Not as good as the other ones in my opinion

FYI - I called and was told if your order is less than 3 dozen, you need to order at the store. This is a pick up and go spot. The tamales are DELICIOUS, very FILLING, so FLAVORFUL AND MOIST! Beef and red sauce, pork with green sauce and the chili and cheese are my favorite. The chicharron wasn't what I expected and it's more expensive. It just had soggy pork skin. Nonetheless I am a fan and will be back!!

I came to the Alhambra Farmers Market and discovered The Original Tamale, and I'm so glad I did. The tamales here are absolutely delicious--super moist, flavorful, and very large and filling. They're $5 each, which is well worth it for the quality and portion size. My boyfriend and I both got the pollo tamales, and they were a solid 10/10. Excellent flavor and perfectly cooked. Customer service was also great--very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend stopping by if you're at the market.

Got a dozen tamales from the farmers market in canoga park, Saturday morning. Pork , chicken tamales were great. 5each, the special ones were $6. The blueberry and cream cheese tamale was especially tasty. Quite unique.

The BEST tamales!! Their flavors are the BEST! These tamales legit are the best in the valley and LA. So big. So good. I got a huge order for my family and each flavor was super good. Their salas are also really good. They gave us a lot too! Ordering is really fast! There are some tables if you walk into the parking lot to sit. I will always go here when I want to bring tamales home or to share with friends. GRACIAS!!

The Original Tamale used to be called Mi Gusto Tamale. I don't think the tamale recipes have changed over the years. I bought two red pork tamales and two green pork tamales to try. I ate the red pork tamales, I liked the masa, it wasn't dense or too wet, the meat to masa ratio was just right and the tamales are bigger than most. The red sauce had a bit of a kick and after burn. The Green Pork Tamales were much milder and needed a bit more flavor. The masa and the ratio of meat to masa were good too. Very consistent quality between the two tamales. Although the Red Pork Tamales have a bit of a bite, I will be picking up the red pork tamales on my next trip. For good service, big tamales, value and taste, The Original Tamale is one of the better tamales in LA so swing on by and try the tamales. They also bag the tamales by type and put stickers on the bag so you know exactly what the tamales are...excellent labeling.

AMAZING tamales in the valley!! Will definitely be back for their chicken in green sauce (5/5). The corn breading was super soft, and with the green sauce the chicken was really flavorful. These tamales were also BIG. After ordering, we got our food right away. There is limited seating and parking in the back.

The original Tamale are really the best tamales I've tried. The first time they came out to my hometown in Fillmore for a event and I got to try the pineapple and green chicken, pork red, chipotle chicken. They were so good I wish I had gotten more. I got to try them again today for Dia De los Muertos event. This time I got to try the strawberry, Guava, pumpkin, blueberry and sweet corn. They were delicious and didn't disappoint. The service is very fast and the ambiance was very welcoming got to have a good conversation with the young gentleman. Will definitely keep buying for the award winning Tamales.

Who said Tuesday is for Tacos !!! I'm at the Farmers Market on a glorious Tuesday Afternoon on Figueroa & Ave 58 As I walk past the hummus and chips tent I see a glorious sight... Gourmet tamales At $5.50 a tamale I ask thyself... is this tamale worth the price?! Well the answer is... it's not only worth it... it's worth changing "Taco Tuesday" to ... TAMALE TUESDAYs and it happened here first...thanks Gourmet tamale ...for making my Tuesday a little better... a little better than Monday too.. With their utmost popular Chicken tamale; the one to try first of their varied assortments ...and believe me... they got the meats...! The flaky soft steaming semi sweet corn dough with healthy portions of delicious chicken shredded meat goes best dressed in halves... 1/2 red salsa and the other half green salsa... these salsas are special...make me move my feet...pure perfection well worth the $5... and filling too... aperitif meal !!! Tamale Tuesday at Highland Park Farmers Market baby... It all started here first MY BOY! PS They gonna be on my Christmas Wish list this year ... ya hia?! I'll be singing my "mañanitas" lleno!!!

I wasn't impressed! Award winning to me means a bomb tamale with some meat. These were dry with no filling. (No, let me give a bit of credit), I mean moist with no filling. I will give them that. The strawberry flavored one was moist. Don't eeeeven try to do a Chicharron tamale if you can not add chicharron!!One measly piece and and quick swipe of beans. It was so sad. Let me tell you the price....... 6 dollars! YUP! I'm a sucker! Well, I tried it and will never be back! Lol! I'll stick to the lady on the corner of State St and Marengo! 2 stars for the sweet girl working that day!! Thank you for reading my review!!

THE BEST TAMALES IVE EVER HAD!! My absolute FAVE is the pollo (chicken)! I love the green sauce so I always get extra. The workers are always so nice and it's always very quick. Lines can get long but it's a quick process regardless. I would think these are healthier since they don't use lard! $3.50 for a chilled tamale to eat later and $4.38 for a hot!

The Original Tamale Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - The Original Tamale

What farmers markets will you go to this week?

Don't know about the Farmers Marker but they are AMC Burbank Town Center every Friday and Saturday night. Best wishes. Their tamales at the market are $5 but if you go to their facility in Pacoima it's less expensive.

    Ceviche is it still available?

Do you guys go to farmers markets regularly? If so please let us know which ones you go to, we came across you guys this past week in Irvine and fell in love with the tamales.? I in the Newport Beach area.

Is there a section on your website that shows which Farmers Markets and on what days, you sell your delicious tamales?

They're in Norwalk on Tuesdays! That's all I know

How long do you steam the tamales?

If not frozen, 30 mins will do the job for one. Just space them out and you could get a few done in that timeframe. The more crowded the pot, add additional time.

    Are the tamales gluten free?

I am trying to call at the number listed but it appears to be disconnected. What is the phone number to place a large order?

They have an alternate telephone number at their website: (818) 897- 7964

Did you used to come to the farmers market at the kaiser hospital in anaheim?

They very well may have, they currently come to the Northridge mall farmer's market every Wednesday 5pm-9pm

Which farmers markets are you guys at?

Today they were at the Encino Farmers Market & I believe they are there weekly. Don't know why they don't put that on their website for people who don't want to travel to Pacoima.

Do they take large phone orders in advance for Christmas?

Are the tamales made without lard?

The tamales are made without lard and are delicious!

The menu is quite simple, but beware that no prices are listed on the main menu, but they are on the paper menus. They accept Apple Pay/credit cards. I ordered the asada burrito and the pollo caramelo and added the grilled poblano (as recommended on Yelp!). The tortillas were the true stars -- soft, nice chew, with a buttery mouth feel (probably lard). The fillings were just ok. The inside reminded me of a Taco Bell 7 layer burrito -- a lot going on but all the flavors kinda blend together. I (incorrectly) thought the beans were refried, but they are not. Whatever is going on inside, I didn't find much structure. The burrito was the best. The caramelo was a lazily folded burrito. I read that it was like a quesadilla, but I couldn't disagree more. I would skip this next time. I spent $25 and it was a lot of food, but I wasn't impressed, especially given the hype and the fact that LA should really be the pinnacle of Mexican food. Not sure if I'll make a second trip here.

Now when you pull up originally you might think, "am I in the right place" but once you park and get into the courtyard, it is LOVELY! Amazing ambience! There is a bocce set up, string lights. It is a little slice of oasis in the middle of the fashion district. The restaurant itself - beautiful. I couldn't ask for more. Absolutely perfect in my book. Beautiful plants hanging, perfect Spanish music in the background (any place playing Natalia LaFourcade is a win). The drinks were great! I had the jungle bird which was fun. Food was so good too. The whipped beans are the star! We had the guacamole which was tasty, great tostadas with it. The arepas were good but the pork belly was a little too fatty (I know pork belly is always fatty) to the point the fat muted the flavored for the arepa a bit, but still delicious. The empanadas were great and as someone who lived in South America and ate empanadas every day, these really took me back to my Paraguay days. The squash blossoms were light and perfectly fried. Unfortunately my friends had gone to Funke the night before so they were comparing the squash blossoms and Funke won out, but they still liked Dama's! Small plates were enough for the 3 of us. The service was quick and attentive. Parking was easy for us. I will definitely be back!

The staff are lovely humans who really seem to care about their customers. We have some faves on the menu. The bean dip is fabulous and I'm addicted to the baby gem salad. They have recently amped up the filling in the delicious crispy squash blossoms and I love the acidity and heat. The fish is also a hit in my books. One dish that doesn't work for me is the lamb chops, which is a shame since it's my favorite protein. I've ordered them multiple times with clear instructions on temperature and have found them overcooked and tough. The beef tostada was just ok. Whilst I loved the pickled veg on the side, the beef was underseasoned. It wasn't bad - just not up to the standard of other dishes. The vibe in the place is welcoming and the restaurant is nicely appointed. We will continue to be regulars and it's really worth trying if you haven't been yet.

I ordered their version of a Piña Colada but it didn't hit the spot quite like I had envisioned when reading the menu. The cream was too thick and grainy. The aguachile was good. I forgot what version it was since this was for Mother's day, but it was definitely flavorful. The queso fundido was surprising! The Chicken Milanesa was a miss for me. I was told and warned it was huge, but I didn't enjoy the ham they placed on it. It was not enjoyable. The Chilaquiles were definitely better than my milanesa. Let's not forget the French Toast. I'm a french toast snob. Their french toast was DRY. The custard in the middle wasn't as sweet as I thought it'd be but the fruit was enjoyable. But it was overall dry. I browsed the menu and had a really hard time deciding, but ended up on the cauliflower rajas taco, the crispy shrimp taco & the vegan Korean BBQ taco. The waiter recommended the crispy shrimp taco, but I actually enjoyed the vegetarian tacos more. I love cauliflower and poblano so that taco was a great starter. So much flavor and a variety of textures. The tortillas were super flavorful too. The potato taquitos came next and I am actually obsessed. The outside was perfectly crispy, the interior was soft, flavorful & cheesy. The sauce complimented it perfectly. I can not recommend them enough. The crispy shrimp taco was really good, but I also tried a crispy fish taco and would honestly get that over the shrimp. I think there was mango or something in the coleslaw of the fish taco because it had a really nice fresh flavor to it. Last, I had the vegan Korean BBQ taco. The mushroom shreds & the flavor were just perfect. Again, as a pescatarian I have really never had Korean BBQ because it's so heavily meat focused. I truly loved this taco. AMAZING. So efficient, very clean, love being able to see them prep food at the bar area…read more Pulpo a la brasas - low key a must, octopus is so tender. Didn't care much for the rice/beans but not bad. Comes with blue corn tortillas, but honestly the octopus and almond sauce (think b*tchin' sauce) were delicious. Great cherry tomato pico de gallo. Scallop aguachile - wowwww the scallops were so fresh, literally bursting is my mouth. They were sweet, tender, and perfectly paired with the tangy lime sauce. Taco de pulpo - ok so this is pretty much an assembled pulpo à la brasas, BUT I will say the full meal was more tender because it was an entire grilled piece of grilled vs one tentacle. Also love the open freezers so you can see the fresh seafood hanging. Another standout was the homemade hot sauces! Each had a distinct flavor from sweet, smokey, and hot so it was really fun to try. The ceviches and the raw cold dishes were my favorite, especially the scallop aguachile! SO GOOD. Would order that 100 times.
