I received some gifts from The Olive Mill for Christmas: bruschetta topping, fig balsamic and herbed oil and vinegar. Oh lordy -- they are delicious. It makes me so happy to know that I can find olive oil, balsamic vinegar and tasty things to nibble on right here in Carmel. I have driven by The Olive Mill many times -- it's located right on the corner of Main Street and Rangeline Road -- but I had never stopped in. But now that I know how great their products are, I'll be visiting for more. The bruschetta topping was probably the best I've ever tasted. I made bruschetta with it on top of some toasted bread, with huge plops of burrata on top of everything. This is now my favorite thing to eat. If you like quality olive oil, vinegars and foods that go with these things, I highly recommend checking this place out. read more

STAPLES IN MY KITCHEN!! I cannot talk highly enough about the products and staff of this place. The location is right on the corner of Main Street and Rangeline in downtown Carmel. The spice wall is immediately to your left when you walk in and the Vulcans Fire Salt, Rocky Mountain, Truffle Parmesan, and my #1 cannot live without is the Pizza Seasoning... I'm hooked on it! The remaining of the store is olive oil heaven. I always have a large bottle of the Garlic on hand for salad dressings and giving my dishes an extra flavor. The white lemon balsamic is an excellent addition to salads for a refreshing taste. Looking to spice up your cooking? Stop in here! As I pulled up to the Olive Mill there is a parking lot behind the store. There is also parking for disabilities. As I approached the store I observed big picture windows that were decorated for the season. As I entered the store I was greeted by the staff. On one side of the store there is barrels of oil, on the other side of the store there is barrels of vinegar. There are sample cups provided for sampling the vinegar and oil. LOTS OF FUN! Once the item is selected, the staff will fill the bottle. They seal the bottles and add cute labels to identify the contents in the bottle. I like the presentation of the bottles, so cute! This is a great experience, prices are reasonable. I was not rushed, rather encouraged to sample more vinegar and oil. The checkout was fast and easy. Although it probably sounds like I go out for every meal, I do enjoy a yummy dish at home too. So, when I was walking along Main St in Carmel, I was drawn to this combo Olive oil/Balsamic vinegar/spice business at the corner of Rangeline. This is the third store in the Midwest and I was totally impressed with the quality of the items offered. I was greeted by a man who was running the counter and he explained how the different "islands" were set up: The first (closest to the door) had a dozen tanks of flavored Balsamic Vinegars. Each stainless tank had a small spigot on front that allowed you to pour a small sample into the handy mini paper cups for a tasting. Wow! There were so many great flavors that I was hard pressed to decide. (I ended up selecting a small bottle of Red Apple Balsamic and a White Peach Balsamic. Yum!) The second island was set up the same as the first, but held savory olive oils. Again, it was self help for tastings and here I found most had combinations of herbs or citrus. I selected a bacon infused oil that I can't wait to try with either salads or as a base for frying a burger. There was also a third island for unflavored olive oils that were from different varieties/locations to choose from. The wall had shelves lined with spices and salts that also was setup so that you could taste them. Great idea! I ended up with a shaker of Tuscan spices that I've been looking for. When I made my decision, the manager (?) filled bottles for me from the same steel containers as my tastings. He then sealed the bottles (I didn't pay close attention to see how he did that since I was still browsing the spices.) This is a specialty item store with a product that takes time to prepare and is also perishable. So don't go in thinking you are going to get cheap grocery store prices for these things (even groceries aren't cheap.) However, if you take your time and sample the flavors, I am sure you will find something unique and delicious to add to your pantry. (Be sure to keep the oils in the dark after opening to avoid having sun damage. Fortunately, the bottles are made of colored glass to help preserve the quality inside.) I found the service to be quite knowledgeable and friendly. No sales pressure at all. I was advised that they have a points program that offers rewards after certain totals are achieved. The Olive Mill is a fun stop. The guys working there are always super nice and helpful. They have so many different and unique olive oils and balsamic vinegar! We bought 2 balsamic bottles, black cherry and chocolate and they are amazing on fresh strawberries! We had fun tasting all the different options they had. It was hard to narrow it down and we can't wait to try something new next time. I really enjoy popping in the nights of the Gallery Walk. They usually have some fun baked items they make using the oils and balsamic vinegar! I love the brownies with orange, the cookies with raspberry and once we had a good lemon one! I bet they know a ton of ideas to experiment with the oils and vinegar! They also had lots of spices and seasonings. This little oil shop is adorable! Recently opened this summer, you are able to taste test all the flavors and produce your own concoction. They also sell plenty of common goods such as recipe books, bottles, pourers, and all things bread & oil! Love the idea of making my own blend and great for gifts! Downside: They do not provide bread to taste the oils, you either drink it or I like to dip my finger in my little cups... they may have changed this but I think it should be a must to have some bread around! read more

Oh boy. I'm not sure if I'm thrilled or devastated to have found this place. On one hand: OMG, life-changing culinary options, on the other hand: OMG, I'm going to need to buy bigger jeans So, wandered in here last weekend on a rare trip to Carmel and instantly loved the vibe, which was (Sorry Carmel) unexpectedly laid back and genuine. The shopkeepers greeted us warmly and then we were free to wander and try as many of their (amazeballs) oils and balsamics as we wanted. No pressure, no expectation. I can only speak to the olive oil selection, as I'm not a fan of balsamics (though I will say my friend, who is a balsamic fan, nearly lost his mind and ended up leaving with a bottle that he's not sure will last the week) but, oh, let me count the ways that you will love this olive oil selection: 1. Every infused oil is a flavor explosion that will inspire you to think of ways to put it to use. Truffle oil drizzled on eggs, sundried tomato oil tossed with fresh pasta, lemon oil made into a basil-mint pesto, garlic oil for roasted veggies... the possibilities are endless. And if you're short on your own inspiration, ask the experts running the shop, they'll give you plenty of ideas 2. The fresh pressings of pure olive oil will make you rethink your $7 grocery store olive oil forever. These olive oils have tasting notes like fine wines and they are DELICIOUS. I've heard chefs say that you should never cook with a wine you won't drink.. same with olive oil. If you don't enjoy the taste of your olive oil, why put it in your food? You WILL enjoy the taste of these pure, fresh oils. 3. Do the math on cost. Sure, it's more expensive than your crappy grocery store olive oil, but if you love food and flavor, then consider that $17 for their small-sized bottle, which will last several months (unless, like me, you're currently existing on a diet entirely of truffle-infused olive oil and Amelia's savory city loaf... I'm just sayin') will make so many things you cook and eat SO much more delicious for less than a moderate Starbucks habit. It's a worthy and super approachable investment. I always joke (kinda joke) that, as a downtowner who both lives and works downtown, I have no reason to venture north of 16th street. They have a great variety of different flavored olive oils and balsamic vinegars, as well as spices and salts, rubs, little randoms like walnut and pistachio oils, and a small assortment of nice gifts like oil dipping dishes. This yummy-smelling shop is a fun place to go whether you're a seasoned chef or just want to try some cool new flavors in your cooking! It's a little overwhelming to know what to pick at first, but they have little cups for tasting everything and the owner is very helpful. He'll give you tips and ideas on how to use or cook with anything you pick. I used to love this place; the staff was always friendly and helpful. However, I had a very bad experience recently; so bad that I will never go back despite how much I like their balsamic vinegar. On a Saturday in March I showed up to the store to get a refill on my balsamic vinegar. The employee (only one in the store) was on the phone. I stood where he could see me, but he never acknowledged my existence. After about 5 minutes, I noticed that there was a round table with 3 bottles of balsamic vinegar and many small disposable cups for tasting. I walked up to pick up a bottle to look at the flavor, and this employee immediately yelled at me that I was not to touch anything. I backed off immediately, and he told the customer on the phone, infront of me, that a customer in the store was giving him a hard time. I decided to walk closer to the door, farther away from him, to wait. After he hang up, he never came over to ask me what I needed. I waited, and then asked him if he was ready to help me. He walked up, with a look of displeasure, and an unfriendly tone, yelling at me that I must obey all the procedures in the store. At that time I decided to just leave. read more

I've passed this shop a few times and after listening to a special on NPR over Olive Oil felt I was ready to try a few specialty oils armed with a bit of knowledge. I was looking for an olive oil that was unique and specifically used for finishing a dish vs cooking. I use quite a few flavored olive oils in cooking was looking for a high end specialty oil as a splurge. The cups are actually not a bad thing as the oil should be felt on the tongue as well as tasted to appreciate the delicacy of the blends. However, I agree the samples are delicious and instantly a craving for steaming French bread is inevitable. The decor is adorable. The owner was friendly and helpful when we had questions but was also discreet enough to let us browse without being intrusive. The mixed spices in the back are a definite bonus. A lot of varieties for mixes as well as exotic salts and peppercorns. I recommend planning for at least 20 mins to allow time to sample a few. My absolute favorite item is the Tuscany Balsamic vinegar. If you enjoy cooking this location should be added to your list of favorite ingredient stops! Adorable gift packs also make a great gift idea. Due to the shelf life and wish to try several varieties I brought along a friend to split the cost of a bottle. It was fun to stop here during the Art Walk. They have tons of spices, olive oils and balsamic. It was cool to see and taste all the different kinds. Tasting balsamic was more fun I think. We ended up with black cherry and chocolate. The chocolate balsamic is amazing over strawberries. We also kind to taste some goodies that had made special for the walk. I have frequented the Olive Mill several times and have enjoyed a number of their Oils and Vinegars. Most of them are terrific. Recently I purchased 3-4 bottles of a combination of the oils and delicious vinegars. After I tried my selected oil on several entres after getting home, I no longer cared for one of the flavors. I called the manager, (who btw, gives Carmel the definition of the attitude that so many people think we all have in Carmel-not good). I explained that I had purchased and tried several oils and vinegars (and dropped a chunk of change), and wasn't happy with one of them and asked if I had any options to return it. He said that is why they allow tastings (I understand that, but I had tried several and I think my bottle tasted stronger and I didn't care for it after getting it home and putting it on some things). Very politely I asked if there was a chance that I could get one that I knew I liked, and (after correcting my pronunciation of 'Province ' and giving me the French pronunciation) he basically said no that I was stuck with it. If you don't allow for an occasional unhappy customer with buyers remorse, don't expect return buyers, especially with that kind of an attitude. read more
