We were in there dining tonight cause the Pancake House was closed. All 3 of us had prime rib dinner and it was the WORST prime rib I have EVER had!!! All the bad reviews on here are from yuppy passer-throughs that don't know whats up. As an Idaho native I've been coming to The Mill for 20+ years now, a tradition passed down from my grandparents. Ive never had a bad experience. The food is solid and the atmosphere unmatchable. It is not a frilly Michelin star place, but thats what makes it real. This restaurant was recommended by three different people but was disappointing and overpriced. It's as if the people who are running the place think it's a top restaurant but are clueless about how to go about it. The salad was boring, slightly stale, iceberg lettuce straight from a bag. The vegetable beef soup was ok. The trout was overcooked. The steaks were ok (we do better at home with steaks from Costco). The ribs were a bit charred. We're not sure how you make a baked potato come out so tasteless, dry, and rubbery, and the corn was apparently from a can. The fries were overseasoned, but we suppose some people like them that way. (They forgot our daughter's fries, but quickly brought out a plate of fresh ones.) The bread pudding was hard and dry. The cheesecake at least was quite good. It would have been a tolerable meal at a cheap steakhouse, but for such high prices we expected something vastly better. 3 of our party of 4 had steaks, baked potatoes and salad and it was all great! Steaks were correctly cooked to each person's order. Our 4th person had fettuccine and the steak fingers app and he really liked them as well. The only reason I gave 4 stars is for the price it would have been nice to get a vegetable as well as with your meal. The meal came with choice of salad or soup and potato or vegetables. There was complementary bread that was yummy. The service was excellent and we were seated right away. The staff all had masks on and I would say the establishment was following all Covid guidelines. 15 dollar fries!!!!! So me and my girlfriend came into this bar starving. Was told they stop serving food so we asked what places were still open to eat, which they told us probably nothing. Our waitress told us that she could probably get us a basket of fries so we agreed. We also ordered 2 mojitos (which we couldn't taste any alcohol) and it was almost Mountain Dew color.... weird.... we split our check at the end and with 2 mojitos and a basket of fries was 16.50 EACH. The best prime rib in Idaho. This western restaurant isn't formal or fancy, but it has great meat. The prime rib is always seasoned perfectly with lots of flavor. The staff is friendly. Prices are a bit steep, but go ahead and spend a few extra bucks and get the large cut -- you'll be thankful you did. read more

This is our first time visiting McCall and we topped off our week with a prime rib dinner at the Mill. People have been pretty harsh with their reviews, but we enjoyed our dinner there . First of all the atmosphere was great . So much to look at. They even have a few old lift chairs from Brundage in the bar. Our salads were good. The prime rib was a very generous portion. The baked potatoes were a disappointment though - really hard. Not soft and fluffy. And imitation bacon bits?? Really, get in the kitchen and fry up some real bacon. But overall good. The atmosphere is pretty cool as the restaurant is divided up into separate rooms with various tables. We had made a reservation and the restaurant appeared to be busy outside, but inside it was mostly dead. We were sat in a nice table for 6 of us an there was a large 8-10 person family/party next to us enjoying their meal and having appropriate conversations at appropriate noise level. We settled in and ordered our meal. The menu is decent, offering a few steaks, salmon, halibut, and Idaho trout. They offered a vegetable side that sounded appealing (green beans, mushrooms, and onions) which if done properly would be a tasty mix. No, skip the veggies, they were swimming in butter and some cream sauce, blah. The salads, get the dressing on the side if you don't want it to be DRENCHED in dressing. The filet, halibut, ribeye, and salmon were all good as far as quality and preparation. While we were waiting for our salads, a party of 15 or so was sat next to us that were super obnoxious. It was difficult to have conversations at our own table as the noise from that party was so loud. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but hearing grown men and women poke fun at each other by calling one another gay over and over gets old really fast. In addition that that little gem, the service was almost non existent. Our beverages were never attended to, we had to walk our drink to the bar to get a refill, and the waitress checked to see if things were cooked okay when we were half way through the meal. McCall is small, and restaurant choices are limited. The meat portion of the meal is good no matter what you chose, but the sides and apps are disappointing. If you get stuck in a room with a bunch of drunks and slow service it really doesn't make it all worth it. read more

I'm giving The Mill four stars because from what I understand about McCall area restaurant standards -- my mom lives nearby -- it's about the best you're going to find for dinner. I'd probably give it three stars if it were located in a bigger city or if there were other/better places in the area. (It's a shame this great little mountain town does not have better eateries. If you're an aspiring restaurant chef/owner, you should consider moving here and opening a place. You'd probably do well.) On our first night in town, we ate at the bar "Beside" The Mill (that's what the sign says!) which is next door to the restaurant and allows smoking. (If you're anti-smoke, just go to the main restaurant. They have a bar area over there, too.) The "Beside" bar walls are adorned with all kinds of memorabilia and strange collectibles; it's worth a visit just to check it all out. (They also have a couple of pool tables and a pretty fun atmosphere for hanging out, so it would be a good place for a group to go for happy hour or an evening hang-out.) At the bartender's suggestion (Hi Danny!), we first tried the battered, deep-fried filet mignon tips. It may sound a little strange, but they were surprisingly good. I also ordered a meal, which was pretty good. (I wasn't crazy about the dressing on the caesar salad so if you're a caesar salad fan, go with something else.) The next night, we ate in the restaurant. I liked the atmosphere a lot; it is very "Idaho". The service was excellent (so the restaurant must have made some improvements, there, based on some of the bad reviews here). The waitress took our drink order right away and was quick with the service and refills throughout the meal. I ordered the 10-12 oz. prime rib. Although it wasn't the highest quality cut of meat on the planet, it was cooked as requested (medium rare) and actually exceeded my expectations in terms of tenderness and flavor. My dinner companion had the New York steak and said it was "decent." The bar area in the restaurant has an old-school stone circular fireplace in the middle of the room, which gives the room a really nice ambience. After dinner, we walked over and sat on one of the ski lift chairs (suspended from the ceiling) next to the fire for awhile, which was fun. read more

We have been coming to McCall, ID for the last five years for spring break. One of the things that brings us back is drinks by the fire in the bar area prior to dinner. We usually sit for an hour or more before even moving on to dinner The food is alway spot on. Some reviews complain of price but considering we're from Dallas we are always more than happy with the costs. We usually split a small prime rib and salad and have more than enough food. A bottle of wine between couples is always enjoyed. The bartender is more than happy to tell about all of the beer taps and odd ends hanging throughout the restaurant. It is not a five star dining room but is exactly what we desire. Quaint local feel with good food and ambience. Dinner can be completed with another round of drinks by the fire before leaving. I would recommend The Mill over any place in town for steaks and bar ambience. read more

Not a fan of the mill. I've had a few meals there and much like the other reviewers it's an over hyped overpriced old place. I think people just go there out of habit of because they have it in their heads that's the only place for Fine dinning in McCall. Nothing could be further from the truth. After reading reviews I was skeptical. Reservation for 10 people went smoothly. Server was very prompt on all beverage refills and food orders. I had the crab legs they were amazing and precut. So we spent Sunday and Monday in McCall. We read the reviews for both Steamers and The mill. Steamers had better reviews so we ate there last night. You can read the review posted last night. We decided to give The Mill a shot tonight. Well, the reviews are pretty much spot on. The steaks we had were very good but pricey. The salad was only marginal and the baked potatoe.....well, it's hard to mess up a potatoe. We had bread pudding for dessert and were both disappointed. Was hot and rubbery, like someone nuked the crap out of it. The end result was we spent over 100.00 dollars here at the Mill and only 81.00 at Steamers. Steamers got 5 stars and we will go back, but we will not be back here unless it's to get drunk and listen to the piano man they call Jamie but spell it like Jaime. ????? Absolutely loved the ambience of this place. The decor/artifacts are so interesting, there was always something to look at. There was a piano player at the bar providing music that was piped around the restaurant. We sat in an old ski lift hanging from the ceiling while we waited for our table to be set. So cool! The food was excellent. I had the prime rib from the "Lighter Fare" menu, and it was perfectly done. I guess by "lighter" they just meant it was smaller. They say it is a 6 - 8 oz prime rib. Mine was definitely more on the 8 oz end. Yeah! It came with soup or salad, so I ordered the soup because it's winter. The soup was clam chowder, and it was phenomenal. Everyone at the table loved the clam chowder. My kid got a cheeseburger with their thick cut fries, and those fries were the best fries I have ever had. Crispy and tasty. nom nom The wine was overpriced, but that's probably to be expected at a fine dining establishment. That's pretty typical anywhere you go. Service was prompt and friendly. Service is still amazing but food quality has gone way downhill. Came early on Saturday evening and they were completely out of prime rib. Had to settle for the ribeye. It was tough and overcooked. We also ordered finger steaks appetizer. The finger steaks were not even close to a golden brown they were white when we got them. I have never left a bad review on a business in all my life. Nor have I ever left zero tip but this lady brought out the worst in me I guess. The food was over priced and generally bad. Wings were burnt to a crisp with no seasoning or sauce. When asked for some hot sauce waitress got mad and brought it out with our main finally 15 mins later. It took that long or longer to get seated. There was about three other tables but everything took forever. I got the $19 French dip which was sandwich meat on a bun and somehow wasn't good at all. The Alfredo was around the same price and looked like it came out of a box and also tasted like nothing. When we finally got out of there the waitress was yelling at us as we walked out the door. When I went back in to explain why we left no tip she went full Karen and yelled at me some more. Hope the owners get this stuff cleared up because the building is amazing and very cool atmosphere. I know help is hard to find. I was so hungry after a long day that I considered eating butter I prayed went with some bread that didn't come until our main came. Should of just ate the butter and saved myself $50. The gas station on the way out of town had a pizza stick that blew this place out of the water and I didn't get yelled at by a crazy lady. read more

If a Zero was possible, this restaurant would get that. We called early on a Saturday and asked to make a reservation. They said they only had a reservation for 7:30pm. That was later than we wanted (yes, I know its short notice) so we asked if we could come at opening and wait to see if something opened up to which we were told "were always busy, you're not going to get a table" we decided to take the reservation anyways. Showed up for the reservation 30 mins early and told to sit wherever we'd like to, we did. We stat for 20 mins and not one person came by (and no, they weren't busy, literally just us at the table and MAYBE 5-6 other people at the bar) We got up and went to the bar where we were greeted by the bartender, leaving over the dishwasher, eyes half open and sluring her speech as if she was intoxicated of some sort. We were given menus and told someone would be out to take our order. That never happened, we left without food after over an hour of zero service. We are locals, but I sure hope that the tourists that this town survives on get better service than we did. 10/10 will NOT be back. read more

This could be a winner. But it's now way overpriced. Would you want to pay $30 for a prime rib or steak? The least expensive thing on the menu is the fish strips. For $12 bucks you get a boring salad with No Tomatoes! And four fish strips with nothing else on the plate! Are you kidding me?!! If I owned the place I would at least include some french fries and make sure it's way more than you can eat so you would want to come back! It has a wonderful atmosphere. It could be the best restaurant in McCall if they would just wake up to reality. The whole time I was there, there were never more than three tables of active customers. ("gee, we need to raise our prices to make more money because there are not enough customers"! haven't I said this is the problem before?!!) Went to The Mill in McCall for dinner a couple nights ago on a very hot evening. Yes it was cool and dark, but the menu is still same old thing - overpriced steaks and prime rib along with standard frozen seafood choices from 40 years ago. The prime rib was OK, but the shrimp in the shrimp cocktail and Caesar salad had no flavor at all and the ones in the salad had a flat shape, not at all attractive. There are so many better choices for good food at a much me reasonable price in McCall now. It would be really nice if The Mill hired a new chef and focused on bringing their quality and choices up to their prices. Out main server was friendly and efficient, but the rest of the staff needs much more training ie, asking if they can take plates away about 5 minutes after you have been served. read more

Two families and a total of 9 had dinner here late March. Almost didn't give The Mill a shot based on the reviews but went anyway and glad we did. Funky and cavernous the set up by itself could be reviewed...I liked it in an old institutional kind of vibe. Food was way better than expected most of had steaks or prime rib and all were pleased with portion, flavor and cooked as requested. If you are stuck up might want to pass. If you can roll with some funky, quirky and non polished attributes then give it a shot. Drinks are nice and strong too! read more

Terrible food, terrible service! If the service was actually decent I wouldn't be writing this review. We waited 45 minutes just to get our drinks and it wasn't even busy. Once we put in our order we waited another 45 minutes to get it. I had the prime rib sandwich and it was extremely dry the fries were worse than frozen fries you get at the grocery store. I was appalled that I had a bill of close to $90 for 3 of us to eat there. By far the worse money I've ever spent on horrible food and service. Don't go there! read more
