Like General Douglas MacArthur, we returned nine months after our initial stay for four additional nights. This visit was not quite the same with several notable differences. The room was smaller likely because this time we booked a king whereas last time we had a pair of queens. There were other differences, I secured a much lower room rate with breakfast included by booking early. Gone is the resort fee of $20 plus tax per night previously paid, new is a self parking (we saw no valet) fee of $10 plus tax. Included in the prior resort fee was a $15 daily credit for the Helmway, their in-house restaurant. The lawn behind the hotel where I previously walked our dog is gone to be replaced by an in ground pool, fire pit and gardens, however, the "improvements" scheduled to be completed in June were a work-in-progress though we observed little in the way of work during our stay. A real positive, noted previously as well, was the quality of the daily room servicing. Since we departed and returned to our room relatively early each day, we requested early room service which was kindly accommodated. On the negative side of the ledger, our mattress slipped partially off its frame whenever we read and/or watched TV. Also, the lighting fixtures beside the bed were not very bright so I had difficulty reading. Another annoying feature was the micro sized toilet paper. Overall we were relatively happy with our stay and would not hesitate to recommend this property to others seeking pet friendly accommodations on Aquidneck Island. read more

I enjoyed my stay at the Pell. I booked a 2-night stay for Valentine/Presidents day weekend. They don't currently have an elevator, but they carried our luggage upstairs for us. It is dog friendly which is important for us. The tv includes Google cast to connect your favorite streaming service. Though most of our time was spent outside exploring Rhode Island. We had dinner at the Helmway restaurant which was the only thing we didn't really enjoy about the hotel to be honest. They were apologetic when we checked out. They are renovating and including a pool in June so we are excited to come back in the summer. read more

We were given a "gift" night stay. 6/17/26. The construction noise and mess was disturbing. Room was wonderful. Staff was excellent. I was charged a $10 fee to park one night. Two candy bars, and two tiny potato chips cost$15. (plus tax). Breakfast looked pretty but tasted awful . Home fries rubbery and tasteless. Omelettes were burnt and dry. Breakfast: $55..52 ( tip extra). Overall score: 4 out of ten read more

I been to alot of hotels and this one is clean. Hotel is basically a long hallway with rooms. Workers seem nice. Hotel is located in driving distances to beaches and Newport but I came at the winter time so obviously, there is nothing much to do in the area when it is cold out. Only complaints are the rooms do not insulate noises well from neighboring rooms. From my room with the door closed, I can hear the neighbors talking, laughing, kids running around stomping, and TV playing from next door. That is really the only frustrating thing. Showers are good. No weird taste in water when brushing teeth. They do use soft water that makes my skin feel slippery during the shower, which I wasnt use to. Gym it's pretty standard. I stop by frequently to refill my water bottle. Overall, I recommend this hotel but only when it is not cold outside. Otherwise there is nothing to do in the location. read more

I was a little afraid to book here cause of some reviews about the smoke detector issue. I didn't encounter any issue and was told if the smoke detector is triggered, they will come to check it out to make sure it's not false alert. Place is nice and I like they have a big dining room where we can socialize. Bathroom soap is fragrant. There's mini fridge in each room. We booked 2 queens rooms and since we got an infant, they put us in a larger queen room with a crib, which is appreciated. Deducted 1 star cause building structure didn't seem to be noise insulated. I can hear people running around upstairs which bothered me from sleeping. I don't know if the wall is also thin since I came during low season. Also, there's a resort fee and it's annoying that the front desk mentioned that I can get $15 daily credit for f&b but left out requirement that it has to done using multiple transactions. Even though I stayed 2 nights and purchased f&b in 1 transaction, I only got $15 instead of $30 credit. This should have been clarified upfront to prevent misunderstanding. read more

The Pell was great! It's away from the "main drag", which offers a little more quiet. However, we were able to be in the heart of Newport with a quick Uber. The hotel room was spacious and clean. There was a bar/restaurant that was perfect for happy hour and brunch. The staff was polite and helpful. Convenient check-in/out. I enjoyed my stay and would definitely return. read more

This place *routinely* scams paying customers for $500; accusing each and every one of smoking in their room. They have sensors in each room that act as judge, jury, and executioner in fleecing their own paying customers for $500. Here's a blurb from a recent article exposing this scam: "At the center of these disputed fees is a product called Rest Sensor, which is a device marketed as a high-tech way for hotels to enforce no-smoking policies. The sensors claim to detect smoking with advanced algorithms, but many believe it's just a money grab. According to the company's website, a Rest Sensor detects smoking in hotel rooms by monitoring air quality and analyzing factors like temperature and chemical levels. If it senses smoking, it automatically alerts hotel staff and provides a digital "evidence report" with time-stamped charts. Hotels are pitching this sensor as a way to "easily enforce no-smoking policies" and even "collect fines with confidence." The website claims their product is a win-win for everyone, including owners and guests. According to the company's website, Rest Sensor can increase a hotel's smoking fine revenue by 84 times, potentially generating $1,200 per room each year in extra income. The device itself installs in under five minutes, connects to Wi-Fi, and operates continuously. In addition, Rest says it's privacy-compliant with no cameras or audio recording. My wife and her sister had a nice stay at this hotel, however the general manager Erik Berlied is simply awful to work with. My and her sister don't smoke. The morning of their departure they went and ate breakfast, proceeded to check out. For whatever reason they checked out at 9:07, we're not handed a receipt from their stay. Erik emailed this bill later on in the day where they received a $500 charge. Added to the bill. As she reviewed the bill she had immediately called the hotel, spoke with Erik, where he essentially threatened her saying"it wouldn't be good for her if she came back to the Pell." Erik, explained he can't trust people's credibility due to people lying to him in the past. Throughout about 15 calls elevating this case to the Hyatt corporate offices. We were not able to receive the money Erik stole from us. Erik had told me that he spoke with the housekeeping, they told him there was no additional cleaning required in the room after my wife's stay. I had spoke with him, and had explained the sensors he has in the room should be checked and maintained regularly. In the industry I work we have quarterly checks for equipment. He stated to me he has no knowledge of the system needing such checks. As I have stated above my wife and her sister don't smoke, don't vape. This charge was a fraudulent and really a dis-service, the hotel refuses to right the wrong of. I wouldn't recommend anyone stay at this hotel. The amount of dishonesty is amazing. I had a great 2 night stay at the end of June 2023. They're still finishing up the remodel around the hotel, including the restaurant and pool. While there were a couple minor inconveniences, it was still a great stay and this place has a ton of potential. I should also mention there is NOT an elevator, so if that's needed be sure to call and request a first floor room; there's only two floors I believe. All of the staff was very friendly and helpful. Everything is brand new and clean in the hotel. The bed was comfortable and the room was quiet; I never heard neighbors, slamming doors, etc. Also, the location itself is quiet. You're just 2 miles from the hustle and bustle of Newport but it's a calm area surrounding the hotel. At checkout they inquired about the stay and asked for feedback as they're still trying to workout the kinks of opening. I will definitely stay here again. read more

I had such a wonderful experience at this hotel! Eric, the general manager, went above and beyond to help me. My phone was dying late at night, and since my family was asleep, I didn't want to wake them up. Eric kindly gave me a charger, sat and talked with me, and even helped fix my phone since it was glitching and I couldn't check my messages. Who knew I'd meet such a smart and kind IT guy right down the hall at the perfect time! I'm here visiting my little brother, who just graduated from Navy officer school, and this stay has been amazing from start to finish. The hotel is spotless, the food is great, and the entire staff has been so friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend staying here! read more

I stayed at The Pell Hotel and thought I got a great deal on the cost of the room, until I was wrongly charged $500 for smoking even though I didn't smoke and was alone in Room 223 when the charge occurred. On the morning of April 25, while getting ready for my son's Officer Candidate School graduation ceremony, I used a hairdryer in the bathroom. The manager, Brandon, showed me a detector chart with a sharp spike lasting over 30 minutes, exactly matching that time. I spoke with Erik, the General Manager, who said they've tested the detectors themselves and "never" refund these charges because "everyone who is charged the smoking fee lies and claims they didn't do it." No opportunity for explanation, no escalation. As a nurse practitioner, trusted to prescribe controlled medications, I value honesty. Even the best detectors can misread heat or aerosols. Stay here at your own risk--there's no fair process if something goes wrong and $500 is a steep price to pay for something you didn't do. We always love coming to the Helmway Bar at the Pell Hotel! Maureen is the best bartender, and provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere. I feel like in a previous life, I could see her running one of those iconic Old West bars, chatting with her patrons and providing sass and sparkle as she pours and mixes beverages! A total highlight. The space is newly renovated, with bright and airy interior inspired by a nautical flair. The decor is standard for the area, but the bar is a gorgeous grey marble color that works great for Instagramming drinks upon! I love sitting here and whiling away the time sipping on an Illy Cappuccino with extra foam. Ask for a drizzle of their house bourbon-infused caramel syrup (it's a Maureen secret menu trick!) We can't wait to come back to try out their menu. I see they have burger nights on Thursdays and a weekly open mic night to attract local musicians to perform. This is definitely a hidden gem worth trying. read more

The hotel charged us $45 dollars after our stay, when I called them and asked about the fee they called it a "resort fee" and said that Airbnb must have told us about the fee. What a wonderful surprise! Pet friendly doesn't always mean human-friendly, but this newly remodeled boutique hotel was a home run for my English setter and me. The staff was so friendly and the rooms were modern, well appointed and oh so clean!! The best surprise was the HUGE back-yard with furniture and games -- a great place to relax for humans and dogs. The fitness center looked well equipped, but I didn't use it. The location is ideal -- so close to Newport, but you aren't paying Newport prices. Looking forward to my return trip! read more

We stayed here over spring break and I'm so glad we did. Due to it being off season for Newport, we got a fabulous nightly rate. The hotel was fully renovated in the last year and has a modern and bright New England coastal vibe. I love the "living room" with the fireplace and bookcases filled with books just off the lobby. The rooms seemed very clean and I loved the spacious bathroom. My only complaint was that the floor in our room creaked and shook every time we walked. Thank god our room was over the lobby/restaurant otherwise, I would have been worried we would be disturbing neighbors below. Heads up: there aren't any elevators so you do have to lug your suitcases up the staircase. The restaurant was great for dinner time and the food was good but breakfast was very limited and underwhelming. The waitstaff was very friendly and attentive though, as was the front desk staff. read more

This hotel and very new ( i believed i was open 2 months ago) - it's clean, modern and is very close to Newport. I give 4 stars only because they are still working on the pool and their breakfast is kind of pricey to my taste ( $15.95) The kitchen just opened a weeks ago and the menu looks great. We only had drinks at the bar but those were GOOD. Instead of having just one drink we got seconds. Our bartender was amazing : funny, knowledgeable and personable. The manager was around too-- good sign ! We had dinner in town and didn't order any food but people who said at the bar said that their food good -- it's was definitely cheaper than was we paid for th similar items. 3.5 Stars Not luxurious but new, clean, and modern enough. The decor of the Pell reminds me of a bright, plain summer cottage. Our room was on the third floor, there's no elevators, so we had to take the stairs up. The room was a little bit narrow, with a large TV hung on the wall right at the foot of the bed. There was a small table and low chair. My only real complaint about the room was the shower head only directed a few streams of water, and the water pressure wasn't fast and frequent enough to have a really comfortable shower. This place is very clean, tastefully decorated, lots of common areas to spend time in together and very cozy. They have a bar and restaurant with a small menu but, it has enough choices. They may even have a good deal going on when you visit. Every staff member I interacted with, were very pleasant. I loved the bar. On Friday nights they have students come in from URI to play jazz music. Not sure if this is a regular thing or not. Our stay at the Pell Hotel was fine, until it was ruined by breakfast the last day. On Saturday, June 14, our group of four people each ordered the Eastern Omelet -- when in Rhode Island, enjoy the chorizo. Service was a little slow. Then, the omelets that arrived were hideous. The "omelets" were a weird brownish color, with no recognizable ingredients of chorizo, peppers, cheese or eggs. The tater tots that came with them were an over fried husk. We all thought, this is weird -- but since we needed to get on the road, we figured at least our $30 in "destination fee" credits would cover the bad food. Our understanding was that we, two couples in two rooms, each got back $15 per day credit for the restaurant, from the $20 "destination fee" charged per day. Busy with our own plans, we couldn't utilize the restaurant on Day 1. But we understood these credits could be used together. So after ordering the bad breakfast, we learned these "credits" were not cumulative, but had to be used different days. This was not clearly explained -- in fact it seemed intentionally confusing. In our cars driving home, we all compared notes and agreed -- the Pell restaurant had served us the worst breakfast we'd ever had. No competition. As for the hotel stay -- we'd made our own great weekend plans, seeing family and enjoying the area, and we'd found the Pell was a well-located, clean and pleasant place to serve as home base. We stayed for 3 nights at newly opened The Pell last weekend. This property is outstanding. It is beautifully renovated. The rooms are lovely and the beds are very comfortable. They have breakfast setup in the living room and there is a library. The breakfast was delicious. Dinner at the restaurant was our best dinner in Newport. The chef is legit! . The staff is wonderful; everyone makes your feel like you're a special guest. Great Gym with Peloton. I look forward to returning. This is now the only property I will stay in the Newport area. Came to the hotel for Memorial Day weekend. Hotel staff were very friendly and welcoming throughout the weekend. Facilities both inside and outside of the guest suite were in pristine condition, including the gym, which was one of the best hotel gyms I've experienced. Travel time to downtown Newport was no more than 15 minutes with traffic, so very convenient as well. I highly recommend this hotel for your next trip to Newport! read more

Perfect place to stay while attending a wedding weekend in Newport. The hotel is about 10 minutes from downtown Newport--easy to get to but far enough away from the hustle and bustle. We stayed in a double queen accessible room, and when we arrived, there were no chairs or a table as pictured on the website. We called the front desk, and they immediately delivered a table and two chairs to our room. The beds were very comfortable, and we loved the shower, which had two shower heads, one of them handheld. All the employees were very nice and personable. The only thing I wasn't impressed with was the breakfast buffet. We had it two mornings, and it was the same each day: cold scrambled eggs and hard pancakes. There was also bacon and sausage, coffee and juice, yogurt and fruit, cereal, and store-bought pastries and bread. read more

Avoid this hotel--it's not trustworthy. My mom stayed here and was wrongly charged $500 for 'vaping in the room,' even though she doesn't smoke at all and never did during her stay. There are plenty of better, more reputable options in Middletown and Newport. This kind of behavior is dishonest and unacceptable. read more

The staff was friendly and accommodating, we were allowed an early check-in, and the room was spacious, comfortable, and well laid out. They were out of soap but... you can't win 'em all. We checked into the Pell Hyatt on 6/9. Upon check out we were shocked to see a $500 smoking fee charged. We strongly denied smoking and had a heated exchange with Eric the manager at the property. Eric went upstairs and smelled the room and by his own admission smelled nothing smoke like. The only possible thing that could have tripped that sensor was my hair appliance which is a hair dryer brush. It is applied directly on wet hair and gets very hot. We were told this is impossible, the sensor is never wrong and that we are liars along with anyone else who claims this which if you look at this property's reviews was only a few weeks ago when a nurse also claimed this. We later found out the device tripped again, right before we checked out and dried my hair a short time before Eric went into the room himself and smelled no smoke. After a follow up call Eric did credit us for half the fee only because the $500 would not have to be used to clean because there was no smell of smoke. While we appreciate this it is not enough because we did not smoke or vape and wonder what they will do with the other $250 being it is not needed to clean. Hyatt may beat us out of the $250 but have so much more to lose in future business and reputation. Calling your guests liars and not even checking that maybe you are in fact wrong. Eric has also declined to respond to follow up emails so we are hoping someone from Hyatt will reach out to try and remedy this wrong. read more

this hotel is very nice and in a great location, however there is a hidden vaping fee which I think is absurd. I was charged $250 because a "detector" went off. this is concerning when there was no mention of a charge if this occurred. there was no smell to the room when we left and to justify a charge of that amount is terrible customer service. it's. hidden fee to make money. if that is the case then a sign should be added in each room to warn people. read more

It's clear they spent money updating the hotel and it was so much fun getting back to the hotel after dinner and enjoying an evening cocktail. No elevator in hotel and it's not even posted on website. I'm disabled, called ahead when someone told me about the elevator issue and they said I was on 3rd (top) floor and they couldn't do anything about it. Had to lug all my and my wife's bags up 1 flight, then go down long hallway, then up another flight. I literally felt like I was going to have a heart attack when I finished getting luggage into the room. So uncool! I love to give positive reviews on Hotels because people want their money's worth and just expect clean. I was at the Pell for a week for a work engagement. The room was pleasantly clean with modern amenities and even a nespresso machine for delightful (more than hotel adequate) morning coffee! They had an iron and a hairdryer! They have an incredible restaurant in the lobby. Best of all the surprises. Now to be honest about my review, I found it difficult to control my climate in my room. I wasn't able to raise the temp but it was of no real concern, I was comfortable. The walls are quite thin or my neighbor was quite deaf or a mixture of the two, nevertheless, I consider these luxury problems when traveling for work. Great value for your money and Rhode Island, if you've never been, is overwhelmingly charming! It's great to find another gem in this wonderful country we all have access too! We have a brief but incredibly comfortable stay at the Pell. This isn't the grandest hotel but it's simple, modern and clean. The entire property is 2 stories and there doesn't appear to be an elevator so perhaps request a first floor if you're expecting a lot of luggage. We were offered a free upgrade to their King Suite which was large enough to include a small round table and an armchair. The beds are very comfortable and there's complimentary coffee tea and water. There's a mini fridge and a small safe as well. I enjoy that they use full size toiletries in the bathroom so there's less environmental waste. But it's the small things that made my stay so comfortable. The TV is equipped with chrome cast so you can easily watch your favorite shows from your own streaming apps avoiding needing to log in on another device. There's also wireless charging on the clock which was very convenient. All in all this was a very pleasant stay with no complaints! read more
