Popped in for dinner and King Trivia on Wednesday night. Food was solid. Hubs got the OG hot dog w/bacon wrap sans pico de gallo, then added cheese. I went with Cali Chicken sando: grilled breast, added cheese, avocado spread hold tomato, lettuce and mayo. We also shared a reasonable small size crinkle fries and they were hot and yum! You can order either via the QR code or through the bar staff. Food arrived about 15 mins later and was hot and satisfying. Interior is decorated with both sports and music themes - interesting. This was our 3nd time coming to SLO for the ren faire and our 2nd time at Schoolyard. First time was fantastic, this time did not disappoint. Asa our bartender and server was phenomenal, gave great suggestions, and was cool with making a signature drink without the alcohol. Stopped in here for dinner while my kid was at orientation at Cal Poly. It was early evening/late afternoon so the place was pretty empty. I ordered the Buffalo chicken wrap and a margarita. It took me a half hour to eat the wrap because it was so perfect I wanted to savor every bite. The drink was perfectly refreshing. The atmosphere seemed fun and relaxed. Mixed review. Chose to dine here with my Diamond points. Placed my order with bartender. All three items came at once. Shame on me to think that a single person ordering an appetizer, salad, and main would want them delivered all at the same time. Burger was very good (warm, tasty, on a good soft bun). Salad was a wedge. Had to walk up and ask the same person for dressing. Had to break her away from her 10-15 minute one on one with a person at the bar. Never did she look at me or come to check on my meal. Only three of us in the entire room. After I was done, with empty plates stacked, did she come to ask me anything. Can I get you anything else? Title: Great Chicken Club, Weirdest Episode of Restaurant Survivor Ever We walked into Schoolyard at 1:30 p.m. and immediately thought we'd walked in the wrong way--it was completely empty except for two people at the counter, deep in conversation, not exactly rushing to greet us. We walked past the woman at the counter into the other room, spotted a sign on the wall that said, "Take a seat, use the app to order..." and commented out loud how odd it was there were no menus. Then we wandered back into the room we'd entered through, and that's when the woman finally acknowledged us, grabbed some menus, followed us to a table, and said, "You can order from me whenever you're ready." At first, I honestly didn't know she worked there--brightly patterned shirt, casual as could be, no apron or name tag--she looked more like a customer on vacation than staff. The only giveaway was that she was standing behind the counter with Polo Guy, who definitely looked like an employee in his crisp black polo and neat haircut. The two of them stayed planted at the front, talking together the entire time we were there, only breaking away when we managed to get her attention for service. We decided what we wanted, but she stayed at the counter with Polo Guy, not glancing our way. Eventually I called out, "We're ready to order when you're ready." She nodded... then walked to the opposite wall of the restaurant and yelled across the room to take our order. Yes--yelled. Like we'd been dropped into a new Food Network competition called Screaming for Service. The food came out quickly--14 minutes instead of the app's ominous 30-minute prediction. The chicken club was fantastic--honestly one of the best I've had--and almost enough to make me forget the weird service. Fries came with ketchup in a tiny tub, which felt odd. For a hamburger-and-fries kind of place, why not have bottles of ketchup on the table? This isn't fine dining, so the ramekin treatment just seemed unnecessary. They also brought an unasked-for side of ranch (whatever, but a waste). Presentation was meh: little black plastic baskets lined with paper, like a snack bar. Oddly enough, the silverware was beautiful, high-quality stuff--totally out of place with the rest of the setup. The no-drink-refill situation was rough. We were bone dry halfway through, but she never looked over. When we were done, our table neatly stacked for pickup, we waited... and waited... until I finally interrupted their conversation to ask for the check. She brought it right away, and my companion immediately planted their credit card on it so she wouldn't walk off again without it. To be clear -- the woman wasn't rude at all. She simply wasn't attentive and doesn't have the customer service skills that make a sit-down restaurant pleasant. Final verdict: Food: 9/10 (LOVED the chicken club -- worth ordering again for delivery) Fries: 6/10 (High school cafeteria crinkle cuts -- fine, but $6 is a stretch) Service: 2/10 (Not rude, just inattentive and unskilled) Ambiance: 6/10 (Empty but not unpleasant -- one dirty table stayed that way the entire visit) The chicken club was so good I'd happily order it again for delivery. But to eat inside? Only if I bring a megaphone and lower my expectations for service. read more

Nice restaurant/bar inside the Wayfarer hotel. There's plenty of indoor seating and a small patio (no shade). We had a quick lunch, club sandwich and the ahi salad. Both dishes were OK and looked like something you would make at home, which for the price can be a little underwhelming. I would definitely not eat here unless you're staying at the hotel and are too hungry to wait to go elsewhere. read more

Stayed at the Wayfarer a few days and stopped in here almost every night. Food is great (get the shoyu wings). The beer selection is solid. The happy hour has some great stuff at great prices (ends at 5p though. Little too early compared to other bars/grills. The staff is second to none. Had a great experience every day with the staff. I will say, don't bother coming to trivia on Wednesday nights though. Apparently, 6 cal poly professors make up one team and all have their phones out. They ran the table (and I hear they often do) so it's pretty useless to even try and win. Make team size limits and enforce phones. Also tell the trivia master to just read the questions, we don't need the political/opinion lectures on the questions/answers. read more

Good sized, great flavor, cooked perfectly with bacon and avocado. $16 was a bit steep though for just a burger. Wife had the Ahi salad. Ahi was good and fresh but overall presentation was underwhelming and it was just a small salad. Left here 730pm on 8/2/23. There was only one person working. One single human. Now I do think the one person I saw had a cook in the back but I did not see that human so at this point I am assuming that this lone soldier was cooking the food as well. One person. Taking orders. Running the bar. Making the drinks. Bringing the food. Cleaning the tables. Dealing with the customers. And yes I even witnessed his receipt printer running out of paper so then he had to go on a scavenger hunt to find the receipt rolls and replace it; because of course that would happen when you are one person running an entire restaurant and possibly cooking the food as well!! One. Single. Human. And he was doing a fantastic job!!! Great job to you my brother. He gets five stars but really he deserves most of the dollars that he helped drive to the business that night. Food was above average. Burger was good. I didn't love the crinkle cut style of French fries they served but I understand that fries are kinda of gamble. This business needs to staff better which in todays world means you need to pay more. If you can't pay more, cut positions or cut the business. Treat your people better. Until then.
