The new custom house was a great place to stop at for a quick snack and some delicious drinks. We ordered a side of fries to share... they were fresh, hot ,and delicious . We ordered a couple of drinks - a local beer and a tropical drink. The beachfront cocktail was perfect, sweet, just the right amount of alcohol and a good beach drink. Definitely brought on the ocean vibes. Staff was friendly and helpful picking out drinks Had TV's for sports games, which made it even better, so we didn't miss our teams playing!

Right on the boardwalk of Avila Beach so very convenient and the food hit the spot as it was our meal after laying on the beach for a few hours. Grab the cocktail and a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Clam chowder was chunky and really delicious, fish and chips were on point, but a bit disappointed with the ceviche. You order at the counter, they give you a buzzer and you grab your food once it's ready and bring it back to your table. They have a lot of seating both inside and out. Unfortunately, the line was pretty long and they only had one person taking orders, even though there are several employees in the restaurant. Eventually got another person to take orders, but it was after the line grew longer and longer.

Food: 3.5. Came by on a Sunday around 6 pm. Place is associated with Mr Rick's which is connected next door. Both places share the same menu. Custom House is more an eatery while Mr Rick's can have live music and there is a pool table. Place has inside and outside seating. You order and they give you a pager. Once your pager goes off, you go inside and pick up your order. I ordered their Clam Chowder Fries with the fries well done. Food was ready timely and was at the right temperature. It was okay and luckily the fries were prepared well done. I don't think the cheese works well with this dish. I would scratch the cheese and add more bacon. Service was friendly and efficient.

The New Custom House couldn't be any truer of a statement. The inside looks cheaper with the hard surface seating. Gone are the booths and nice tables, now looks like Chipotle. Now no service. You go up and order and then grab your order, gone are the waitresses. The food quality has also gone down. What was my favorite clam chowder in a Breadbowl and Fish n Chips, has gone to a never again. The fish was so chewy. Sad. All these places are geared for the tourists and no longer the locals. *Another one bites the DUST*

Stopped by the new Custom House mid-morning for a snack between breakfast and lunch and really enjoyed it. You order at the counter from a large, easy-to-read menu, and there's plenty of seating inside and out. We sat on the patio with the ocean just steps away--such a beautiful spot on the Avila boardwalk. The menu has a great variety. I went with a large clam chowder, which was hearty and satisfying, and added onion rings that were absolutely delicious--thick-cut, perfectly battered, and clearly not frozen. My friend had the half Caesar salad with a small chowder, which was a great lighter option. If I had one wish it would be that they offer all of their salads and a half portion size, the only one they offer in half portion is the Caesar. One unexpected highlight--their takeaway bag! It's sturdy, has handles, and is actually big enough to fit large containers comfortably. Such a small detail, but so well thought out. I also spotted a lobster roll on the menu that I'll definitely be back to try. Overall, great food, easy ordering, and a perfect beachside atmosphere. The bar is close by with pretty cocktails as well as standard beers and wines.

This place has changed a lot since the last time we were here! It's no longer tables with service, you order and pay at the front and get a buzzer for your food. I got the street tacos which came with 5 steak tacos, and my husband got the fettuccine Alfredo with chicken. The kids meals were good size and the kids got a frisbee as a plate & a "toy". Super pet friendly, we so multiple dogs when we were there. I liked that they had a couple Crow and Wolf seltzers!

Drinks only! It's been awhile since we popped into this place within Avila! We were shocked by the transformation that occurred about a year ago to the inside: it's so light and beachy! Very welcoming with a great view to the outside! We curled up to the bar around 1030 and were welcomed by Michael. Michael was an excellent bartender who provided us great service and conversation. I had the Custom Bloody Mary that came with bacon, shrimp and olives and more...it was a breakfast of champions! This was a solid drink! It was great to see that locals and tourist visited this place! All treated with the same level of great service!

We stopped in at The Custom House during a weekend getaway to Avila Beach, and it was exactly what we needed after a day exploring the coast. Grabbed a window table just as the sun was dipping, and the view through those big panes--palm trees swaying, the pier lit up, waves rolling in under that golden-pink sky--was pure magic. You can feel the salty breeze even inside, which makes everything taste better. The food came out fast and generous. We dove into a massive basket of those crispy, cheese-drenched fries topped with herbs and parmesan--indulgent in the best way, perfect for sharing. Then the loaded nacho platter arrived piled high with meat, cheese, beans, and all the fixings--seriously satisfying and great for two. Sides of guac and ranch were fresh and spot-on. Cocktails were a highlight too: my wife's bright turquoise beach drink looked as good as it tasted, garnished with a pineapple wedge that added just the right zing. I went with a deep red dragon tea that paired beautifully with the savory bites. Service was friendly and efficient in that casual beach-town style--no fuss, just smiles and quick refills. The interior has a cool, modern-coastal feel with the blue tile, string lights outside, and that open layout that keeps things lively without being overwhelming. If you're in Avila looking for ocean views, hearty coastal comfort food, and a relaxed vibe to unwind, this place delivers. We'll definitely be back next time we're craving that seaside escape. Highly recommend grabbing a window seat at golden hour--you won't regret it. Loved it. Thanks for the great evening!

We took the kids to the beach and of course everyone was hungry for lunch when we got there. So we gave The New Custom House a try! My youngest tried the shrimp kids meal, my oldest got the cheeseburger kids meal and my mom and I tried their fried fish. My mom got hers with fries and I tried their clam chowder. There was a generous amount of clams in my cup of chowder and it had great flavor. The girl who took our order was super patient and answered all of our questions. The whole place had a nice vibe and they kept it clean. They had clean, nice restrooms too. We would definitely come back.

My food was excellent. It was so good I forgot to take a picture. They gave indoor and out door seating. Both are excellent. They play great music and have screens showing sports. I recommend the salmon salad. My kids loved the Mac and Cheese while my husband ate the great fish tacos.

My friend and I went last week and it has changed since I was there. Not necessarily a bad thing! I got the clam chowder in a bread bowl which was very good and filling. I also got the shrimp cocktail. My friend also got the shrimp cocktail and I don't remember it being as big as it was this time otherwise we might have just bought one to share! Overall it was good and it's the perfect environment for a beachside restaurant.

Love this little beach food shack! Food was great, came out quick, beers are cold, and the patio is right on the boardwalk. Not much more I could ask for I only want to eat fish and chips and fish tacos when I'm at the beach, so Custom House is my new go to in Avila Best bites: Fish and chips were excellent. Light, crispy, flavorful Onion rings are perfectly crispy with a solid bite of onion Sunburst Other bites: Ribs on farmers market day were good, just don't expect Texas bbq quality

Surprise! You get potato chips with your shrimp cocktail!
    Dave M.

The sign at the entrance said to find your own table, order inside and get a pager, go inside when pager goes off. We were surprised to have Helena take our drink and food order, then brought us a pager. A nice view of the ocean and pier. Weather is great!

    Are there vegan options?

In reviewing the menu online, the Custom House does not have any true vegan options. However they do have have some amazing salads that I'm sure you could order and omit the items you do not want making it a more vegan option.

    Dogs allowed at Custom House?

In outside dining only. They even have a dog menu and offer water.

We were not there during happy hour, so I am not sure. However, most places of this caliber usually do.

We ended up sitting inside to avoid the evening breeze, and it turned out to be the perfect choice. The dining room was quaint, cozy, and relatively quiet, making it easy for the six of us to have great conversation throughout dinner. We started with the ratatouille, which absolutely blew us away, the bubbling brie, which was rich, gooey, and beyond delicious, and an order of frites that were crispy and satisfying. For our entrees, our table ordered the duck à l'orange, scallops (which I ordered and they were spectacular), a burger, mushroom ravioli, a house garden salad, and a Caesar salad. The mushroom ravioli was incredible, the garden salad was much larger than expected and very fresh, and the Caesar salad was crisp and flavorful. Every dish was beautifully prepared, and the quality of the food really stood out. The only downsides were that the burger was served plain, even though lettuce and onion had been requested, and the service was a bit slower than expected. We had a 6:15 p.m. reservation, so we arrived before the dinner rush and anticipated a quicker pace. Overall, the outstanding food, charming atmosphere, and prime location made for a wonderful dining experience. We'd definitely return the next time we're in Avila Beach.

The way it works is you order at the bar, and then they will take down your phone number to text when your order is ready. However, it seemed like they were more using the loud speaker because I didn't receive the text until 9:57pm that night. My order was ready at 6:53, so we were looking at about a 23 minute wait - which I think is fair given how busy it was. The food itself was just okay to me. I didn't think it was anything to write home about, but that could be because I had some really great tri tip at the SLO Farmer's Market the day before. However, I will say, I really liked this place for the environment. There was live music, and a lot of table and chairs to just look out at the water and just enjoy the views. It was super family friendly, and I found it to be really enjoyable to just sit and hang out. I did find it odd that they close early (8pm) on a Friday night. Even after our reservation time had passed, we had to check in with the host again before we were finally seated, despite there being plenty of empty tables. The service at the front definitely could have been handled better. The food, on the other hand, was very good with a great variety of options. I loved that they start you off with freshly made tortillas, cinnamon butter, and salsa to share. I ordered the Campechana de Mariscos, which was fresh, generously portioned, and perfect for sharing. We also had the Molcajete, and it was delicious! It came with a great mix of steak, chicken, chorizo, jumbo shrimp, nopal, and cheese. The portion was generous and easily enough for two people. Other dishes we ordered also included the pozole, chicken nachos, and lobster mac and cheese. Everything was delicious as well! The mac and cheese especially. For drinks, I tried the Golden Hour nonalcoholic cocktail, and unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend it. It tasted like watered-down ginger beer with no carbonation and only the faintest hint of pineapple. It was more on the bitter taste. Overall, this is a great restaurant for the ocean views and flavorful food. The portions are generous, and there's something for everyone on the menu. I ordered the filet medium but it was served more on the well side. I would not order this again. I also had two Lavender Linen cocktails that were great. My husband ordered the FRESH AVOCADO-SHRIMP SPRING ROLLS and the description was glass noodles, julienned vegetables, ginger soy and chili sauces, cilantro, mint, bell pepper garnish, roasted peanuts. He loved them. Normally, he eats spring rolls with peanut sauce but the sauces that accompanied the spring rolls were perfect. The outdoor setting is very romantic and not what you would expect from a downtown restaurant. We left at dusk but I'm sure it's spectacular at night. Service was spot-on. We were with a large party and our server was very accommodating; giving recommendations and double checking once items arrived that they were correct. I highly recommend trying the lavender linen cocktail and spring rolls if you're in the area.

The fried green tomatoes were wonderful with the shrimp on top and the pizza was generous and we were able to bring home leftovers to enjoy the next day. We also ordered the apricot tart for dessert which was light and creamy! The only negative thing was we were dining inside and it happened to be on a warm day so there wasn't much cross breeze inside and it was a bit warm, but other than that food and service was excellent.

Rarely do I walk away from a dining experience where the quality of service and quality of food fight to outshine one another, but this was one of those spots. Our server, a German gentleman, was the consummate professional- always friendly, never overstepping, and added such a warm dimension to our meal. The fried green tomatoes and the white beet appetizers were standouts. I especially loved the vinegary dressing on the greens of the beet dish. For mains, we got the leek olive potato pizza, the ribeye, and the wood fire poached halibut. The avocado chimichurri that accompanied the ribeye was the perfect balance, and the sautéed greens under the fish were savory with the right amount of bite. I also liked their selection of mocktails; the pink pony club was a particular standout. All this for $200 was a better price tag than I was expecting, but most importantly, it got the stamp of approval from my notoriously picky grandmother and uncle. This spot is worth the drive.

I opted to do a trio with the bahn mi, tip o' Argentina, and the garlic fries. The food was good I forgot to take a picture! The tip o' Argentina was solid with the garlic aioli and the chimmichurri perfectly complimenting the steak and the lettuce and tomato adding a little bit of freshness. The buns they use for all of their sliders are soft, slightly sweet, and don't fall apart while you're eating. The Bahn Mi was even better. I love pork but was a little skeptical about pulled pork on a slider riffing on the flavors of a bahn mi. To my surprise and delight, it tasted just like grilled Vietnamese pork, which was perfectly complimented by the fresh and pickled veggies and surprisingly hot jalapeño. Finally, I got the garlic fries which were a massive portion, crisp, and very garlicky. Everything was good and with such a large and customizable menu, I'd definitely return if I was in the area again. I also want to give a shout out to the bartender, Kelsey. I sat at the bar and her service was attentive and she was very knowledgeable about the menu. We got the opportunity to chat for a bit and I loved her vibe, so definitely consider sitting at the bar if you're dining solo or with a friend.

A slider, a salad, and a brussels sprouts side, no problem! As a person who likes variety, I thought it was a great menu. Of course, the menu is not the only part of the restaurant. Service was great, parking was easy (once we found the place - our GPS had us go to a different parking lot first), and the food tasted good. Would love to go again, would seek it out if I'm in town again.
