The New Moon has lots of the Chinese classics along with some more modern things. Good mix of Americanized and more traditional items. Prices may be the only complaint, but the portions kind of make up for these it seems. At lunch it wasn't that busy. It's not a big place, but there's enough room for plenty of enough tables inside. The menu has many of the so called Americanized favorites, and those looking for more traditional offerings can also find these. It's about $20 for an entree. Ouch. The good thing is the big portions. Kind of makes up for it. We got some of the things good for vegetarians. Has quite a lot to choose among. I got Spicy Firm Tofu With A Seasonal Green Vegetable. Good and the spiciness was hot enough. This was tossed in a light spicy brown sauce. As for the green vegetable, it was broccoli. There was plenty enough to take a bit home. I used to go here for lunch all the time but don't work in the area anymore. I was in the area and had to stop! They are only open until 5pm so I got 4 items to go as I love this place. I love the Montrose location, so after an early afternoon in the garment district, my friend and I popped in for lunch at this location. Now to be fair, this is a comparison of the Montrose location that I love. The open concept of seeing the food prep is nice in theory, however having the kitchen prep workers making eyes at me more than once was less than flattering and bordered on obnoxious and aggressive. You know when someone is looking at you, made for an annoying experience. The restroom is located down a long hall and you have to get a key to access it. Totally understandable... but again, another unpleasant feature. The chinese chicken salad is always a winner.. My friend ordered something the moo shu pork, it was not memorable... they do not prepare it at the table at this location. I'm a big fan of New Moon and will continue to support the other locations... but downtown, not a fan, won't be back. read more

Not sure how this place has good reviews. First the hot and sour soup tasted like feet. I couldn't eat it at all. The chowmein had a weird after taste. I'm not sure if this was coming from the bamboo shoots but both had them and I'm not a big fan of the canned bamboo shoots bc it literally always taste like feet. The kung pao chicken tasted like the meat was previously frozen. Very dry and had bo flavor. The orange chicken was just soggy. The only decent item was the stein beans but even this was lacking flavor. Also the price is very high for Chinese food. I've never paid over $20 for each dish that didn't taste good. Probably the worst Chinese I've had. Even though food wasn't the best their service was very good. After my review the mgr called to see if there was anything he can do to satisfy my order. I ordered Chinese Chicken Salad and Spicy Wings. Chinese Chicken Salad, I asked for extra salad dressing and received a little more than a teaspoon of dressing, you can see the very small container in the picture. For me what makes the Chinese Chicken Salad good is the dressing, so this was a waste of money, and to think I actually called the restaurant to request no peanuts and extra dressing for the salad, I also asked for all flats for the wings. They honored my request for no peanuts and all flats, but what I really needed was extra dressing. I ordered delivery through GrubHub, after placing my order, I received a message stating, the restaurant would take it from there and if I had any questions or concerns about my order to call the restaurant directly because they don't use GrubHub for delivery. Weird because I placed the order through GrubHub. I haven't decided if I would order from this restaurant again because I would want the Chinese Chicken Salad, but a teaspoon of dressing doesn't do it for me. I would definitely not order the wings again, absolutely no flavor or spice at all. It's a shame because the little bit of dressing I did receive for the salad was really good. I've been coming to The New Moon for at least 40 years, when it was a little place on Main St. At the time, l was dating a police officer, and that's where many of them hung out. Well, sadly, that relationship didn't last. However, my relationship with The New Moon is still going strong. Since I retired, l don't get there as much, but every so often, I have to have the Chinese chicken salad. I've had chicken salad from all over, and NONE can compare to or satisfy me like theirs does.
