I recently stopped in town for the holidays . They were closed the day after Christmas. I didn't see a sign at the door but the no pick up calls makes sense. I've been a loyal customer for years. This place use to be THE go to spots years ago but I feel has dropped off as of late. Now it's restaurant policy for botanas that you have to either pay by phone or come to the resturant and pay them they cook your food. It seemed new as the restaurant was having folks order large amounts of food then not come to pick up. I get that but also not very common (IMO). There was a miscommunication with the employee over the phone. When I showered up and paid, it was clear they were barely starting my order. I waited about 25 min for my order in the small sitting area. For a botana for 4, it seemed a bit light on the meat (mixta with beef and chicken). They did do a good job with packing up the rice, beans and salsa. My wife really likes the breakfast here and that's another reason I keep coming. Average / subpar coffee. We stopped in there after leaving our doctor's office and I am glad we did. The breakfast was very good and the price was right. The service was very good and the ambiance is very nice. Even though we don't live nearby we will stop in when in the area. read more

The Moonlight Cafe is exactly the small locally owned restaurant you want to see when visiting Edinburg. You go in knowing you are going to be taken care of quickly with recipes they have been making like clockwork for years, leaving little room for error and promising a delicious, well practiced dish. On this trip, I walked in right at open for a quick taco before heading to work and was taken care of by the owner himself who had my order ready in no time. Not a complaint in the world as this is exactly the kind of place I am drawn to and prefer to send my money! We always stay at the Confort Inn when we come down to the valley and we walk across to eat at The Moonlight Cafe. We always enjoy a couple drinks and chips and dip before our meal. Tonight the first thing I notice is a note on the top of the menu stating chips and dip $2.50. Seriously, we're at a Mexican restaurant near the border and you have to pay for the chips and dip? I know the last time we were here the first round of chips and dip was free but we were charged when we asked for more. The next thing we were told the only cold beer they had was Corona which we don't like. However, the service was excellent and the food we ordered was good. We paid cash so had to ask for the extra 3% merchant fee be removed from our bill. Pretty sure we won't go back. read more

This was on a top list of restaurants based on Google and was right next to hotel we stayed at so it was a must try. I'm originally from the RGV so it's always great to come back and have some delicious Mexican food and this place was hands down one of the best. The place was a very warm and inviting place and staff was very friendly and attentive. I had the picadillo plate and my husband had the carne guisada and we both had flour tortillas. was out of town and it was my first time trying this place I saw the bad reviews but thought hey it might be good.. I ordered FOUR tacos and was there for 35 minutes...went inside finally got my tacos and they reassured me all 4 were in there..get to my car and they were not. Had to go back inside for the missing 2 then I go to my car and see one of the sloppiest tacos I've ever gotten. The bean from the taco was completely smeared all OUTSIDE the taco and on the foil and hardly anything in the actual tortilla. Had to go back inside and SHOW them what was given to me and the female manager asked the kitchen to make me a new one. Had to wait some more for this one taco I asked if anything could be done for me for such the inconvenience so said no sorry I can't do anything right now and after all the confusion and terrible service I had no choice but to leave without my money back and with food I no longer wanted. Ate here last night 8/1/2020 as well as breakfast the same day. VERY VERY good authentic Mexican food! I had the Chimichanga. Moonlight DOESN'T feel right. (Pardon the Yacht Rock pun). I've been a long term patron of The Moonlight Cafe Though I've never been thrilled with it, the location is convenient and my coworkers like it. (I try not to judge their choices, but I'm beginning to wonder about them.) Today we visited for an early lunch. I usually tend to order the (often greasy) breakfast tacos, but they raise the prices after 11. (They jump to $2.99) Same taco, different price. And this was before the outrageous price of eggs. It's more of a principle thing for me. If the food is delicious, I don't mind paying more; however, the food at the moonlight is akin to a relationship that has lost loving feeling. Also, the breakfast salsa is laden with comino. No thanks. I opted for the plain panchos and a tea. (Their soda is often flat.) Our server brought us chips and the salsa they serve for lunch (at my request). The cook must have been in a hurry and forgot to salt the chips, as they had zero flavor. The panchos weren't much better in the flavor department. If you have never tasted flavorless refried beans, you should be thankful. To add insult to injury, the tasteless brown gloopy"frijoles" were lukewarm, nor was every chip covered. The serving of avocado was so minuscule that I could eat in one bite. Between tasteless bites and conversation, I checked out my coworker's tacos. They looked like my 5 year old nephew had made them- blindfolded. She described them as bland. At the very least, the service was decent (this hasn't always been the case at The Moonlight) and my tea was good. The server asked if I needed a refill and got nervous when I asked for one to go. She brought be a small cup. (I had nothing to pour into it). She told me she would have to charge me if she refilled my glass. I suppose I missed reading that there was a limit on tea refills. Sorry, Moonlight, you have lost an over 10 year customer because, frankly, your food sucks and your policies are ridiculous. This breakup has been a long time coming, but now, it's over for good. I go here very often for lunch. I always order the cheese enchiladas and although they have quick service the enchiladas never come with the cheese melted inside. It's like they sprinkle the cheese inside and expect the warm tortilla to melt it. Expect the cheese enchiladas to have short amounts of cheese and for it not to be melted. This is a reoccurring situation. Each time I have to ask for extra cheese and not sure if they charge me each time. And the enchiladas still come with little cheese. read more

Our waitress was very rude. All three of us ordered soups and it took a long time before we were served. Two other tables that got there after we did were served first. People notice this! When I got my soup it was cold so I send it back. We got two caldos and the third one took a longer time. When people go together we expect to get our food at the same time. We asked for more chips and the waitress said they were making more yet she never brought us some. This is my favorite restaurant in Edinburg and maybe even the entire Rio Grande Valley. It's super cheap, the service is quick and friendly, and I can always count on an abundant and satisfying meal. I have not been here in over a year. I ordered Chicken enchiladas, which I had tried in the past. First bite, there was a small chicken bone. Next bite the same. I started to feel sick! I opened up the remainder of enchilada and there were additional bones. I notified the waitress who called someone over who claimed to be the owner. She asked me what I expected, that chickens have bones. I showed her the small pile of bones from the one enchilada and she didn't care. I told her I wasn't going to finish the meal and despite having only eaten 1/4 of one enchilada, she told me I was just trying to get out of paying for my meal. I had enchiladas suizas and at $8.95 for the plate it was a decent value.I was brought chips that seemed authentic. I hate factory chips. These appeared to be actual corn tortilla that was fried up. They were cold and seemed stale. Good chips can tip a average meal up a level. Waiters don't speak English... This is the Valley. Read where the tortillas were excellent....none were provided. Stopped by the restaurant to get some enchiladas for my elderly mother who didn't want the sides. The restaurant is close to the hotel so I stopped by. Walked in to a mostly empty dining room and waited at the counter for about 2 minutes before a young man with a Dallas Cowboys cap on came out and asked how he could help. By the way, I am a Cowboy's fan also. I told the young man only enchiladas no sides. He said that would be $7.99 + tax which I thought was bit too much but I was on hurry to get my Mom her dinner. The reason I gave this place 2 stars is because of the service I'll give the food 3 stars. After about a 15 minute wait, while the young man was talking to a friend/family member while I was waiting, I asked him if he could check on my dinner - I wouldn't think 3 cheese enchiladas will take that long. He replied by saying that he would be notified by the kitchen staff when it was ready. He continued his conversation and the friend/family member left about 5 minutes later and the young worker went back to the kitchen and walked back w/ my after another 2 minute wait.
