Very difficult to find good fish & chips that don't cost an arm & leg. For $10 you get a basket of 4 decent sized pieces of cod & fries. I subbed the fries for tots: NO EXTRA CHARGE! Both the fish & tots were crispy and delicious! They make good tartar sauce too! The staff provide outstanding service and work together like a well oiled machine! My husband decided to try this restaurant based on reviews. We got 2 double cheeseburgers and 2 double burgers. The service was decent in the drive thru. The fries were fair, nothing too special or awful. The burgers were not worth it! My husband assumed the burger would at least come with onions, or be asked. The burgers had ketchup and pickles. There was way too much ketchup for the burger, made the bread soggy. The burger itself was bland as toast, it needed seasoning! The burger needed salt and pepper, super underwhelming! My dog wasn't even impressed! This burger place was equivalent to Zip's, overpriced for mediocre food. I'm convinced Spokane doesn't have any decent burger places. Great place and pretty good value. Their burgers are solid , decent size portions. No frills ... just a good ol burger. Simple yet good. The fries were thick cut ... and were "ok". They over cook them and don't think there is any seasoning. But they have a great variety of dipping sauces. Makes up for the fries. Their ranch was great , tartar sauce (self serve) was good too. They also have bbq and There chicken and shrimp baskets were pretty good. Go for the double basket. Makes more sense I would have given this place a 4.3 but the closet option was 4. Employees really stand out here. They are always friendly, and they keep the place very clean. It is a fun vibe here too. I am a sucker for local one of mom and pop burger places, and this place really nails it. Food is great here. Fries aren't soggy, burgers always solid. I feel like they are kind of expensive. I get that things are hard right now, especially if you don't have the support of a big chain. But if you put thrifty in your name, it kind of creates the expectation that you will be getting a deal. After a 6.5 hour travel day, I drove over to Thrifty Scotsman because a friend specifically recommended it as the perfect comfort-food stop after traveling. I arrived at 7:56 PM for an advertised 8:00 PM closing time and found the doors already locked. There was even a family sitting outside eating who told me the restaurant was still open because they had literally just walked out with their food moments earlier. I could clearly see employees inside discussing whether or not they should let me in. They chose not to. Meanwhile, there were still three cars actively being served in the drive-thru, so they were obviously still making food and taking orders. I called and politely asked if I could simply go through the drive-thru instead. The employee told me, "We close at 7:55." I then asked, "But your posted closing time is 8:00 PM, correct?" She said yes. I responded, "So it's not 8:00 yet." She replied, "Correct... but we actually stop taking orders at 7:55." At that point, it was honestly just awkward. I completely understand employees wanting to get home at closing time. But if your business advertises an 8:00 PM closing time, locking the doors early and refusing service before then is misleading and frustrating, especially for customers who made the drive specifically because of your reputation. It wasn't just about burgers and fries. It was the complete lack of consideration and basic customer service that stood out. This review is just for shakes and ice cream. While this joint has been serving up great local fare at a reasonable price since the early 80's I have only eaten here maybe twice. However, this weekend the family decided we wanted shakes and a quick search told us the Scotsman had the greatest shakes in the land! The building looks its age, but the service was quick and friendly. You can't beat the prices and the shakes were first rate. It it simply basic, large portion, dripping burgers, dogs and fries with home made tarter, dipping sauce or ketchup as much as you want. The facility is not modern and the rest rooms are down stairs and old, but if it's basic burgers and onion rings you're looking for, this is the place and it's 20 percent less expensive than the chains! Wait for it!!! We were visiting from Tennessee with our Brothers family. "Let's go get a good hamburger. We have a great restaurant we love to go to". They were right, Hamburger, fries and milk shakes were delicious. That night when I was taking off my jewelry, I realized my bracelet was missing. Everyone spent all day looking everywhere in the house and yard several times for the bracelet. You see, it had been my mom's and I wore it everyday just like she did. It had 5 large Opals, her birthstone. She died last August and had lived with me for over 20 years. Does that make it more special? No, but . . . The managers found it that night when they were cleaning up. She put it in the safe and waited for someone to call. I can never thank them enough. This was our first time here and we'll be back. I'm from Spokane but we have been gone for the last 5 years. When we lived here before they only accepted cash, which we never have on us so we didn't get an opportunity to try. We saw they accepted cards now so we got a chance to try on Sunday. When you go in this place is a little aged burger joint but the food is Legit! We ordered the Lil Papa for $5.99 and it was enormous and sooo good. It came with 2 patties, 2 cheese, 2 bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo. It was wonderful. Next time I'll ask for no mayo add tarter and pickels to really set it off. If you love a Zips Papa Joe this crushes them. Everything was so fresh! When you order, you order your burger and side separately. We didn't know the sizes so we ordered a large fry for myself and my husband to share. Wow, it was definitely a large. Really good. read more

Despite having driven by many times not realizing this is a burger place and not a thrift store, I stopped by for lunch after having it recommended to me. Honestly, these were very good burgers and fries (and I don't especially care for fries). Additionally, the price was quite reasonable! I had the Scotsman burger and was very pleased. The staff was friendly and efficient and the restaurant itself has a quaintness that I always enjoy. Pictured if muscle cars, some vintage ads on the wall. The only criticism I might give is that I don't like styrofoam cups, but when I'm getting good food at a nice price, I can tolerate them. read more

The fish was well-seasoned, crispy, and flaky, even with multiple smaller pieces compared to that found in a standard pub. The tarter sauce was average at best, so that could use some improvement. The fries were tasty, properly salted and complemented the fish. I also tried their onion rings-- superb! Super crunchy, just the right amount of greasiness, real onion rings. UPDATED REVIEW Revisited for a second time and parked this time. We wanted to go inside. Came out to get into my car to find a worker upset that we parked in a "private parking" area on the side of the building. As far as I can see, it's not labeled. Apparently this person works here and needs parking accommodations. The employer should do a better job accommodating this person's needs, like installing proper accommodative parking with adequately marked walkways so they can get to and from their car without having to worry about a non-employee parking beside them. I had no idea about this and I doubt non-regulars know either. Do better, employer! Poorly or unlabeled "private parking" is not the same as genuine accommodations! There is ample seating, although choose wisely as some seats are directly under the air conditioning ducts. They also have a couple fun vintage arcade games! Something to take note of, the restrooms are down a flight of stairs to the basement so if you are handicapped or impaired, be sure to relieve yourself before arriving. This place has been running for many years and some locals have come here since a child. I was politely greeted as I entered. It's a simple and straight forward menu and specials change daily. The double fish or double fish & fries are stupid big and you never have to wait too long. It's not a super fancy place but that's not what you're paying for. It's great that they are taking debit cards now! Used to be cash (maybe checks?) only. That prevented me from going because I rarely carry cash. It's also AWEFUL that they take cards now, I can go whenever I want. The fries are hands down the best fast food fries in Spokane. I prefer their burgers to Zips as well. Prices and taste are all together why we will continue to support them. The super burger is huge! Their fish and chips are so hot and crispy, you'll have time to get as much tartar as you want while it cools down. I would 100% NOT recommend getting the double fish with fries and the salad. If you come here wanting the building to be immaculate, you're in the wrong place, keep moving. If, however, you're looking for good prices, good food, and good people, this is it.
