This was my first time at Condessa. The service was excellent and extremely friendly. The menu was creative and it was fun to try something new. The decor was inviting and fun. The only downside in dining here is the parking situation. THERE IS NO PARKING IN THE RESTAURANT PARKING LOT FOR RESTAURANT CUSTOMERS - it is ALL for the B&B next door. We were on our way to a Blues baseball game and had to swing by and try the Condesa bar/restaurant in SLO. When we arrived we quickly realized every spot in the parking lot was labeled HOTEL PARKING. I parked and ran inside for the employee to confirm that indeed, the establishment has zero private parking onsite and that we could try and park in the neighborhood a block away or on the street. Ok, strike one, totally inconvenient but we were determined to give them a try. The employees were warm and friendly from start to finish. Great service. We were seated in a booth illuminated with candle light. We arrived during happy hour and enjoyed a delightful lemon drop and house margarita. We ate delicious carne tacos, chicken taquitos and elote. The portions are small but pack tons of flavor. Overall, I really like the sheik setting where comfort meets classy. Probably one of the best cocktail bars I have ever tried. Their drinks were beautifully crafted with great attention to details easily missed. The flavors really complemented each other and you can tell a lot of thought went into it. The food offered followed suit. I wanted to try a little of everything and with every dish served, they knocked it out of the park. The ceviche was light, lemony and tender, slightly spicy and served with homemade tortilla chips dusted with black salt. The chicken mole taco was savory and smoky, and amazingly complimented by the corn tortilla. Their Taco de Mar was savory and cheesy. I cannot speak of the parking situation since it was walking distance from where we were staying but I also cannot recommend this place enough. This was a great stop on a brief trip to SLO. The restaurant is small but well kept and decorated. Came in around 7:30 on Saturday and were seated immediately. I had the Paloma cocktail and it was well balanced and beautifully presented. The chips and salsa were good but on the smaller size - salsas were flavorful and not too spicy. The beef plate was good with a mid rare steak (how I like it). Would've liked to see more guac on the plate and there were some small squash things in the vegetable mix that were a good sr flavor addition. I was able to add tortillas to my order which helped make the plate into some tacos. Finished with some churros which were warm, a good amount of cinnamon, and came with two tasty sauces. As SLO locals and Airbnb hosts, we decided to try Condesa. Loved the ambience, feels like you have gone back in time. My husband tried the mole enchiladas, which he enjoyed, the chicken was tender and there was plenty of Mole sauce. I am a taco connoisseur, so I tried the mole taco and the Pescado Asado, which is a grilled fish taco. Again, the chicken was tender and mole sauce was super rich and yummy, but they were stingy with the Mole sauce and the pickled onions, queso fresco and cilantro.... If there had been more of the fresh ingredients, it would have made this taco wonderful. The Pescado Asado taco was nice, but the fish was not cooked in any seasonings, so it was just fish and it was not Bass. As with the Mole taco, the fresh ingredients were stingy and would have added more texture and taste if there had been more. The corn tortillas were superb! I did not see on the menu that they are making their own tortillas, but the taste and the texture of the tortillas were spot on. The drinks we ordered were super nice, they definitely have the bar right. The parking sucks. The only parking available is on the street, the parking that is associated with the property is all "hotel" parking, so no parking is available for the restaurant customers.... This is a big stinking strike for this place, but look past the inconvenience and the "snub" to restaurant customers and give it a try. read more

Counter order (so that whole tip-before-service awkwardness if you're paying with a card) for food that's priced at sit-down service prices. Delivery to table, fine. But the guy who took our order missed items for two out of three members of our party, one of whom simply ordered two of the same item (the only vegeterian taco offering)...somehow he got that as one taco. When he delivered the food, he apologized, took the rest of the order (again), took my credit card to cover that difference, then apparently placed the food at the back of the line in the kitchen. It took longer to get the REST of our food than it did to get our initial food. We appreciated that the ingredients are available for those with food allergies/sensitivities. The guy who took our order was quick to pull them out when we asked about one item. Gluten-free options and a couple vegetarian options beyond the typical salad go-to. Items listed on the menu as gluten-free, but I couldn't tell you if they're prepared in a gluten-free setting as the kitchen also prepares food for everyone. And the place is LOUD! But I decided not to book reservations for our group because several of us, including myself, are of an age when hearing is a problem in a noisy environment. There is absolutely no sound insulation inside the restaurant, and they're playing recorded music outside. What was great: Ambience is cozy, really pretty and welcoming. We tried the Guacamole with pork belly, was great, super tasty with subtle spicy notes and a great distribution of onion and tomatoes. The ceviche was really good but not great, missing a hint of salt and overall freshness. The carne was really well presented. The service between Oscar and Sam was really good. The carne plate was really good, good meat, seasoning and overall doneness. Things were there's room for improvement: service ,we could tell from the get go they were understaffed and rushed, which takes away from the experience at the same time I have to say that once the place a bit more empty the service was great, maybe come at a later time? . The bar measurements were off on the drinks ( 1 oz is a big change in a cocktail), it happened only on one drink, nevertheless, it felt way off. But after my experience yesterday I really want this place to thrive. It's the best Oaxacan style Mexican in a few years here. I had the steak taco with a chili oil / peanut sauce, the sea bass ceviche, and a chicken mole taco. Everything was so good and unique. The spirits, especially the Tequila, were clearly curated by someone who knows what they're doing. No autoclave additives Tequilas here.. you will not be bored by endless bottles of Don Julio 1942, Clase Azul or Casamigos. We're talking Fortaleza, 1146 Nom, Tapatio, Ocho, G4, and on and on.... if you know what I'm talking about here, you're already sold. I did, however, just have a PERFECT rum old fashioned. read more

Visiting SLO tonight, I noticed a new place opened across the street from Frank's'.... I had to drop in and see for myself! I love craft cocktails, and Condesa does not disappoint. I first tried the mezcal manhattan- smoky, botanical, essence of cherry. Great riff on a classic manhattan, with a mezcal spin... then a house old fashioned, again not a disappointment, quite the converse! Great ambiance, bartender Chris not only engaged his customers, but explained the process and ingredients in complicated house cocktails. Stopped in here to grab a quick cocktail after reading rave reviews, we were excited to try this spot out since our hotel was a block away. A bar back who attempted to take our order was clearly uneducated and proceeded to ask the *bartender* the answer to every question. The bartender refused to walk over to us. He looked at us with contention at the other end of the bar and proceeded to begrudgingly make our margs with a requested tequila. Finally we received the drinks, took one sip and realized they were incredibly too sweet even though we asked for less sugar. Then came the best part: the bill. The drinks suddenly went from $13 a piece to now $27 each! We didn't ask for 1942, just an upgrade to ocho which is a better tequila. The manager was called over and we asked him to just refund us, he said he *couldn't* and wanted to make it up to us. After the rude bartender and now the ridiculous up charge to LA prices, we were well over being there. We ended up just leaving, even after paying the $54 for nothing. If you want rude bartenders who won't acknowledge your existence, overpriced and underwhelming drinks, and terrible customer service...check this place out. Hugely disappointed and we will be contesting the charge. Pick any other place, there's a plethora of other bars that will treat you with kindness and respect without scamming you. Highly recommend Nightcap at the Granada hotel for incredible cocktails, a similar but way better ambience with the nicest bartenders in town. Feral is an excellent spot as well. read more

After reading all the great reviews I realize I should have paid attention to the not so great reviews. We came here to sample a bit of the food and drink people raved about. The Hubs and I arrived at 4:05 and the young lady asked if we had reservations (website says only need them for 8 or more),we said no then after consulting with the reservation book the hostess/server said okay we can seat you anyway. There were 2 larger parties, a 6 top and a 8 top (waiting for the rest of their party). And Us. We knew we wanted Margaritas and the Quesadilla Paradilla, however we never saw the server again to order. She seemingly waited for the 8 top to all arrive and then took their order, then casually chatted with that large party about idk even know what. We never got water, we never got another look, (and it's a small place) and by 4:40~35 minutes later, sadly we left with no food or drinks to review. read more

Gluten free gang gang, mount up! The menu is clearly labeled for gluten, and most of the things are gluten-free. There are also a myriad of vegetarian choices. We had several cocktails (lol) and they were all delicious, but my favorite being the jaguar moon. The restaurant was absolutely popping, so it took a long time to get our drinks, but we didn't mind because there was great people watching. Just a heads up that the seating at the bar and in the bar area is incredibly uncomfortable for a long period of time, so my recommendation is to grab one of the outside tables or one of the inside cozy booths. We never got one of our dishes, so it may be worthwhile to go during off peak times, which the lovely and friendly Victoria recommended as M-W. This is a very new restaurant. Only opened 4 months ago. I hope they succeed. The ambience was trendy and fun. The staff were attentive to our needs. The format was a little odd for a "sit-down restaurant", as one orders at a counter and pays first before picking a table and waiting for the food. The ambience of the place seemed more fitting for a restaurant with waitstaff service. Prices were good for what one was getting. All of the seafood was fresh and the cocktails were tasty. The pulpo was perfectly tender and was the best bite of the night. The only suggestions I have are: 1) The house-made fresh tortillas were delicious, but they needed to be cooked a tad longer to firm them up a bit. 2) The beef cuts in the Taco Arrachera were medium rare (on the rare side of that scale) and probably should have been cooked more medium to suit a taco presentation. The reason for that is, rarer meat, though more tender and tasty, is harder to bite through when one is eating a taco, which is a handheld, and demands a fork and a knife. 3) The Plato Del Mar was a strange flavor combination of a sweetly-glazed white fish (I think it was cod) on top of a bed of mushrooms and "oaxacan style" beans which were very savory and garlicky (I love garlic, but I still smelled like it the next day, after brushing my teeth and a shower). True Oaxacan beans are flavored using a type of tiny Oaxacan avocados (that's how it was when I went to Oaxaca) which have an anise-like flavor. Obviously, these are not found easily stateside, but can be easily be approximated with a light addition of anise. The almost flavorless cod was overwhelmed by the sweet glaze, which clashed with the strongly flavored beans underneath. Also, the mushrooms were somewhat strange. If I was making this dish, I would have chosen an oilier fish like sablefish or black cod, coated the skin with more of a miso-glaze and put it on a bed of huitlacoche (corn fungus- a type of mushroom) over a bed of mashed up steamed masa similar to what is found in tamales. I think they have the right idea about what they want to do, but just need to tighten it up a bit. I look forward to trying it again in a little while. read more

We stumbled onto this place as my husband and I were passing through traveling back to SD from Monterrey. WTF?! I'm Mexican born from a family of Authentic Mexican food cooks that spans many generations. I'm talking about: we've got Great-Grandmas recipe book that predates her even. It takes a lot to impress me. We had the Guacamole, Enchiladas, Mushroom Al Ajil, and Baja Fish Taco. Every plate was licked clean. We talked to the staff and sure enough the cook is straight from Mexico. Still, most restaurants opt to use the cheapest ingredients--which is why I never really like Mexican Food restaurants. I was actually drawn in by the drinks. We had a Mezcal Negroni. The restaurant has this 1920s jewel tone vibes so I was in the mood for something close to an old fashioned.... This drink was BETTER than an old-fashioned IMO... with that Smokey after taste from the Mezcal. The drink was exactly what I wished it to be. BUT THEN we were pleasantly duped into stopping in because not only was the drink top-tier--that food was legit! Stopped by this gem in SLO, and I was delighted by the sophistication of their cocktails. I was introduced to a number of Amari and liqueurs that I had never encountered before. I had the Hanky Palenque and the Añejo Manhattan, which were both 10/10! They had dimensions of flavor that I had not anticipated, but both were nicely balanced. The aguachile de camarón was next-level: bright, flavorful, and incredibly fresh. And the taco arrachera was the perfect finishing touch--simple, delicious, and exactly what I wanted to end the meal. This one hurt because I was so excited to come here on my weekend trip to SLO. Got there at 6:20 for a 6:30 reservation with my wife. Was told to wait by the bar while they got a table ready. 35 min later I asked for an update and the hostess admittedly said she totally forgot about us. No issue, she seated us. Once seated our order was taken. We waited nearly an hour with not a single meal on our table and no one even checked on us. We went up to our sever and asked if we can just pay for our drinks and leave and she didn't even care to ask why or apologize or let us know our food was on the way or anything. She just said here's the bill and we left. We were there for nearly 2 hours and no food was even served to us, not even the chips we asked for immediately upon being seated.
