We enjoyed a three night stay at The Notchland Inn as part of a recent anniversary trip to New England. Our room was The Bear, on the second floor, front side, with some mountain and garden views. We were not there in time to enjoy dinner on Sunday, but the breakfasts were amazing. Les & Ed have a low-key, relaxed style of hospitality. They had suggestions about local attractions, timing, and travel routes. We loved hearing about the history of the Inn and the surrounding area. Their two dogs are enthusiastic greeters. As others have noted, do not go expecting TV and wifi. This is a different kind of experience. It was serene and peaceful. Just what we needed. read more

What a gem!!!!! From Kelly at the front ( of everything!) to Ed ( owner) to Jim ( Chef!!!) It feels like going "home " for dinner With a prefixe menu, arrive 30' before seating and enjoy a drink by the fire. Then into the dining room, a 4 course meal is beautifully presented! ( Jim said if you call a few days in advance he will get scallops! And his Nantucket Scallops are the best I've ever had!!!) They offer a fabulous wine list, and an unlimited serving desert menu!! The Staff is wonderful, attentive, and unobtrusive! The food is wonderful, ambience conducive to hanging and having a comfortable post- prandial chat. Unbelievable attention to detail and preparation. This is a must visit, for the price fixe one opportunity seating romantic meal. This might be the best culinary value in the state. Expertly prepared cuisine, at an extremely great value. Varied limited selection menu, you will not be disappointed, great beverage selections in an atmosphere that is unrivaled. This is not for everyone because this is not a chain type restaurant nor is it a commercial kitchen, this is a place to take your time and enjoy. Foodies keep this place a secret for a reason. I have mixed feelings about our stay at the Notchland Inn. The staff was pleasant and accommodating. Our room was very large and nicely decorated. The only reason we stayed at the Inn was because we received a gift certificate. Some people may like remoteness and quiet, we found it extremely boring. There are no televisions and very poor WiFi on the property. If you enjoy outdoor activities, the Notchland is perfect. If you want indoor activities during the day, there aren't any or an exciting night life with a bar and music, this not the place. The dining room is nicely decorated, breakfast is nice and filling, but supper is small portions and, in my opinion, too expensive for what you get. An elegant dinner shouldn't include a waiter in jeans and a flannel shirt; just saying. All in all, it was a fun weekend, but I honestly doubt I would return. read more

This inn is a jewel in American B&Bs. Hands down. We got here thanks to my spouse's generosity to celebrate our Anniversary. It was supposed to be a ski holiday but the creepy and tropical conditions thanks to the hated El Niño turned it into a relaxation holiday with only a little skiing. We arrived very late in the evening due to work and a rain/ice storm on the road. The innkeepers had turned in but we had an amusing welcome as the door opened up and there was a string with a card and our name on it. We followed the string throughout the house and it got us to our suite, deliciously appointed, clean, spotless, and best of all, with its own fireplace and dry wood to make a roaring apres ski fire.... Next morning we woke up to the sunlight on our faces telling us it was time for breakfast. We donned our ski suits and came downstairs to the common dining room where we were treated to a made to order meal with fancy breakfast trimmings. Off we went to Wildcat ski area and returned in the late afternoon. The owners and innkeepers have an encyclopedic knowledge of the area, the salient places to visit and the best way to get there. I loved their description of historical antecedents and how they got to today's environment. Listening to them was like being in a TED talk. The lack of snow notwithstanding due to a horrible El Niño warm early Winter, the stay was tops. And we had time to view the historical edifice and its charming interior and hear about the deforestation of the area in the 1800s and the natural disasters it caused, and how the area is still slowly recovering after 200 years. An amazing stay. If you want to experience this diamond of a place, go soon. The owners may place the inn for sale in the Spring. I hope it gets purchased by someone with the charisma, tact, courtesy and customer orientation as Ed & Les. They'd have huge shoes to fill. read more

This inn is not dietary needs safe. I have a serious autoimmune disorder called celiac disease. Its not a gluten allergy or a gluten sensitivity. It is an autoimmune disease where exposure to gluten in any parts above 22 parts per million causes serious medical complications and hospitalisation. My husband called and asked if they could accommodate a person with celiac disease. They said yes. What they didn't say is that it is a prix fixe meal with a set different menu every day. This doesn't qualify for allergen safe food let alone the extreme measures needed for an autoimmune disorder like celiac disease. Celiacs require dedicated food preparation space, including that all countertops and cookware, implements and plates be gluten free from inception. They can never have come in contact with gluten. Non-stick cookware and ceramic plates, metal and stone countertops and wood cutting boards are required to be gluten free for their entire history. When we arrived my husband told me i had to go explain to the "chef" how to cook a celiac safe meal. This is a celiacs worst nightmare. prix fixe meals are great - for people without seriousife threatening diseases, they are not, however, designed for people with serious medical conditions related to food exposure. Sadly, access to any food in a place able to deal with the tough dietary needs of a celiac were an hour drive away, in a snow storm. We paid a lot of money for a romanticweekend but ended up having to drive for an hour in a blizzard just so i could eat. The accommodations were handsome, if lacking in basic amenities such as a coffee machine or like i said - access to safe food. There is no cellphone service here, so u have to drive for an hour to get service just to find a place safe to eat. While I completely understand the desire for chef cooked prix fixe, five course meals, (id love for the opportunity to have that but as a celiac all enjoyable meal functions are out of reach) they should have never claimed to my husband to be celiac safe. It was way out of their reach and a lie to get us to book with them. So i starved, our romantic weekend was ruined, and if u arent a person with autoimmune disorders or severe food allergies, this is a place to enjoy. But not of they lie to make a booking and end up harming a guest. For that they get 1 star and a warning to anyone not of perfect health to stay away. read more

Step into a beautiful old stone mansion converted into a romantic inn. Fireplaces in every room including the guest rooms, create an ambiance of warmth and welcoming. Les, Ed and their fabulous team (Marc Suzy & Kelly) offer top notch service with great humor (LES!) & attention to detail. Dinner was delicious as well as breakfast! The mini muffins were a delight. My husband and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary and plan on making this a repeat each and every year! Staying here is always a joy - I have been coming since the present owners took the place over many years ago (my parents took me!) - they have expanded the Inn to include separate cottages where you can stay with your dog or just have a little romantic interlude with your own fireplace (every room I've ever stayed in has a fireplace.) My personal favorite room is probably Evans - a cute little suite on the second floor with a porch, a 2-sided class fireplace, a skylight over the bed on a slanted ceiling, and a great jacuzzi/hot tub on an elevated platform. The breakfast every day is fantastic. I recommend the cinnamon almond french toast. Definitely have dinner there at least one night - it's big-city gourmet with a rustic touch in the middle of nowhere New Hampshire! Also, I love the big gentle dogs who lumber around, and hanging out outside in the beautiful gardens. read more

We celebrated a 50th birthday...low-key. The Inn's dining room and 3 common sitting areas (including the tranquil sunroom) were large, comfortable and peaceful. No cell service, no tv's. Stayed in the Carter Notch suite but all rooms looked nice. Enjoyed the 5 course dinner, well worth $45 pp especially to not drive 24 miles round trip to the nearest restaurant. Mark, Patty and all of the staff were helpful. Mark provided helpful hiking/area information at breakfast. And the staff all make terrific martinis! read more

My husband bought a Groupon deal for two nights -- and sent me up in the mountains by myself! Notchland could not have been better for some peace and quiet. The innkeepers, to a person -- Mark, Les, May (?), and the several whose names I did not get -- were so warm and cheerful and helpful. They were attentive and friendly but gave me space. My room had a fireplace which I fed for hours just enjoying the warmth and light. The bed (I stayed in the huge Crawford Room) was outstanding! The breakfast was prompt, varied, and delicious. I was only disappointed I was not able to stay during the week when dinner was served. I've heard it is a treat. (They serve dinner Wed-Sun). The dogs -- Gypsy and Crawford -- won me over immediately. Usually a cat person, I delighted in their play. Right outside the house are hiking trails (I went in February) with snowshoes to rent. Mark was so helpful in advising and outfitting me for a 3 hour hike up a mountain. Fantastic workout and great views. Definitely going again -- with or without my husband. read more

We've stayed there many times in several different rooms. Each room has a different flavor, but all are very tastefully done, with a definite romantic theme....not kinky. Most rooms have a private fireplace, many many pillows, nice artwork and knickknacks, and wonderful private baths. The food, both at breakfast and at dinner is wonderful, nicely prepared, with service that's just right. If he's on, Mark is a wonderful source for guidance on things to do during the day. Ed and Les (Owners) are great. They are normally invisible during the day, but always are available if theres a concern. No phones, no TV, no cell phone coverage....as completely remote from daily stress as possible!! Wonderful. Well worth a try. read more

We're normally campers, so staying in the Whites in a cottage with a fireplace, whirlpool tub, luxury showers, and a king size bed was a treat and absolutely romantic! Our vacations generally include camping, backpacking, "showring" in rivers or coin-op showers, so Notchland was a splash out. WORTH EVERY PENNY. The care and pride that the Inn Keepers and every staffer feels about Notchland is evident from the moment you walk in. NO- from before you walk in, from the very first confirmation email you receive, obviously personalized, including details about the Inn and activities in the area during your stay. Everyone is very knowledgable about the area, ready to offer suggestions on hikes or activities depending on what you're looking for. Our travel day there it was raining and all we wanted was a pub with a TV to watch the USA-Canada hockey game (little did we know....), and Ed was more than happy to help us find one on the phone before we ever even checked in! Of course there are hikes and shopping and brew pubs and historical places and those gorgeous, wonderful views, but I could have been happy sipping coffee (or tea, or a glass of wine from their fantastic selection) in the Garden room, leafing through the AMAZING library. A wonderful history of the Notchland Inn, Carter Notch, and Harts Location is in your room and boy... whoever taps this story for their historical drama novel is gonna make it big. Les and Ed and all their staff are animal lovers through and through. Cottages are dog-friendly, and their own affable Bernese Mountain Dog, Gypsy (currently the only one), roams the main areas of the Inn and the grounds. The five course dinner was included in our package and HOLY COW! Delicious and elegant, but never for one second stuffy. We plan on going back for dinner this summer... AFTER we've hiked one of the 4thousand footers. Maybe we'll have room for the second helping of dessert they so readily offer! If you're not a regular "Bed and Breakfast" guest and you're worried about splashing out, choose the Notchland. You will not be disappointed. read more

Well being greeted by two beautiful Bernese Mountain Dog was the first indication that this was going to be good... and it didn't stop! David and I spent a midweek getaway here and it is just a peaceful and quite and as accommodating as you can imagine. The food was prepared with care, service divine and ambiance beyond ridiculous ! Ed, Les, and Mark know just how to make you feel at home along with providing the right amount of peace and quiet you require. know that your day will start with a wonderful breakfast, conversation around your plans for the day, followed by selecting your courses for your evening meal. The staff were nice. The hot tub not so much. I got bacteria and yeast infection when I stayed at their Kinsman suite. We were in the room when the housekeeper cleaned up and never did she touched the tub. I called the owner, Ed to inform them and all he could say was hope it wasn't from them. Way to go guys, take the money and don't care about anybody's health. Thumbs down for customer service. Never again! read more

One of the nicest, most warm & welcoming places we have ever stayed. We have been several times, once in the winter and once over Columbus Day weekend. The Bernese Mountain dogs are so much fun and make you feel right at home. The meals are superb, and the hosts - Les & Ed - couldn't be nicer or kinder. You really do feel as if you're visiting friends. Our favorite is the Kinsman - any room with a fireplace is wonderful even if it's just a bit chilly. Close enough to North Conway without feeling in the middle of the crowds. A bit expensive but worth every cent - for a special weekend, don't miss out on this wonderful inn. read more

My husband and I purchased the "elopement package" here, and I have to say that it was a magical and perfect evening. It was even better than I could have ever imagined or hoped for. Les and Ed didn't miss the slightest details. They made the wedding ceremony meaningful, personal and smooth. They took care of absolutely everything with such care, detail, and kindness that the day was flawless. The place is magical, it really is. We had an amazing wedding with minimal to zero stress, or work put into it from our end. I can't say enough how beautiful this Inn was, it was rustic and homey, had authentic art on the walls, and the furniture looks like it had all been carefully chosen. We felt at home the entire time. Notchland Inn is our "go to" when it's time for an R n R. I've been coming from Dallas to stay at Notchland for years to enjoy all the waterfalls and covered bridges of Northern New Hampshire. The owners Les and Ed are incredibly gracious, as are their staff, with impecable attention to every detail to make you feel like you've "Come Home". The made to order, home cooked breakfast in a beauitful sunroom watching all the birds and wildlife out side, is so restorative and peaceful. The rooms have Jacuzzi's and fireplaces to facilitate your unwinding. When you're there, check out the Floating Ball Fountain! My husband and I stayed for a night in Feb. After eating clam chowder, minute rice, 1 tiny lamb chop ( I had 4 medium shrimp) and scallops, so called 5 course meal we got sick. We informed them the next a.m. as we could not eat breakfast being up all night. After repeatedly emailing them for a response we were told that it was probably something we ate prior and would be given a refund on 1 of the meals, funny thing is haven't seen a penny..Terrible customer service, wouldn't recommend it. read more

The inkeepers have all the necessary information for first-time investigation of this staggeringly beautiful part of New England. Hiking, swiming, sking and everything else the mountains with nearby waterfalls offer are available adjacent The Notchland Inn, located in the National Forest, a few miles north of Barlett. We purchased a deal through Living Social, giving us two nights for $222 and a $25 voucher toward a dinner at the inn. I checked the website and the place looked lovely, a little getaway to the White Mountains sounded perfect. We had no idea just how beautiful and inviting the Notchland would be. Our room, a two room suite with full bath and jacuzzi tub was tastefully decorated with New England style furniture. Every room has a fireplace, but since it was August, we did not use but will be sure to on our next visit. Our room, was not the only beautiful place on at the Notchland. The entire grounds are surrounded by a wildflower garden and the dining room is sundrenched with beautiful views and visits from hummingbirds at the outside feeders. But, our favorite of all were the four innkeepers, Les and Ed were great, but it was Crawford and Felonie the Bernese mountain dogs who stole our hearts. We cannot wait to get back to the Notchland for more wonderful hospitality, strawberry pancakes, and a delicious dinner this fall or winter. read more

The most romantic place on earth! I fell in love with this place. There aren't enough words to describe the feeling I felt on the nights I stayed here. Hospitality at its finest and you get to see hummingbirds fly around as you eat freshly cooked breakfast. I hope to return with family and friends. This weekend, my husband and I got married at our little piece of heaven - The Notchland Inn in Hart's Location NH. Having stayed there on two other occasions, we knew immediately this was the place to have our intimate ceremony. Owners and innkeepers, Ed Butler and Les Schoof are the most gracious hosts we could ever hope for. This weekend, they exceeded our highest expectations!! We had eight members of family and friends join us for our special weekend. Ed and Les (and their exceptional staff) went out of their way to ensure the entire party was served with equivalent levels of service and experience that we have come to know. Ed had met with us early in the morning to ensure that everything was being planned as we wanted. Ed's team was handling the preparation, laying out the recommended ceremony progressive locations, and reception dinner at the Inn. This also included performing the ceremony (Ed is a Justice of the Peace) the photography and the cake. As expected the evening went off, as Ed had laid out. From the introduction of the bride and groom; to the ceremony; to the photography after the ceremony; to the reception; and social time for the wedding party, the execution was flawless, relaxed, intimate, and exactly what we were looking for. As stated earlier, the Notchland Inn is our little piece of heaven. They have large intimate rooms and suites. All rooms have wood-burning fireplaces (the Inn provides the wood). Their meals include a cooked to order hot breakfast (included with a night's stay) and an evening 5-course meal available that will not disappoint! While you are there, you will be greeted by Roxie and Gypsy - two of the most lovable and sociable Bernese Mountain dogs you will ever meet!! Loved this Inn. The rooms were nice and we loved, loved the working fireplaces in each room. Bring wine; they have glasses, opener ready in the rooms. The Staff was very friendly and helpful. The dog/s walking about is fun too. Also the food was great, little pricey but very good. The close proximity to skiing, x-country and downhill, snow shoeing and many other things is also a big plus. I booked this as a Valentine's Day gift for my girlfriend; I was a little frustrated I could not actually book V-day they required a 3 night stay because of President's Day. However the many, many PRO's out way any small Con's... Pack your bags and go. read more

My family and I recently celebrated my wife's birthday and valentines day at the inn. We were extremely disappointed with the service and portions of the various meals served . The restaurant touted a prix fixe meal with 5 courses ($46.00) but when the meal was just about over, they asked if anyone still wanted a Caesars salad. If you said yes, they brought a tiny plate out. While the salad tasted ok the portion was tiny. Although in some European countries the salad is served after the main course, I saw this as an attempt to avoid serving it at all. More importantly, the portions of the food served were microscopic in size. The potato soup that was served was no more than than two or three ounces at best. While tasty, there was not enough. I had the pork loin and it came with at best 3 ounces of meat. Hardly enough to warrant the high price. My wife had the chicken breast which at best was a 3 ounce serving, with a couple of sprigs of broccoli. Again while tasty, the portions looked lonely on the plate. When the dessert came, the chocolate moose was in a parfait glass which was not even 1/3 filled. One of the owners or chefs came over to the table and said that if we wanted more he could fill up the parfait glass. We were seated at 7 and did not finish until after 9:00. All around us people were complaining about the slow service and the size of the portions. While no one made a scene at the time, we were all extremely disappointed with the meal. While I do not necessarily expect to come away from a meal stuffed to the gills, I do expect some value for the dollars. In fact my two boys went out to Burger King about an hour after we left, because they were still hungry. While the Inn may have tried to create the illusion of it being an upscale dining experience, in the middle of ski country,and therefore it was not necessary to serve adequate portions, it failed miserably. We have dined at inns in Beaver Creek, Vail, and Deer Valley, and Park City, and while the prices may have been even higher than the Notchland Inn, we never came away hungry or feeling that we were cheated.. At best this was a $20.00 meal at more than twice that. We will not repeat, nor would we recommend to any of our friends. As a final note, my wife called the Inn several days later to complain and spoke to someone who said the owner would get back to her. He or she never called. read more
