Very unorganized wait staff. We waited 45 min. after being told a 15 min. wait. From there the staff was very overwhelmed with two larger parties. Once we finally got seated and an oder placed the food was not bad. Portions could have been a little larger but taste was good. I think with some proper staffing this would be a great place, but at this rate is on a path of failure. read more

Went there while traveling in Late March 2013. We had skipped breakfast and were anticipating a really good lunch, and willing to pay more for something out of the ordinary. We thought we had found it here, but the quaint antique decor fooled us. The menu offered a basket of four "slices" of bread for $3, or 80 cents per slice. Most restaurants provide a basket of bread for free, so I was expecting some really nice crusty artisan bread for $3. But we were served a basket of four small tasteless biscuits that left us longing for pillsbury biscuits in a can. We sent them back. The $11 "prime rib" sandwich was an awful lot like an Arby's French Dip sandwich, but fattier and with less meat. If it hadn't come with "au jous" for dipping, I'd not have bothered to eat it at all, but that saved it. French fries that came with it were frozen fries, nothing special. Dining companion got the homemade potato chips that might have been good but they were way overcooked. His hamburger was nothing special either - same thing you could get in any bar anytime. Our $30+ lunch was a HUGE disappointment. We could have gotten better food at Arby;s for $12, and I don't truly think much of Arby's, but we did see one less than two miles from this place. Came here because of the history and previously posted reviews. It is the Friday before the Fourth of July but I must say I am totally disappointed with the service. There were about 4 staff members behind the bar and we sat unnoticed for about 15 minutes. No one bothered to say "I'll be right with you" or "just a moment" we just sat there as if we didn't exist. The waitress we had was totally lost. Had never worked the bar before. The other waitresses were no help to her. I watched other patrons frustration as they waited on someone to ask if they needed anything. Good came out lukewarm. I really liked the bourbon sauce on my pulled pork but the meal fell flat. Our waitress failed to bring any dining utensils, napkins, or ask if we needed anything. I felt as if she methodically didn't ask if we needed anything so she wouldn't have to do anything. Very disappointed over all. The cherry on top is the bathroom stall that is out of order leaving only one restroom on a busy Friday before a holiday. Disappointed. read more

Hot brown was suggested by friends and is a staple....ew gross. Good thing I was drunk from previous bourbon tastings and could actually eat it. OK I need to retract my last review. Everyone has a bad day. I found this place to be enchanting.

I have read some of the previous posts and maybe we were there on a bad night. My parents and I came to this restaurant because it was highly recomended in all the Bourbon Trail pamplets we read. I will say that the food was amazing. My parents got the Mahi Mahi and chicken fried steak. I got the ribeye cooked medium. None of these items take 30 minutes to prepare. And that's exactly what happened. I ended up saying something to a server who said he'd talk to the manager. Our server never said anything to us. Our appetizers and drinks were long done before our food finally made it to our table. When our food finally made it, the food was delicious. However, to add insult to injury, my steak was not cooked medium, it was rare. When our bill arrived, delivered by our server, there was a 20% comp on the bill. It actually said on the bill "waited too long for food". I work in the industry, so I think what upsets me the most was the fact that the manager never came over to say something to us, it was never explained why it took so long to get our food. There was also a couple tables around us that got their food and left before we even got our food. As I said, the food was delicious even though my steak was cooked incorrectly. Our waitress told us to visit the Jesse James room upstairs while we waited for our food . this was perfect for our kids. I had the walnut chicken which was out of this world. If I could have rated Old Talbott Tavern a zero I would. Why....because we could not get waited on. We were staying at the Inn for two nights. We started with a drink in the bourbon bar on Tuesday, July 16th. Adam was an amazing bartender. We decided to have dinner in the dining room. This was definitely a mistake. My family was seated and I stayed behind to pay the bill in the bar. Adam was getting a food order so it took awhile. He was apologetic but I told him, no worries, we are on vacation. It took about 10 minutes. When I went into the dining my family was still waiting to be acknowledged. Another 10 minutes went by and finally my husband approached who we believe was the manager. She dashed into the kitchen. We assumed things would change. It didn't. In fact, a gentleman was seated after my husband relayed the situation and out came a waitress, passed right by our table, and waited on him. It was time to leave. As we were leaving I made sure the so called manager, hostess and a waitress knew what happened. Headed across the street and had a wonderful meal. Service was amazing and the food was delicious. Check my other reviews for some great places to eat in Bardstown. I gave it almost 24 hours, assuming someone would reach out to us. We were staying at the Inn and what I believed was the so-called manager checked us in. Never happened. Spoke to a manager the next day on our way to dinner. She was unaware of anything happening. Although the ambiance at Old Tabott Tavern is really nice, the food just doesn't live up to the popularity of the tavern. Our service that night was decent, although we'd heard from people the previous evening that it wasn't the greatest. Our food, however, was a disappointment. I had the Mahi Mahi and my friend had the Fried Catfish. My fish (which I don't believe was Mahi Mahi) was covered in a decent parmesan garlic sauce and cheese, was quite overcooked and bland. My mashed potatoes were decent, but my side salad was what can only be described as stale. The greens were floppy and there were exactly two small cherry tomatoes and four tiny pieces of cucumber. The homemade ranch dressing was bland as well. My friend had catfish and it was way overcooked, and tasted as if it had been cooked in old fry grease. She mentioned that her green beans were tasteless but the baked potato was ok. I forgot to mention that we ordered fried green tomatoes as an appetizer and they were incredibly bland and also tasted as if they had been cooked in old grease. They were also served with the boring ranch. All in all, the meal was over-priced and boring. The plus for the night, however was the musician playing in the bar. Scott Honaker played and he was simply amazing. The tavern would be smart to hire him again. Hearing him would be the only reason I'd go back. read more

This is one the coolest places I've ever been to! A restaurant and hotel built in 1779. Who could ask for more? Hotel was very unique because a lot of famous people stayed here, like Jesse James, Abraham Lincoln and Daniel Boone. I love after 200 years this place is still up and running. I'm very happy they kept up with the updates and kept this place up to code. The restaurant part was very cool and unique and how you can sit down and look at what it look like back in the day. Original floors to original ceilings to just original everything. The food was really amazing. I got the turkey sandwiches and I will say I was not expecting it to be that good. Simple but elegant. The sweet tea here is probably the best I've ever had in the state.( not better than mine but close. :p) Service here was excellent. Our server constantly told us stories about the hotel and the area and just was a great server. I will say this is one the best restaurants I could imagine going to all the time. I don't know if I would stay in the hotel where Jesse James got shot at but I will say I love to eat here. read more

The ambiance was nice (****) and the service by Chris was friendly and excellent (*****). The food, as others have commented, was average (***). The Burgoo, a kind of Kentucky gumbo, was over-seasoned with cayenne. Not a disappointing experience, because we dropped in for a quick meal, but nothing overly special. Great selection of bourbons (117 I counted) and if you get the attention of servers early, you get looked after but I saw a few customers wait quite a while, even when not busy. I had some very good (and quite large wings) but the bourbon-sauced meatballs were great. The wife, daughter and I stopped by Bardstown last year (08) to attend an antique show and found two restaurants that we truly enjoyed in that town - Old Talbott and Kurtz, both had fantastic home cooked southern style food. I wanted to find a reason to go back, and living in Indy we decided that the trip would be worth it to revisit the antique show and eat at both restaurants a year later. The trip ended up being a nightmare, sad to say, but true. Living in Indy, the land of chain restaurants, it is fun to get away and have some good home-cooked food, but this time everything that could go wrong did go wrong. We spent the night at Bardstown and had dinner at the Talbott the next day. My first visit I had the iron skillet fried chicken, hands down the best fried chicken I have ever had, on our FIRST visit. When we went back I again ordered the chicken, it is a 45 minute wait, but hey, it gives you an excuse to test the bourbon menu. I ordered (as before) all white meat as did my wife. After waiting over an hour we finally received our food. I noticed that I had the traditonal leg, thigh, wing and breast as did my wife. I told the waiter the problem and he went back to the cook and the cook said they run out of all white meat. I did not accept this excuse and asked for the manager. I instead got the hostess who relayed the message back to the manager who in turn told the hostess that she could drop the extra charge of $2.00 for all white meat. A whopping deal to save a customer, NOT. I told the hostess that I was not paying for a meal that I did not order (I hate dark meat) so she said she would get the manager.......10 minutes later the manager came out and said she would drop the price of my daughters cheese fries. Again I told her I was not paying for something I did not order. At this time she said ok I wil not charge you for your meal and said she would be back with the total for our meal.......10-15 minutes later I had to complain to the waiter and FINALLY the manager came back and we were able to pay and get the heck out of the establishment. Oh, and my wife had to pay for her dark meat that she did not order. On top of everything, the most IMPORTANT part of the whole experience was..........the chicken was overcooked and terrible. When you overcooked a fried food the breading starts to seperated from the food and that is how I know and my tastebuds also knew, talk about being disappointed. Driving through Bardstown looking for somewhere quaint and Kentuckian to have dinner, we saw the gorgeous stone facade of the Old Talbott Tavern. The Yelp reviews were great, so we went for it. First the good: the burgoo was rich and meaty, and our server was a smiley, courteous young man who was great at his job. The bad? The hotbrown is an abomination. Wonder bread covered in condensed soup (we think?) with some cold-cuts on top. Sides were straight out of a can. The pickle chips were novel but ultimately nausea-inducing. 15 dollars an entree for one of the worst dinners in my recent memory. We deeply regret not going to the generic but competent-looking nouvelle cuisine place across the street. read more

It was advertised a good bit on the internet and in the area as a place that you have to stop and eat at. I just was not impressed with the food at all. The staff was all very friendly and the environment was even nice. Just the prices and quality of the food do not match up at all. We came in for a late dinner and weren't starving so we decided to just share some appetizers. We got the steak bites, which were incredibly overdone and had no flavor at all. Then we also got the southern fried sampler plater- fried green tomatoes, fried banana peppers, and fried pickles all tasted exactly the same with a very heavy batter that was just greasy and awful. 22$ wasted in my opinion and just very grateful we didn't get any larger entrees. Had an early dinner here the other night. The server was very nice and attentive to my needs. She did not rush me nor ignore me. I had the drink called Side Car Named Desire. If you like a sweet drink, then it is a good choice. It kind of tasted like kool-aid with bourbon in it. I started with the Burgoo, it was really good! The cornbread is a sweet cornbread, but still very delicious. I had the pork chop with mash potatoes and green beans... I was questioning the mango BBQ on the chop at first but when it arrived it was perfect! Everything tasted wonderful and was freshly cooked!
