The Onion Bar & Grill is one of the classic Spokane bars that feels very busy and lively the second you walk in. The place was quiet when I got there at 5, but shortly after, it was packed with people eating, drinking, and watching sports on TV. The atmosphere was really fun and casual, but ideally you should be here with a group. I also really liked their cider, especially my pineapple cider, super refreshing and easy to drink. For food, we ordered the grilled salmon, bacon stuffed tater tots, cougar gold cheese dip, and onion rings. Honestly, everything leaned pretty oily and greasy, but that was kind of on us for ordering the cheesiest combo possible. The tater tots and cheese dip were still super satisfying comfort food though. Overall, a fun spot for groups, drinks, and game nights downtown. read more

The ambience at this place is amazing - the building looks pretty old and has some very ornate wooden cabinetry as well as a beautiful ceiling. when we arrived in Spokane tonight we wanted to have something good so we headed here. When we walked in, they were pretty busy so we sat at the bar and quickly ordered the cougar gold cheese dip. Now I went to Washington State University. This is where the cougar gold cheese is made and of course I wanted to try the dip! Now the big problem we had with the restaurant had to do with silverware - we had none! And as we were sitting at the bar on a busy Friday night, it's not like the bartender was readily available to give us some. The good thing is that when the cheese dip came? We did not need silverware - and boy was that dip good! So that was a resounding success - the dip that is. So we put our name in for a table at the same time we were seated at the bar, so we moved over to a small table when our dinner arrived! I had the cougar gold burger (natch) and hubby had the pot roast sandwich - now let me tell you, the cougar Gold burger was fantastic - and hubby really enjoyed the pot roast sandwich which came with some au jus. For me? The french fries came with fry sauce! Yes! Finally fry sauce is readily available at some restaurants now! It's not good for you - but it tastes fantastic! Truth be told, we have eaten at this restaurant before, but have never rated it. So the only thing that rated the demerit? It was just simply the fact that there was no silverware or napkins given to us until we had to ask - we shouldn't have had to ask. But I can tell you we will always choose to come here when we make it to Spokane. And that's a pretty good sign don't you think? read more

My husband and I went for Valentine's Day lunch. We went on Sunday around 2 PM. We were quoted 10 minute wait but it was around 25 minutes. We waited in the front of house area. There was a kids play area and restrooms near the front door. The waiting area smelled like bathroom chemicals. We ordered the large chicken nachos. The large nacho portion was small. I can't imagine what the normal nacho portion would've been. The chicken was super dry! The amount of chicken was disappointing as well. My husband ordered the bacon cheddar avocado burger. My husband liked his burger, juicy and medium patties. I ordered the wild mushroom burger. My burger was well done, no pink. The pepper sauce was tasty, the burger needed the moisture. On our quest for yummy Bloody Marys we stopped into the Onion today for a try. It's called The Kraken. Not on the menu but we had seen it offered. 22.00 each and it is topped with a lunch meal. Only a pic of one of them...mine fell over when they brought it out. The food sampling was tasty. Chicken tender, 2 shrimp, 2 bacon, 3 potato bacon balls, pickle and an onion ring. It was a large Bloody Mary, a bit strong and not a lot of flavor in the mix. Salted rim was missing. Can't give it a 5* but it was good. read more

The onion is a fantastic pun in Spokane! The service was wonderful just personable enough to engage a single diner while remaining attentive to other patrons. She was fast too. I ordered the Japanese rice beer that really hit the spot while I took in the very old school decore. They won me with the vintage Harley in the center of the dining area. The place has a really laid back vibe. I had the stuffed tots, a must order item. House made and satisfying l, add the cougar cheese sauce and you are in heaven. The Elk chopped steak was top shelf I highly recommend it. I opted for the pea salad instead of fries. That's with a try it was delicious and different. Easy street parking Friendly service We tried The Onion and had a mix of amazing and not-so-amazing experiences. The French press coffee served in glass mugs was some of the best coffee I've ever had -- smooth, rich, and such a nice touch presentation-wise. The small chicken nachos were delicious and packed with flavor. The 1/2 pot roast French dip was also really good -- the peppered gravy was perfect. I completely forgot to add horseradish to the sandwich (my mistake!), but the side pea salad was fantastic. Now... the Monte Cristo with green apple slices. What can I say? It was a total greasy bomb. So disappointing. The entire sandwich was dipped in onion ring batter and deep fried. I took one bite and literally had grease dripping down my hand. Just way too heavy and overdone. On the positive side, the fries, tots, ranch, and tartar sauce were all solid. Overall, some standout items -- especially the coffee and French dip -- but I'd definitely skip the Monte Cristo next time. read more

While visiting from out of state my sister and I after careful consideration chose to eat here and to order food to go. the order taker was very polite and gave great phone service. we picked up our order and once we returned back to our rental realized we were missing items. We went ahead and chose to go ahead and eat without them. The food was lackluster and not worth the hype that the menu promised and highly over priced for the quality received. We called to let them know about the errors and ended up speaking with some form of manager who accused us of lying and was pretty rude. Food was the best! Unfortunately, the service is so poor that it nullifies the good cuisine. We waited too long to have a server approach our table. We ordered our drinks and dinner at the same time and it was 17 minutes until we got our drinks! Another long wait until we were finally served our dinner. Things happen, and if that's the case, a quick word from the server would alleviate any anxiety. But we never saw our server except for her delivering (finally) our meal. We recently had a large gathering and reserved the large room at the Northside Onion. The food and service was excellent. For as many people as we had, we thought the pricing for the buffet was reasonable. They met all of our needs and requests with ease, and did an excellent job. Everyone enjoyed the food and drinks. Went to the Onion for apps and desserts. I hadnt been there in several years. Was extremely disappointed. We got onion rings and mozzarella sticks. The onion rings were sopping wet with grease and served with a thin tartar sauce. The mozzarella sticks were yummy though. Then for dessert I got the cheesecake and the raspberry sauce on top was sooo sour I had to scrap it off my cheesecake. The cheesecake itself was good though. The worst part of the whole thing was the crème brûlée and is the reason I had to come leave a review. The top was not hard at all, very soft, and the consistency of the inside was SOUP. We complained and they got us another one, with the exact same problem. They don't know how to make crème brûlée and have it set correctly. Nor did they torch the top nearly long enough. What has happened to the Onion? The fish and chips have changed and not for the better. They were gracious enough to let me reorder but the Southwest Chicken Taco Salad was a disappointment also! This salad is normally my favorite but it is about half the size it normally is and the salsa on the side is smaller also. The ranch dressing was watery and tasteless. The shell was greasy and I would normally eat all of it. Not today though. The Onion is one of my favorite places to eat but today. A disappointment. read more

I even saw a bacon wrapped version on the menu after we had ordered, next time... The beer selection was amazing, 51 taps they say with small, medium, and pitcher options for all. I settled for a large pint of a local IPA and it hit the spot! For dinner I chose a steak prepared with the "pepper" style. It was served atop one of their massive onion rings and covered in a peppery grilled mushroom and onion sauce. Buttery green beans and a small Cesar salad completed the meal and I was stuffed on the way out! The service was prompt and friendly, this is a fun spot! I would definitely come back. I have to confess, I was a bit disappointed with this Onion. The other location was definitely a cut above the downtown Spokane location. They were good at accommodating our noisy large group. But the service was extremely slow, and it didn't look all that busy on the night we were there. The main good culinary experience were: the onion rings and the hot fudge cookie sundae one of my colleagues got. The rest of the food was underwhelming. I ordered the Monte Cristo. It was interesting. It was battered and deep fried, which is a first time for me trying one prepared this way, and, why I wanted to try it! It sounded like an interesting take on a Monte Cristo. Typically they are dipped in egg and sautéed French Toast style and served with maple syrup. This was served with a side of jam. It wasn't bad, but it was definitely more batter than sandwich. The portion was decent enough that I couldn't eat it all. But maybe that's cause it was so heavy from the deep fry. Most bites consisted of fried bread and very little Turkey. It was an...experience. And, one I'll probably not order again. The rest of my colleagues seemed to enjoy their food. No major complaints, but no major ooooo-ing and aaahhhh-ing, either. With so many good restaurants to experience in Spokane, I would definitely recommend finding them and leaving the Onion for another time. read more

The Olympics happened to be occurring, so the "sports bar" atmosphere and multiple TV screens gave us each some events about which we could comment and speak. I've been going here on occasion for decades and the food and service has consistently been very good. I came in with a group today and was shocked to realize my french dip sandwich was $23. It was decent but definitely not enough beef on that sandwich to warrant that price tag. I also go to The South Hill Grill quite regularly and a comparable french dip there is $17. I left having a hard time seeing the value in that meal and where that $6 difference lies. read more
