This place has a great selection of beers, friendly staff, decent prices and it's usually possible to get a table (although I have yet to be lucky enough to secure that fabled window seat, where you get to sit by the open window on a hot summer's night and just watch the world go by, ahhh. Maybe I should never get it. I am sure it won't live up to the hype and I'd just end with someone throwing a melted milkshake outside the McDonald's next door and spilling on me.) Anyway. It's lovely. It's a little too dark and the music a little to loud for it to be perfect for me, but perhaps I'm just too old. Also, you can take your takeout in there and eat it, which is great (you should go to Fatty Daddy's across the street, not McDonald's, natch). Only danger is spilling hot sauce all over you and not noticing, due to said lack of light. The Owl Farm has potential, but still seems to be finding its identify. The dim lighting, rich woods and indie rock aspire to be elegantly hip, but the noise level, baseball game on TV, and the holdover middle-aged lush crowd from Harry Boland's keep it divey. Prices were reasonable -- $7 for my Maker's. I'm not much of a beer drinker, but the friend I was with was pleased with the selection. Minus one star because I got not one, but TWO splinters from their improperly sanded bar. I'll be back, but only because I live a half a block away. This place is 2cool4school. First off, it looks so unassuming from the outside, like a typical gross greasy bar but then you open the door and walk in and it looks dope inside. Huge open spaces, plenty of seating, and some excellent beer selection. Yummmmm. I had the super long Dutch named stout, which was 11% ABV. Do not chug that drink, despite whatever challenge is laid at your feet. It is a fantastic stout, full-bodied and almost smoky. If you're looking to nurse a drink for a while, that's probably it. read more

Of course I gotta give it 5/5 for the adorable owl decor. Love it. I actually dislike beer a lot but this place is the first that has given me several beers that I actually enjoyed very much! With fun names like Trinity Damn, It Feels Good to be a Gangster and Smuttlabs, I had a great time trying out the menu. The cider selection is also a lot of fun to try out. I really like the fact that you can choose what size of drink for the most part. I've been here like 3 times and I always manage to see the same bartender, he is always super chill and incredibly knowledgeable of the drinks there. I just remember that he has a long beard. I like all of the recommendations he gives. I usually go there at night, so it's really dim and kinda hard to see but your eyes adjust (at least mine did). If you want water, there is a self-service dispenser by the pinball machines, so that's cool. It's more or less room temp but it's still good for keeping hydrated! The pinball machines are my favorite part of going to Owl Farm. I always have a nice time coming here, so I am def planning to come back again soon. read more

Going for the 'precocious' motif here. Stylish, coy, precious, delicate, ornate, slightly Renaissance. Monastic. Parochial, pastoral, saturnine. Baroque. Roccoco. Feels like a movie set. Owls, why so named? Not sure. However, it's all very clean and neat; almost mincing. What makes up for all this surface sheen, is an extremely varied and robust drink menu. Really impressive array of choices in practically every area of spirit, beverage, elixir, or inebriant. Apertifs and cordials, champagnes, noble vintages; rustic brews. They probably have mead and mulled wine here, I wouldn't be surprised to find. Oh well. (The chalice with the palace has the pellet with the poison; the vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true!) read more

I was randomly in Park Slope one night and came upon this place. On a weekday night there were a few patrons here enjoying some brewskis. Hang out at the bar in the front or lounge at the tables in the back in this dimly lit pub. Like pinball? You can get crazy on the three different games in the back. I haven't played in a long time and, despite pinball not being one of my favorite arcade games, I still indulged for a game, which reinforced the fact that I am just not good at pinball. If I lived in the area I could see this place being my go-to spot on a random weekday evening. read more

This is the kind of bar you need in your hood so you can try different beers. They also have porters and coffee flavored brews, so I am in love:) Bartenders can be hit and miss, but overall friendly. They have wifi. And an extra plus is they have a special toilet paper shelf so you don't have to drip dry like in other bars that have one roll and only one roll. I like the Owl Farm. Definitely a step up from Harry Boylands. This is not hipsterville, but it shouldn't be. It is a simple pub with a little face lift. It attracts all types of people and relys heavily on the crowd for its ambiance. Pin Ball in back is a plus to keep the good times rolling. The beer selection is good and allows for the more adventurous choices. The bartender (a woman) is definitely a bit surly, but we were also definitely drunk soooooo star crossed lovers we were. Perhaps we would have liked each other a bit more if she was more fun and we were more.... well... boring. Diverse beer selection that caters to the cheap-skates EERRRRR thrifty volume drinkers as well as people looking for something different to try beyond Captain Lawerence or Brooklyn Ale Seasonals. The vibe and space are good, pretty relaxed and still warm. They had an amazing 90s Grunge New Years Eve Party and I hope they continue to do more special events to keep things interesting. Came here on a Friday night with a big group of friends. It wasn't too crazy crowded, which I liked a lot. They have a great variety of beers, and the pinball machines in the back are a nice touch. Nothing beats great beer with great company and an old classic game. Couldn't give all 5 stars for this one because the bartender wasn't exactly the friendliest of the bunch. This place has a tap list that makes this particular Oregon girl very happy. Always something interesting to try (last time I was there, they had an interesting selection of beers from small, younger German breweries, as opposed to the old traditional standbys). I've come here for friends' birthday parties and other gatherings, and the space easily accommodates our small-ish (15 people?) celebratory group. The bartenders are generally laidback people and never mind when we order pizzas or tacos to be delivered to the bar. One note of caution, though: the bathrooms are rather tiny, so if you need a little more space to accommodate your body or for mobility reasons, know that they may be tough to navigate. read more

This is a great place that is close to home. Whenever we are feeling like the couch is getting boring and we want to step out, this place is perfect for that. It's close, it's not overly crowded, and our dog can come. There are quite a few beers on tap, and some of the bartenders usually seem happy to help you figure out what you are in the mood for. However, some of the bartenders are rude. Not just a litte rude, but a lot rude. Like I wonder why they have this job, kinda rude. I don't go to bars usually to converse with the bartenders, so that is why I only took off one star. Jenn is an exception to the bartender comment. She's friendly and funny and not at all in your face. I love that our dog can come with us to the bar. We don't get to bring him many places anymore, and he loves the attention he gets when he's with us. The Owl Farm loves dogs, (at least according to their fun, ever-changing, witty, hilarious sandwich-board out front) and we like to think The Owl Farm loves our dog too!! I checked my thermometer as we were walking down the sidewalk and it said it was only 88 degrees, but boy it sure feels a lot hotter than that! So here we are inside the Owl Farm just trying to cool down, I got a giant glass of this here ice water that the man, what did you say your name was? Mike just shot it straight out of that hose back there. It just shot right out I tell ya, filled this glass up in only a second! So we're just hanging out in here cooling off with some of the regulars on this July afternoon and ha ha get a load of this Louie, there is a dog just totally splayed out on the floor over here! HA HA! I almost stepped right on him and he couldn't care less could he?! Hey there buddy. What's your name? What's the dog's name? Patches. Well hey there Patches! HA HA! He couldn't care less huh? Well he is probably just as hot as all of us here and he is just going to lay down and chill and he couldn't care a lick about me! Hey there what's your name? Carly. Well Carly did you see Patches down there? What kind of dog is Patches? A Basset Hound! Carly did you see Patches the Basset Hound down there? You did!? I love this bar. Great value, serious beer list and strong drinks. I'm not a fan of day drinking, but sometimes (not often, not to worry), I need a beer at 2:30pm on a Thursday and this bar is great for that. Yes, it's divey, but in a cozy sort of way, and they're open earlier than most bars in Park Slope. Reasons why this bar rocks: - It's a neighborhood bar. None of that rowdy, frat-like behavior, although with the ridiculously good happy hour, you might very well find yourself quickly be wasted here. Everyone is friendly but will also leave you alone (you'll see people reading newspaper, working on their laptop, or just unwinding over a good beer). - The coolest bartender ever (argh, I forgot her name! How could I? Jenn?). She's funny, genuinely friendly and makes strong G&Ts. - They accept credit cards (which shouldn't be an amazing feat considering we are in New York City, in the 21st century... but I guess Park Slope is a little behind). - Ridiculously good happy hour... Did I say that already? Right, 2-for-1 happy hour is so much better when the drinks are only $5 to begin with. - The location is probably its only downside (9th St is a bit grimy and depressing), but at least it's within stumbling distance to the F, G and R trains (and the bus stop). Entertainment-wise, I think I saw some pinball machines in the back... The beer alone should be enough entertainment! Bring a book (ah actually don't, it's kind of dark in here), make some new friends, watch the game. read more

The Owl Farm is the best beer bar in NY. It hits on absolutely every facet of everything I love about beer bars, with the only problem being its long distance from my apartment. I knew I'd love this place the first day I came by, which happened to be their 1-year anniversary celebration. In addition to raffling off rare beers, they actually opened up their ENTIRE DRAFT LIST for FREE for an HOUR. Not half off "select drafts" aka boring-year-round-available stuff. Not 1 4-oz pour per person. They literally just opened the flood gates with a crapload of awesome beer up on the board, and they handled it awesomely. I was sold immediately on this place being outstanding, and everything they've done since then has reinforced the fact that they are simply the best at what they do. First and foremost, a good beer bar is only as good as its beer selection, and Owl Farm's is top notch. It is of course dominated primarily by American craft beer, but unlike many other places you can always expect to find a few solid international options as well. If you're a complete beer nerd like me, you can expect some extremely awesome and rare finds with reasonable frequency (Bo & Luke, Mexican Cake, Citrus Ninja Exchange, and some Imperial Biscotti Break variants being just a few examples of stuff I've seen on tap here recently). And they do an awesome job promoting great new breweries, most recently with Other Half and Finback. AND, to top all of this off, they do 2 kickass bottle pours on Mondays, typically breaking out some interesting and delicious beers - a few recent examples being Cantillon Lou Pepe Kriek (!), Perennial Abraxas, and GI Bourbon County Barleywine. So yeah - they aren't screwing around with the beer options here. And that is most good. This is also probably a good time to mention that despite the awesome selection, they don't exude beer-geek-pretentiousness here at all, so if you just are looking for a place to hang out with a good drink you'll be 100% at home here as well. Second and secondmost, this is just a great place to hang out. When I've been here during the week, it's always been super laid back and a good place to unwind after work. On the weekend, it's lively but not so packed that I can't carve out some space with a few friends. I've hidden in the corner and had a heart to heart and I've met random people and random people's dogs (yup, they allow dogs). I've geeked out over rare beer, relaxed and talked to the bartenders, or gotten a bit (a lot) drunker than I should have at a table in the back. Regardless of the mood I've been in, The Owl Farm has suited it. Another important win for this place - the prices are actually fair! This has been a big point of contention for me as a dude living in Manhattan who was excited to see good beer bars finally start to sprout up, only to realize that they are price gouging like crazy. The Owl Farm (and each of its sister bars for that matter), however, offers up good-sized pours for pretty solid prices. Finally, a seriously under-appreciated feature here is that you can bring in your own food. No need to shell out further for overpriced bougie pub food, just choose your favorite place nearby and bring it on in. I've taken advantage of this a few times already and really wish it was something more bars would do. The Owl Farm really is firing on all cylinders as a kickass beer bar. If I lived any closer, I would have probably given them all of my money by now. read more

This is a great bar, for so many reasons. First of all, if you love beer, this is the place to be. They have so many types, and you can get smaller sizes, which allows you to sample a bunch of different ones in one sitting. A lot of them are local, and the list is constantly changing. I was there pretty recently, but looking at their website today, they have a ton of new options already. Also, the bartenders are great. We sat at the bar, and they were constantly refilling our waters, which was much appreciated! They were all really nice & really quick about taking our orders. It definitely stood out from other bar experiences. I've never personally taken advantage of being able to bring your own food into the bar, but that's also a nice touch. read more
