As a Goblin I have eaten many old soups out of a dirty cauldron, but Mid-Gumbo tastes like how Jack Harlow must feel waking up and telling himself he got blacker. Concerning the food (and Jack Harlow), it's about more than just lack of seasoning.

They are also expensive and just okay. The interior looks like a Goblin outpost in a dark castle, so in that respect, they get points. There's a fire feature if you appreciate burning down the countryside like me. Sure, you can get some charred brussels sprouts in a balsamic glaze with feta and bacon to kick off the hang. But 2/3 times, the brussels sprouts came out as black as my Goblin heart. I like some smoke and char, but it tasted bitter and underwhelming. Chips and Gauc are serviceable, but don't come running. This place made more sense before exorbitant food cost increases across the greater Seattle area writ large. Let me paint one final picture for the real ones, "Matador is essentially Mexican Olive Garden with low lighting and candles". If you are okay with that, pull up a chair. In a world where four Goblins used to eat for $80, it made sense. No amount of sizzling fajita flare can change my mind.

However, there was a bench inside where we sat to enjoy our coffee, which worked out since I love having coffee at cafes, especially in their cute mugs. The quality of the coffee was amazing easily one of the best I've had in Seattle. I also appreciated their efficient setup: the barista takes your order and makes it at the same time. You might have to wait in line a bit longer, but you get your coffee right away instead of waiting for your name to be called later. Just be prepared for a line, but it's totally worth it!

You could tell the proteins were marinated and cared for before being added in, instead of just tossed into a noodle dish as an afterthought like I've experienced at other places. It made such a difference. The mango trout was such a standout. The trout was a great size, and the mango was firm, crunchy, and fresh, which I absolutely loved. The banh xeo was also delicious: thin, crispy, and served with fresh herbs that weren't wilted at all. The nuoc mam was perfect too, not overly sweet, light, balanced, and just right with the banh xeo. Portions were generous, and we ended up taking food home because we couldn't finish everything. That is always a good problem to have. Most of all, I really want to mention how welcoming the service was. Lynda took such great care of us and made the whole experience feel warm and personal. You can tell this is a place with heart behind it, and I truly hope more people in the neighborhood give it a try.
