The Palm is a power lunch staple of Washington DC. For that reason, my mentor and I thought it the perfect place to go for a check in. I have to admit, I was slightly intimidated by The Palm's allure but quickly let that go when I was greeted with friendly service and delicious food. I got the lobster BLT - one of the best sandwiches I have had in a long time. My mentor got a lobster salad, which he wasn't impressed with. When our waiter asked how the food was my mentor mentioned he wasn't particularly impressed. We instantly got the salad taken off the bill and asked if there was anything else he could get us on the house. Fantastic A+ service. Additionally, I would highly recommend the Half and Half (half cottage fries and half fried onions). Delicious! With oversized drawings of politicians on the wall that have patronized the restaurant, this vintage Italian restaurant feel provides lighter overtones to the dark and somber decor. While I enjoyed my experience at The Palm though I would struggle to go back outside of a work meeting solely based on the price of their food. No one enjoys paying $2.50 for half a can of Diet Coke. read more

Hidden off on 19th St in Dupont, this steakhouse was good choice... though a little pricey, the service was okay and the decor was a continual point of conversation throughout the meal. I started things off with the tomato and cheese appetizer. It was okay, but a little heavy for my tastes (especially when I'm about to have a steak). I'd recommend splitting it. For my entree I had a tasty small filet mignon, which was cooked to perfection. However, the guy next to me who ordered his steak medium (which by the way, I am totally opposed to) had to send his back because it was a little bloody in the middle. The highlight of the meal for me was the hashbrown/ potato side that came with my steak. I highly recommend it. Dessert was a mix of wild berries. Be warned though, they bring all the dessert choices to your table and the chocolate cake looks like it is a billion calories and could possibly kill you on the spot. People at my table also seemed to enjoy the tuna. However, I think everyone was secretly wishing they would've ordered the lobster. The woman at the table next to us had a whole one and our table couldn't stop eyeing her plate. The service was ok. The waiter kept mixing up our plates and the valet kept trying to give us keys to a car we didn't own (only semi-worrisome). However for the amount of money you're paying, the service wasn't that great. And finally, all the time at dinner, I couldn't help but wonder: "Why is batman on the wall?" 3.5 stars Hmmm... i like this place because of the caricatures and history... and the food was good -- not great. Unfortunately for me, I wasn't really hungry. So, I went with a crazy shrimp salad. It was good. Pedro P. had the 14-ounce filet mignon (yes, FOURTEEN ounces). So, I obviously helped him out a little bit. Very tender and juicy, but not the best I've had. We also had creamed spinach and the mashed potatoes. I loveeee spinach, so for me -- this was my fave!! The mashed potatoes are made with goat cheese -- eh! I had dinner at The Palm with my girlfriends last weekend. We came for dinner the night of my friend's bachelorette so we were all dressed up. We sat down in a dining room full of faces. Actual live human ones, and the walls painted in lovely portraits and caricatures of people that have frequented the locations. Apparently if you spend a certain amount of money or are a big regular, you will have a spot for your face on the wall. The tradition began at the NYC location. They even give you a revealing party of your face on the wall. Pretty sweet (though, kind of creepy) and definitely a unique touch to the restaurant. From what I understand, the food was excellent. I would probably not be the person to ask since I do not eat steak or seafood and wasn't very hungry so I just had some mashed potatoes. My friends all ordered salads, chicken parmesan, soups, sides, calamari, etc. We all loved what we had. Very delicious, and complimented by a nice glass of wine. The place was crowded, as it was 7PM on a Saturday night. Lots of upperclass people. They probably were wondering why we were there. Oh, and the dessert tray looked absolutely divine. read more

OK, I was in DC for the FOSE conference and I was hanging out with beef eaters, so after a horrible meal the night before, the boys wanted another shot at a good steak--which we all received. Three months ago, on our last day in DC, my friend and I decided for a classy steak dinner. We chose the Palm because it was the most convenient from our hotel (Mayflower), not because it was the the place to be among the political, upper-class clientele. I reserved online, was greeted in the restaurant and was given a nice table. The night was busy and loud, our waiter was exuberant, and the food was great. With the steak I ordered, it was perfectly how I wanted my steak to be. The desserts were equally delicious, god I'm still craving for my tira misu. After reading the previous reviews how this place is popular among the intimidating crowd, I agree with one of the reviewers that it's not as stifling as people may perceive it. read more

The Palm is one of my favorite steakhouses and it's in all of my favorite cities--DC, NY, Boston, and LA. The service is always pleasant. The food is consistently good, whether you order the steak, seafood, or something else. I recommend their calamari, crab cake, and filet mignon. I especially love the side dishes. I can make a meal out of their creamed spinach. As for the desserts, however, skip it and get it elsewhere. read more

If you don't like red meat don't come here it's that simple because everything besides the steaks are terrible! I ordered the recommendation of the server for someone who doesn't eat red meat the linguine clams and calamari both were a big disappointment! The calamari was greasy and the linguine was not eatable the pasta was undercooked and the clams tasted funny.. My friend had the prime rib and said it was delicious. The service was also not too impressive the server saw that I barley touched my food and I asked for more bread yet never asked me if everything was ok? I will give this 3 stars on the steak alone. It was a very tasty dry aged cut and I enjoyed it very much. That said for the price they could at least include a side dish. It hurts my heart to pay the prices at the palm and nothing is included. Also the decor is whimsical but also a little tacky. There has to be a better way to display the caricatures than this. Overrated. The only redeeming thing about my lunch, which featured a steak that was waaaaayyyy too over-cooked, was that Arnold himself, the Terminator, sat at the table next to ours. He's so dreamy. I love the menu and service at most branches in the Palm group, but this one was the worst meal and service experience that I ever had at any Palm restaurant. In fact, it was the first time I ever had such a bad meal experience at any Palm, and it scares me that the business is growing too fast, without scaling the quality with the growing number of locations. The pasta and sauce was way off, the chicken parm was poorly made, and the server was a complete amateur. I think I will save Palm restaurant visits for other cities besides D.C. where they perform much better. Man do I love this place. If you like it, I would also highly suggest joining their 837 Club loyalty program, that's how you get your picture on the wall! (after $15k spent, though) I've been here a bunch of times and have always had a good experience. The staff always goes out of its way to make sure we have a great experience. The drinks are strong, the steak is tender, the lobster is succulent, and the key lime pie is simply the best desert I've had. It can be hard to get a table, particularly on a working day for lunch, but if you go for lunch, you will get hooked on this place. The best deal in the city is their "Business Lunch." For $20, you get a salad (go with the caesar with anchovies), a choice of entree, and a desert (try said key lime pie). I also love their iced tea, which is fresh brewed and I have never been charged for. Great if you want to see and be seen or if you just like a good bargain. I mean come on, you could spend $11 at Baja Fresh, but treat yourself... You deserve it. read more

The wine list and appetizers would have been enough to make my birthday meal spectacular, but the STEAK is what won my heart! I opted for the smaller filet (maybe the 10 oz. NY Strip vs. the 14 oz.?) and still wound up having some to take home at the end. My husband got the ribeye and was a very happy camper. We started with the shrimp cocktail and calamari, which were perfectly prepared. The shrimp were huge and both dipping sauces were very tasty. However, our table was stuffed in the back corner of the room and it was a particularly busy Friday night, so I felt it wasn't as comfortable a setup as the booths might be - just something to note for next time! read more

FOOD: very, very mediocre and sometimes bad. at our table, we had several different dishes. really good crab cakes. fried calamari and shrimp cocktail were pretty good, though nothing special. a tuna steak was a big gray blob of meat on a plate - not appetizing. a bit tasteless. it also didn't come with any real side dish. so we ordered goat cheese whipped potatoes for it, which basically had no salt in them whatsoever. meh. ironically, the Cobb salad and fries that came with one of the burgers were very, very over-salted. overall? frustrating. SERVICE: everyone was very nice, but i don't understand why the busboys and waiters were constantly running around and looking stressed. literally, i felt like they were being timed. DECOR: cozy, but a bit dark. a person at a table next to us brought his own tiny flashlight. not even kidding. One of DC's Best! Very business casual so be dressed appropriately. They've got a wide variety of steaks, burgers, and chops. The lobster special is really good and so is the NY double cut. The sides are served family style so they generally feed 2-3 people so order appropriately. The caesar salad is one of the best as well. The chocolate cake is to die for, it's flown in from NY. So you're meeting someone special (your wife) for upscale fast food next to a Metro stop. For $20, the Palm's "Business Lunch" gets you salad, steak, and flourless chocolate cake (my choice) or soup, fish, and key lime pie (my wife's). Both choices came with creamed spinach, which we both loved and you will, too. (My wife loves cooked spinach , and I don't, so this is clearly a crowd--pleaser.) And did I mention fast food? The waiter didn't stay at our table long enough to hear my wife's choice of vegetable, but he brought something, she said I didn't order this, he said no problem and came back with the creamed spinach in 30 seconds. The steak was just the way I love it -- crisp sear outside, juicy inside, enough substance that I know I'm eating steak and not chicken, and the (paprika?) sauce was delicious. My wife had a contrary opinion. She said it was rare (I ordered medium rare) and tough. But she did like her fish. I love desserts, and was rewarded with a delicious slab of chocolate (no kin to a fluffy chocolate cupcake). And my wife's key lime pie was tart and tasty, too. The Palm's "Business Lunch" seems misnamed, since it's too loud to conduct business. But it was great for the social break we were after. read more

Had lunch today at The Palm for the first time. I've ventured to other (similar) establishments before (Cap Grille, Charlie Palmer, S&W, etc), but this was my first meal at The Palm. Immediately I get the aura of an old-school steakhouse. The staff is attentive, but also unpretentious. They know the menu and they know what they're doing. I ordered the soup (a beef vegetable) and while it was a little light on the beef, it made up for it with a strong broth that wasn't too salty and large chunks of fresh veggies. It was a great start to a wonderful meal. I went with the chicken parm for my main course and the chicken is tenderized perfected before being loaded up with sauce and cheese. The side of pasta was just the right portion size and the marinara sauce tastes fresh. A glass of wine was also enjoyed with my meal and the waiter was good with refilling water glasses. I am fairly new to yelp but I travel a lot so I thought I would give my thoughts on the many restaurants I go to. I went to the Palm Restaurant and was actually excited to go because I heard food Network reviews at Palm Restaurants in New York were good, so I thought this must be a great place to go eat. and so I took my wife out for what I thought would be a great dinner. Unfortunately the meal was not very good at all. The steak I ordered totally lacked flavor and my wife had lobster she thought was like rubber, she actually said red lobster put out a better lobster for half the price. Overall I thought the service was good, but the food was terrible for what we paid. I don't mind paying high prices for good food but this food lacked flavor. I don't think I will ever go back to this location, I was very disappointed. :( read more

This is about their bar service/happy hour only. It took about 10 minutes to get the bartender's attention. Finally, after ordering two draft beers (only small bites are on happy hour specials, no drink specials), we have noticed that that keg is about done and, the bartender, being as lazy as she was, just gave us half-full glasses of beer. I wouldn't mind so much if she chargeed us half for it, but that Amster Light was $7.50 a draft, and we only got half of it. Then, after ordering a couple of small bites, it took her another 15 minutes to inform us that they were out of one of them, yet, she did not forget to charge us for it. The best steakhouse in Washington D.C., hands down. The steaks here are simply perfect, and I've been to all of the top flight steakhouses in the Nation's Capital to include the one with the funny alcohol-beverage name. The bisque, salad and steaks at The Palm are the best. The service is prompt and efficient. Valet parking right out front. Tip: Ask for seating in the front room overlooking 19th Street as the dining room with its hard floors, walls, and ceiling can be noisy at times. read more

After having an underwhelming meal at Morton's the night before, we decided to take our family group to The Palm this week. Our server was great but the food was very disappointing. Veal Parm was as thin as a piece of shirt cardboard and was so tough I left it on my plate. Steaks were just ok and not as good as my wife buys at Sams Club. There is no way they were serving Prime as advertised. Their mushroom side was so full of vinegar we couldn't eat it . All in all, the food was "EL-Sucko" and not at all what I expected. It was $1,100 for 8 people with a significant amount of chicken ordered rather than steak. I don't mind paying up when it's great. I had hoped to dazzle our family group with a special night and unfortunately for me we struck out two nights in a row, first with Morton's and The Palm. Pretentious. We had a gift card that had been on my desk for a couple of years and decided to cash it in. A couple of the dishes were 3 stars and others were 2 stars. Our guest's salad was a 2 star dish. It looked like it came out of a bag from Giant Food. Our guests shared a 4-pound lobster that was a 3 star entree. It was not noteworthy. However, it was well presented and the meat was tender and delicious. My entrée choice was a disappointment. I asked for my Chairman's Reserve Boneless Rib-Eye Steak to be prepared Pittsburgh Rare: Blackened, spicy, hot and juicy. What was served was a 2 star entrée. The center was cold and the outside was barely blackened. For a restaurant that takes pride in its steaks and other meats, my steak was a loss. The gift card was a good deal. read more

Full disclosure: I brought the Gilt deal back in March and we used it in May. The cost of the voucher was $189. With my Gilt voucher in hand and knowing that we would be attending a concert at KenCen, I made our reservations via Open Table. I put in all of the required information and a special note that it was also my husbands birthday. We checked the website for parking, and noticed that The Palm had free valet after six, herein lies our problem, our reservation was at 5:00. We located a parking garage on the map nearby and called it good. The day of arrives and we get ready and head out, of course traffic is horrendous and we were not going to make our 5pm reservation. We called and they staff was happy to accommodate us at 5:30. We arrive and noticed that there was a valet available, but it was for The Melting Pot. NOTE: The Melting Pot will do valet for The Palm for $8. I took the valet up on his offer as it was cheaper than the parking garage but felt that The Palm should have had valet available before 6pm, after all this was a FRIDAY night. This is the reason for 4 stars, otherwise I would have given 5. We go in and we are seated right away. Upon sitting down, I noticed a card on the table. It seems that every person that worked in the restaurant that night had signed a birthday card to my husband!! I thanked them while my husband was away using the facilities and then pointed out the card to him. He was highly impressed which says oodles :) The hubs ordered a Henny and he was happy with the fill. We were presented with our Gilt menu that was printed on nice paper and made our selections. The meal was four courses, one app , one salad , one entree, a glass of wine, and dessert per person along with water, coffee, or tea. I chose Beef Carpaccio, the salad wedge with bleu cheese, olives, and bacon, Fillet Mignon and Lobster, and key lime cheesecake. The hubs chose Shrimp Cocktail, Cesar Salad, Fillet Mignon and Lobster, and cheesecake. We both wanted the same thing so our wonderful server, Paul, was able to split the 10oz Fillet and 3 pound lobster between the two of us which is another classy move because we like our meat done different ways. The carpaccio was divine! Moist, tender, just the right amount of flavor, and I was sad when it was gone. The shrimp were gigantic, think jumbo on steroids! They also came with cocktail sauce and horseradish on the side that was truly fire and when I say fire, I mean HOT! They call that stuff atomic and that it is. A little goes a long way. In other words, go light on the horseradish, otherwise you will hate yourself. We made our way to the salad course and the salad wedge, yes sir! Reminded me of the salad at Smith and Wollensky. The bleu cheese and bacon were everything! The Cesar was your classic Cesar, nothing to write home about. Now on to the main course, the fillet and lobster. Our food comes out and Paul comes over and 'dresses' us in cloth bibs, these things are nice, and then he proceeds to take all of the lobster meat out for us! The fillet and lobster were so tender, melt in your mouth good nom, nom, nom, nom.... After we finished cleaning our plates, Paul came over and took everything away and asked us about dessert. At this point, I thought I was going to pop, but I soldiered on. We ordered our desserts and then shortly they arrived. The cheesecake was your standard NY style, and the Key Lime was what I was expecting. The check comes out and I look at the total, the meal with two drinks (the hubs had two Hennys) was over $300 . Once the voucher kicked in our total, for his two drinks was $40 ! We paid Paul and away we went with full stomachs of yummy food goodness. read more

The shrimp cocktail was delightful, chopped salad okay. For the main entree, this time I tried the Chilean Sea Bass. Was fresh and juicy. FULL DISCLOSURE: This review is based on my visit during restaurant week (although I have been to this location previously for other meals) We arrived during the lull before dinner so we were seated immediately. We had a really nice waiter who was very attentive, but he stopped by our table far too often to chit chat. "Do you want to know about how the pictures got on the wall," "How was the traffic?", "Did you hear about the man-hole cover that exploded" - I know some people enjoy chatting with the waiter but I was more interested in conversation with my dinner partner. The food: Calamari - Excellent Lobster Bisque - Excellent (but there are no actual lobster chunks, the soup is completely pureed) Filet Mignon - Ehh - The steak had the perfect texture and was cooked med-well as I asked but there was no taste. None. Cheesecake - Very Tasty Last but certainly not least - there were several fruit flies roaming around our table. It was annoying to have to swat them away. My advice for restaurant week - come here during lunch, I think you would get a better value. Hands down the BEST CREAMED SPINACH amongst all steakhouses I've been to. I kid you not. I would see it possible if someone said they've had a better cut of steak elsewhere, but the Palm's creamed spinach is a winner. Granted i'm sure it's oozing with butter and creamy high calorie goodness, but I couldn't care cause it's just amazing. More importantly it's consistently good every time I've dined at the Palm. As for the steak, I've never had anything to complain about. I love ribeye and the Palm serves a solid 24 ounce ribeye. I also like steak with lots of flavor. Although, I prefer the Cajun ribeye at Smith and Wollensky's because their meat is just engulfed in flavor, the one at the Palm is solid. What a great steak house! We randomly walked in one night to grab a bite. My buddy and I walked in without reservation. This was no problem for the Palm. We were welcomed and sat without hesitation. As soon as I was sat, we had a server waiting to take our drink order. He was attentive and sharp. If waiting tables were an Olympic sport, he'd be Michael fucking Phelps. I started off with a old fashioned, it was top notch! I ordered several more... I also ordered a ribeye, it was one of the finest steaks I've ever had. In brief: overpriced food eaten by fat loud men. Maybe it's because DC is a haven for lobbyists with expense accounts, but this was the worst value for money meal I've had in the district (and that says a lot, coming from the Bay Area). To be fair, the food was good, but I hate the pretentiousness of restaurants that make you order sides separately--at least put the main course on a smaller plate so I can pretend I'm not missing the garnishings. But the evening got off on the wrong foot and worsened. First, we get seated in a booth. You'd think that would be nice, cozy even. Well, it was like Purgatory (and felt it too, with the bare wood pew--I mean, bench). What was worse were the pair of loud gluttons sitting behind me, one of whom kept shifting in his seat. Since the booths were connected (did I mention the solid wood furnishings), that meant I would get shifted too. Again. And again. And again. When we sat, we had thought they were almost finished, but then it seemed they were only working on their appetizers. That was when we asked to change tables. An improvement? Perhaps. But after reseating us, our server disappeared somewhere in the kitchen and kept us waiting. And waiting. And waiting. And it wasn't just her (mind you, we were a mere party of three), but the water boy seemed spirited away as well. What can I say after that, and then having to fork over $100 for my meal? So, I wrote a rather scathing review of the Palm in Tysons( I still stand behind it- sorry), but I figured, having heard lovely things about the DC location, that I would give the Palm another try when restaurant Week came around. This time, I was quite pleased. The meals for restaurant week are $35.12 and include a first course/starter, entree and dessert. I ordered the Caesar Salad with Anchovies( 1), Butternut Squash Ravioli with Cranberries and Duck Confit (2) and the Pecan Pie a la mode(3). I felt very pleased with the portion and taste of all of the items I ordered. The caesar was not overpowering, but had a kick; the anchovies were plentiful and a nice addition. The ravioli were superb- really perfectly cooked pasta and the butternut squash was mixed with cinnamon and had the taste of Thanksgiving. The duck was an interesting accompaniment, but surprisingly well suited to the dish as were the dried cranberries. The pecan pie was a highlight as was the vanilla ice cream covered in caramel. Yum. Amongst the other three guests, I got to sample the Vegetable Noodle Soup, 9oz Filet Mignon with Pesto Mashed Potatoes, and the Cheesecake. The filet was delicious. The filets came out as requested for two of the three guests, the other was "close"(Medium instead of Medium Rare as requested). For a steakhouse, I think everything should be spot on, oh well. The pesto mashed potatoes were quite good, very flavorful, nice bite of pesto, but the portion small. The plate looked bare with just the filet and the small half-dome of potatoes. The cheesecake was delicious. The accompanying raspberry sauce was a throwaway and of poor quality. The soup tasted similar in quality to progresso-. nothing special, and certainly not Palm Quality. Overall, it was a lovely experience. Some of the "quirks" of the Palm are, I recognize, what give it charm. The server was friendly and attentive, mostly( We were seated and waited nearly 5 minutes to have our order taken and then 10 minutes following that to have our actual order taken- I'm going to blame it on the Restaurant Week Rush.). The Bud lights were something around $7 each - which is ABSURD. The issue with the palm was the consistency. The atmosphere was on the noisy/loud end as we sat in a corner and had to lean in to hear the other party members. When it comes down to it, the Palm is a great place to go for Restaurant Week, but not somewhere I would go and pay full price O_o read more

1. We had a reservation, were on time and had to wait 10+ minutes anyway (they said 5 minutes). Ok, fine. 2. They sat us, left us without menus, water, bread, attention... 3. We caught someone's attention and asked for all of the above 4. They brought really old bread and menus. Water came sometime later. 5. Waittress was "so so" at best, but at these prices, she sucked. 6. The chicken mousse was pretty good. The carppaccio was not evenly seasoned (some bland, some salty, etc)... so it was "ok." The lobster bisque was solid, but I wouldn't order it again. My ceasar salad was overdressed (drenched really) and soggy (sat in the dressing for wayyy too long), and when I told the waittress she said "uuh..ok. i'll be back," left and did other things for 10-15 minutes and brought back another ceasar on a smaller plate (went from a full size to a side plate). My lobster was overcooked (boo hoo), but the other two were fine... The asparagus was sadly overcooked and the french fries oversalted. The wild mushrooms were a tad too sweet, but my favorite thing of the meal. The filet mignon and NY strip were solid- cooked to our specifications, however some parts were burnt/ bland. When we asked for more bread for the chicken mousse (they give you 2 thin slices with 4-5oz of mousse?! Desserts were decent- key lime pie was ok. The flourless chocolate cake was good- the saving grace of their desserts that night. 7. In the end, it was over $250 for 3 of us, which is a decent chunk of change for a good steakhouse. All in all.. I'd say it was a fail. I would have given it 2.5 stars, but couldn't... I figured I'd round up as there were nice hosts/hostesses who started and ended the evening with a smile. 2.5 Every steak house has a personality---The Palm is somewhere in between The Prime Rib and Ray's(or at least the pictures). It seems to have The Prime Rib crowd--you know-- older, slightly pot bellied mover/shaker men, but the decor is more relaxed--must be those charicatures. I went with a few friends for restaraunt week and it was a good time to satisfy my curiousity. The lobster bisque tasted more like tomatoe bisque with a hint of seafood broth and no lobster chunks. My filet was fine--tender, as flavorful as a grilled steak could be and cooked as I had asked. The sides were pretty disappointing--steamed broccoli was not seasoned, which I can live with, but the mashed potatoes were reminiscent of bad elementary school cafeteria food from a box. I kid you not, they were grainy rehydrated pototes! The key lime pie, on the otherhand was wonderful--nicely tart with a great custardy texture. My dining partners commented that if they had to pay full price, they'd opt for Ray's. Not having been to Rays, I prefer The Prime Rib--so I guess that means none of us are itching to go back. Service was fine, though there was a slight air of who let in the riff raff, but otherwise, I'm glad I checked the place out, so I can move on to other places on my list. read more

Expensive, yet delicious food. I have had a chilean sea bass here that was worldclass. Every bite was amazing. The waitstaff is very friendly and accomodating and the walls are covered with faces of DC hotshots who frequent or have been to that restaurant. Every time I have eaten here the experience has been just fine. It is a good place for a business meeting, but maybe not so much for a date. It does seem to be a pretty standard steakhouse, and I really can't think of anything super-special about it other than the faces on the walls. Therefore, this is someplace I would only go if someone else is paying~! read more
