Just finished a 3-night stay at The Newbury Boston., which we booked through Amex FHR. The good: location is fantastic, rooms are spotless, housekeeping is excellent, and staff is mostly helpful and friendly. The not-so-good: we booked a suite and were originally shown a room on the 11th floor which was very dark and faced a brick building. We requested another room and were moved to a much better room facing the park on the 3rd floor. Neither room was worth the $1k price point but at least the second room was an improvement. It should be noted the elevators are very slow and the wait was 5-10 minutes no matter the time of day. The bad: Contessa has almost zero vegan options... not even oatmeal which was odd. Even the acai bowl had milk in it! I ended up ordering a slice of focaccia, a laughable fruit plate (which was $20), and orange juice. Room service was no better in terms of option...one night I ordered the rigatoni marinara clearly stating that I am a vegan and it arrived an hour later covered in parmesan cheese. None of the above would have been a big deal at a $500-$600 price point, but at $1k per night our experience was disappointing. I doubt we'll stay at the Newbury again. read more

Just finished a three-night stay here. BEWARE!!!! Room was nice, bellman was nice, check in was fine, Contessa was good and atmosphere was charming. However, when we left, we were charged and additional $500.00 for a smoking fee in our room. AYFKM!!!??? First of all, neither of us have ever smoked or vaped. My boyfriend flew into Boston and he is a doctor and the director of the hospital department he works at. We both lead clean and healthy lifestyles, and this was totally offensive and accusing people of this is low class. We would never do something like this. The management here is piss poor. My boyfriend reached out to two managers, Amal and Kam, for two consecutive days (during his working hours) and neither of them returned his phone calls or emails nor wanted to resolve this. What a waste of time, energy and how unprofessional. They tried to tell us they have some sensor in the room that can detect smoking? Well guess what, whatever they are using is faulty and WRONG!!!! They wanted to sustain charges which speaks to how unprofessional and poorly run this hotel is. If you stay here good luck not being charged and additional $500.00 smoking fee when you don't smoke. It wasn't until my boyfriend became heated, which he rarely gets, with one of them she said she would drop the charge and we still have yet to see ANY kind of email crediting us back the $500.00 or any kind of response apologizing for doing what they just did to us. We come to Boston often and before this happened, we thought we might be returning here again but we are all set. We will be supporting other 5-star locations who have TRAINED PROFESSIONAL management, rooms that don't have faulty bs smoking alarms, and put our money where we are respected and treated right. If this happens to you, best of luck! Maybe this is one of their moves to make some extra money. read more

I love this hotel! The location, attention to art, restaurants and the staff are absolutely lovely. I wouldn't change a thing except to mention that we have stayed at this property a dozen or so times for a night or a week and the hotel doesn't seem to track repeat customers. For a hotel of this status I'm surprised they dont acknowledge repeat customers. "Welcome Back" or a different note in the room than the formulaic one from guest services. There are many hotel options in Boston which we have also enjoyed that seem to pay closer attention to their repeat guests. Just a thought. We will continue to return regardless :) read more

This hotel is nice and everything but something we could not ignore is the fact that our room was right next to a supply closet, and periodically throughout the day, maintenance was in there thunderously banging on the wall with all their might. No idea what they were doing in there, but it sounded as if they were throwing their bodies against the wall at full force and we thought our TV was going to come off its hinges. The whole room shook, and the wall was twitching like a Tom and Jerry cartoon. Sometimes this occurred early in the morning and woke us up. Just be mindful of that if you stay here. read more

I'm trying to like this place because of the location and because my spouse does, but they make it hard. From $20+ eggs that require a $16 side order of bacon, to the uncomfortable chairs in the library (those at the table in particular) to the idiotic TV remote with a laser cursor that keeps misfiring to the "studio suite" that is in no way a suite and simply a deluxe room, there are a lot of challenges. The location is great and the bellmen solid. The front desk is meh. The valet parking was a mess, the texting system to request your car didn't work, and they charged me $170 to park for two hours. I keep looking for a better alternative and have trouble finding it read more

I truly cannot believe this hotel is rated as 5 stars. From the very first night, I noticed significant mildew (possibly black mold) all over the shower. I immediately reported it to the concierge, who assured me it would be taken care of. When we returned later, the shower had clearly just been drenched in bleach -- the chemical smell was overpowering -- yet the mold was still visibly present. We went back downstairs to show photos, and they said a manager would come up to address it. No manager ever came -- only a very kind housekeeper who genuinely tried her best, but even she couldn't remove the deep-set grime and mold. To make things worse, I also found a large black hair stuck to one of the body wash towels in the shower that was supposedly fresh. I've only showered once -- and with a hair cap on the entire time -- so there's absolutely no explanation other than poor cleaning. As if that wasn't enough, when my friend and I (two young women) were walking back to the hotel at night, two Newbury bellhops -- in full uniform -- approached us on the street and made us extremely uncomfortable by asking where we were headed. This is not the kind of behavior anyone should experience, let alone at a so-called "luxury" hotel that costs thousands of dollars per stay. Contessa, the hotel restaurant, was also overpriced and painfully average. Overall, this experience was unhygienic, unprofessional, and unsafe. I've attached photos as proof of the mold and cleanliness issues. I genuinely hope management reaches out to make this right -- because this was nowhere near the level of service, safety, or sanitation that a 5-star hotel should provide. read more

I was in town for business and was staying here and I have to say just an amazing stay everything from the bellman to the front desk and rest of staff just super friendly and very nice , always asking if you need any help or have questions and giving recommendations. As for the actual room my room was nice and the beds really comfortable as well as overlooking the park next door. Also the location is amazing whether you are wanting to shop walk in the huge park right across the street and as well as places to eat all within a short walk of the hotel. Overall an absolute great hotel and safe as well. read more

Adding to my review from 4/19/2026. Management did reach out to me, offered a dinner at the hotel's bar. That was it. The dinner was not great. Overall impression of the stay is MEH. The room still smelled like a dog. Also I paid the same price for a no-view room as others with a great view of the city, or the lovely park. Cleanliness poor as I kept finding random long hairs on the sofa and sofa pillows. Very noisy at night. The bed was comfortable. Sofa not comfortable. No coffee available early in the morning for us to have prior to our morning flight out of Boston. Very disappointing overall and I am sorry we stayed there. read more

This hotel was simply fabulous. All them employees were friendly and very professional. The standard suite, while lacking any real views, was nevertheless wonderful in both cleanliness and size. Seriously, from the valets to the bell hops to the front desk to the room service staff, everyone shined brightly. And the room service, which came from the Street Bar, was almost universally delicious (the only negative was the salty bacon. The deviled eggs? Devine. The crab cakes? Very good. The shrimp cocktail? Fresh and delicious. The eggs and hash browns? Tantalizing. And the fact that you can get room service 24-7 made it even better. While this hotel is pricey, it is worth every penny! read more

We booked one night at the Boston Newbury Hotel to attend a Red Sox game. When we arrived at 4pm we were told the room wasn't ready, although check in was 3pm. After insisting that they honor our reservation, we were eventually given a room. An assistant manager offered to show us to our room on the third floor. We followed her to the elevator but she didn't know how to find the room. After wasting thirty minutes, we finally got to our room which was actually very nice. The hotel is lovely but the staff is poorly trained. Great location, but probably wouldn't return. read more

Fantastic hotel!! We were in town before the holidays for some shopping and sightseeing and made a reservation here. We had the absolute BEST customer service and overall experience at any hotel ever. I never stayed at this hotel. But the kindness they showed to myself and my children on a cold Christmas Eve night makes me want to stay here when I come back to visit the city. Best location in Boston! The Newbury is conveniently located near shops, restaurants, and the Boston Public Garden. The staff is incredibly welcoming and accommodating. The hotel is luxurious, but not stuffy. The bed was super soft and the room was so quiet that we felt like we were the only guests there! Breakfast in the restaurant was terrific (try the pancakes or the French toast.) I will never stay in a different Boston hotel again. We had such a positive experience with the Newbury! read more

Loved my stay here. The staff was soo friendly and service was top notch. They would text me everyday and asked if I needed anything which I've never seen a hotel do before. I asked for makeup wipes once and they brought some up right away. The room was also really nice. The bed was comfy and the TV selection was good. The hotel was also in a central location on Newbury street right next to a bunch of shops and restaurants and across from the main garden in Boston. read more

I am writing this review from my GORGEOUS park view suite, which I received as a complimentary upgrade for no other reason, it seems, than just that this place is maniacal about providing amazing service. I love everything about this hotel. My room (fabulous, clean, quiet, perfect). The friendly doorman. The delightful staff. The plush, cozy private guest "library," which is a perfect place to curl up with a good book and a cup of tea. The wood-paneled bar overlooking Newbury Street. The minibar. The bedding. Two things I don't like: 1. With so many wonderful amenities, it's hard to decide where I want to spend my time (room? bar? library?). 2. I have to check out and go home tomorrow, when, really, I'd rather just live here. My absolute favorite hotel in Boston, and I've stayed in a bunch. read more

We stayed here for 3 nights and it was very nice. The bar was great and the people there were so nice. The only thing that was disappointing was the library. It's advertised as exclusively for guests but it's completely false. They use the room as an overflow from the bar. It's very loud and crowded. I'm ok with it but don't advertise as something it's not. It was the reason I picked this hotel. I was looking forward to sitting in a quiet room sipping a cocktail. We recently stayed at the Newbury Boston and were disappointed for the price point. Although the hotel is perfectly located and beautiful, we felt the staff to be less than expected. We especially did not like the half hour wait to retrieve our car from the valet. The staff in the lobby were also conversing with each other often ignoring the guests ( not holding doors open/greeting them). On our many trips to Boston , we have stayed at the Four Seasons (one dalton) and have absolutely loved it. We also stayed at the Langham hotel which is also much better than the Newbury. read more

This review is for their afternoon tea. I did not stay at the hotel so it is not a review of the hotel itself. I have been torn about how to rate their tea because while the food was outstanding our waiter made the experience awful. The management did their best to fix the situation but he was just so rude. First it started when we both ordered the same tea. He asked us why we didn't tell him not to waste his paper writing it down and walked away annoyed. We tried to laugh it off. Next came the sandwich situation. He gave us a plate of sandwiches to split. But he had dropped some of it on the floor. He told us we needed to split the tiny sandwiches between us and argued with me when I stated I've never seen that done. Usually there are two of each. He became angry and stormed off. Luckily the manager was nearby and corrected the situation but it really made things unpleasant. After that the waiter brought out the scones. He also brought out the panna cotta. He did not give anyone the clotted cream for their scones. I looked at all the tables. Everyone was spreading the panna cotta on their scones. Finally a manager brought some cream out to one of the tables. The waiter asked me if I liked the scones. I said yes and he mumbled "well I'm glad you like something." Meanwhile I saw managers called over to two different tables that still hadn't even been given their tea but had been brought desserts. The desserts were outstanding. Overall the food was excellent but with the waiter so rude and misinformed I'm not sure I would go back. I'm so disappointed because I love going to tea and used to go to the ritz and taj all the time. I really wanted to love this. I had been looking forward to it all week and was left feeling awful. Some general advice: 1) give the waiters a tray to carry things on. Our waiter kept carrying 8 sandwich trays at a time and a lot wound up on the ground. 2) if a staff member is rude to a table maybe switch them to another spot so they get a fresh start. 3) those tea pots are really big which is great except the tea gets cold fast. Generally the waiter at some point walks around offering to add some hot water. That would be a good idea. read more

This is a review for the valet parking. My wife and I came to an event here (which was lovely!) and valeted our car. When the car came back there was a PARKING TICKET on it! They assured us that it would be paid right away -- almost 3 weeks later several phone calls has led to nothing -- the ticket still remains unpaid and likely we will have to pay for it ourselves. What a lovely hotel! This was recommended by a speaker that travels through Boston! What a great find! We had a view of the park that was exquisite! Valet was wonderful both at arrival and departure. We were offered waters at arrival and there are waters available at all times in a cute sitting room off the lobby. Nespresso coffee machine on the room is a nice touch. Local shopping and walking is great! Make reservations at The Contessa on the roof. It's a must! Best calamari I've ever had- cooked in a rice flour. I recommend this hotel and will visit again! There are not enough stars for my rating of this magnificent gem in the middle of the city. I got stuck in Boston on my way out to Nairobi for a safari because I lost my passport. So I had to stay in Boston until I could figure out my next steps and American Express recommended this place. Needless to say I was distraught from the passport situation but from the moment my Uber arrived and Patrick took my luggage, I felt like everything was going to be ok. Leticia gave me the best room for my rate and made sure I was super comfortable. When I woke up the next morning and went downstairs, JP at the concierge desk already had a game plan. He found an Emergency passport office for me to go to on Monday and helped me figure out everything I needed. He and David also filed lost item claims at Logan airport and with JetBlue for the passport. We had a plan but we couldn't do anything until Monday so the Newbury became my home. It was the best home away from home a guy could have. The library and the coffee shop on the first floor have that old school library feel and smell and were the perfect places to work. And then there is the Contessa............. I ate here for breakfast, lunch and dinner! I love food and I never had to leave this hotel to eat. The brunch was amazing, the drinks were exquisite! The bartender Chris introduced me to my new favorite drink, "The Paper Plane." I visited Patrick often. He also knows where all of the good night watering holes are. I only sat at Ledi's tables when eating. He was good at pushing me to try new things and helped me pair wines with Suzy, the sommelier. Then I can't forget Alicia who was so kind and made so many key cards for me because.....you know.....I lose things. In summary I was a consultant for several years, traveled the world and have stayed at the best hotels. This was the best hotel experience of my life! Exceptional service overall, attentive concierge, housekeeping, valet and engineering staff coupled with a high quality renovation added up to a very enjoyable stay over the past holiday weekend. Minor quibbles: -our fireplace suite had one malfunctioning phone, three lightbulbs out, and a strange looking, ominous yellow stain on the rug in the bedroom area--not what I expect in a high-end hotel redone as recently as this one -rooftop restaurant (Contessa) did not live up the all the hype, especially considering the eye watering tab for X Mas day dinner.. -neither our daughter's room nor our park view fireplace suite had a bathtub/soaking tub; understandable in the "regular" room but a bit of a let down in a suite; the walk in shower was nice enough but again nothing out of the ordinary -the overall feel of the rooms is somehow neither classic/comfortable nor truly modern; granted, beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, but for my taste, the finished product borders on bland/neutral, albeit with a level of quality commensurate with the type of hotel -shortly after check in we discovered that the sofa in the living room was not a pull out as originally booked--the well intentioned upgrade from an interior suite to a corner fireplace suite thus resulted in us either having to change rooms or renting an additional room for our daughters. As the family had already checked in, I opted for the latter--said process, while seamless, came at a steeper price tag than desired. Considering the upgrade "backfired" on us, more of an accommodation would have been appreciated... Net, net: a "five star" experience in spite of room for (some) improvements. read more

My wife and I attempted to have a drink at the Newbury's "street bar" yesterday because we have a gift certificate and happened to be nearby. it was about 430 and there were plenty of open tables. We were told that the bar was available just for hotel guests. Wow! It wasn't a private party...just the hotel management saying You John Q. Public are not allowed in our establishment. We were a bit surprised and disappointed. We will use the gift card eventually but unlikely to EVER patronize this place again. PS stayed here for wedding night in 1986 and have had many many breakfasts lunches and events at the place over the years. BTW Contessa very overrated! read more
