Love this place! Happy that we were able to get a seat quickly here because reservations are a must! Inside may feel and look cramped but it is super cozy. We were able to get seated right on the window area. We chose menu 5, which was just enough for two people. Everything was delicious! Their pea soup is out of this world. Don't know why as it is a simple dish but wow! I also love their herring. It was so delicious that I wanted seconds. It paired so well with their onions and mustard. And their bitterballen was just enough bite. Creamy and crispy! We also got a combination of the hutspot. They were all delicious! Although for me the meatball was just a tad bit salty but it is probably just me! Everything else was spot on. I love their dessert at the end. It was a great way to end the night. Our server and their staff were all amazing! Very friendly and welcoming. Yes it is a tourist spot but totally worth it.
Came by for dinner the other night and it was a decent experience. The Pantry is a very popular traditional Dutch restaurant. Made a reservation and my table was ready upon arrival. Dining is available both indoors or outdoors. It was towards freezing when I went so the outdoor tables were available for walk-ins. Reservations are a good idea. Started off with the pea soup and it was different. The soup was pretty thick and tasted like peas. There were a couple slices of sausage that were placed over the soup. The soup was served with a slice of rye bread along with a piece of bacon...interesting to say the least. For the main, opted for the hutspot which was mashed potatoes with carrots, 3 scoops, along with a sausage. The mashed potatoes were ok, although I only managed to finish half a scoop. Portions were gigantic. The sausage was ok. The highlight of the meal was the Dutch apple pie. This was served warm. The pie was freshly baked and wasn't too sweet. It was filled with apples and topped with white powdered sugar. This was also served with a side of whipped cream. The interior of the restaurant is cramped and the staff were wonderful. They take credit cards.
Authentic Dutch food at quite reasonable prices makes this spot hugely popular. How popular? Well, we came on a Tuesday night and everything was booked. Fortunately, our nice hostess said a reservation was canceled and hooked us up. Inside is quite small and sitting and dining right next to a stranger is a strong possibility. But there's comfortable, unpretentious, chill vibe here. Love the decorations inside and the staff is very pleasant. You can order individual items from their large menu, but these nice folks have made it easier for you by having a prefix menu of three-course meals that consist of popular Dutch cuisine. Ordered the number three on their special menu: - 1st course - 3 sausages, bread, pickles and mustard - 8/10: not sure what kind of sausages these were, but one had the texture of pate, the other was like steak tartare, and the last had a bit of snap to the casing. They were all very tasty, but the last one was particularly good. - Main course - 7.5/10 - Beef and onion stew with mashed potatoes and red cabbage. Loved the beef. Very tender cuts that you can knife through with a spoon. Sides were just OK. Wasn't a big fan of the red cabbage though. Tasted sweet like cranberry sauce, but a bit too much of it that you couldn't really taste the cabbage. - Dessert - Chocolate mousse, chocalate ice cream and eggnog - 7.5/10: mousse and ice cream were perfectly fine, but the eggnog had some serious alcohol in it. I think it must've been 80 proof. This is not a bad thing at all. Terrific dinner from terrific people. Definitely recommend.
SERVICE: The service was great! Of note, if there's a wait (and you don't have a reservation) you have to stay outside the front of the restaurant the whole time, you cannot walk around anywhere even if your wait is expected to be 40mins. Friendly host and servers! Patient, kind, and efficient. FOOD: Dutch food. Variety of fish and meat dishes. I had cabbage, beef stew, and mashed potatoes Their bitterballen was very good! I tried some of my friends. Limited drink options (cocktail wise), but can make a gin and seltzer or vodka seltzer. Many beer and wine options. Ambiance, cool eclectic decor inside however seating is very close/tight and tables are only a few inches from one another so don't come with large bags or expect to have space to move around once you've sat down.
Very tiny restaurant like most restaurants in this area. Space is very tight and you're very close to the next tables. In and out is not easy but they make do. We tried menu #1 and the pork chop. On the menu #1: pea soup 4/5; yummy. The meat on the side is ok but the soup is flavorful. The meat ball with the different mash potato is ok 3.5/5. The desert at the end is just yogurt, 2/5. The pork chop is good. 4/5. Not dry. Tasty. Alfa beer: the least I like out of all beer I've tried so far in Amsterdam. 2/5.
The pea soup is soooo fire. First time having it and I must say it is now my favorite soup. My boyfriend got the oven dish. He rated it 4/5, it's simple. My dish was a meat ball and mash potatoes, it was delicious. The portion was so large I had 2 meals! Service was amazing, super funny and warming. We went at 5pm for a table with no reservation. We don't normally eat dinner than early but had to make sure we got a seat here! Would definitely come back. oh and this is our first time trying traditional Dutch cuisine!
Very charm and tiny restaurant that serves traditional Dutch food. It was crowded during lunch time, but the servers are all attentive, fluent in English and get us seated within a reasonable wait time. My party ordered a combination of 3 Dutch sausages. It tastes fine. I love the pea soup, the ham and the caramel waffle with ice cream. My overall dining experience here was awesome. I will recommend this restaurant to people who want to try traditional Dutch food.
This lovely restaurant lives up to all the positive reviews. Such a cute and inviting atmosphere, delicious food, and warm friendly service as well. The ham dish was actually a wonderfully cooked pork knuckle that was sublime. Several also ordered the set menus and they were all delicious. Given our short amount of time, we couldn't make it to a herring stand, so to let our nephews try salted/picked herring for the first time, we ordered it here. To my delight, they were every bit as good as getting them from the stands. We all enjoyed them immensely.
In all my visits to Amsterdam (and there have been plenty in the last three years), I never went out of my way to try authentic Dutch food. Well, The Pantry is the Amsterdam institution for Dutch food, so I made my way over here after making a reservation. And DEFINITELY make a reservation...saw plenty of people get rejected at the door. Ordered the Bitterballen (because of course you must order Bitterballen if you are getting Dutch food) and Salted Herring with Onions and Pickles as appetizers. Of course I have at least had Bitterballen before and this was definitely very solid. The mustard that it came with was perfect for it. It was also the first time that I have tried pickled herring. And I actually liked it a lot! Had great taste. The chopped onions it came with added some bite to it. For entrées, we ordered the Bloemkoolstamppot (Mashed Potatoes Mixed with Cauliflower) served with a Smoked Sausage as well as the Savory Beef and Onion Stew (with Red Cabbage and Mashed Potatoes). Both were excellent! Just felt like I was at home eating some very nice homemade food. Hit the spot! Staff here were super friendly. Made some great suggestions as to what we should order. The ambience in here makes you feel like you're actually in a home. Very warm and cozy with the tables close together. Don't know why I've been denying myself on Dutch food for so long because it's pretty damn good. Need to come back!
I wanted to try "Amsterdam(Netherland) traditional meal", so I checked here. This place is very famous especially for the tourist (of course, there are local customers too) so highly recommended to make a reservation. Luckily I and my husband made it without reservation but waited for about hour. It's cozy restaurant and was super crowded but servere(especially a woman) was super nice. If you visit first time, recommend to order their course. They have five kinds of course that can enjoy the Netherland's meals. I chose Menu 1(Dutch Delight menu) and my husband chose Menu 2(Grandmothers kitchen menu). Menu 1 comes with Pea-Soup with rye bread and smoked bacon, Combination of Hutspot, zuurkool-en boerenkoolstamppot served with a smoked sausage or a meatball, Vlaflip (vanilla custard with yoghurt and syrup). Menu 2 comes with Dutch goat cheese croquettes (3), Oven dish with cauliflower, ground beef, Old Amsterdam cheese, curry onions and mashed potatoes, Poffertjes (Mini pancakes served with butter and powdered sugar). All food was so good and we really enjoyed Netherland's meal dinner.
This place is very small so you absolutely need reservations. We tried 1-week out and only got lunch availability which was fine for our day. Some came by and sadly were turned away as there was no chance of getting in. Service was very welcoming and friendly. This place is so busy that you're packed in pretty tightly. Food was very tasty traditional Dutch offerings which is exactly what we wanted for our lunch. Filling and good. Don't forget to reserve your lunch or dinner if you want to eat here, and try 2-weeks out if possible. Enjoy!

Awesome dining experience! Arrived on a Monday around 2pm and it was quite bustling; almost all the tables were taken but luckily we didn't have to wait. We were looking for a place with traditional Dutch food and this place did not disappoint! Both meals we tried were delicious and fresh. We paired them with local wine and beer, also very tasty and a great accompaniment. Ambiance was also very cute with traditional decorations and a sweet homey vibe. Would love to go back on my next Amsterdam trip! read more

i think this place is great for those who have never tried authentic dutch cuisine as they offer a large variety of dutch dishes. i ordered the bitterballen which as delicious and reminded me of porto's potato balls. we also got the combo stamppot with sausage. objectively, it wasn't bad but i just don't think I am a fan of dutch cuisine in general! read more

Nice experience, the staff is super kind and while the restaurant is often jam packed we were seated earlier than our reservation time at 10pm after waiting 30 min. For food we ordered the fish combination plate to try smoked eel, pickled herring and Dutch shrimp. I personally loved the shrimp and eel (similar to smoked salmon in flavor) but the pickled herring for me was not pickled enough and didn't have much flavor. We also got the shrimp croquettes which were nicely fried but a big heavy. It's essentially a shrimp version of bitterballen. We also got the steak and chicken satay for entrees. The steak was just ok - the cook was good but the cut of meat just wasn't very flavorful or tender. It's definitely much harder to find good steak in Europe compared to the US. The chicken satay was a bit of a gamble but it was yummy with a good peanut sauce and we liked the fresh salad that accompanied it. read more
Came here for some traditional Dutch food. I ended up getting the Hutspot with a meatball (instead of the sausage). I felt like the meatball needed some seasoning, so I just got every bite with some of the mashed potetos/carrots and gravy. That helped a lot. I washed it all down with an apple juice. Service was good but restaurant is small. I recommend making a resy online! read more
Very good traditional Dutch restaurant. It's the best one I found in Amsterdam. They have pre fix meals that are a good option and easy way to try things, especially if you don't know what to order. The staff are multilingual and friendly. Make sure you have reservations it's busy. Old style decor inside it's worth trying. read more
Super tiny place, don't be surprised if you end up sharing your table with strangers! It was warm and chaotic in there but the waitstaff was incredibly bubbly and chipper. I ordered the what I call mashed potatoes combo sampler with smoked sausage. They proved me right in that you can never go wrong with mashed potatoes even if you add sauerkraut or kale. But the smoked sausage was the star. I'm from Texas y'all and this was amazingly smoky flavored and delicious. This was a great place to sample traditional Dutch food and in a location close to many places you can walk off that food to! read more
As our only night in Amsterdam, we settled on coming here. It was a walk to it from our hotel. But when we got there, it was super crowded. They had a wait for tables, but luckily we got seated quickly before the true rush began. Also, having a reservation is always good and I would highly recommend it.The seating and tables were very close together, so I guess if you enjoy nice open spaces in restaurants, this might not be a spot that would be interested in. However, if you don't mind the tight spaces, this place is a wonderful spot to visit and eat at. Indoors, again while cozy, was very well decorated with all sorts of things hanging on the walls to stare at. The ambiance was busy, but a good type of busy and not chaotic. So what did I get? We first started off the meal with croquettes. The mustard sauce was great compliment. After that, I ordered the beef stew with potatoes and red cabbage as my main dish. I wanted to get something different, but the stew was a staple. It was tasty! Though, knowing beef stew can be a bore at sometimes this place had a good amount of flavor. It came along with red cabbage and a mound of mashed potatoes. For dessert, we shared the apple pie with whipped cream and it was tasty! And to pair with the dessert I had to definitely try out the liquer, which was elderflower flavored. I would definitely recommend to try the liquer here as they're the ones who make them! Overall, would definitely recommend The Pantry. I would have to say though to reserve a table before going. It gets super busy, and if you don't get a table you might be waiting for a while. Big parties, probably not the best idea either, but there are bigger tables outside. The food was great, the service was great as well, so I would definitely recommend this restaurant! read more
Fantastic Authentic Dutch cuisine. Such quaint and beautiful restaurant. Staff was extremely helpful and friendly. It's highly popular with tourists and locals. The restaurant is very small and gets crowded and tight very quickly but that's part of the Dutch culture. The decor is absolutely stunning and traditional. Definitely worth a try if you haven't been. Anything on the menu looks wonderful. The menu is only 2 pages long, but comes in about 7 different languages. Food is wonderful. Tried the gerookte osseworst appetizer and it was AMAZING the main meal was great, but the stroopwafel ice cream was my highlight. read more

We were happy to make a re a reservation ahead of time. We picked meal#5 which includes pea soup, sausage, meatball, and a collection potato veg balls. Desert includes yogurt and poffertjes. All dishes are well made and delicious. This is a great place to get traditional Dutch food for tourists like us. read more

For our last night in Amsterdam we wanted to have a traditional Dutch meal, so based on Yelp reviews my husband chose The Pantry, and I'm so happy he did. We truly enjoyed our meal. The restaurant staff was so warm and welcoming, the environment was cozy, and the food was yummy. They had 4 meal "specials" to choose from with an appetizer, main dish, and dessert. This restaurant is very small, cramped and stuffy but the food is traditional Dutch food and tasted lovely and the waitresses were attentive and friendly. However looks can be deceiving. Firstly I couldn't see a drinks menu so ordered a Coke that came without ice. I ordered the number 3 menu which was a selection of sausages, beef stew and what I thought was included in the price I got charged separately for which was the chocolate mousse and eggnog so when the bill came I was surprised by the extra costs and the 9% service charge. I felt like they have taken advantage of a young woman who was on her own and I guess they did as I didn't say anything but an absolute joke and a bunch of conning money grabbers, please be aware and speak up, wish I had! read more

This place is incredibly welcoming and accommodating. We had missed our reservation due to our flight being delayed and they managed to get us in when we finally arrived in person. The atmosphere is quaint and charming, and the food was absolutely delicious. Would highly recommend visiting, and making reservations if possible as it is a small space with limited seating. read more

Absolutely amazing hospitality! We loved trying traditional Dutch food tonight at dinner for our honeymoon. Everyone made sure that we were well taken care of and shared some of the local spirits with us for our celebration. Cute interior with traditional decor and plates. We ordered the #2 & #3 meal specials. Highly recommend to try this place and make a reservation a week in advanced! read more

We highly enjoyed the Dutch goat cheese croquettes. Probably could have used a second order since there are only three small ones. The sausage was good and the food felt very traditional. I did not love everything, but the food was outside my comfort zone and that is no reflection on the quality. Our waiter recommended a great light beer that I enjoyed. We ended our meal with mini pancakes. I felt like they have a great portion size for those. It would be helpful to have a reservation here, but we did not have one and were able to get a table for two fairly quickly. Inside has a nice local aesthetic. Smaller restaurant. read more

This was a cool spot! We had traditional Dutch food. The wait staff were pretty friendly. They even went all the way to their storage (off site) to fetch a bottle of port for me to try. Definitely get a reservation as it is a small space. I would recommend! read more

I have to say that this has been my most favorite place to go when im here Its 2023 and im glad they still exist The food are still good, you just have to make reservations before coming even on a Sunday They have a combination menu which is more affordable and your tummy will be full! You will get the soup to dessert for a pirce of 22€ I chose menu#1 The ambiance is still cool though its really tiny read more
Very happening place in Amsterdam. Be prepared to wait if you do not have a reservation. Waited 1 hour, 24 minutes to be seated outside in the cold because it was full. Several people waited too. Waiter was nice and kept updating us for wait time. Good customer service and friendly. Got salmon and mashed potatoes and it was delicious. My sis got a vegetarian meal and she said it was good. Cabbage was good. Expensive like everything else in Amsterdam but worth the try. Would I wait again in the cold, maybe not but wanted to try the food since it received good review. read more

This restaurant is very small. It's highly suggested that you get a reservation. We lucked out and showed up at opening and got a table. A few after us were turned away for not having a reservation. Traditional Dutch home style food here. Food that makes you warm and fuzzy inside. Staff are friendly and food is quite filling. read more

Amazing staff with amazing food! I cannot recommend this place enough but I do recommend making a reservation as they do stay full. The atmosphere is very homey and the staff make you feel very welcome and are super genuine. The best meal I've had in Europe during my vacation, loved the shrimp croquettes and the sea bass with mashed potatoes and veggies were delicious. My boyfriend had the hutspot with sausage and the portion was huge, he ate the entire plate. Lastly the caramel ice cream With caramel waffle and whip cream didn't stand a chance lol if I'm ever back in Amsterdam I will make sure I come back! read more

Excellent food and friendly service. We had the bitterballen, beef stew with mash and cabbage, and combination hutspot, boerenkoolstamppot, and zuurkoolstamppot with sausage. Washed it down with their homemade trippel. Everything was delicious and our plates were cleaned! Will be coming back here again to try the rest of the menu. Thanks for your hospitality! read more

Our 1st experience with authentic Dutch food and we loved it. They gave us the best recommendations and were so sweet and friendly. They accommodated us for dinner cuz we were leaving the next day. Food was excellent we had the menu 1 and everything was tasty and hearty. We added 2 started and shared my husband and I and were very full. Good traditional Dutch restaurant. The service was definitely nicer to us once they found out we had a reservation. Before that, they just kept bouncing us between people saying "oh my colleague will talk to you" when none of them wanted to talk to us lol. The food was def hearty Dutch food and I got thr hutpot with sausage. The sausage was super salty and the gravy and potatoes were bland, so together they made a good combo. The bitterballen tasted a bit over fried, either fried too long or fried in old oil, had that kinda burnt taste. Partner liked the fondue here better than in Paris. Slightly different cheese and he preferred it here. read more

Great location for post museum meal. Just a few minutes walk from the Rijksmuseum. We sat outside at this charming busy spot, and had a hearty meal as we watched the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam go by. The blankets provided on the back of each chair was a nice touch- and were being used by most. . We selected one of the daily specials that started with goat cheese croquettes on a bed of greens, then to a traditional Dutch dish of cauliflower, ground beef, potatoes, onions in a creamy curry, cheese sauce that was outstanding. It was served piping hot in an oval Ramekin. Perfect for sharing and hearty enough for two. Dessert was Dutch pancakes with butter and powdered sugar. Service was fantastic, cheerful and very attentive. Can't wait to go back before the end of our holiday. read more
