Breakfast seems to be the go-to here as it was 12:30pm and most everyone was eating eggs and pancakes in some form. We looked over the menu. We live 5 minutes from here and have been wanting to stop in for sometime. We got lunch. I got a turkey rueben and some onion rings. My wife, not knowing what to get, got a buffalo chicken sandwich on a kaiser roll. The food was up quick. My wife started in on her sandwich but the chicken wasn't hot and the sandwich just fell apart. The chicken appeared to be two Tyson chicken tenders covered in lettuce and tomato. Not even really sauced with buffalo. My turkey rueben was decent. Not the most flavorful and seemed to lack thousand island dressing. If it was there, it wasn't noticeable. I've eaten here before, and their biscuits and gravy used to be really good. This time I ordered them to go and didn't realize there was a 10% to-go fee added to the order. I will start off by recognizing the staff here for being so nice and offering great service. Here's where I had to down star this review, One I understand that it's an old school spot on Brandon blvd. The bathroom in here was not clean and had some grime issues. Also the food itself was very bland the gyro meat didn't have much flavor and had chewy bits in the meat. The breakfast was just okay the eggs were cooked perfect and the sausage and gravy you could get by on but the sausage Patty tasted frozen and the grits had a funky taste to them im not sure if it was the cheese or the grits. We have been patrons of NY Diner for many years and have enjoyed the great food and service. Eggs cooked perfectly for this picky eater. However, during the past few months we noticed changes in service staff, new people being trained at the grill, etc. The past few times we have been in for breakfast or lunch we noticed the former cooks are no longer there and new people are cooking. Sadly, my eggs were snotty and the hash browns were raw and cold inside. Staff was informed. On my last visit the 'Anytime' was full of oil and the home fries were over-seasoned, and the eggs were snotty again. Drinks are not being refilled as in the past. We noticed fewer people in the diner, a bad sign. The menu prices have remained the same but the quality and atmosphere are not acceptable. In town to visit our son and attend a Rays baseball game; we were on the hunt for local cuisine and found this place. We were warmly greeted upon entering and were seated quickly. Our server was pleasant and very attentive. We love to support small local diners. Took family out for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. The place was not busy. Service was not slow bad but okay. My girls ordered the original gyro and the Philly cheesesteak. ... It came with your choice of sides. So my girls got some fries and coleslaw and I got some onion rings on the side. The gyro and the Philly cheesesteak both were good but my onion rings were burnt and my coleslaw tasted really bad. We took a bite of the coleslaw and never touched it again. I'm from Philly and this hits all the right notes for me. I always get the Pork Roll, Egg and Cheese on a bagel and it takes me right back up north. The service is also outstanding. On the weekends you might have to wait a little bit for a table but honestly it's 100% worth it. Good things come to those who wait. We came by to try after it changed owners. It was really cold so bring a sweater, several people were complaining but it did not seem to change. The new chef was saying it is her thirteenth day and her fault food was taking so long. We ordered veggie omlet no cheese but came with feta. They quickly remade and it was good. We also ordered chicken fried steak and gravy. It was fair and gravy was kind of bland. Coffee was good and kept full. Be sure to try the grilled blueberry muffin. Little diner with friendly service. Sunday morning breakfast and the place was packed. Their breakfast coffee was surprisingly pretty good, and not a typical donut-house flavor. I had the Greek breakfast skillet and hubby had country fried steak. Both were decent, although I didn't get my hash browns darkened as requested. Our waitress was great, checked on us frequently and asked the right questions (ie: our OJ has pulp, is that ok? How are the hasbrowns?) I didn't tell her they weren't darkened, since they were served under a bed of tomatoes onions gyro and 2 eggs, they weren't going to be crispy no matter if they were darkened. I went to this place on a weekend in the am. We waited maybe 15 minutes for a seat. It was well worth it. The place is setup like a Waffle House but that is only design. The staff was very welcoming. Sunday Breakfast. Second time here. First for breakfast. We arrived around 7:45am on a Sunday. Somewhat packed. Self seating... booths, tables and counter service available. There were about 5 two tops outside for seating. We chose a booth along the window. Clean and comfy. 50's dinner music played. Large menu with a variety to choose from. Very much a diner feel just missing the soda jerk, gals in Bobby socks and a couple of greasers . I started with a coffee ($2.25 free refills) and ordered the Redneck Benedict Skillet ($9.49) with my eggs over easy and a Short Stack Sweet Buttermilk pancake as a side($2.49) as I wanted to see if they are good enough to bring my 80 yr old dad all the way from Tampa cause pancakes are his jam! The meal was hot and very delicious. Pancakes were good however, maybe if it were my main meal, I would have experienced it hot or at least warm. We have been going to the New York Diner in Valrico for over 10 years and it has been our favorite local restaurant for breakfast. Laurie Conover was the owner when we started going there and she ran the restaurant very well. She sold the diner to her daughter and son-in-law but they ended up selling it back to her so they could pursue careers in law enforcement. Laurie again sold the restaurant but this time she sold it to one of her servers, Abby, and her husband, Jay. From there the service started to go downhill. Keep in mind we like everyone who works there including the servers we've had issues on service with. Of course, Betty Gilley and Laurie Conover are our favorites. Everyone no matter who they are or what their job is could always use improvement. They really have their act together and know how to multi-task while serving their customers. On one of our visits, we had a couple of friends with us. Our friend, Tina, ordered her meal ala carte but it was ordered to be eaten all at the same time together. She only received a portion of it and she also had no utensils. She had asked for utensils but it took a while. By the time she received the rest of her meal, the portion she received was cold. Tina pushed it back and told the server, Lisa, and said she didn't want it. About 3 or 4 weeks ago Darrell and I went to the New York Diner. When we sat down, we needed one set of utensils. Gabby was our server that day. We mentioned this to Gabby as we ordered our meals. I ordered 1 pancake and a side of ham. The syrup was brought to the table then Darrell's meal and my side of ham came. Darrell still needed a set of utensils. Eventually, everything came. My pancake was barely warm. We didn't say anything or complain but I was not happy. Last weekend we went to The New York Diner and the same exact thing happened, even at the same table but our server was Lisa. We ordered our breakfast and let Lisa know we needed another set of utensils. The drinks were served. Our orders were taken and again, we asked for another set of utensils. Darrell's order came and only my ham. We're still waiting for my pancake and a set of utensils. Darrell was quite upset and got up and went to our server Lisa who was at the register bs'ing. He loudly asked Lisa for a set of utensils and the rest of our order (my pancakes) which was sitting there waiting for her to bring to our table. The owner, Abby, came to our table with Lisa with the rest of our order but still no utensils. Abby wanted to know what was wrong. Darrell told her the food was cold now and he still didn't have any utensils and to take it back that he wasn't going to eat it. Abby told Darrell to calm down that she was there to help him. Abby said she'd take it off of our bill. We got up and went to the register still willing to pay for the meal that was prepared and Abby said you're good, no bill. Darrell and I went to the diner today, June 6, 2021. When I walked in, one of the owners, Abby, said she had two tables open to go ahead and sit down. I asked which tables Betty was working and Abby said to just sit where ever and Betty would wait on us. The owner's daughter brought us a menu and as we were waiting to have our order taken, Jay, the owner, leaned over the back of the bench and said he was not going to serve us because of Darrell blowing up about the pancake the week before. We got up and left. This is not the first time we've had issues there and not the only server but issues have happened more often with this same server. In my opinion, Abby tries to do too much but it affects her service. She has a hard time multitasking. Abby tries to wait tables, run the register, answer calls, and uber orders. In my opinion, Abby needs to concentrate on being a manager and seating customers, handling the register, incoming phone orders, and uber orders. After that, she should help where needed. When I was in my late teens and early 20's, I waitressed. I made sure each of my tables had everything they needed to enjoy their meal and each other. When they were done with something, I removed it from the table to give them space to relax so they to finish their meal or just visit after eating. I made sure their drinks were always full along with other server's tables. It's tricky to be attentive but not hovering. When I cleaned my tables I always made sure they were clean, re-set, and made sure the sugar, salt, and pepper were full. They say servers and former servers are the most critical to wait on. I'm critical but I overlook a lot and I am fair. It's sad to write this review. We have already had several friends state they have either stopped going there for the same reasons or will not go back there. Word of mouth is an important part of a business, especially a small locally owned business, and can make or break it. Super fast service, but only because food is pre-made sitting on the flat top. LOTS of flies flying around. Made my stomach turn. Food is ok, nothing to write home about. The country fried steak was the size of a piece of toast. Ordered extra gravy but didn't seem to get much anyways. We were told the gravy was from a can, and they only have sausage gravy on "special occasions" - not sure what that means... Only saving grace was the everything bagel, which tasted pretty good.
