Food: 3.5. Came by on a Sunday around 6 pm. Place is associated with Mr Rick's which is connected next door. Both places share the same menu. Custom House is more an eatery while Mr Rick's can have live music and there is a pool table. Place has inside and outside seating. You order and they give you a pager. Once your pager goes off, you go inside and pick up your order. I ordered their Clam Chowder Fries with the fries well done. Food was ready timely and was at the right temperature. It was okay and luckily the fries were prepared well done. I don't think the cheese works well with this dish. I would scratch the cheese and add more bacon. Service was friendly and efficient.

The new custom house was a great place to stop at for a quick snack and some delicious drinks. We ordered a side of fries to share... they were fresh, hot ,and delicious . We ordered a couple of drinks - a local beer and a tropical drink. The beachfront cocktail was perfect, sweet, just the right amount of alcohol and a good beach drink. Definitely brought on the ocean vibes. Staff was friendly and helpful picking out drinks Had TV's for sports games, which made it even better, so we didn't miss our teams playing!

The New Custom House couldn't be any truer of a statement. The inside looks cheaper with the hard surface seating. Gone are the booths and nice tables, now looks like Chipotle. Now no service. You go up and order and then grab your order, gone are the waitresses. The food quality has also gone down. What was my favorite clam chowder in a Breadbowl and Fish n Chips, has gone to a never again. The fish was so chewy. Sad. All these places are geared for the tourists and no longer the locals. *Another one bites the DUST*

This place has changed a lot since the last time we were here! It's no longer tables with service, you order and pay at the front and get a buzzer for your food. I got the street tacos which came with 5 steak tacos, and my husband got the fettuccine Alfredo with chicken. The kids meals were good size and the kids got a frisbee as a plate & a "toy". Super pet friendly, we so multiple dogs when we were there. I liked that they had a couple Crow and Wolf seltzers!

Stopped by the new Custom House mid-morning for a snack between breakfast and lunch and really enjoyed it. You order at the counter from a large, easy-to-read menu, and there's plenty of seating inside and out. We sat on the patio with the ocean just steps away--such a beautiful spot on the Avila boardwalk. The menu has a great variety. I went with a large clam chowder, which was hearty and satisfying, and added onion rings that were absolutely delicious--thick-cut, perfectly battered, and clearly not frozen. My friend had the half Caesar salad with a small chowder, which was a great lighter option. If I had one wish it would be that they offer all of their salads and a half portion size, the only one they offer in half portion is the Caesar. One unexpected highlight--their takeaway bag! It's sturdy, has handles, and is actually big enough to fit large containers comfortably. Such a small detail, but so well thought out. I also spotted a lobster roll on the menu that I'll definitely be back to try. Overall, great food, easy ordering, and a perfect beachside atmosphere. The bar is close by with pretty cocktails as well as standard beers and wines.

Drinks only! It's been awhile since we popped into this place within Avila! We were shocked by the transformation that occurred about a year ago to the inside: it's so light and beachy! Very welcoming with a great view to the outside! We curled up to the bar around 1030 and were welcomed by Michael. Michael was an excellent bartender who provided us great service and conversation. I had the Custom Bloody Mary that came with bacon, shrimp and olives and more...it was a breakfast of champions! This was a solid drink! It was great to see that locals and tourist visited this place! All treated with the same level of great service!

We took the kids to the beach and of course everyone was hungry for lunch when we got there. So we gave The New Custom House a try! My youngest tried the shrimp kids meal, my oldest got the cheeseburger kids meal and my mom and I tried their fried fish. My mom got hers with fries and I tried their clam chowder. There was a generous amount of clams in my cup of chowder and it had great flavor. The girl who took our order was super patient and answered all of our questions. The whole place had a nice vibe and they kept it clean. They had clean, nice restrooms too. We would definitely come back.

We stopped in at The Custom House during a weekend getaway to Avila Beach, and it was exactly what we needed after a day exploring the coast. Grabbed a window table just as the sun was dipping, and the view through those big panes--palm trees swaying, the pier lit up, waves rolling in under that golden-pink sky--was pure magic. You can feel the salty breeze even inside, which makes everything taste better. The food came out fast and generous. We dove into a massive basket of those crispy, cheese-drenched fries topped with herbs and parmesan--indulgent in the best way, perfect for sharing. Then the loaded nacho platter arrived piled high with meat, cheese, beans, and all the fixings--seriously satisfying and great for two. Sides of guac and ranch were fresh and spot-on. Cocktails were a highlight too: my wife's bright turquoise beach drink looked as good as it tasted, garnished with a pineapple wedge that added just the right zing. I went with a deep red dragon tea that paired beautifully with the savory bites. Service was friendly and efficient in that casual beach-town style--no fuss, just smiles and quick refills. The interior has a cool, modern-coastal feel with the blue tile, string lights outside, and that open layout that keeps things lively without being overwhelming. If you're in Avila looking for ocean views, hearty coastal comfort food, and a relaxed vibe to unwind, this place delivers. We'll definitely be back next time we're craving that seaside escape. Highly recommend grabbing a window seat at golden hour--you won't regret it. Loved it. Thanks for the great evening!

My food was excellent. It was so good I forgot to take a picture. They gave indoor and out door seating. Both are excellent. They play great music and have screens showing sports. I recommend the salmon salad. My kids loved the Mac and Cheese while my husband ate the great fish tacos.

Love this little beach food shack! Food was great, came out quick, beers are cold, and the patio is right on the boardwalk. Not much more I could ask for I only want to eat fish and chips and fish tacos when I'm at the beach, so Custom House is my new go to in Avila Best bites: Fish and chips were excellent. Light, crispy, flavorful Onion rings are perfectly crispy with a solid bite of onion Sunburst Other bites: Ribs on farmers market day were good, just don't expect Texas bbq quality

Surprise! You get potato chips with your shrimp cocktail!

The sign at the entrance said to find your own table, order inside and get a pager, go inside when pager goes off. We were surprised to have Helena take our drink and food order, then brought us a pager. A nice view of the ocean and pier. Weather is great!

This is the most amazing restaurant I have ever been to. They are completely dog friendly and the staff is the nicest I have ever had at any place anywhere. The food is tasty and well priced. Espresso martini was just ok but the bartender Chloe helping me is top notch! Usually it's pick up yourself but since she saw I had a puppy and minimal hands so she brought it to me without me even knowing. I came her Friday night and sat outside: the two male bar tenders were also so friendly and helpful but this Chloe made my experience. Chill spot for beach goers and a nice environment for a casual date. I noticed a pizza parlor connected of seafood isn't your jam.

I had the stream clams - not impress the clam was not in season, so small no meat at all. My entire pot is all other veggies.

    Are there vegan options?

In reviewing the menu online, the Custom House does not have any true vegan options. However they do have have some amazing salads that I'm sure you could order and omit the items you do not want making it a more vegan option.

    Dogs allowed at Custom House?

In outside dining only. They even have a dog menu and offer water.

We were not there during happy hour, so I am not sure. However, most places of this caliber usually do.

The way it works is you order at the bar, and then they will take down your phone number to text when your order is ready. However, it seemed like they were more using the loud speaker because I didn't receive the text until 9:57pm that night. My order was ready at 6:53, so we were looking at about a 23 minute wait - which I think is fair given how busy it was. The food itself was just okay to me. I didn't think it was anything to write home about, but that could be because I had some really great tri tip at the SLO Farmer's Market the day before. However, I will say, I really liked this place for the environment. There was live music, and a lot of table and chairs to just look out at the water and just enjoy the views. It was super family friendly, and I found it to be really enjoyable to just sit and hang out. I did find it odd that they close early (8pm) on a Friday night. At 7:59pm, the employees will come up to you to let you know that they close at 8pm, so it seems like they are strict about that.

The combination of textures between the flaky fish, soft beans, and chewy mushrooms makes for a great mouthful and the acidic and flavorful sauce brings all the ingredients together. We were visiting Avila Beach for my birthday week and decided to try out Sinor-Lavalle's wine tasting room a block back from Front Street and just down the way from our AirBnB. We met the owner and he suggested to mosey on over to Shuck Shack. We walked there, on Front Street, and met Evan, the GM. Evan took great care of us with some nice wines and then told us all about the tinned fish they had. Tinned Fish Sidenote: Two weeks before this trip if I heard the phrase tinned fish (TF) I would have thought oily mackerel or sardines smelling nasty. While I like anchovies, I was not prepared for TF. We were just in SanFran and The Kid's roomates were eating TF. Really? Yuck! Then we went to the Vintage Press in Visalia, CA, and 1/2 page of the large menu was 20 or 30 versions of TF. WTF? And now we were in Avila being told about the options and how delicious they were. Back to Shuck Shack. With Evan's guidance, we ordered a number of items off their menu including oysters (hauled in that morning), smoked trout TF, local salami, LandChos and Gildas. Check out the menu pics for descriptions. Paired with some great wines it was a fantastic culinary experience. Adding on to that the great service and setting of Avila Beach makes this an easy 5 star experience. GO! EAT VERY WELL!! HAVE FUN, Damnit!!!

It was balanced in sweetness, very light, and a great summer dessert. King Salmon: 2 please! The king salmon comes with Tabbouleh and green beans. This dish was my mom's and she was very pleased. One part of food I enjoy is not just the eating and experience, it's the aspect of reminisce in the flavors, analysis of the cooking, and trying to gauge cooking technique. For this dish, the salmon was perfectly cooked and it is not what we expected in the best way possible. This dish had so many different flavor profiles and wait until you taste the added kick of wasabi. Can I get another round? Korean Short Ribs: When I first saw this on the menu I was struck with asking myself how this dish might taste. It was one of those dishes where I thought, I have had plenty of short rib, I have had kimchi, but I have never seen them on one plate. More than that, I was hesitant as I like kimchi but not my to go to choice, nonetheless, I was drawn to this dish so of course I ordered it. Wow! Was I glad I did. My sister had the same order and we agreed the kimchi had such a nice kick to it. The spare rib was also thinly sliced making this dish easy and yummy. Now don't let that kick of heat scare you, I encourage everyone to try this dish. The rice sort of acts as a contrasting agent to help tone down the flavor and you just have to try it all together. All that said, I think service was awesome, then again SLO is a beautiful heart in California. But seriously we had an awesome waiter who shared with me the history of the restaurant. The story is also on their menu, but Nova's little sister restaurant is Red Luna and the big sister restaurant is Robin's Restaurant in Cambria. So good to know because I can now see how all this deliciousness connects! Big fan of these places and it's great to know they are one family. I don't think I have a favorite sibling of the three, but here's to another 5 stars for the middle child.

A must-stop, in Pismo Beach!…read more Every time we return to Pismo Beach, we have to make a stop at Zorros for breakfast (they are open for lunch and dinner too)! From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by Eric at the door -- and it's always nice when the first person you see makes you feel welcome. He walked us to our table, chatted with us, and even remembered us from 7 months ago, including where we sat! It seems like remembering guests is a theme in this town, and we love that hometown feeling. This visit, I made sure to take photos of the food, and we also left with a bag full of their homemade salsa and hot sauce. I only wish they sold these at grocery stores back home in Los Angeles because we would definitely buy them! Thankfully they ship!!! Melissa was our server and was wonderful -- friendly, attentive, and very accommodating with my husband's dairy allergy. My husband ordered the vegetarian burrito, and wow... it was packed with fresh green veggies you could literally see through the tortilla - my see photos! I asked Melissa for a recommendation between the shredded chicken burrito and the carne asada burrito, and she suggested the carne asada. I took her advice and ordered it as a wet burrito with sour cream -- and it did not disappoint! We love the friendly service, the homemade flavors, and the welcoming atmosphere at Zorros. We're already looking forward to our next visit to Pismo Beach and another breakfast here!

Rarely do I walk away from a dining experience where the quality of service and quality of food fight to outshine one another, but this was one of those spots. Our server, a German gentleman, was the consummate professional- always friendly, never overstepping, and added such a warm dimension to our meal. The fried green tomatoes and the white beet appetizers were standouts. I especially loved the vinegary dressing on the greens of the beet dish. For mains, we got the leek olive potato pizza, the ribeye, and the wood fire poached halibut. The avocado chimichurri that accompanied the ribeye was the perfect balance, and the sautéed greens under the fish were savory with the right amount of bite. I also liked their selection of mocktails; the pink pony club was a particular standout. All this for $200 was a better price tag than I was expecting, but most importantly, it got the stamp of approval from my notoriously picky grandmother and uncle. This spot is worth the drive.

Started with a Butterleaf Wedge which is unique and tasty. Great buttermilk dressing. Really enjoyed it. My grandson had the 50 Layer Lasagna. He loved it. My wife had the La Rustichella Garganelli. Very nice pasta dish but a tad on the drier side. She liked it. I had the Pollo Al Mattone which is a half chicken cooked under a brick. Moist with an unbelievable flavor. The polenta slice was absolutely fantastic. The atmosphere is very pleasant. Wood fire smell, clean bathrooms, etc.

I opted to do a trio with the bahn mi, tip o' Argentina, and the garlic fries. The food was good I forgot to take a picture! The tip o' Argentina was solid with the garlic aioli and the chimmichurri perfectly complimenting the steak and the lettuce and tomato adding a little bit of freshness. The buns they use for all of their sliders are soft, slightly sweet, and don't fall apart while you're eating. The Bahn Mi was even better. I love pork but was a little skeptical about pulled pork on a slider riffing on the flavors of a bahn mi. To my surprise and delight, it tasted just like grilled Vietnamese pork, which was perfectly complimented by the fresh and pickled veggies and surprisingly hot jalapeño. Finally, I got the garlic fries which were a massive portion, crisp, and very garlicky. Everything was good and with such a large and customizable menu, I'd definitely return if I was in the area again. I also want to give a shout out to the bartender, Kelsey. I sat at the bar and her service was attentive and she was very knowledgeable about the menu. We got the opportunity to chat for a bit and I loved her vibe, so definitely consider sitting at the bar if you're dining solo or with a friend.

Service was great, parking was easy (once we found the place - our GPS had us go to a different parking lot first), and the food tasted good.
