tunes that I learned as a toddler that my friends hadn't heard before. ALSO, this must be the greatest jukebox ever, because you can play "Punch the Opponent" on the touchscreen--After selecting your chosen presidential candidate [Obama], you get to bop the opponent [McCain] on the head and make him explode, just like a virtual Whack-a-Mole.
