My wife's Sicilian and I've eaten a lot of pizza from Sicily myself. It might be unfair but the pizza was nothing special. If the pizza doesn't start in a brick oven stop recommending it. The pizza tastes pretty much like Ci Ci's, not that great, typical American version. Don't make any special efforts to get there. read more

Had a "welcome to the neighborhood" certificate for a free large pizza. It was delicious, and the counter guy was super nice. I felt kind of bad that my friends and I took the only three seats in the place though. It's definitely not a sit-down kind of joint. So if you need pizza to soak up all the booze while you stumble home, this is the place for you. I moved to Austin from the NoVA/DC area where they are famous for their 'jumbo slice' found in Adams Morgan. These suckers were HUGE and took up three paper plates for one slice. I came to Austin and was so disheartened when I had the pizza from Roppolo's and that other place on 6th. I figured there was no way I was ever going to be able to eat late night pizza again - until I found the Onion. Salvation was found in a small pizzeria on 6th street where, if you go towards bar closing time, has a line well out the door - but of course, the wait its worth it. Grab a bottle of water and the tomato basil - you won't regret it and you'll thank yourself in the morning (when your hangover isn't nearly as severe). read more

The Onion is definitely my favorite pizza place downtown and in the running for favorite pizza in Austin (along with Eastside Pies and Austin Pizza). I go there almost as a religious pilgrimage each week (not Mondays though, they are closed). For a light lunch that's easy on the wallet, they have a slice and soda special for $3.25. I like their chicken pizza slices rounded up with various toppings of sorts or their magharita pizza which kicks ass and takes names. These are thin foldable delicious slices of pizza. I try not to concentrate on the less than clean environment and ignore the fact that the countertops probably have never embraced the sweet love of a rag. Sanitary conditions aside, major props to the Onion for their great pizza. read more

I am a huge fan of the Onion! Every time I have been there my pizza has been fresh, warm, and just cheesy goodness. Besides the late night partiers going (obviously I am one of them) going there at 2am and crowding the place, I have never had a bad expierence. What I like about their pizza besides the basic incredients of all pizza is their sauce. It has this spicy kick to it that I can never get enough of. The employees have always been nice to be. There is one guy who is very sarcastic and you just gotta get on his good side and after he sees your not just a drunk bimbo, he is pretty cool with you. Besides the pizza, they take care of some of the other fellow downtown employees. Which is always fantastic when you can not get out of work and your trying to stay on a decent budget. I also love that fact that the guy who has delivered my pizza has remembered my name and when he walks through, he always greats me. Prices are reasonable for what you get. The only downfall is there is not much room to sit and enjoy. So its a place to get your pizza than go. read more

Do I have to even give it one star? So this guy makes and sells pizza--that's the business model as seen from the street? Well, I wanted to buy pizza and he refused to let me. Here's what happened: Saturday night, bars are closed, lots of drunk hungry people all about town. I'm visiting from San Francisco where slices are aplenty and the people who make them actually WANT to sell them (and are nice about it). Some locals showed us to The Onion for a slice. There were 8 of us. We waited in line, got to the front, ordered 8 slices ( 8 people = 8 slices; nothing malicious there). Sign said $3.25 a slice. ($3.25 x 8 = $26). We were told it would be "the cost of a full pie" which was over $30. "Wait, what? But the sign says $3.25." After some back and forth with the gremlin behind the counter who got WAY heated WAY more quickly than was reasonable, my friend said, "Alrighty, we'll take 2." We take 2, and pay. Then we order 2 more. And then it escalates: the hairy pizza making dude comes out from the back. He proceeds to scream at my friend and tell us to "Get the fuck out." Good business skills dude. He rants about us "wiping out" his pizza (that is the goal, right, to sell it?) and again tells us to "Get the fuck out." (Again, 8 people, 8 slices ordered; we weren't trying to screw the guy). We walk outside, he follows and then proceeds to SCREAM in my friend's face (a nice woman, a mom of two small children, a person who is not drunk or behaving poorly) that she is a "Fucking bitch." Our awesome other friends proceed to throw the slices we PAID for at him for being such a disrespectful ass. He keeps going as we walk away, screaming at my friend's husband, our other friend and then it gets even better: he then refers to me as a "fucking whore." OK, so (1) I was not doing anything whore-esque. I was trying to order pizza that he was allegedly selling; (2) If you thought I was being rude, the proper phrase is bitch. Telling you that YOUR business model is to sell pizza which you refuse to sell is not a "whore"-like activity. Needless to say, this guy was a total ass, he was unreasonably pissed about our desire to buy the pizza he was selling and he did not have the Texas hospitality the rest of Austin did. Sir, you're an asshole. And the woman at the counter, she was a BITCH, not a whore. read more

I never write reviews, but I really love this place. If you live downtown or need a great slice while downtown, there is no better place. The Uberoni is a can't miss for meat eaters. My wife says they have great non-meat pizzas, but that's just not something I would ever consider. The pizza sauce is spicy, not crazy hot, and great. The people who run the place are always friendly and cool. And the prices are insanely low. Most pizza downtown is like ketchup on cardboard. This place is a diamond in the rough, love it. read more

I had a veggie slice which came with Onions, black olives and broccoli and went to bed satisfied. We bought more than we can eat so I had a slice of cheese in the morning and it tasted great in the morning too. I'm going to keep this short and sweet. It's not everyday that the simplest of things can leave such a resounding effect on your palette like what occurred after eating at The Onion. While conversing and taking a smoke break outside of a bar in downtown Austin, my road trip partner in crime pointed at what looked like a small pizza business establishment. Without a moment's hesitation we walked in, grabbed large slices of soft, thin crust pizza, and indulged on the great savory flavor. Holding a beer in one hand, with a great tasting pizza in the other, and standing around chit chatting with good company truly is one of the simplest pleasures in life. They offer pedicabbers a discount and they are always smiling and it is warm in there. Try the tomato, basil and pesto. I was in town for a conference, and The Onion was HIGHLY recommended by the staff at my hotel. The sauce was very "tinny" tasting; there was nothing fresh about it. The crust was flimsy. The cheese was rubbery. The only two good things about my slice were the pepperoni and the price. Since I'm a Chicagoan, I do have a higher standard for pizza. Even my local dive pizza joints in Chicago turn out better pies than this place. I think the high ratings must come from the late night crowd. I've been here for lunch several times over the years so can't speak to evenings or other experiences. Lunch is quiet and reasonably priced. It always seems a bit slow. There's usually 3-4 different pizzas by the slice to choose from with two slices for $6.50. I like the pizza here because the sauce is a bit thicker and spicier than a lot of other pizzas. The slices are a good size and two will fill you up, perhaps just one if you're on the smaller side. The wait is usually short and the food consistently pretty good. For years I've been coming here and at the old location to get a slice whenever I get the craving. The spicy sauce on the pepperoni is really good, but the best pizza they have is the bbq chicken. If you haven't tried it, I think it might be the best slice in Austin. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have it out very often anymore, so you may have to order a pie. Stumbled upon this pizza spot since I was a bit hungry and needed something small to hold me down til dinner. My driver from earlier in the day told us about this pizza spot and said it's one of the better ones in town. Visually, the pizza looked better than what 6th street pizza was offering by a mile. Noticing the price of $4.50 a slice is a bit much and I live in NY where a pizza slice doesn't even cost that much. Had the meat lovers slice and it was soggy and super greasy. I could barely hold up the pizza without it falling apart. Sorry but if that was one of the better pizza spots by the slice in the downtown Austin area, that is disappointing. read more

Saw great reviews on yelp, so my coworker and I decided to try something different for lunch. We were both excited to try it since it had such great reviews. What a disappointment. We both got the lunch combo - a slice of cheese and a greek salad. The salad was by far superior to the pizza. The best way I could describe the pizza was, "this must get great reviews because it's open late and it is perfect if you are too drunk to know better." The crust was undercooked and soft with the texture and taste of a public school lunch pizza. The sauce was nothing special, and the cheese was rubbery. Wouldn't recommend it. Not sure what happened - maybe we were there on an off day - but I'm being generous with 2 stars on this one... At least it was cheap? read more

It was around 10pm and I could not find any place to eat after a long day of flying, i walked up Brazos St. and found a sign that said "PIZZA" I walked in and was greeted immediately by a very nice young woman who welcomed me. I saw what looked like amazing pie slices in the window and tried the pepperoni and sausage. WOW. perfect crust, cheese and meat! I had to get another slice and added a pep slice. I had a great conversation with the young woman and the man working the evening shift. Super down to earth and very nice people. I am a fan and will return here on my next Austin layover.
