This place left a very bad taste in my mouth about Carmel. We went in to the Normandy Inn to see if they had any vacancies. As soon as we went to the desk, we were greeted (not really) by a woman with an accent. She looked at my husband and I up and down, like we were being critiqued. She informed us there were no vacancies; however, the sign out front said different. I have never been so rudely treated by a hotel. We walked out and both couldn't believe what just happened. Me quickly left Carmel and went to Monterey; where we had a great time. The Portola Hotel and Spa was so much better of a hotel. read more

This was such a fabulous last-minute surprise. We decided to stay over on a Saturday night and chose the Normandy Inn after reading reviews... SO GLAD! We won't even think of staying anywhere else next time we're in Carmel! Really a fantastic value if you want to stay somewhere nice and super clean but not fancy and spend a ton of money. Why? Most important to me, it was CLEAN!!! Very, very clean, down to the last detail. We didn't want to spend a ton of money, and we got a last minute rate of $150 for a cottage-suite with a queen bed and a roll out couch for the kids (ages 5 and 6). No problems with noise that other people have mentioned, but the cottage was a free standing unit. Pleasant and helpful folks in the office. Continental breakfast was just crappy white bread, bagels and muffins, cold boiled eggs, but all I needed was a little protein, and again-- I did not want to spend over $200 so I was thrilled that we had breakfast with an egg option. No dogs allowed on the property. I saw the WIERDEST cat on the planet... It looked like it was a long haired orange tabby, that had been shaved/groomed to look like a lion. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, and I think it might belong to the proprietors. Scary-wierd-funny. Maybe to scare away dog owners? just kidding. read more

Location was great! Rooms are ok and need work with the bathrooms. reason for the less than four/five stars were the hotel didn't have wifi connection and didn't give any notice. I simply went to my room and tried to connect several times.. there should have been a note or during check-in something that said wifi down... I had to ask the front desk who seemed to busy to respond two separate times. It wasn't till i noticed several other guest in the lobby with their computers in hand that there was an issue with the in room wifi connection. The morning breakfast wasn't good at all.. BOOO.. What saved this place was simply the decent coffee and the location. Since there are so many other B&B and hotels local I do suggestion checking other places first. I agree with the reviews that the walls here are paper thin. I was on the first floor and the people upstairs appeared to be very noisy and I could hear everything when they awoke and got ready starting at 5am. My room was also facing the main street, so there was a lot of street noise with people stopping to talk on the street and traffic noise. The hotel advertises that there is plenty of parking, but the parking lot is for 8 cars and there are a lot more rooms than that. I was never able to find a parking spot in the lot (over 3 days). The parking stalls in the lot are very small and if you have an SUV or other large car you will not fit. Parking on the street was very difficult until after 11pm. The hotel's response to parking is 'you should be able to find something on some side street'. That wasn't a welcome response after driving & sightseeing all day. The breakfast was okay, not extensive. the office is not staffed at night. read more

So I read the reviews of this place after my husband already booked reservation. Since we couldn't cancel it by the time he told me. I wanted to believed he researched about the place. First was told our room would be an ocean view. ABSOLUTELY no ocean to be seen , maybe a quarter size of it if you look farther south. Our room is very small. Even smaller than our kitchen at home. It's true what other people have said, walls are very thin. The room has a strange set up. Never stayed in a hotel/ motel where closet is IN the bathroom. YES !! I said closet in the bathroom. No refrigerator in the room. That's inconvenience since people do eat out and might have leftovers that needed to be refrigerated. Heater is VERY noisy when you turn it on. Kept me up . Don't believed I would want to stay here again. Mediocre place!!!! breakfast another story. read more

After many return visits to the Normandy Inn, we continue to be extremely satisfied with the friendly staff, clean and classic accommodations, and overall experience. It is so refreshing to stay in an environment that has retained some of the old fashioned feel but not compromised on amenities. The breakfast array is very complete with fresh fruit, bagels, cereals, hard boiled eggs, awesome homemade muffins and really good coffee. I am very picky about my coffee and often travel with my own, but never when we stay here. The rooms are always clean , quiet and well ventilated. We have visited in all seasons and have never had a problem with room temperature. Sherry and shortbread is available in the office sitting area in the late afternoon which is a nice added touch. The pool is always clean, one never sees any litter and I rarely see the gardeners ( do they work at night??) but they do an amazing job, wish they were taking care of my plants! thank you to the Normandy Inn staff for many years of top notch service!!! read more

Great place to stay if you're not looking to spend a ton of money on a hotel. We got a great deal for $99/night. I have AAA too, which they do offer a AAA discount, but I didn't see where to get the discount when I booked online so I missed out on that, but oh well. Room was clean, basic. There's no pets allowed which I was happy about because I don't have a pet. Staff was friendly. There's a continental breakfast, just the basics (hard boiled eggs, bagels, muffins, cereal, fruit, coffee) but still nice to have. The place is only a few blocks from the beach which is amazing and also it's right on the main downtown street, Ocean Ave. There's parking onsite included. Would definitely stay here again next time I'm in town! :) read more

Excellent location in the heart of Carmel and a reasonable price. We arrived at 1:00, ahead of check-in time, and were told that our room was ready and they would happily check us in a few hours early. The woman at the front desk gave us a nice big parking space because we had a truck (full of bikes and camping gear) which although simple, was very thoughtful. The room was quaint, nothing spectacular but it was nicely decorated and seemed to have been updated recently (except the bathroom, which I didn't mind too much). Huge windows with gorgeous shutters to let in plenty of light or block it completely out. The bed WAS SPECTACULAR. The mattress was cushy enough, but didn't kill my back. The linens were comfortable, and pillows just right (I HATE HUGE overstuffed pillows). Checkout was fast and again, service at the front desk was great. Reasons for only 4 stars and not 5: For the price, I felt that even a simple continental breakfast could have been better. Bagels, hard boiled eggs, some cereal. Not impressive or what I'd like to start a nice vacation day with. The coffee shop a block or two up got the job done. Also, the bathroom was quite outdated with a yellowed tub (although clean). We have stayed here several times and always loved it. The location is great. It's nothing fancy, but it doesn't need to be. We will probably stay here again in the future. The reason for my 2-star review is because I have been trying to by a gift certificate to give to a friend for Christmas and after 3 weeks of trying I have finally given up. There is only one person who can sell a gift certificate and she is impossible to get ahold of. She is never there and when she is, she is always "busy." I have called dozens of times over the past 3 weeks and she is always "busy with family" or "just had surgery" or "on the other line." Seems to be they should give that task to someone else who isn't so busy. It's a shame. We love this place but now I have a bitter taste in my mouth. read more

Stayed here recently for 2 nights and would recommend it to anyone looking for a romantic getaway spot that is conveniently close to downtown Carmel restaurants and the beach. LOVED the wood fireplace in our room and the complimentary continental breakfast. Staff was extremely friendly, wifi was free and easy to log onto, and the complimentary tea and coffee all day was a bonus! We had two problems. 1) the shower faucet was broken and we were not able to take a shower in the morning. 2) There was a problem with the fireplace chimney that caused the room to fill with smoke. It is a nice looking place just didn't work well. When we told the front desk about the problems the only response was that we should have called maintenance. Would have been better to have a room that worked and not had to worry about maintaining it for them. We only stayed one night. Would not recommend this place. read more

The Manager, Sandy, should not be working in hospitality. She actually tried to charge me more than my reservation and when questioned, her response out loud, with my 25 year-old daughter standing there with me, was "I was just trying to get some more money." She ruined our stay there with an I-am-in-control-of-you-and-everything-that-happens-here attitude. It is not what you want to to be greeted by when starting a get-away in Carmel. Great location with the ocean a 5 minute walk downhill and great coffee shops just minutes uphill (up Ocean Ave). Hotel itself is showing signs of wear but this is reflected in the room rate which is not overly expensive. The rooms are clean the staff are friendly and professional. Breakfast is nothing special - mainly yogurt, cereal, hard boiled eggs, low-quality muffins, and a small selection of fruit (bananas and oranges). If you are looking for something more substantial you are better off walking around the Carmel itself, or driving down the coast toward Big Sur (take the drive to Big Sur whatever you do - spectacular coastal views). One cautionary note - WiFi does not really work in many of the rooms and cellular service is spotty. If you know you will need to check in with the outside world - home, work, etc. - you are going to need to go to the main lobby. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would...****CROOKED*** I am not sure why it took me 3 months to write this review, maybe because I still had hope this hotel would call back to resolve this after putting in the 60-90 day dispute with my bank. Well they didn't so here is my experience that I feel the need to share with others. As working in the hospitality business, I've never been so poorly treated as a human before. Me and my boyfriend went on a week long trip up the coast of California. We spent two days in the beautiful town of Carmel before traveling to Big Sur. Our stay at this hotel started off as a great room overlooking the terrace pool area. The room was clean and spacey. Upon leaving the hotel/ the morning of I took about a 10-15minute shower and closed the glass doors. Not realizing until I exited the shower, there was water on the ground. From my observation, there was nothing wrong with how I closed the glass doors. So yes I called up for about 3 additional towels (which was enough to clean the floor). 2 days later I notice a charge on my credit card for $500 so I call the hotel and insist how it must be a mistake and to call me when it was fixed. The clerical told me she will bring it up to her manager and someone will call me back. Well, I get a call two days later from a woman yelling at me and saying this was my fault and how I flooded the whole electrical box and the room below. She YELLED at me how "I am going to pay for this" and "I broke her shower" and "this is all my fault." Never been so rudely confronted ever before, I was dumbfounded and shocked. Not only was I harassed over the phone, I was treated so poorly. After the "manager" hung up on me, I immediately called back to find the desk girl tell me "the manager is unavailable and will leave a message." First off, this is the most obscene situation I've ever dealt with. Second off, nobody from the hotel called me to "ask what happened" or investigate the situation and even tell me that I was going to be charged. Finally, how dare the hotel blame me for their shower structure malfunction. This is why these places have insurance for things like these! My one night stay and one 10-15 minute shower use was no way near responsible for their "so called damage." I didn't even have to clean up my floor mess but I did with the three extra towels I had! Absolutely ***CROOKED*** and took advantage of a young couple (early 30's) road-trippers from New York. read more

This cute little French style hotel/motel is located just about a block or two from the beach. The rooms are very nice and some come with kitchenettes. It offers, like many of the surrounding hotels in Carmel, a continental breakfast. In the lobby they offer coffee and cookies which I've seen at the other hotels but The Normandy Inn also offers, for their guests, a glass of sherry. The desk staff were very hospitable and the resident cat made it all the more homey. The prices are reasonable and lower than most of the hotels especially considering the location and what they offer. A must stay hotel when visiting Carmel. read more

I can't even begin to tell you what an awesome experience I had last weekend in Carmel staying at The Normandy Inn. It started way before the day of my getaway. David who booked my reservation was extremely kind and helpful. My father who was recently diagnosed with cancer lives with me and all though he is so warrior spirit enough to care for himself, I just wanted to take myself away for Valentine's weekend and enjoy some peace and quiet literally next to the ocean! David made sure to make that happen. Once I got there I had the pleasure of meeting Sherita(?) and Tina at the front desk... also VERY kind and helpful! I'd like to mention before I drove out there in called to find out what the weather was looking like in case of heavy rain, and Cecile not only took the time to look into the forecast, but also provided me with details regarding cancellations. They really took great care of me! I will mention that for some reason that night there was a group of kids who played "doorbell ditch", because kids will be kids and they were not guests, and once I contact Tina at the front office, she immediately contacted the local police. By the time they arrived the kiddos had scrambled. I mention this only to show how well the staff cares about their guests. The kids had nothing to do with the inn! Anyway, so many other great things about this place, parking, sitting area to read and/or eat, blocks from the ocean, etc. but check it out for yourself and I know you will enjoy your stay and really appreciate the staff! We stayed here for one night the week of Thanksgiving. I am originally from the Bay Area so I remember this place fondly and always wanted to stay here as a little girl. I'm over that now. The location is great, right on the main street four blocks from the beach. But the rooms desperately need updating and the parking is not adequate. It's cute on the outside and looks like something from Heidi. They had the old school tv, the bathroom had chipped tile and was really old. I'm glad we were only there for one night. But then again, it is Carmel and a better hotel would have probably been really expensive especially during a holiday week. Oh well. read more

I've been a guest here more than 20 years. My daughters are just about to start college and wanted to go on their first 'adult trip alone, and out of the blue chose Carmel and the Normandy Inn as their choice. Well I found that funny given their Mother and I actually honeymooned here. Well, the hosts were exceptional. The girls were welcomed like heroes, given assistance that ranks with the best of five star concierge (and I know, I am a developer of luxury resorts in North, Central and South America. The room is a charming as ever, sparkling clean and decorated with Carmel charm. The location is perfect for exploring Carmel by foot, parking is not an issue (which can be at other places) and the rooms are quiet, luxurious and ample. Real luxury at a much lower price than say the Lodge or some of those. I cant praise them enough, the Normandy Inn is fantastic. Our second stay. But I must admit we stay because my wife's parents LOVE this place. They are somewhat friends with the owner so we get treated well and rooms are always upgraded (if that means anything). The place is worn out for the most part, but we're comfortable regardless of the shortcomings. Parking is decent and location is perfect for my in-laws to walk everywhere considering they're over 80 years old. Nightly sherry is fun, but the breakfast is forgettable at best. $10 for breakfast at local eateries makes the free stuff worth skipping. I wouldn't choose here if it wasn't for the family thing, but if this is all it takes to keep everyone happy I can give a little. read more

Love this place. The location, the fireplace rooms and the staff are great. Spent wedding night here and both 10 and 20 yr anniversaries here as well. Much of what the other reviewers have mentioned are true. The inn is quaint and adorable, the architecture is warm. However, the front desk ladies' manners were not as friendly. The walls are thin, we could hear our neighbor all night long. There also is no heater in the bathroom. I asked the front desk for toothbrush and was told that they don't have them and I will have to buy them at nearby stores. I was shocked. Cheaper stays, such as the Comfort Inn offers them right in the rooms without asking. Had I perhaps not taken the dive of faith to stay here I would have convinced myself to reconsider my decision. read more

I am completely thrilled with The Normandy Inn. If you're going to judge a book by its cover, then it is safe to do so in this instance. I have read that this hotel is like a fairytale; and that is exactly how I would describe it myself. I only wish I would have thought of it first. Keep in mind when reading any reviews that some people will never be satisfied. However, I am a dreamer at heart and will always see things as beautifully as I can. The Normandy Inn is well-cared for, up-to-date and most importantly? It's CLEAN as a pin. The ambiance is effective in making me feel as if I'm in a quaint, distant country. Came down here with some family members. We weren't expected to stay, but just make a day about it. After much thought, we decided to stay, and we knew rooms were going to be limited--especially for same day booking. We stopped here and much to our surprise we were able to get a three bedroom cottage. It had its own kitchen and stove, 2 bathrooms and a real wood fireplace. The manager even kicked us down a deal! Went to Carmel for a romantic getaway weekend. Booked a cottage. Nice comfy soft king bed and kitchen. Everything was clean and nice. Bathroom was really, really small. If you are a larger size person the bathroom set-up will not work for you. Our cottage had a fireplace and the Normandy Inn supplied unlimited Duraflames. A really nice touch. Continental breakfast is supplied, but I would not consider this a Bed & Breakfast. Staff was very friendly and helpful. read more

My wife and I stayed there two nights in January 2012. The room was nice enough. And we could hear every word that was spoken by the couple in the room beneath us. Like every word. When we complained to management that it woke us up, they were dismissive and perfunctory. We were told my the manager that "It was an old hotel and we shouldn't expect much." Nice. The lack of sound insulation is one thing, rude service another. The hotel is in a good location in Carmel and apparently the management could care less about our experience. I am shocked to see so many people rated their experience at the Normandy Inn so positive. I found more things to complain about than to be pleased by. First and foremost...the woman at the front desk was rude and condescending toward guests coming by to see if there were any vacancies. We were sitting in the Foyer drinking some of the very cheap Sherry they offer every afternoon and we were shocked at the treatment several people were given by this representative of the Inn. We liked the atmosphere of the Inn a lot, but we found the noise from the office awoke us every morning at 5:30am. We stayed in a suite that is attached to the office. At check-in, I was told that our stay would be a quiet one, as they did not make any noise in the office....but the clomp, clomp, clomp of the friendly (Ha!) Innkeeper was too much to bear. The continental breakfast was average. The Bagels were the highlight.... The conditon of our room was definitely a disappointment. The toilet seat was old and worn out. Moreover, the lid would not stay up for use by a man....the toilet also leaked. They owners should get some pride and go down to Wal-Mart and spend $10 and buy a new lid at a minimum. For $190 a night, I am sure they can afford to buy one. The heaters were extremely loud, but worked very well (bring your ear-plugs). Again, an upgrade is a needed item here too. All in all, given the location of the Inn and the cozy atmosphere, many people would be satisfied staying here....But for me, I will look elsewhere next time.... read more

I acknowledge I made a mistake in my reservation, but since the establishment didn't lose money since I rebooked, I think this was handled badly. The good will lost may be worth more than the money. This is about your business decision. I noticed that you had a vacancy sign out when we arrived Friday which Was up until noon Saturday. I have a hard time believing you were Full Thursday. We called for an early arrival for Friday. Didn't anyone notice this was Strange if we were arriving Thursday? You sent an email about releasing our room Friday, but not Thursday. You got your money back when we rebooked for Saturday. Your cottage rooms have no insulation. The baby staying next door Could have been sharing my room. He woke me at 12,2, and 4 am. Don't think the mattress on the bed has ever been turned over, I felt I would roll out of bed. Also the WiFi is very spotty. So here's my business decision. We had our own little cottage to stay in for the night. It was so quaint and lovely. Breakfast was available in the morning in a separate building which could accommodate a big group of people. The Inn was very close to the various shops in the town. We could have spent several days exploring. Loved the town itself and so enjoyed the beach that was also very close by. We got a great rate for booking last minute. The location is great. The rooms are large. The bathrooms are very small and noisy and there is not enough parking for all of the rooms, so you may have to search for a spot on Ocean (good luck!) They have the cutest cat that lives on the property (which I had to stay away from due to allergies, but he was sooo cute!) The property is well maintained and pretty with lots of flowers. They offer a small breakfast of bagels, cereal and such. This is a good value. read more
