The pancakes (while they only give you one), are as big as the plate. Dutch pancakes are a little thinner than what I am used to. It reminds me of a crepe more. The cheese is melted into the pancake, which adds crisp to the texture, and it's actually two layers stacked with pieces of ham and mushrooms inside like a sandwich. For dessert, we had the banana, chocolate and whip cream - just simple and good as you can expect! The portions are large enough to be shared between two, so we had leftovers, and I would have preferred smaller portions at reduced cost. The good thing is this place is close to a lot of tourist attractions and has lots of seating, so they will probably have a table for you if you find yourself visiting the Anne Frank House or Westerkerk. They have a spacious upstairs area that has room for small children to crawl around under the tables and such. The bad part is the pancakes are flipping expensive. The adult pancakes come in a million different varieties, but they cost 15 euros for one (1) pancake! I ordered the Norwegian pancake, which claimed to be filled with salmon and cream cheese, and instead was filled with a disgusting mayonnaise based salmon salad like one would buy in a grocery store. It was hard to distinguish what was in there exactly because everything was just a big pale white mush with anonymous pieces of food in it. There was a teeny tiny green salad next to it, and I bet the cost of the actual food was something like 2 euros at most, and I was paying 15 for it. It was crazy. The children's pancakes in contrast only cost 5 euros, which seems more reasonable. Their poffertjes were delicious and appropriately bathed in butter and sugar, and were also only around 6 euros. If you can, order off the children's menu. It has a large selection and the prices are way more reasonable. I don't know if the waiters will allow that if you're not a child, however. The service was also kind of iffy. Our waiter mixed up the ice cream orders for me and the other child at our table, so they both ended up with more ice cream than actually ordered, which was to the restaurant's advantage, since they charge something like 3 euros for an extra scoop of ice cream. It also took a long time to get my child's ice cream, which caused many many questions of "where's my ice cream?", and unnecessary tension. Scooping ice cream doesn't take that long, I don't understand what the hold up was. Another minus point is that on the menu they say they offer free tap water, but when I asked for water I was told they only offered bottled water, which is like 3 euros for one little glass of water. But it came with some ice cubes! The total cost for two adults and two children to order 1 pancake each, a drink each, and ice cream was 60 euros. Again, this is a crazy amount of money to pay for such simple food, but there aren't a lot of choices nearby for family friendly restaurants, so I think they take advantage of that. I did a little bit of research prior to visiting Amsterdam and learned that pancakes are kind of a big deal there! I couldn't leave without having some. This was one of three spots that kept popping up in searches, and the only one open when I decided I was ready to try some Poffertje. We ordered an "American style" pancake as well, since their version is thinner and much lighter than traditional American pancakes. For that one we decided to add some fun toppings since they have so many to choose from. We went with cherries and cream. Both pancakes were delicious, but those Poffertje are something sent straight from heaven! Would highly recommend coming here to try them. Great place to go and eat poffertjes in a central location. I ordered the Dutch poffertjes (vanilla ice cream, marinated cherries, cherry liquor, and powdered sugar) and a stroopwafel. The poffertjes and stroopwafel were very yummy. We barely had to wait for a table to 2 but I highly recommend getting a reservation as there was a long line when we were leaving. This is a convenient and delicious stop regardless of whether or not you're visiting the Anne Frank House. I stopped here twice, the first time after a visit to the aforementioned historic site when I tried a delicious pannekoek with apple, banana, and rum. The second time I went, I tried the Brazilian pannekoek (with walnut ice cream, mocha sauce, Amaretto, almonds, and whipped cream).. which was SO good, in fact, that I attempted a third visit. I just found a postcard and I tried to find this place the last time I was in Amsterdam. This place is so amazing! I ate here a couple years ago and had their Indonesian flare pancakes. We Americans call these "crepes." The restaunant is typically cowded and touristy but to say these were the absolute best crepes I have ever had is an understatement! We were just looking to have a quick dessert and when I read they had Indonesian pancakes and they were highly recommended by the server, I was in tastebud heaven, once this entered my mouth (hmm, this review is sounding...). Seems like it is THE place to get Dutch pancakes in Amsterdam, as a friend recommended this place when I said I will be in Amsterdam. A quick search on the internet and you will also find this place comes highly recommended, and on some days may encounter some lines. My friend and I had a long layover in Amsterdam and decided to make it a day trip. We landed at 7am and headed straight over to the Pancake Bakery to get breakfast. There was no line since we got there at 9am on the dot, but there were already a few tables seated. My friend and I got the omelette with ham, cheese and mushroom and the sweet pancake with banana and nutella. They were definitely a good size and huge. Some of the breakfast options come with coffee/juice, which was nice. The dutch pancakes was nice and thin, good texture - the omelette was good. Overall the breakfast was good, but not amazing, and not something to write home about. Either way, I did enjoy this place and would recommend, but I am sure there are much better cafe/breakfast options in Amsterdam and you don't have to go out of your way or wait in line if you don't have to. read more

Yum, yum, yum. I love pancakes, so during a recent trip to Amsterdam, had to have me some and these hit the mark. First praises to sing for the Pancake Bakery: availability of tables. My Yelper friends and I first trekked to Pancakes Amsterdam, only to discover it was packed. So we went on to the Pancake Bakery and on arriving ten minutes later, were seated immediately. Second, the service here is good. Quick, friendly, helpful. Okay, so I was slightly miffed that I had to wait 5-10 minutes longer for my wholewheat pancake than my white-flour-pancake-scoffing buddies Generally though it was impressive. Third, the pancakes are yum. Not boastful of the lightness of French crepes or even high-scoring in the looks department, but authentic and akin to home-made pancakes. I had two: a ham, cheese and mushroom savoury, followed (of course) by a plain syrup-topped sweet one. Two tips to note: the pancakes are big. I only had two because I was really hungry. For most people one savoury should be sufficient. Secondly, all the tables have bottles of syrup that isn't as sweet as the golden syrup we Brits are used to. Try spreading some on the savoury pancakes - it's surprisingly good! Overall? A good place to get your Dutch pancake fix without fear of disappointment. read more

We found out about "pancakes" (what Americans might instead call "crepes") while drinking/chatting with a local bartender and decided to give this place a go based on her recommendation. To me this place is just OK. The only disclaimer is that my impression is based on savory pancake only -- but honestly, I think it's hard to mess up OR impress with sweet pancakes (just put nutella on the pancake and it'll taste great). So I doubt trying the sweet pancakes would influence my scores. The pancake is not the American type of fluffy thick pancake. They are also not the French crepe. They claim that their pancake is somewhere in between, but I'd say it's really more like the crepe than the American pancake. The pancake is a bit more burnt and crispy than the crepe, but otherwise I feel the two are similar in concept and only differ in the details. We ordered the Egyptian and the Hungarian. The Hungarian tastes just like pizzas on ultra-thin crust... so nothing too special. The Egyptian is effectively meat wrapped in the pancake (or crepe, if that helps the imagination)... they taste fine, just not extraordinary or worthy of raving reviews. The portions are decent, enough to fill two people. The drinks are, as always, over-priced, but they don't provide water on tap (com'on, what do you use to cook your stuff then?) so you're probably bound to order something there. read more

My in-laws ordered a Norwegian Savory Pancake, and also a Ham one. The pancakes were excellent, though not the best I've ever had. Of the pancakes, my favorite was the Norwegian, which had smoked salmon, sour cream, and cheese. Simply divine with a squeeze of lemon and a pinch of salt. After finding out that my huge group of out-of-town guests wanted Dutch pancakes for lunch, I went on a mad hunt to find a place that would take reservations, be able to seat 8 people, for a Sunday afternoon. Thank goodness for Yelp! The Pancake Bakery was the answer to my prayers. This is one of the recommended pancake houses in Amsterdam and it is the largest one I've been to. And if you have more than 6 people you can make reservations, be sure to request a table on the upper floor; it is roomier and you get a great view of the canal. Unfortunately, if you don't have a reservation there is usually a huge queue outside. I would recommend avoiding this way during weekend brunch hours and try the late afternoon. Food: 4/5 This was the largest pancake menu I had ever seen, and there is something for everyone! Pancakes are the size of your head and tasty! If you are a light eater, share the pancake with someone. Service: 2/5 This place is very dimly lit and since we were stuffed all the way in the back, the staff completely forgot about us - this actually worked to our advantage because our friends were late and the place was packed! However, this also meant it took forever to order and get our food. They only have 4-5 pans cooking at one time, and the restaurant can hold well over 100 people. Which translates to you have to wait a very long time for your food. Atmosphere: 3/5 The ground floor is very dimly lit and the seating is pushed up against each other. It was very crowded and anywhere they could fit a chair, they did (though with no way of getting into the chair except climbing over the table). The 1st floor is much nicer and if you had a choice, go upstairs instead.
