The dryer left black marks all over my clothes, which was incredibly frustrating. There was also a homeless man in there while I was doing laundry, and since I was alone it made me feel pretty uncomfortable and unsafe. Finally replaced the 80% of broken washers last summer but with a pretty big price hike, even though the washers badly needed replacing for awhile. Just recently went to do my laundry again and with absolutely NO notice, explanation, or repairing anything broken, the price to use the dryers has almost doubled. I live relatively close to the Missing Sock Laundromat. it's a cute name, quiet & safe location & an easy card payment system. The machines are nothing special & the percentage of non-working to working machines is lower than what I've typically seen in San Francisco. It really has everything to make this a loveable little laundromat. it's missing one thing - CUSTOMER SERVICE! There are 4 super large capacity washers. Two of them were broken (kinda usual at this place) & two were functional. Well I did the usual, paid my $18 & hit start. One of the 2 did not fill with water but ran the cycle. I had the luxury of doing laundry on a Sunday night without having to fold my laundry immediately... and wear pants lol Found this place on Yelp bc it was close to a coffee shop i like. I was stuck between this place and another laundromat off of Lombard. I noticed that there hasn't been many recent reviews which is a bummer because i'm new and need some honest recommendations. I came at around 10:30 on Tuesday. Parking was right out front which made my trip easy. No one was in the building when I arrived, but i did see some laundry going. My biggest thing is feeling safe, especially in a new/big place. I felt safe here and the people that did come in to quickly get their laundry seemed like normal, sane people lol. I'm interested to see how it is on the weekend once I start working FT. My only downside is paying so much for the washers. Again, i've always done laundry at home so I am not sure what's a typical price for a load. I didn't let this affect my 5 star rating. How to: If you've never been here, go to the back right and you'll see a loading station. This is great because you don't need to get coins to do laundry! I bought a laundry card for $5 and then had the option to load more money on it (i chose $20). You can check your balance at the same station or at each machine. Load your laundry in, add all that good cleaning stuff and close the door. Insert your card, press the type of wash you want, press start, pull out your card. The Missing Sock Laundromat on Chestnut Street in San Francisco has become, and is, an unmitigated disaster. Nearly forty percent of the spin wash machines are out of order - they just do not work. Some of those machines do not have out of order signs on them, so you put your money in only to then find out that the machine you put your money and detergent in does not work. You are left with money lost and no recourse. This happened to me on Monday, January 8, 2024 in the early morning, around 6:45. I lost $7.50 in the only large spin wash machine that worked out of the four large ones the laundromat has. Now, ALL FOUR of those large spin wash machines are out of order. To Connie and Gary at The Missing Sock on Chestnut Street: You and your company must do better than this. People are fed up. Most people are too fed up to complain--but I will complain about this because it is happening FAR TOO OFTEN. I will go to another laundromat. I am fed up of losing money in different machines and not being able to get my money back. Too many of the machines -- including at least four of the dryer machines -- do not work, are broken or are out of order. Some of these machines have not been fixed in weeks and weeks. Cool clean laundrymat open late (last wash 11pm?) the machines function properly and cost about what you'd expect for this neighborhood, theres chairs to kickback in, and some goofy funny-pages laundry humor on the walls. A couple times theres been some of the local Homeless just hanging out inside, mostly harmless but didn't feel comfortable leaving my clothes unsupervised. Showed up around 9:30 with a TON of laundry (I'm talking like 8-9 loads!) There was only one other customer there doing laundry so we had our pick of machines... No coin operated machines either, you load money onto a card that you insert into the machines, that really makes it so much quicker and smoother, no breaking bills into change or fussing with inserting quarters into every single machine. They also had an employee there cleaning- and boy did he do his job well. I watched him clean the top of every machine, swept/cleaned the floors + emptied all garbage cans- I even saw him wipe out the inside of some Machines. That place was spic and span. And because we had so much laundry we ended up being there a little late and the owner showed up and let us finish folding our clothes without rushing us. I had a long and hard day and last thing I wanted to do was laundry but within that hour of doing laundry I met the sweetest kindest woman working that evening Josie she talked and greeted every customer while attending to her job ,she was constantly tidying up. "The Missing Out of Order Sign" I was debating between calling this place the missing laundry attendant or the missing out of order sign. Both are valid. The first thing you'll notice when coming in is a homeless person. (Usually on the left corner near the one plugin). I've seen a variety of homeless people in here. Some sing karaoke. Some blast their music. But none of them do laundry. I'm not sure if I can entirely blame them though, since many of the machines don't even work. I've had fair luck with the washing machines, but the dryers usually require several restarts or machine hopping. Price wise it's $3.25 a load for a wash and $1.75 to dry. So $5 per load, which isn't bad. There are six settings for the washers and three for the dryers. Protip: Make sure your phone is fully charged beforehand. Management: Just get rid of the one charger in the corner. It attracts a steady supply of homeless people. Also pleaaaaaaase fix the machines read more

Gets the job done but always out of detergent or other laundry products. In their vending machines. If you arrive there without them, you're out of luck. Not the cleanest either. They should clean out the machines. A great location, so if those items could be resolved, ratings could go up significantly. I have used your laundrymat just this one time recently. I found that the laundrymat was kept neat & tidy when in this time of a pandemic. I was fasenated by the loadable card. Not many places have this service. I have been telling all of my clients about this due to the fact that there is a coin shortage. I will be back to use this laundrymat if I am in the neighborhood. You know, I am not impressed with ambient lighting and new fangled card operated machines. I would have liked to have done laundry without having to purchase a $10 card (when I really just needed to do ONE load). Pros: Industrial type of machines that can fit big loads. Great design and whimsical artwork. Cons: It always smells terribly of BO, most likely because of the homelessness crisis (street people sleep there often). It sometimes feels unsafe. read more

I've been going to this laundromat once per week for 3 years and it's been slowly going downhill the entire time. The number of broken machines is now about 50% of what they have, meaning that you are out of luck for finding machines during the middle of the day when some of the local house cleaners are doing multiple loads at once. What's worse is that some of the machines that look like they should work really don't - the water doesn't drain, the machine gets stuck on the same cycle without completing, the buttons don't work, etc. , so you have to re-wash the same clothes again, losing your money and your time. I've taken the time to list some of the machines as broken, as others have, so others don't have to suffer the wasted time and money I have. I've also tried calling or texting the phone number they give, but all without any results. I even bumped into the maintenance guy who only cleans and asked him for any assistance with getting the machines fixed, he just said he's been telling the owner's this for years and nothing gets done. What more troubling is that since the place is often empty due to the broken machines, there have been periodic homeless people sitting in the available chairs, with the smell of urine and cigarettes heavy throughout the entire place. I've seen the police there three times in the past year dealing with the homeless issue, and I only go once a week! This place was a good laundromat and most of the people in my building used to go there, now we all talk about how terrible it's become and I'm the last one using it. I see so many frustrated people there dealing with broken machines that hopefully some will comment on here so the owners finally take some action to improve things. read more

BLACK MOLD!!! Inside the barrels of all the machines is black mold. I'd you have any sort of allergies you will become allergic to your clean laundry after cleaning here. upping the star rating from my previous review as they finally replaced the dryers (or so it seems). that, and since washboard blues and laundré closed, we're left with this place as basically the nicest laundromat in the city now. is it perfect? no. could it be a bit cheaper? probably. but the owners seem genuine and were super responsive to my last review (that wasn't as nice as this one) - and i'm glad to have seen them give the place some upkeep since then. not a bad option. though i REALLY wish there were some power outlets somewhere that aren't on the ceiling, so i could actually plug in my macbook while hanging out. if they added those i could see this place upping itself to 5 stars from me now, but as it stands i'll give it 4. definitely a step up from the 2 i gave it before - glad they fixed the dryers. read more

So here's a tip: I'd steer clear of this place in the morning hours. Every time I've come here earlier than 9am there's always at least one homeless person hanging out or some meth head straight tweaking. They always look super sketch and always look like they're ready to steal my clothes out of the dryer unless I stay and keep an eye on them. Later in the day everyone seems normal here so I feel comfortable heading back to my apartment while my clothes go through the dryer cycle but definitely not so in the mornings. Other people have mentioned the card system. It's super easy once you get used to it and I like not having to mess around with quarters. It's $2.75 for a load in the washer but only $1.50 for 30 minutes in the dryer. And their dryers work great! I've never had anything come out of the dryer damp, even when I put a big load in it. All the machines are fairly new and always seem in good order. There's no one here on site during operating hours tho so by the end of the day the place can get kind of messy. Usually my girlfriend washes my laundry - she is a lovely woman. But today and probably in the future I will have to wash my own laundry for various reasons. Well I came down the street to the Missing Sock and it is all of the below 1. Clean 2. A bit pricey 3. large 4. Quiet enough to read a book without interruption 5. Free WiFi 6. The only downfall is the $3 charge for your card (which you use to pay for your laundry services every new load) which is really not a huge downfall - it is what it is. Unfriendly laundromat cleaner staff review: I usually do my laundry at missing sock since a few months ago. Then I went to missing socks on 06/16/2021 wednesday night around 10pm to do 5 loads of laundry. I reasonably put my empty plastic bags of my laundry to throw away right next to the small trash can bin so i do not fill up the small trash can with empty plastic bags. At around 11:30pm the cleaner male walked in and then saw the plastic bags (reasonably piled and not all over the place) next to small trash can he asked are those plastic bags from me, i said yes, then he immediately suddenly yelled at me to take those plastic bags (costco white 13 gallon kitchen trash bags the bags are still white even after my laundry was in there) and dump it at the street trash cans outside on chestnut street 10 buildings down 1 block away. I thought he had a bad day so i stayed silent and then took those bags and decided to put it all in the trash bin in the laundromat. Then after I put it in the trash bin he then cussed at me saying "f*^ you". I was abused by others recently so after hearing him cussing at me, i started shaking and heart start pounding even though i tried to stay peaceful. Due to him cussing at me it took longer to do my laundry because i was a bit traumatized by memory recalls after he cussed at me with F word. I was suppose to finish my laundry before midnight if he did not cuss at me with F word and also yelled at me. I finished drying my laundry right at 12 midnight closing time. Since his hostile behavior towards me, i did not finish gathering my laundry and then exit the laundromat until 12:10am because of traumatization from the cleaner male's hostile behavior. Right before i left, the cleaner male took a broom and flicked ( from 5 feet to 7 feet away) the dust and small trash on the floor hard towards my washed and dried blanket i just took out of the dryer while i was trying to gather my clothes to exit the building, then after he flicked the dust and dirt from the floor to my cleaned and dried blanket and clothes, he said "F#% you" one more time right when i was about to leave with my clothes. So when he did that I told him to stop and do not sweep the floor around and very near clothes to my just cleaned clothes placed on the ground on top of my clean bags. Then he immediately 1 min afterwards instead of using a broom he using another floor swifter and got close to my clean clothes again so i had to ask him to stop in a civil manner and let me gather my clothes and exit the laundromat first then clean the floor i am standing on next to the dryer. Because of the male cleaner's hostility towards me that night, i did not exit the laundromat until 12:10am past midnight closing time. I was suppose to exit at around 12am midnight closing time. The male cleaner also accused me of staying past midnight for 10 minutes (due to his hostile behavior and using F#% words against me, dirtying by flicking towards my cleaned clothes with floor dust and small trash with broom, and possibly trying to touch his broom and floor swifter to dirty of clean clothes, i was not able to exit until 10 min after closing while with hostility from the male cleaner). The whole time at missing socks i was just cleaning my clothes peacefully and reasonably like anyone else, even though with the male cleaners hostile behavior towards me, i did not engage in any conversation with him except to let him know 1) those clean trash bag next to the small trash bin is from me, and 2) also ask him not to move his floor broom and swifters too close to my cleaned clothes, while i received hostility from the male cleaner at missing socks laundromat. read more

This place is a RIP-OFF! Used to love this place but spend my quarters somewhere else now. I thought the card instead of quarters would be convenient, but they require a deposit. The deposit used to be $4 but recently I paid $10 after I had left my card in a machine the last time. Often I have checked the water temp at different times of the day and it rarely feels warm, even when you have selected the hot temperature button. I never leave stuff behind except at this place. I have left two or three of the cards behind with cash on them, and tried to email the owner but never got a response. So there went about $25 or more down the drain. The very last time I was there I left in tears. My card, which had about $15 on it, wouldn't work in any of the machines. I was about to buy a new card to see if that would work and realized how ridiculous this was as I would have to pay yet another deposit AND lose all the money on my old card. So I was getting ready to do laundry, and realized if I went to the same (but good) laundromat for the Nth time, I would explode, and then have even more laundry to do. Thus, I headed to Yelp, and found a sock-named laundromat. The funny name drew me in, and the good reviews had me. So, I loaded up the car with laundry, and was off to hopefully not lose my own socks. I got there, and as it was past 9am, and no parking lot/free street parking available, I had to park at a meter and put a bunch of change in to get an hour. That was slightly irksome, but I figured the trade-off was worth it. My first thought was "Holy shnikeys, it's like a minimalist exhibit at MOMA." That is to say, the design of the place is modern, slightly spartan, with a row of about six beach-type chairs in a line across from some dryers, then a middle row of washers, lined with more dryers. Then I saw the change machine. Or so I thought...DUH DUH DUH, the plot thickens. Instead of a change machine, however, it is a card system, where you pay an initial payment of $10- $4 for a card (which is refundable), along with $6 in credit, and are now able to add more money (via cash or credit card) to the card. Sounds good in theory, and it was nice not having to go get cash back or find an ATM. However, the price of the washers ($2.75 or so for a load) and the dryers (flat fee of about $2.75 without the option of adding smaller increments of time to the load), coupled with the needing to pay for parking (which is not a problem if you get there early enough, or park far enough away, or can walk there) made it an overall expensive visit to get some clothes clean. Ultimately, the price is worth it if you want to do laundry somewhere aesthetically pleasing to an incredibly bizarre level (and even then, it is a specific aesthetic geared towards a specific clientele base). For me, however, I do not need doing laundry to be something an indie film is made of. I will hang my head in shame, and go back to the no frills, somewhat small, but reliable laundromat I usually go to. *sniffle* read more
