Mitten might have my favorite pizza in GR! Perfectly topped your way (I get Da Meat Hook--a meat lover's playground of pizza pie!) and fired to give it a crust that's crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I have been coming to Grand Rapids for a while now and most recently we have been coming here for work. One of our goals is to visit the breweries we haven't been to yet. I am so glad we found Mitten! I loved the concept of a Pizza Flight to go along with their Beer Flight. The place is small and filled up quickly but I am told that there is an upstairs dining area as well. The pizza's we had were very tasty and the beer complimented the pizza well. This really is closer to a 5 star review for me but one thing that was a little bummer is that the pizza flight we had didn't really look like some of the pictures we have seen and while you get 4 small pieces per style of pizza, quite a few really only had 2 or 3 because of the amount of crust there was. We made several brewery stops tonight and Nick was the most accomodating and friendliest person we encountered. He shared his knowledge of the beers and the brewery. He gave us tips on who to contact about some brewing questions. He helped us select the beers and made some suggestions based on what we said we liked. We never felt rushed and never felt like we had to wait for service. Now for the brewery. We sat upstairs and the beers were decent at an average price. The menu was a little off from the board. There were 2 or 3 beers not on the menu that we spotted afterwards on the chalk board. It was clean and not too crowded on a Wednesday night. The bathrooms sparked great debate amongst us as they are "all-gender" bathrooms. I kinda assumed bathroom meant all gender until you slapped a label on it. My wife disagreed strongly. Another smack on the wrist for an established restaurant in my hometown that I never made it to. The Mitten is a mecca of wonderful food and good beer. Finally came here to check out the goods and was not disappointed in the least. Had a couple different brews that were all good. The pizza and appetizers stole the show though. A great thin(ish) crust loaded with whatever toppings one could want. I settled on the Curse of the Goat which features tomato basil sauce, house hand-pinched sausage, goat cheese, fresh basil, peppadew peppers. The pie was all that and had flavor for days! I was in pizza heaven. Also ordered a couple apps. The Phil Sticks are amped-up cheesy breadsticks topped with Scoville Farms Everidae Sweet Habanero sauce, mozzarella cheese, and Cajun seasoning. They were all that and so was the simple yet delightfully delectable Caprese salad. Nicely presented was a long plate of sliced fresh mozzarella, tomatoes and basil. Seasoned with balsamic vinegar and pesto it was refreshing as a Caprese salad comes! This one made my wife particularly happy. I'd come back to the Mitten in a heartbeat. We got our beers within minutes but our appetizer came out almost same time as our pizza. The spinach artichoke dip was hardly a dip and I have a hard time even saying it's a 1 star dish. We were hopeful with the pizza considering the reviews and awards they get. Their pizza was everything you read about. It's very good pizza. We had the flight of pizza and a flight of beer. Overall their pizza and beer are 5 stars but their service and other food options keep them from getting a 5th star from me. We waited about 30 minutes for a table and eventually made it to the upstairs. We sat at the long table. We ordered two Raspberry ciders which were fantastic. Not to sweet or bitter, great overall taste. We also ordered soft pretzels, a Stromboli (feta cheese, tomato and bacon) and a traditional cheese and pepperoni and pizza. My husband and I just visited Grand Rapids, and The Mitten was the first stop on our (self-guided) brewery tour. The baseball-themed decor and beers were delightful. The beer flight had the best presentation of any brewery we visited on our trip (I got a flight at every brewery). The mini beers come in a Michigan/Mitten-shaped wooden board. Adorable! We got the 'Pizza Flight' - which was 1/4 of 6 different pizzas. Perfect for 4 people. Our favorites were the Hog Heaven, Westerdog, and Curse of the Goat. I'm sure this bar is crazy during baseball season, but it wasn't too busy when we went. After 6pm, more street parking becomes available, so we didn't have a problem parking, either. read more

If you are eating with 2+ people I highly recommend splitting the pizza flight. It will feed up to 4 people but if you are going on a date night it is fun and then you can have leftovers ;). I absolutely love the westerdog pizza... yes HOT DOGs on a pizza! So good! The chicken and waffles is a sweet tasty pizza, but both of those I would only get in a flight and not a whole pizza. Otherwise, the cursed goat or heater would be my top choice for a whole pizza. Both are unique but not too crazy! My husbands favorite is da meat hook, but I'd rather have more than meat on my pizza! I LOVE this place! The atmosphere is so well designed. It is in an old firehouse and has keep the essence alive. Upstairs has ample seating and is decorated in a Michigan sports teams theme! They have a great rotating beer selection, which are all cleverly named to go with the theme. The pizza is the reason I keep coming back. They do wood fired pizza so the crust is awesome. You can choose from a bunch of different pizza options. Or if you can't choose, they have pizza tastings where you can order 6 different options! What a great place in Grand Rapids! We were in town for the Tulip Festival and decided to stop here for an early dinner. We got a table upstairs and we had the BEST waiter, Don. He was so friendly and just a ray of positivity for the whole dinner. My husband and I kept saying how it's rare nowadays to get a genuinely nice and happy waiter. He even told us a little about the history of the building. Now to the food - we got a flight of pizza which honestly is the best idea ever! Each pizza was super tasty and such a fun way to try a new restaurant. My husband and I ate about half the flight and took the rest home for leftovers.
