    Pounded yam

I'm giving a four because I would have preferred to eat there since I live 30 min away. Parking lot waiting. Fresh food. It may be ideal to order ahead if you don't wanna wait. Reasonable prices. Clean restaurant. Nice, Kind, and Professional staff. Pics of food on the menu look great. Menu explains the dishes accurately. I enjoy African food but I have had Ethiopian, Haitian, Senegalese, Ghanaian, and now Nigerian. I can say that the spinach and egusi stew was excellent. Very very good and the meat was very tender and flavorful. The pounded yam and jollof was delicious too. The jollof was not too smoky but still earthy and well balanced. I also had Aponkye goat meat with hot sauce and maybe suya. The goat was tender and fresh. No shade to this restaurant but I love Yassa's senagalese jollof as it's more garlic-y. But this place didn't miss with any of dishes or flavors. I can't wait to try the Volta Lake special, pepper soup, and oxtail. Everything was delicious.

    4. Motherland Combo Hot pepper soup Peanut soup Fufu

My fiancé and I were craving African food so we got our fix from The Mukase. They have two locations, one in uptown and one in Bolingbrook. We ordered two motherland combos which came with: plantains, our choice of rice and we picked Joloff, beans, and our choice of protein, I picked chicken and my fiancé picked beef. We also ordered hot pepper soup and peanut butter soup with fufu on the side. Their cooking was absolutely delicious and definitely satisfied our craving.

Fufu, palm nut soup with fish and goat, fried plantains

If you've never had African cuisine before, fufu with palm nut soup is the perfect place to begin--and the plate I enjoyed was nothing short of unforgettable. The fufu itself was smooth, stretchy, and subtly earthy, acting like the perfect canvas for the rich, bold flavors of the soup. The palm nut soup was a true showstopper--velvety, with a deep orange hue that promised warmth and delivered in every bite. It carried that signature balance of savory and slightly nutty richness, spiced just enough to awaken your senses without overpowering. Every spoonful was packed with layers of flavor that lingered long after tasting. The proteins elevated the dish to another level: tender goat that fell off the bone, full of robust flavor, and fish that melted delicately, soaking up the soup's spices. Together they created a harmony of textures and tastes--hearty yet refined. On the side, the golden fried plantains brought the perfect sweet counterpoint. Crispy edges with soft, caramelized centers balanced the savory depth of the soup and tied the whole meal together beautifully. This dish wasn't just food--it was an experience, a celebration of tradition and flavor. Eating it felt like being welcomed to a table full of history, warmth, and comfort. It's a meal I'd go back for again and again.

    Okra soup w/ chicken

Found this gem while exploring the area. There's a park w/ a pond across the street (great place to eat). Food: Okra soup w/ chicken very flavorful with a perfect spice. Portion very generous. Service: helpful and friendly. Ambiance: not a sit down restaurant so order a head or go to the park while you're waiting.

Out of the 5 different African spots we've tried, Mukase remains at the top. Specially for the spinach and egusi and Fufu. Soooo flavorful. This location is just as good as the city. I would recommend ordering in advance as it will take up to 40mins, but it is cooked fresh always. Clean environment and nice service.

LESS FOR MORE This…read moreHalal chicken spot charges an awful lot for their food. The Port of Peri Peri has a storefront next to a Dunkin on Weber Rd in Bolingbrook, about half a mile north of I-55.  We tried them once before (in 2020) hoping for a better experience five years later, unfortunately that wasn't the case. My biggest hangup is that everything is just too expensive.  A ¼ chicken is $10 and comes with no sides, which are $4.50 each.  Compare this to Nando's where the same ¼ chicken is $7.75 and sides are just $3. The chicken & rice bowl ($18) was my wife's pick and she enjoyed it, however I don't think it was a good value.  Twenty bucks for what amounts to 4 chicken tenders over rice?  C'mon. I will say that their stuff is legitimately SPICY.  Even the 'mild' has plenty of punch, nevermind the 'hot' which sent me into a coughing fit.  Definitely steer towards the lower end of their heat scale. Their pop machine was out-of-order (and it appeared to have been for some time).  Dining room chairs weren't the comfiest, and the random chandelier - although elegant - doesn't in with fit the ambiance. Employees were nice. I used a coupon mailer for $5 off, which made the eyebrow-raising cost a bit more tolerable.  Without one, I probably wouldn't return. * TL;DR * I'm not a fan of overpaying, be it clothes, cars, or chicken(s). An a la carte sandwich here is a whopping $14!  (only $9 at Nando's) Also of note, these Peri fries don't come with a special mayo or anything for dipping.  Perhaps corn is a better choice? The best thing I can say about Port of Peri Peri is that they don't play around with spices.  When they say something is hot, they mean it.  Other than that, not too many redeeming qualities here.

It was awhile before someone came to tend to us but as my husband was explaining to me, in the African culture, you go to them to tell them what you want, not the other way around. They were in the back busy cooking and preparing, there is a open window where you can order. We got to meet the owner who the restaurant is named after, Anayo. He was awesome! I wanted to order the fried rice or the coconut rice but those are large orders for several people which are only for call in but they don't indicate that on the menu. I got to order the last meat pie they had and OMG, I'm still dreaming about how good it was! I ordered the jollof rice and told them mild spice but it was still a bit too hot for me but in Nigeria, that is how they spice their food, LOL. It comes with goat meat and fish. I loved the fish as it was flavorful, crispy and delicious! I will make sure to order that fish again. Hubby got the Nkwobi made with cow feet, scotch bonnet pepper, onion, palm oil Spinach and seasonings. It was so hot but he enjoyed every bit of it. Anayo told us that they have only been open for 1 year. I hope they continue and thrive. I got to taste a strawberry yogurt drink that they had in the frig that was in a 1 liter container. I really enjoyed that also. You get the bill after you pay - they told us our total for us to pay. Not used to that but they aren't the first business that I've experience to do that. Area was very quiet that evening. Thank you Nayo's - see you soon!
