I'm not being generous, I'm being honest. The food isn't great but the service, alcohol menu and ambiance make up for it. The staff was warm and friendly. Very patient with me and my daughter when we questioned the menu. She enjoyed her sausage wrap but the salad that came with it wasn't great. I had the burger - it was mostly bread but tasty. Food came out quick and it was delicious. I had the bangers and mash here and love the food! I could eat the food in Dublin all day, even though it's very heavy but so delicious w/ the sausages and mashed potatoes. Others in my party had the fish n chips and salads. This place is so cute and just steps away from the Kilmainham Gail. It was a rainy day so we ran in here for lunch after our tour and it did not disappoint. Cute tall booths lined the wall along with tables in the middle and a large bar. This restaurant has daily specials. We opted for the Guinness stew with mashed potatoes. It's conveniently right across the street from the prison (can't just walk in there) so it became a pit stop while waiting for my tour. Ordered the classic burger and fries and the sandwich itself was huge with more than half of it bread. The beef patty was pretty large as well, and garlic in flavor. It's a good place for large groups they can easily accommodate, or if you need convenience, but the food itself wasn't spectacular enough to make me want to go out of my way there again. Go on the prison tour in Dublin you got to stop off at The Patriots Inn for a pint right? Wish I hadn't (face palm) Not only do you get slapped in the face with the smell of hot piss you get the worst welcoming from the servers. We made an order for some shots and coffees they take our money and proceed to take and serve other orders in front of us pouring pints and talking to others ignoring us completely. After asking and taking over 10mins for our shots ask for our money back so we can move to the next part of our trip. We now have some old Irishmen yelling at us "take your shots and leave" (wish we could but we don't have them) then to "This is why no one likes you Americans" I don't want this to effect how I feel about Ireland most people I meant were welcoming and inviting to us we were just on a busy schedule. I'd love to send them a Christmas gift a nice bucket, soap, sponges, gloves, and if they would use it a mob so they could clean that smell of piss out of there. If you decide to go on the prison tour, and need to stop in at a pub look no further than the patriots inn not only does it have a sweet aroma of piss when you walk into it you're greeted with such great customer service that they yell at you and call you fucking assholes for wondering where your shots are after taking your money and then serving all the other people in the bar. For Christmas I'm thinking about sending them a bucket soap and sponges along with gloves just so they can clean that shit hope thank God I didn't try anything on their menu because who knows what that fucking kitchen looks or smells like. Came in on a whim since my husband and I came for the jail across the street and got hungry after the tour. It has a really laid back vibe - no fancy frills going on which is fine. They had some pretty standard Irish pub fare. There wasn't any wait and some body came by pretty quick to seat us. My husband ordered the "chicken goujons" - which I found out was just US chicken fingers lol. And I ordered the pork and leek sausage. My husband's food was excellent - really some of finest fried chicken I've had to be fair. My sausage was ok. But the mash potatoes it came in was good. The only gripe I had was at the end where after we ate and finished and asked for the check they made us sit around for about 15 minutes - for nervous that maybe I needed to go to the bar to pay and I was wasting everyone's time lol. Which in the US would be true since those waiting folks need to be turning tables pretty frequently. Located across the junction from Kilmainham Gaol and The Irish Museum of Modern Art, Patriots Inn offers hot food, cold pints and a place to rest weary sneakers to plenty of visitors every year. There's shed loads of history packed into these rooms -read the lengthy lesson at the pub's website. Now, onto my unpatriotism: Getting into the main area of Patriot's Inn is confusing to the first-timer. Maybe it's the location, maybe it's the building, but the pub's split-level drinking areas create an awkward warren of low-ceilinged and narrow rooms. And, while I love a quirky old man's pub as much as the next pint sipper, multiple entrances which enter onto completely separate areas (which cannot be reached easily from inside one to the other) does not a good drinking experience make. Also, as often as new faces must darken the doors here it certainly didn't stop the locals from staring me out of it as I looked for a seat. But I want to like this place. I'm already half convinced by the website (with promises of Karaoke nights and Darts) and it's showy, flag draped exterior. Next time you're in Kilmainham let's meet up and give this place another shot... whaddya say? read more

My wife and I stopped for a bite after checking out Kilmainham Gaol. She had the vegetable soup with a hearty slice of bread, and I had the bangers and mash. My wife loved the soup perfectly spiced and you could taste the herbs. I ordered the bangers and mash, and I must say the bangers and mash were the best I've had to date. The patriots is my local pub. I've been here many times before, during the day or in the evenings. The karaoke on Saturday night is great fun. All the regulars get up and have a sing song aswel as a few holiday makers that would be staying in the Hilton hotel across the road. The food is really good during the day, sandwiches, chips, goujons, burgers, stew, steak sandwiches, full Irish breakfast etc. There's something for everyone! :) in the evenings when the pubs kitchen is closed, customers can order food at the bar from the restaurant upstairs La Dolce Vita. The pizzas are really good, as you'd expect from an Italian restaurant :P The service is great in the pub, all the staff are very friendly and welcoming. The Patriots also has a smoking area and free WiFi when you request the code. Most nights there is some for of entertainment. I think comedy nights are on Wednesday, Thursday is bingo, Friday there does be a band, or music and Saturdays are karaoke. I would definitely recommend this place to pop in for a cold pint or some lunch :) read more

They dont hide the fact that food is prepared in a room beside where you sit.The "PING" of the microwave didnt help.The girl who made the food dropped it over, complete with blue hygiene gloves. The sandwich was toasted.But it was just white pan bread, god-awful watery lettuce,and streaky bacon and huge chunks of tomato. The toasting aspect meant the top side of the sandwich was crispy,but the other side was warm and squidgy from the tomato and lettuce being so wet. The coffee was lovely thank god. But I was still hungry so went looking for chocolate. I ended up getting a shortbread cake thingy and while it wasnt made by the pub it tasted awful aswell. Wouldnt in a million years eat here again. Jumped over for some food and drink while waiting for my tour at the gaol to start. I was the only customer, and with no music, I felt like the place hadn't really opened yet. When I got used to the silence, I actually kind of enjoyed it, rather than the background noise I'm used to. I love all the decorations for Halloween, and the stage looks exciting- this place looks like it could easily be heaving of a night. Only thing that was slightly worrying was a sign forbidding dancing in the interests of public safety. I can't comment too much because a) maybe people dance dangerously to exciting irish tunes b) im hoping actually that the sign is a joke, and c) there wasn't much space for dancing and twirling people picking up chairs and tables on their way round could be quite a problem I guess. read more

Historical pub in a very old part of Dublin - part of the Liberities. The pub has an unchanged feel about it, a timelessness, hasn't seen the changes that many pubs in Dublin have. It's also been a witness to Irish history, just beside the famous Kilmainham jail, now a museum; has been part of many events in Irish history, which centred in the prison. The very real signs of this are evident, when you walk in - the walls are adorned with some original and unique photos - b & w's of many of those events in Irish history. The Patriots Inn is a small Pub, serving up some great standard Pub food. Stopped by for lunch with a party of 8 on a Saturday afternoon, and had no problems pulling tables together to accommodate us. Many of the tables are unique, that they are low and stools make up the seating. There are some bench seating around the edge for a taller sitting arrangement. Greeted as we walked in, and directed to the back for more seating, by one of the pub patrons (signs of a friendly place). They had a variety of drinks as other pubs, and a limited menu. All the food we ordered was served freshly made, and hot to our table. Standouts of the meal, Irish Aged burger and the Goat Cheese Salad, one note of difference was the Club sandwich was served with an egg on top, which gave it a richness that other clubs don't have. Live music on Thursday nights. I wouldn't go there if it wasn't for the good show Rob and his friend put on thursdays. The staff is nice though but the pub was filled with men and the two girls we were felt uncomfortable most of the time being starred at and everything. As a first i had a Black Guinness.
