My Lyft driver had a slight bit of difficulty identifying the building when we arrived, as the entrance is under construction. Check in was a breeze. The Woodstock typewriter near the check in desk is a nice touch of whimsy. My room had plain white walls, not the wallpaper (can't recall the fancy word for it) that's advertised as adding to the "Euro charm" of the place. Still, the room was cozy and the bathroom especially lovely. There were a Keurig and a safe, two things I look for, and also a refrigerator. Comfortable bed and bedding. No room service, but with such a perfect location, you can Door Dash from anywhere - I received my order from nearby Flavorture with perfect timing. The location is not only great for access to Adams Morgan, Dupont, and upper Northwest, it was quite convenient for a ride out to Tysons the next day. Had a great conversation with the young lady driving. In a few short minutes we were passing the Kennedy Center on our way out of the district, and we arrived at Tysons in a little over 20 minutes. Very pleasant drive on a Saturday. Later that night, I walked back to the hotel from Dupont with friends. The walk from Dupont is slightly uphill. Whew. We chilled for a bit near the fireplace downstairs, which was nice. The worst thing that happened during my stay was that I woke up at 2 a.m. concerned that I had expired and rather than having met my maker, had arrived in a red and fiery place. My room was 86 degrees! In a half awake frenzy, I tried turning the heat down, but soon remembered I'd already turned it down and the thermostat must have been malfunctioning. I attempted to turn it off completely, but it kept running. When I called the desk for help, I was told that the only thing they could do is have someone check it out in the morning. I worked frantically to get the windows open and had some difficulty, but managed. The room eventually cooled and the heat eventually shut off. No one ever came to look at the thermostat; I just left it on 65 for the remainder of my stay. It was never cold in the room in spite of the thermostat being so low. The next morning flurries were falling, and I appreciated my view of the street. I appreciated the late check out time - noon - and that absolutely no one knocked on my door or called up; I left my room at 12:30. I was told that breakfast is European style - continental with a few breakfast meats. I passed, but checked out the dining area before leaving. It's cute, and what really caught my eye was the outdoor seating - made me consider staying again in the spring or summer. I especially enjoyed my walk to Adams Morgan. My route took me through part of residential Kalorama, past the park, and just like that, I was in Adams Morgan. Even carrying my luggage, it was a pleasant walk on mostly level terrain. I would stay at the Normandy again. Location, location, location.

I loved my stay here. I was in the area for a conference but the conference hotel was too expensive so I stayed here which was a few blocks away. It's a boutique hotel so it's small and quiet but service is top notch. They really pay attention to details here. It's also nicely decorated. They do a wine hour where they offer a free red or white wine in the lobby, and you can add on an $18 breakfast although I didn't think it was worth the price given the limited options. This will probably be my go to hotel whenever I need to be in DC.

Great boutique hotel, comfortable, great neighborhood, FREE PARKING, centrally located... I was a little nervous when I booked this hotel, because boutique hotels are sometimes hit or miss. This hotel was definitely a charm! The day of my check-in, my flights were delayed due to weather and there was a chance of missing my connecting flight. Worried, because I had pre-paid for my room, I contacted the hotel and spoke with front desk clerk Shawn, who was very helpful in assisting me and giving me options. He assured me all will be fine and displayed a sense of empathy which is hard for people to do these days. I was very grateful for his assistance. Turns out I made my flight, and checked in later that evening. When I arrived, I was instantly impressed! Neighborhood: Beautiful upscale neighborhood! Clean and safe. Centrally located. The hotel is nestled between a residential neighborhood where many diplomats live/work. Parking: Many hotels charge at least $40-$60 a day for parking. If you are familiar with city street parking... You just have to read the signs! The signs in the neighborhood state 2hr parking limit Mon-Fri 7a-8:30p. Meaning after 8:30pm up to 9a you can park on the streets. It's a safe neighborhood and I had absolutely no issues parking in the area. Hotel: If you are looking for the Ritz Carlton... Then stay at the Ritz Carlton! This hotel is a charming boutique hotel. Its older, but you can tell they keep up with the maintenance. I reserved a deluxe queen sized room. I stayed in room 505, and later changed to room 507. The rooms are a little small, but I didnt mind it. It was perfect for 2. The lobby was clean and well kept. The hallways where clean, freshly painted, and well maintained. The elevator was old and had a little musty smell to it. Price: very reasonably priced. Also, they only place a hold of $50 on your credit card for the entire stay. Surrounding hotels like the Westin and Kimpton charge $100 per day hold on your credit card. I chose The Normandy hotel for this particular reason. I was moving my daughter into her first year of College and could not allow the hotels to hold $500 on my card. The Normandy worked out perfect for me! Breakfast: they offer a continental breakfast for $12. Very basic breakfast with bagels, muffins, apples, cereal. The coffe and tea are free. Staff: the staff was very helpful throughout my stay. They accommodated me when I arrived late. They accommodated me when the AC in 505 stopped working and switched my room to 507. I extended my stay an additional night and they were very helpful in assisting me with my extention. Overall, they were very friendly, knew the area well, made great suggestions and recommendations for things to do/eat. Problems during my stay: by the 2nd day, my AC in room 505 stopped working for no apparent reason. I noticed the temp in my room was 79 degrees and did not change. I tried to adjust the temp on the thermostat but it did not work. I left the room for the day, and when I returned the room was still 79 degrees. I called the front desk and they stated it was too late in the evening and they did not have maintenance on staff. However, they were able to give me the option to change my room to room 507. Room 507 was also feeling a little warm, and the temp was set at 74. It wasn't as bad as the other room, but it wasn't as cool as I would have liked it to be. I am not sure if they were having issues in the building or if it was just my luck. By the next morning it was a little cooler but I checked out that day so hopefully they worked out the issues. Overall, I would stay here again. It was a lovely hotel and I enjoyed my stay. Even though I had an issue with the AC, they handled it and they deserved the 4 stars.

For the rates they charge, the conditions and service are unacceptable. The building is old, heavily dated, and features cheap fixings. The bathroom is tiny, featuring a cramped round sink with virtually zero counter space to set down any personal items. Furthermore, for a five-star hotel, lacking a proper hot tub and standalone shower is unacceptable. The towels provided are cheap, rough, and feel entirely out of place at this price point. The bathroom ventilation is so old and loud, that I can't even believe it's there. No fridge in the room, only a mini bar that will charge you if you move around mini bar items to place your own drinks. The view of the White House was severely misadvertised. To actually see it, you are required to pay an extra $700 on top of an already steep $600-per-night room rate. The acoustic insulation is non-existent. If anyone is staying in the room above you, forget about sleeping--every single footstep and movement carries straight through. The front desk staff was entirely dismissive. After promising to switch our room to resolve our issues, they dragged us through three separate attempts, wasted hours of our time with non-responsive answers, and then finally demanded we pay even more money to fix their mistake. After we went through, not even a complimentary breakfast or really anything. Shocked that this place is more expensive than Four Seasons, St. Regents, and the kind. This is barely a three star hotel (except location of course). Stay away.

May I also suggest providing more than one bar of mini soap bars. It's such a minuscule cost item but would obviate having to repeatedly move the precious one bar from sink to shower. We found the valet staff particularly helpful especially when navigating awkward arrivals and parking needs of our personal guests. Sean was a prince. He supervised an otherwise complicated set of logistics with competence and gentlemanly grace. Another shout out to the manager ( sou?) of the breakfast dining. We watched him rigorously oversee staff and guests while occasionally stepping in when helpful. His leadership is likely responsible for the professionalism of said staff. This is in direct contrast to the staff of the Willard across the street where we took the first breakfast of our stay. We were dismayed to have to endure extremely loud staff socializing, boisterous laughter and downright flirting. This type of behavior would have been unacceptable at the JWMarriott. A harpist also set the mood beautifully, but they didn't stay for very long- they maybe stayed about 30 minutes past our 3:30pm tea appointment. Tea services are offered at 12:00 noon and 3:30pm. The central cherry blossom tree is the showstopper, and the main reason I chose the Waldorf for our afternoon tea. I had heard that there are several cherry blossom-themed afternoon teas all over DC that may have better food options, but this was the only one with decor this grand. My main concern was with our seating. I had called ahead of time to ask if they could accommodate my group to have a close seating location close to the cherry blossom tree due to our special occasion. The staff assured me during two separate calls that they would be able to accommodate our request, but upon getting seated, we were seated in the far corner by the bar. It is true that there is a fair view of the cherry blossom tree everywhere in the lobby, but I was disappointed at our far vantage point given the fact that I had called to confirm a close spot to the cherry blossom tree twice in advance. This is because I wanted to originally schedule the premium experience (premium seating, champagne, and fine china), but it was not available to groups larger than 4 and we were a group of 6. The service was otherwise perfectly fine and the portions of food were generous and tasty. We were all definitely full after finishing our savory bites. Our collective favorites were the chicken cherryaki and crab beignet bites, but we all appreciated the diverse offerings. We also had a friend with a peanut allergy dining with us, and they accommodated her easily by separating her pastries onto a separate tiered tray. It looks like the only item with a possible nut allergen was the crab beignet (her version had tofu). Despite the mild issues with seating, the experience was gorgeous. As a cherry blossom lover, I can see myself doing this every time I'm back in town. - Ambiance: 5/5 - Service: 4/5 - Food: 4/5
