Last year I booked a 50-minute stretch massage at The NOW in Burlingame and saw Deja. It was such an incredible experience that I genuinely looked forward to coming back. Unfortunately, Deja no longer works there, so I decided to take a chance and booked with Nicole. I just spent $160 on what felt like a glorified back massage. While she did a solid job on my upper back, the rest of the session felt rushed and minimal. We discussed pressure before hand and she mentioned she would increase to a firm/deep as it went on. The pressure did not build. My arms and legs were briefly rubbed, but very little time was actually spent working on each limb. Additionally, for some of the session she kept the sheet between her hands and my body. Being massaged through a sheet was far from ideal and not what I expect when paying for a full-body service. I also want to add that while I have empathy for anyone who may be feeling under the weather, she was coughing and clearing her throat frequently throughout the session, which felt very unsettling and took away from the ability to relax. I paid for a full-body massage and did not feel that's what I received. Overall, this was a mediocre experience that unfortunately did not make me want to return. read more

I brought my girlfriend here to pamper her with a prenatal massage to celebrate her first day on maternity leave. I, myself, have tried a variety of prenatal massages for my two pregnancies, but have never been here. Since my friend was already at 36 weeks, I did not want to drive us too far in case of the possibility of pre-labor. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Luckily, the NOW massage had two appointments available for us for same day booking.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The way we chose the massages were a bit weird. I booked online and called to confirm about the prenatal massage since it was not an option online. The clerk said they had it so I added the prenatal one and paid for the extra prenatal boosters.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They had several kinds of massages so I booked the prenatal one for my friend and the athletic (their strongest one) for myself. On the phone, the clerk said she would explain the different types of massages to my friend once we arrived. When we got there, I had to ask the clerks to explain the differences to her. When my friend said she did not need the extra prenatal boosts for the extra charges, the clerk said we had to pay for it. That was weird because it seemed more like an option to add-on rather than required. When we got inside, the massage area was a straight long hallway that was dark. Inside the massage areas were orange spa lights and ocean waves playing in the background. It was indeed relaxing! However, for the price we paid, I would much prefer a private room like all the other luxury prenatal massage places I had been to. This one reminded me of the asian massage places with a long hallway and closed curtains between other clients. Not that it was bad but it did not feel fancy for the price we paid. My friend and I both thought the massages here were not strong enough for us. I never tried their prenatal massage but after going to prenatal massages almost every week during my third trimester, I could only imagine how weak it may have been. Their strongest one which was the athletic massage that I got was only okay. I had stronger prenatal massages at other places than the strongest ones here! Both my friend and I asked the masseuses to go harder in strength but the power just was not enough. I even booked their top masseuses too! Kinda disappointing! Another thing I did not like was the tipping part. I had never been to a massage place where they tell you how much to tip and say it out loud. It felt uncomfortable because the clerk did not give me an option to select how much tip I wanted to pay but told me what they expected me to tip for that service. Tipping was always an option for excellent services, not tipping as a standard price for the charges they put on their menu. Normally, I gave a minimum of 20% tip for my masseuses who did excellent or removed knots, but if I felt like they only rubbed my body rather than actually massage me, than they really did not fulfill the service I paid for. I've been going to The Now pretty much since they first opened. I learned about The Now on a trip to Arizona and loved my massage I had there. So I was excited to learn one would open here soon after that. It's great since it is walkable so I don't have to worry about the Burlingame Ave parking. Otherwise parking is dicey. My two favorite massage therapists are Nadine and Deja. I get monthly massages more for my overworked muscles and less for relaxation. Pros: - They have different massages for different needs. You can even get The Stretch and work on some mobility. - I really like the two massage therapists I book with although I've had not as good experiences with others. They are good at focusing on what I outline. - [[HIGHLIGHT]]The front desk has been really nice about fitting me in last minute and letting me know about cancelations, which is helpful with my tight schedule.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Cons: - [[HIGHLIGHT]]It took trying a few people to find the right fit. They don't have bios anywhere for you to read. It would be easier to find someone who is a fit if you could learn a little more about their style.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Also I feel like there is some turnover so it's hard to keep track of massage therapists. - The way the franchise works, the treatment rooms are tents so you can hear people talking even with the music. He surprised me with a trip to The Now in Burlingame for our couples, but not really couples because we're in separate rooms massage and it was great. Upon entering the establishment, you're immediately greeted / checked in and can feel the relaxing vibes from the environment. The staff from start to finish was kind and friendly and really help you ease into the idea of undressing and having someone you don't know massage your body. You start off by choosing what type of massage you want and then add in different enhancements to elevate your experience. My fiancé booked the signature massage for us and I added the gua sha. My masseuse was friendly and kept checking in to make sure I wasn't feeling any pain that I couldn't handle. The gua sha added a different feeling to the normal massage, but it was welcomed. Overall, it was a good experience for the both of us and we felt refreshed for the rest of the day. The massage therapist asked me about the amount of pressure- I communicated that I wanted a 10 pressure - but felt like the pressure was really like a 2. Furthermore, [[HIGHLIGHT]]my partner who also got an 80 min massage with several add ons and had a different masseuse had a similar experience. He said that she really didn't focus on the parts they had communicated as "focus areas" and pressure wasn't great.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We both had the "deep tissue add on" along with others ( my partner also got" fresh eyes""- describing as just getting eye jellies placed for a few mins," "scalp massage" with coconut oil and "herbal heat" noting an additional blanket being included). Told me the pressure scale would be ranging from 1-6. It was a relaxing session, briefly going over areas of concern (knots). Pushed (like rocked my body) a couple times. Only at the end when I asked her to help me with my obvious knot on my upper back when she finally got to the real issue i had. I've tried THE NOW & THE HEALER today & the healer with deep tissue has been my favorite by far! I wanted to give a huge shoutout to Tanya for the amazing massage & finding knots in my body that I wasn't even aware of! I signed up for the membership back in December. The rate was reasonable and they told me I could cancel anytime with no charge. My first massage was great. My 2nd was not great. I am pregnant which I have to add on an additional $15 so they can add a pillow to the table, and turn off the heat. In my 2nd appt I did not know they were suppose to turn off the heat and it was on full blast, which I didn't mind, but for a pregnancy massage I guess it's an issue. My massage yesterday started off good. I had asked for firm pressure and my therapist did check in often which I respected. At the end though she was super rough with my shoulders and neck I was concerned but also was thinking "I'm sure she knows what she's doing." There was no pillow under my head which my neck just felt unsupported. But also I was tight so again I figured it was fine. Afterwards, I had already planned to cancel my membership since I'm now 23 weeks pregnant just feel I need more of a chiropractic massage and someone that really understands my body. When I went to cancel, they then told me they had to go through another billing cycle which really frustrated me. I then said "I was told I could cancel anytime?" And they responded with "you can cancel anytime, but it's one more billing cycle." And I said "so it's actually a 30 day cancellation." And there was no response. That really just annoyed me. But I tried to move on and figured I would book the last session for my husband. But to finalize all this... I woke this morning with the most sore and stiff neck which I have NEVER experienced and have had hundreds of massages. So now I had to call my chiropractor to get a last minute appointment so she could fix the issue. My team gifted me a gift certificate for this location and it had been a very long time since I had gotten a message. My therapist Monique was fantastic. She listened to where I had tightness and where I would need support due to prior injuries before we got started and made sure to have me give feedback if pressure was too much along the way. The location/aesthetic is very minimalist yet serene, loved the crashing waves and thunder that played throughout my 80 minute massage. I added on the guiding cupping, which really didn't do much, so wouldn't add that again as I am used to more traditional cupping. Overall the massage was delightful and Monique was able to release a ton of tension in my neck and shoulders. I left super satisfied and will definitely recommend and return! read more

She is so warm and welcoming and a great conversationalist. They happened to have a 25 minute appointment available in 20, so I sat and waited and we talked. Really wonderful and sweet! I go in for my appointment and I swear, Christine did wonders in that 25 minute span! My body feels so much better and she was very kind and checked throughout to make sure I was happy and comfortable. I liked the ambiance of this place quite a lot. I liked the heavy canvas drapes instead of walled off rooms and ocean sound machine, but if that's not your thing, here's your heads up! I had booked an 80 minute massage but there was a glitch in their online scheduling - I successfully started an online account with them complete with my credit card, but the appointment was not set. They had a 25-minute slot open so I eagerly took it, and choose The Healer session from their menu (they have Healer, Now, and Stretch). The massage therapist gave me about 10 additional minutes which was quite generous. He had a good, soothing, Swedish/Lomi-Lomi type technique that worked nicely on my back and hips. I suppose the session was named The Healer because there was a bit of aromatherpy applied here and there. It was nice, but not expert level you'd get from someone who works with herbs or is trained in reiki. The add-on scalp massage was almost nothing - more like having someone put some produt in my hair, and not a good scalp rubbing. There were a couple of good moments at my neck, but not what I was expecting. My impression is that the place is a bit like Massage Envy, a franchise that employs massage therapists early in their careers. Only a lot prettier. I agree with other reviews that this place is more about chilling out than something therapuetic. But sometimes that's what you really need.
