The Brogue has been a traditional meet up spot for our friend group for several years now. We love the rustic environment and the beer selection. The food is always fantastic, too. We like to load up on the appetizers and share with the whole table. The service is always exceptionally polite and never keeps us waiting. The live music they have is always great, but if you're looking for a place for intimate conversation, live mic nights are not for you. Alternatively, you can sit out on the patio and be just fine. From reading other reviews, I have to say that the clientele can fluctuate depending on when you go. Families, couples, groups of adults/young adults are a frequent sight; like any other local joint it all varies. read more

Just had amazing dinner at The Brogue. While we eat here several times a week, I just had their Sesame Tuna with chilled soba noodle salad special. Amazing. Seriously one of the top three meals ever. We normally really enjoy the Old Brouge. However, unfortunate changes have occurred. One of my favorite menu items changed, and not for the better -- namely, the ribeye steak sandwich served was just leftover meat that was fatty and mostly uneatable. Our dinner companions were equally aghast. The Old Brogue was incredibly busy, so I waited until the next day to call and complain. While initially met with apologies from a manager, I was disappointed the promised follow-up did not occur. We've always liked the Old Brogue, but something has changed that has negatively impacted both quality and service. Old Brogue management, please return your former excellence. read more

Myself (British) and my Irish husband were excited to try out the Old Brogue. We've lived here a few years and hadn't made it out there yet, but needed to go to Great Falls so decided it would be the perfect excuse to finally go. It was disappointing to say the least. I have to disagree with another commenter that 'the Irish and their pubs have never been known for their food." Yes - they have. The food isn't supposed to be fancy, but it is supposed to be hearty, and good. Well here, it was all edible, but nothing to get excited about (and we do get very excited to find authentic food from home!). We started with the sausage rolls ('banger rolls', I am not sure why every Irish pub insists on calling sausages 'bangers' which is very much a British word for it). The pastry was good, but the sausage casing was tough and more like american/italian sausage, which is really different to how an Irish/English sausage is, especially a sausage roll where there shouldn't be casing at all. The worst part about that was the price - $8 for basically one sausage cut into 5 small pieces... really? Sadly my husband had ordered bangers and mash for his main meal, so had more tough casing to come. The mash was good, but the 'mushy peas' were not mushy peas at all! They were just overcooked canned garden peas, not marrowfat. I had the guinness beef pie, which was tasty enough, but filled with massive chunks of beef and potato which would have been much nicer a little smaller. On the side was a bizarre choice - raw green beans (slightly warm, but barely steamed). This was a really odd choice for a hearty 'Irish' dish. I was expecting some carrots in the pie, there might have been one.... I ordered tea, and was brought it with lemon and no milk.... when I asked for milk, I was asked if I wanted cream....?!! I had to settle for half and half. These things might seem picky, but it is the small things that add up to a good experience. Service was OK, nothing great. The atmosphere (5pm on a Friday) seemed ok, surprised no one was really drinking outside even though it was a great day. Overall, it was OK - might be better for American food, but I don't think we will bother going back to find out. read more

Food is pretty good but I removed a star for two reasons. One it's not very clean. I expect cleanliness in a restaurant. Two I don't feel they are family friendly. When one brings his family to eat on Father's Day so they can tell me " no children" it is so incredibly offensive I struggle to go back when my friends want to go there. My husband and I have been here as well as Katie's coffee house several times despite not having checked in. Each time we have been here the wait staff has been unfriendly and rush us to order after making us wait for service (this is for both sides of the restaurant). We came back only because we thought maybe they were having a bad/busy day. After waiting once again, we were seated by a seemingly unhappy employee. The restaurant was dead and service was extremely slow. We received water, which was from the tap and tasted horrendous (yes, I drink tap water, but this was really bad). The sign says happy hour is at 4pm but the server says there are no specials until 4:30pm. It took 25min to get our appetizers (we got the chicken wings) but the flavor was good. When 4:30pm finally rolled by our server came by with the "specials menu" but in stead of handing one to us, he tossed it on our table without saying anything and walked away. When the server came back, instead of asking if we wanted to get entrees he simply said "anything else?". At this point I was ready to get my food and leave so I ordered an entree for my husband and I to share and asked for my check. We ordered the Wednesday special "prime rib". I was not asked if I want everything on my baked potato, which I don't, so my husband had to eat it since it can out with everything on it. He said the bacon bits tasted like it had been sitting in old rancid oil. The prime rib was ordered medium rare but was clearly rare and the au jus was watery and weak. A popover came on top of the prime rib which was soggy and stale. The check was the quickest thing to come out as it only took 30 seconds to a minute to get, which I paid for and was astonished that the server came back and took the finished check before we even got our food instead of waiting till we leave(bad etiquette). The food's flavor was good but was over priced compared to the quality. It may finally be time for us to stop trying to make excuses for why the service is so bad and discontinue coming here. read more

The restaurant has a old dish rag moldy smell when you enter. Not too appetizing. The hummus was average and the veggies were just thrown on the plate. The pitas were nothing special. read more

I never review the OB because I'm a local and I don't like to complain about poor service at a place I frequent. And its true, service here is very hit or miss. Our recent outing we hit the lottery though--the guy was a true professional. Food came out promptly, he looked out for us and was patient with the kiddos. This place is one of the great gathering places in our little village of Great Falls and I would give it 5 stars but for one problem - smoking. I was disappointed that it took a Virginia law to get them to ban smoking inside. Now, it looks like the smoking has moved to the front patio where neither you nor your children can avoid breathing it to get into the restaurant. Okay, it's the beer and atmosphere of an Irish pub that get's me in the door usually. Even though I am of Irish genes, it's typically not the food that calls my name. That is not the case with Old Brogue. You can go to this place on its good tasting food alone. I had the salmon salad that had cranberries, aged cheese and a ginger soy dressing. It was a huge portion and I ate every last morsel. My sons got the fish and chips-lovely, fresh and flaky. My husband ordered the Shepherd's pie and loved it too. There was a nice selection of kids meals, from mac n cheese to steak medallions and fish and chips. Beer was of course plentiful and many types on draft. As we were leaving we walked through Katie's coffee shop which is connected to it by just a doorway - and apparently Old Brogue uses this space for dinner time. It was comfortable and warm with a fireplace going! The only reason I gave it one star short of 5 was because of the price. It cost my family of 5 just over $100 for lunch with a couple beers. Pretty pricey for a lunch. Looks like if we go there again, it will be date night. read more

My husband and I found this on Yelp after a 4 hour hike on a beautiful fall day in River Bend Park. We were delighted! We sat outside in the patio area, maples with red leaves were across the parking area. A bar-height fire pit gas fire was going at one table. Then came the food--a fabulous goat cheese, pear, and walnut salad and a delicious turkey stuffing with cranberry sandwich. Pretty perfect! read more

This is a wonderful, neighborhood pub! We live close by and go at least once a week - food is always very good and the service is excellent and fun. However, we never go on St. Patty's Day - prefer to leave that event to the out-of-towners. If that is the only day you go to the Brogue, you may get a distorted opinion of what the establishment is like the other 364 days of the year. I think this place prefers the locals. I've been there with friends who live in town and it's a great, almost family experience. It's slightly below average when they don't know you (i.e. slower service, less conversation etc.) I still like it. I just go when I'm with people I know from town. read more

We are from out of town and met friends here for dinner. Cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. I enjoyed my steak salad and the Shephard's pie was fantastic. The fish and chips came in a large portion and was likewise pretty darn good. My husband ordered the corned beef and cabbage -- it was good but I think for his palate he would have preferred more flavor. However, I thought it was great. Not sure when we'll be around here again but I would definitely visit again. read more

Great place to go for a black and tan -- the bar tenders know their stuff! Other drinks from the bar were fine. Service is good too. But the food leaves much to be desired. Fish & chips were unevenly cooked and oily. One in our party had to send his plate back, which was replaced by the time everyone else had eaten. French onion soup wasn't hot, but otherwise OK. The Old Brogue has hands down the best Reuben I've ever had, but everything else there is just as good too. The fish and chips, shepherd's pie, steaks and other specials have always been the quality I've come to expect from this great pub in Great Falls. My only complaint about the food is that the appetizers (while absolutely delicious) tend to be a bit on the small size for your buck. Otherwise, the Old Brogue gets a thumbs up all around. The Old Brogue does tend to host events later in the evening, and it can get pretty crowded, but they have a lot of space to work with. I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for some classic Irish or American fare. read more
