I usually am enamored with speakeasies, but it was really hard to love this one. 1. Reservations - I've been with OpenTable and other restaurant online booking systems for decades but this is a first for me. They have two separate OpenTable listings (as noted in other reviews). I was clear in that i just wanted an after work chill happy hour. I booked for 4:30. After promptly showing up at the wren for my 4:30 appointment I was told, Naisho room doesn't open until 5 pm.... So why did you let me book for 4:30?!?! No explanation. No apology just "you're early..." 2. I promptly dropped $70 for drinks and an appetizer at the Wren bar to hold me and my guests over. It wasn't bad but that's not what I was hoping for... at 4:30. 3. The service to the speakeasy was great. The "gym stag" had our 4:30 and let us in at... 5:03 pm... 4. The waitress inside the speakeasy was super awkward and off putting. She really needs a class on etiquette. I ordered quite a bit right off the bat but my guests slow roll throughout the experience and she didn't seem too happy with that. Taking away our menus doesn't encourage us to order either. You charge $22 for one tea sandwhich but can't afford to print out more menus? The menus were also pretty dingy and I hand sanitized after using them. 5. Food. Was mid at best. Not at all authentic Japanese. I had the oyster shooter, temaki, Wagyu toast, Wagyu quesadilla, and mocktail. The oyster shooter was too sweet. And you could only taste the oyster and caviar at the end. Mostly as an aftertaste. There was a "too sweet" aspect to most of the food. The temaki was okay and I liked the crunchy bits but they went too far with the plastic wrap on the seaweed. The plastic wrap gave me Japanese 7-11 onigiri vibes. You do that if you aren't efficient enough to get the food out to guests at once and the seaweed will get soggy. I'm not sure if it was for a "fun factor" for people who are unfamiliar with grocery store onigiri in Asia but in a restaurant it should be done for you. The Wagyu toast was a HUGE disappointment. It was Sooooo sweet. I filet barely taste anything except the gross, sweet jam. And the toast was soggy and the texture of the bread felt prepared the day before and like refrigerator. It was not toasted at all. The star was the Wagyu quesadilla with beef tendon chips. It was the cheapest item on the menu and the most filling and delicious. 6. Drinks were very good. Expect about $20 a pop... $50 for the Japanese whiskey is highway robbery. Nothing really "rare." I have most bottles on the kitchen counter from the Virginia ABc or DC Costco. You can buy an entire bottle of the Japanese whiskey at Costco for the cost of one serving here. Overall, the Naisho room felt like all hype. For over $100 I was still pretty hungry. If the food tasted good I would have ordered more but I didn't think it was worth it. You get a nice view but it's the same from most of the capital one building. Same view from the brewery. Don't waste your money. Go elsewhere. Plenty of better happy hour spots for much much less considering if you stay for more than two hours you have to pay for parking (we did becuase, well, our reservation was at 4:30...) read more

I thought I had booked the omakase experience, but realized I accidentally selected the wrong option, which was disappointing at first. The staff explained they prepare omakase for a set number of guests, so they couldn't accommodate us last-minute. That said, the manager and his staff, our wonderful server completely turned the experience around with their kindness. They comped part of our meal, brought out desserts for my husband's birthday, and even treated me to a mocktail. It was such a thoughtful gesture and made the night feel really special. The service was warm and attentive, and we still had an amazing time. I've already booked omakase for next week and can't wait to come back! The place has great vibes. Highly recommend!! The Naisho Room is an absolute must-visit! I went to their speakeasy located in the Watermark Hotel, and it completely exceeded my expectations. When you arrive, check in at the small table in the lobby, then head upstairs to the gym, you honestly have no idea where you're going next, which adds to the fun. From there, you move through a sauna (with a cool smoke/steam effect!) and finally enter the main space, which has an incredible Tokyo nightlife vibe. The origami-themed decor and lighting make it feel like night-time in Tokyo. The Naisho Room tends to be a dessert and drinks after dinner. They do have an amazing food menu, but limited. Everything on their food menu was delicious especially the rolls. Their in-house ice cream is a must, matcha and miso were my picks. My friend was wary of the miso, but it ended up being my favorite, tasting like rich caramel. The crème brûlée is fantastic, and the donuts are divine. Their hand rolls are also top-notch, every dish I tried was delicious. Drinks are excellent too; I especially loved the ube cocktail. Reservations are made via Instagram, where you get a code to enter. They also have a separate okasake section, which adds another fun element to the experience. So secret, they put stickers on the phone, which is honestly kinda random. The lychee cocktail ( The Pearl of the Orient ) was pretty good and had a strong lychee flavor but no actual lychee in the drink itself. It actually tastes the same as the one at Wren. The menu has a limited number of small bites. The wagyu tartare toast was mid--they put wagyu in front of the menu too much. Honestly is too much of a gag for me. The Wagyu Kamameshi (Wagyu fried rice) was good, but the waiter mixed it up for us instead of asking. Lobster Crunch was easily the best, and the best way I could describe it was Lobster deep fried with shrimp chips. Honestly nothing super stellar and really not that hidden except that you need a reservation and go to Wren front desk. Honestly was just a more hidden Wren. Decided to try this hidden gem (wink wink) while staying at a nearby hotel. If you know, you know. The entrance alone is incredibly unique, and the interior design does not disappoint. This quaint Japanese-inspired speakeasy was such a delightful surprise in so many ways. We came here on a whim to celebrate my birthday, and I'm so glad we did. My husband, my bestie, and I started with the Wagyu tendon chips--phenomenal. Definitely a treat if you've never had them. Think upscale pork rinds taken to the highest level. We also shared the mini Wagyu kamameshi, which was soooo delightful. The presentation was unexpected--the meat arrives raw, but the heat from the bowl slowly cooks it into the rice. The result? Flavors that absolutely burst in your mouth, with top-tier Wagyu that delivers on every level. For drinks, the bartender made me a lemon drop with Haku Vodka. I'd never tried it before, but wow--it was incredibly smooth. My friend ordered a cocktail with Roku Gin and had zero complaints. I think real alcoholics drink gin... but that's another story. Our group requested an early time for the weekend so we could have dinner elsewhere and glad we did. For us, they did not escort us up until our whole party was present (which I agree with). We got to the not so secret sauna entrance 20 minutes past our reservation time and there was no one there. We were a bit confused but after a couple of minutes we walked in and it was empty and the chefs/servers looked so confused. They asked us to step outside and wait for the hostess to escort us in... except there was no hostess in site. Another couple came back and said the same thing happened to them and they were just going to go back in. We followed them in and one of the servers just looked at us and then after a moment he said "oh, I guess I'll seat you". Not the entrance we expected but ok. We got a round of drinks, lobster crunch, kanpachi foie gras crudo, three different temakis, and mini kamameshi. Cocktails were good but I would probably hit up another cocktail bar in Fairfax for my night cap for the time being. The small plates were not bad but they were really bites and mini. Get ready to drop some serious coin if you plan on having dinner here. There was also no soap in one of the unisex bathrooms last week and last night. If you are wanting to provide a luxury experience, tending to the restrooms should not be overlooked. Granted they have Aesop hand soap and lotion in there but an empty dispenser for soap not once but two times in a span of a week was disappointing. Also when we left the hostess was there with a guy who was dressed in work out gear putting stickers by the hostess stand. They never put stickers over our phone *shrug*. They don't allow you to take pictures inside so they placed a sticker on your phone upon entering. I had a really good experience and disappointed about seeing reviews with pictures or complaining about the reservations system. This is purely about the experience versus food / drinks which I think a lot of DC's "speakeasies" have lost. First reservations, website says up to 21 days prior to. Key word "up to". I sent a reservation on Monday for a Thursday seating and received notification the night before I was accepted. If you do not receive an acceptance email, don't show up. Experience 10/10. I love they had to build the hotel with this concept in mind. You truly would never know there was a bar in the middle of a gym with a "trainer" at the door. It was all very cute. Why take pictures if they ask you not to? That's just lame but I digress. Food / Drink - Do not come here for dinner. This is a cute after dinner spot. Small bites ( one chicken wing had to be the craziest thing I saw... lol), and drinks in cute cups. The price was on par with DC food & drinks ($17-20 something). Overall, we had a great time. They have this INCREDIBLY pretentious reservation system where you can't actually make a reservation, you have to submit a request (and only up to 21 days in advance!) and they will somehow decide if you're worthy enough to be considered. I suppose I was deemed worthy, because I got an Opentable reservation confirmation for the next day, 23 hours from now, 20 days after submitting my request, long after I had completely forgotten about it. The cocktails were excellent, food delicious, and staff attentive. Want a selfie? Don't expect to see much from the Naisho Room on Instagram or TikTok. To keep the mystery alive, no photos are allowed. They even put a sticker over your phone's camera lens. It's all part of the fun. I attempted to request to get access to The Naisho Room on a Tuesday looking for Saturday booking via their website. No confirmation on if my request was even received. No big deal I'll wait a couple of days. Fast forward a couple days, still no word, so I filled out the Contact Us request from their website. Again no response or confirmation that they even got that. Fast forward to Saturday, feeling anxious I called in the morning. No answer so I left a voicemail to call me back... I'm just trying to figure out if it's a Yes or a No, just acknowledge and tell me either way... bc some people try to plan things. Fast forward to around 4pm - Let me drive to there to talk with someone in person. I get there and Wren is setting up for the night and there are a few people at the bar. I ask one of the guys there and he tries to find someone to help but no dice.... So at this point I'm just going to come back later. A few hours later I show up and ask and low and behold I didn't make the cut (wasn't surprised) but just a little pissed off bc I wish I didn't have to waste my time when a response to any of my inquires to tell me "No" would have saved me so much time and effort. One of the coolest speakeasy's I've ever been to! They don't do traditional reservations so you have to message them which is hard if you don't have social media. We were able to get in on a Friday night without too much issue. The drinks were phenomenal and served in super fun cups! The pricing of the cocktails made sense given the quality and was much cheaper than the wren pricing which is not as tasty! The food was also very tasty I absolutely loved the wagyu toast. I think the pricing was pretty reasonable for quality and atmosphere. I found the DJ to be a little too loud given that it was a very intimate space. Love the matchboxes when you come in! After waiting several weeks to get a reservation we (party of 4) were excited to see what this restaurant was all about. After some issues confirming the reservation we were taken to the "secret entrance" and were seated. Service was friendly and we reviewed the drink and food menu. For drinks, the prices are "expense account" levels ($40 for an old fashioned). We ordered drinks (4 cocktails were $85). The menu surprised us as it is extremely limited. We expected a creative Japanese menu however this one is very brief. We ordered what we thought were hand rolls but instead are little squares of nori filled with a tablespoon of chopped fish. I had the scallop that covered the taste of the scallop with too much sauce. Others had the crab, which was good, although tiny. We shared the "tendon chips" which were actually pork rinds like you buy at any grocery store. Overall the restaurant is small and very loud. The atmosphere is pleasant visually. We are fine dining restaurant pros, and we rated Naisho a solid "meh". Not horrible, but for $100 a person we left hungry. Adding one more issue. I read that this restaurant is a "no tip restaurant"? I was so excited to get a last minute reservation here. But man was I disappointed. After getting to the actual location the entire hype died for me. The drinks were good so that's why they got 3 stars! But the food was bad, we got a Waygu that I promise as spoiled meat and the ambiance for a speakeasy was not there. The sun was beaming inside.
