This is my favorite coffee shop. Snickers frappe is my favorite treat, but they also have refillable coffee and tea for 3-4$. Service is great baristas are friendly, WiFi goes down occasionally. The croissants are good but otherwise their baked goods are a limited selection, but their specialty drinks are amazing. They also have board games, beer, wine and a carafe of mimosa which makes it a great laid back hang out place. The walls are giant chalk boards which is good for study groups, but also for doodling and seeing new art every day. read more

Finally checked out this cafe after confirming with friend that it is an appropriate place for studying. I was first confused by the picture thinking that it might be more like an event venue. It's both. When I went in around 5pm on a weekday it was mostly filled with students cramming for finals or gaming. There're tons of space for all sorts of functions, groups large and small and individuals. My cafe au lait was standard and solid. This place is literally amazing. 10/10 my favorite coffeeshop ever. It's in a great location (next to three food restaurants and a rooftop bar). There's a parking lot behind the strip of shops. Lots of options of coffees, teas, and pastries! I'm addicted to sugar and coffee so I always go with a carmel frappe with an extra shot. When I just want to chill I get a large raspberry hibiscus tea which comes with unlimited refills. Its the perfect place to study; they play calm music, have lots of plugs and a nice study nook in the back. Plus they close at midnight every day which is perfect for night owls like me. Its the perfect place to meet and hang out with friends; theres a lovely patio in the back with string lights that light up at night. Also pet-friendly which is a plus! If you're looking for a fun place to get some work done or play a few games with some friends (that's right because they have tons of board games available!) this is the place for you!! read more

Oh my God! I freaking love the Nook. This was my first visit and it was nothing short of amazing. It's located in a shopping strip right across from the university and the place is completely filled with bar tops, tables, nook desks, a lounge area and a patio. And don't even get me started on the plethora of coffee selections! I was a kid in a candy store staring at the menu, and the smell, OH the smell of the shop is absolutely incredible. It smelled like a roasted pecans and hazelnut. The baristas were incredible, full of life, cracked a couple of jokes & they were extremely helpful in helping a few of us make drink selections. They were very descriptive in the way they described the drinks. I ended up with a Snickers latte which *full disclaimer* has nuts in it! Oh, it was amazing. I sat at one of the communal desks, which come equipped with AMPLE amount plug-ins and mini desk lights. They've also got plenty of books and games to enjoy! The Nook is a really chill studying spot on campus, you can't really go wrong with hanging out or studying here. I've gotten their lattes and they're probably a 3/5. I've gotten lukewarm lattes before :-( I don't know how its possible. They have a WIDE selection of drinks though so it honestly makes up for it. You can try a different latte or tea every time you come here and you'd probably still have a lot more to try. You go up, order your drink, and you pick it up at the counter.. pretty simple. I've never really gotten a smile or a thank you from any of the employees here before.... and it kinda makes me sad... but I'm here to do my work so idrc. There's a lot of seats and outlets everywhere so it's very laptop friendly! They also have a super cute patio in the back with some shaded areas. What's not to love, coffee, wine, beer and mimosas. Great atmosphere, not quiet but not too loud either. Great amount of seats and outlets and no problems with Wifi. This is of course a College Coffee shop so of course it is a going to be filled with students and parking is tough, not out this world, but tough. I came on a Tuesday at 2pm and found two parking spots in the parking lot, left after my Cortado with coconut, and there were two more parking spots. Using this as an example that it is possible to get parking, however, it is difficult. One my favorite places to get work done, especially during the SUMMER TIME!!!! I heard about The Nook after reading an Eater article about 14 coffee shops to visit in Houston. It definitely lives up to its name; little cubbies and ill-planned walls create cute spaces to seat your young UH student. The barista was very kind to let me enjoy happy hour 15 minutes early. I don't think I've had craft beer as cheap as this cafe. And why not? It's a hip place holding an ever revolving generation of coin-strapped undergrads. They have a great coffee menu and some pastries (they are obviously not known for their sweets) but they have tons of seating and great wall art to keep you distracted. I wanted so desperately to like this place - the only non-Starbucks on UH campus (essentially) coffee house. Yay independent businesses, right? But I just left the place in a huff and will not be back.The place itself is fine I suppose - they are trying to make it a cute, comfortable place to chill - lots of comfy chairs, couches, etc. But if you are going to be an on-campus coffee house, you NEED, capital NEED working, reliable internet. I'd be totally willing to cut them some slack, but the way they responded to my enquiry about the internet not working was "Oh... yeah... we really should get a better router." That's it. Not "We are so sorry, we are working to fix that ASAP." Nothing of the kind. They KNOW their internet is crap, haven't done anything about it, don't tell you before hand (have a sign apologizing for the inconvenience, at least) and don't seem too concerned that their customers are having trouble. None of the employees were any help beyond "Try again?" They were also playing the worst music I think I've ever heard in a coffee shop - sounded like an online generic 80s station - literally played "We Got the Beat" way too loudly and in a completely non-ironic way. Come on y'all - try harder! Like I said, I left, before I had even finished my drink - which was totally "meh", by the way. I arrived at UH in summer 2014, and while the school has many lovely qualities, it was then a virtual Dante's Inferno for caffeine addicts such as self. Save for a few scattered Starbucks of (bless them) mediocre-at-best quality, there was no place for a good old afternoon caffeine boost. And this was at a university, where it's well known that students and faculty alike have an unhealthy dependency on coffee. Shortly after my arrival, The Nook entered the scene, and it was as though my prayers had been answered. They serve great espresso drinks as well as tasty pastries and snacks, all in an environs that are conducive to academic work in the way good cafes are (i.e., not quiet but also not crazy-hectic and with good access to outlets and wifi). NB: They just started serving donuts from Glazed, and if I have too many more of them I may soon be supplementing my coffee addiction with a donut dependency. As a 2010 UH alum I didn't have these neat shops that the campus now has. I came up here to find a new place to study. And I'm glad I came. I went for a straight cappuccino however they usually make it. Whole milk I believe. Fantastic cappuccino. Well balanced. I came on a Sunday, parked on the side lot. On weekends there's no need for a parking pass. Atmosphere was busy but not overly loud. The music was heard, but it was not overpowering. One downside are the tables. They're not flat, they have frames. It's as if they took cabinets and cut them in half, and made them into tables. Makes spreading out your study materials tricky at times. But this is not enough to take away a star. I will be back. Go COOGS! read more

The coffee is comparable to Cougar Grounds on campus, if not a bit better! Why go to Starbucks when you have The Nook Cafe on campus? Baristas are always nice and always have a great attitude. Hipster vibe with lots of options in terms of coffee, alcohol, food, and seating. Their birthday cake latte is always my go-to drink, they always make it very well. Their sizes are comparable to Starbucks, but their largest size is a bit smaller than a venti. Their cortado is good and they have in house drinks in their own personalized mugs also. They have standard coffee along with speciality drinks that are a bit pricier. They offer a decent selection of beer, red wine, and white wines. They also have a nice selection of sweet and savory food items. Muffins and cupcakes are always available. They also offer macarons, which is a first on campus, with different flavors everyday. It's convenient if you're on campus craving a treat or two. Their croissants are not on the shy side in regards to size and content either. They are filling with a lot of content inside, usually sausage and cheese or ham and cheese. Really good for a small lunch or snack. Seating is readily available. The place is true to its name with little "nooks" and crannies for studying and hanging out. It's really a very cozy place people can go to and have a bit of privacy studying. They also have outlets at almost every seat, which is literally what every college kid dreams of. God bless you, Nook Cafe. Another plus: they are open till midnight on the weekdays for your late night sessions and cravings. They also usually have performances and acts in the evenings also. I can imagine a place like this in midtown but good thing UH a has claimed possession of this wonderful cafe. Great location, atmosphere, service, and coffee. Highly recommended! read more

Unfortunately as one ages, one feels more and more intimidation entering hipster coffee shops replete with young college students too enamored with their unique music selections and pseudointellectual discussions of Nietzsche to understand the crushing reality that awaits: meager employment opportunities, bills, mortgages, etcetc. Since I chose the cliche path of life-long schooling (ie becoming a physician), I'm drawn to these locations to pursue my sad reality of constantly studying for the next certification exam, qualifiying exam, oral exam, recertification exam... (pass the gun please). Having moved back here from the East Coast, Nook was truly a treasure of a find. From my time in NYC to London, I haven't yet seen a coffee shop with walls donning chalkboards to allow students to scribble, quote, or even promote local events (some of the art is pretty damn impressive, a further reminder of the multitude of talents I severely lack, unless you consider memorizing tons of useless facts - ie medical school - a talent). The coffee shop is teeming on ends with young hipsters, some in sweatpants (take that George Costanza...sigh..a reference few even get these days!), others in vintage, all eagerly chatting, cranking out papers, and enjoying all to me that was the greatness of a liberal arts undergraduate education (sigh, I miss you NYU). To me, coffee shops MUST have the following: late hours (open till midnight), hip music that makes me want to get some strange tattoo (definitely, no Usher here thank you), good lighting, adequate and varied seating (nooks, tables, couches galore), and outlets (shame on you starbucks you corporate bitch for leaving this out in your rush to give us free WIFI). Pair this with unique blends - including Caphin - and affordable brews, and with additional treats ranging from pastries to Macaroons, and you've got a real winner! Parking is tight, but thankfully it is open to the public (not requiring "visitor" parking). The staff is super friendly, sporting thick beards, esoteric tattoos on forearms, and European hats...so what more could you ask for? And alcohol + reliable WIFI! (Did I mention alcohol?!) Ultimately, as I sit here with good back support (get ready hipsters for the lower back pain we all the 30s), good vibes, chirping conversation, and the thick aroma of fresh brew (from Katz I believe), this place stands alongside Inversion (better seating here), and Antidote as a premier coffee shop in the city. read more

Thursday night is the for night live music and wine specials. The pitchers of mimosas are pretty damn good and there is always a beer that will tickle your taste buds. Of course you can get lattes, cappuccinos and cupcakes, croissants and macarons. The kids behind the counters are never act put off when I can't decide what to order. My wife and I stopped by here to look for a place to hangout before our play at the Alley Theatre @ UH. If I were the still a student at UH the location would be great! It is almost right across the street from the main UC. We both had Italian sodas with almond syrup (hard to mess up) and an oatmeal cookie. If I were to review those things, I'd call them just right for a quick snack. However, their menu looked very extensive which I'd be willing to come back and try some more items. The design of the place is what you'd expect for a college coffee/tea venue. Personally, I'd have a hard time studying at this place because I'd think they get real busy and noisy during peak hours, but definitely a place to go when you need a break. I was so glad when this place opened up! Although there is the student run cougar grounds, and starbucks, this place has them beat. Mostly because it has the coffee shop environment where you can study. This place can be kind of loud, so if you need silence to study, this probably is not your place. My favorite place to study on campus! Peak times are mid day so I would avoid the afternoon. I have trouble finding a spot to study, but a spot opens up when I hang around a little bit. The fresh-squeezed orange juice here is SO GOOD. I almost never drink OJ because I hate the fake taste of OJ brands and even most "fresh squeezed" OJ. But the Nook somehow makes it taste exactly like oranges in a cup. Happiness. Their lattes are also great; I always get them when I'm studying here. Speaking of which, there is lots of desk space and outlets; it's furnished with the intention of catering to students (there are also several overstuffed couches and a patio area out back!). The music is fine--not too loud. The atmosphere is very relaxed. When I started my first semester on campus at the University of Houston, I was dying to find a great coffeeshop with good coffee, delicious pastries and a good vibe. Thankfully I came across The Nook Cafe, and I am definitely so thankful! I LOVE the atmosphere of this place. Super laid back, great vibes, fairly quiet (lots of people working) and a really cool place to sit back & relax. There's TONS of seating in here. They have regular table tops, bar tops, comfy chairs & couches, and some neat workstation areas with lamps & plugs. It's really one of the best study/get sh*t done places on campus (if you're trying to avoid Starbucks/library). There's plugs everywhere (PRAISE) & they even have some cool board games, lots of books to read, and cool chalkboard walls for your drawing/writing/working pleasure. The drink menu is extensive. Great coffee & teas, drip, lattes, pour overs, french press, fresh brewed tea, iced drinks, EVERYTHING. They even have wine & beer for that brewskie after a long test. There selection is just so huge, which I really like about them. Coffee is also delicious. In the mornings they have at least four different drips hot & ready. They also have a great selection of pastries - muffins, donuts, croissants, etc. along with a few other snack goodies - fruit, cookies, etc. One thing I LOVE about this place is the service. The employees/baristas are incredibly kind. They always have a smile on their face & really make you feel welcome. They work efficiently/quickly. The place is pretty clean & they have two clean bathrooms (perk on campus compared to some bathrooms). Would definitely recommend you make this your new study spot. P.S. LOVE THIS PLACE! Studied here yesterday and what can I say, they have everything. Tons of outlets, tables, chairs, and even couches. Bathroom facilities are also very clean and I felt pretty comfortable using them! Ladies were very nice. I got a chai latte and it was pretty good. Nothing to complain about. If there is one thing to note is that if you're here to study, either you must be good at canceling out noise or have your earphones on you. The music is pretty loud and pretty darn catchy. I found myself singing along to a lot of the songs while I was there! Right before I left, they stopped the music and played a movie, which was even more distracting lol!! But all is good. This is my go-to cafe in Houston (not just on campus!). SERVICE and ATMOSPHERE The baristas are extremely friendly, and have great memories (I think they knew my usual after 3 or 4 visits!). They're also never short on suggestions or ideas (especially when it comes to interesting juice combinations), so if you don't have a usual, you can try something new and unique every time. The atmosphere is everything you could ask for in a study spot. Just enough noise, interesting music, clean bathrooms, LOTS of outlets, solid wi-fi and chilly (you won't fall asleep! But pro-tip, if you're a Houstonian who loves heat and humidity, you may want to bring a jacket). FOOD and DRINK Good coffee on brew (they use Katz's Coffee) and the espresso rarely has that burned taste. If I have one complaint, it's got to be those _____ and cheese croissants -- they tend to be 90% croissant, 10% whatever is supposed to be in it. My usual is the hazelnut frappe, but I tend to use my free drink reward on the Rattlesnake Frappe -- delicious blend of different syrups and espresso. I'm a UH alumni; went there years ago. At that time, we didn't have cool places like this to study or get schoolwork done. I went with a friend and we enjoyed the Nook! I ordered and almond joy frap with coconut milk. It was delicious! The staff was friendly. Our drinks came out quickly. There are outlets to charge electronics at every seat, which makes it a convenient location for studying. I didn't bother to read all of the reviews since I figured the average rating of this place is what drew me to check out this coffee shop so I could get some work done. When my gps started leading me to drive through the UH campus, the first thought that came into my head was "Dang it! Am I going to a campus coffee shop? Why didn't I read further into the reviews? There's going to be a bunch of students and crowded!" I started debating whether or not to turn back home but ended up committing and parking my car in the small lot. The location is quite interesting! It's like a random strip mall where there's a pinks pizza and bullritos that got built right near the campus. If I was a student this would have been a win. The cashier was welcoming and gave me recommendations which led me to choose the almond joy frappe. This drink didn't necessarily taste like almond joy but I enjoyed the flavors. They have so many spaces inside and free wifi, it was wonderful. There's even an outdoor patio area with chairs, tables, picnic table and patio sofas. Since the weather was nice, I worked outside. It is a lot noisier than inside but it's also a great place for people to catch up outside without feeling pressured to use inside voices and be quiet if inside. I wore headphones and listened to music so it didn't bother me. I enjoyed my time there and plan on coming back. read more

Study space was also a very nice addition to the place but I would suggest making that space bigger with more electrical plugs. It was really hard to find a spot to study cause the space was so limited. Their iced americanos were exactly on point. They made it just the way I liked it. Smooth and dark. It didn't taste like any of those watered down shit that they provide in other coffee shops. I can vouch that they probably have one of the best iced americanos in HTX in my opinion. Their specialty lattes were also really good that had the largest section on their menu. I basically tried a different latte every time I came by and I finally was hooked on this one latte I already forgot the name of but it was sooo good.
