Really was looking forward to enjoying drinks on the lawn. Everyone was super friendly until we got to the bar where no one acknowledged our existence. We waited 15 minutes and watched 5 bartenders with their heads down. No smiles, no eye contact. When we arrived, there were 6 people. We understood and waited patiently but as people trickled out, still no help. Maybe there was a switching of shifts happening and some form of communication would have been nice. A "Hi, how are you? Will be right with you" is not something they do there. Couldn't believe it. Never experienced anything like this and walked away disappointed. Greeted by a lovely hostess (working and visiting from Ireland whom I got to chat up a bit since my father's side is from Co Mayo and she was from Cork). We ventured to the lawn to sit and overlook the Cliff Walk on a beautiful July afternoon in the Wine Garden. The area features lovely Adirondack chairs and sun umbrellas to lounge and enjoy. Years ago walking the Cliff Walk we came upon a hotel that was lit and looked beautiful never suspecting a gift certificate would be forthcoming years later from our son for the same hotel! So special a spot we waited a year to check in celebrating our next anniversary. Luckily it was Daffodil Days in Newport where over 1.5 million were in bloom so we had a double reason. Friendliest and most charming staff we have ever encountered. From pre arrival phone calls including one announcing our room was ready an hour early to greetings during our stay making us feel like family. The complimentary chauffeur service to dinner ...or anywhere in town....was appreciated as even in off season Newport traffic can be daunting. After a fun but chilly afternoon walking around Newport, we came over to the Chanler to indulge at the hot chocolate bar. It's around the back of the property on a veranda which is enclosed by plastic and somewhat heated. We were warm enough with our jackets on even on a cold day. The views are spectacular and look right over the beach and the cliff walk. The hot chocolate itself was pricey at $13 per cup but it was excellent. Some "flaws": We were seated in the tented outside patio which was fine but it relied on very noisy heaters and temps at times quite hot. We grabbed drinks before dinner here and it is the cutest little place right on the water. It was decorated beautifully for the holidays. I would recommend going in time to watch the sunset. I ordered a fig cocktail which was a fitting drink for the season. It was not too sweet at all and made with a fig vodka. Our service was amazing. The bartender was kind and patient with my group. The Chanler may be the finest inn I have ever stayed at. The architecture is stunning. The decoration is top notch. But it is the service of the staff that puts it over the top in all categories. Never have I found each person I encountered to be of the highest quality - caring, smart, funny and personable. Of particular note are Page, Hannah, Kevin and Nicodemus Ignacius! Each of these people went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure our experience was 1st class AND THEY SUCCEEDED!!! And they all made their jobs look so easy (which cannot possibly be the truth). Kudos to each and every person on the staff! The Inn is taken care of beautifully - I did not see one thing out of place or dusty or dirty anywhere. I am not sure how the Chanler maintains such high standards but it is really without peer. The attention to detail is incredible. And I have not even mentioned the location; it is right on the cliff walk. The views of the ocean are fantastic - but the views of the inn itself are also stunning. And, if you want to get off property - although I do not know why you would need to - the village is just a short walk across the island. Let me tell you, The Chanler is the real deal. Stopped in after visiting a mansion decorated for Christmas. The Chandler offers a hot cocoa bar and a heated tent off of the main dining area. If the weather is good, you could take your hot cocoa and walk along the cliff walk. Unfortunately, our day was cold and rainy, we sat under the tent and had a great time looking out at the water. Ca'del Bosco and The Chanler have come together for an enchanting collaboration showcasing Italian renaissance charm and seaside beauty. A family of internationally renowned luxury Franciacorta sparkling wines are presented at The Chanler's meadow lawn with sweeping views of the Atlantic. It's Saturdays and Sundays through September 4. 1 pm first seating, last seating at 6 PM. There's even complimentary valet parking. There were adirondack chairs with pillows, umbrellas and it was such a beautiful day. What a nice surprise to stumble upon. I will absolutely return to have a meal overlooking the ocean at some point. The dining room views are stunning. Such a beautiful spot in Newport! My friend and I had lunch here today and it was so disappointing. We made a reservation 1 hour before and they required a $25 per person hold on my credit card. Upon entering, the staff seemed disinterested. We just hoped things would get better. My friend ordered the lobster roll which came with a tiny bit of lobster meat and mostly bacon for $40. We waited at least 40 minutes for the lunch and then another 20 minutes before the server came over to ask us if we wanted anything else. We wanted to order coffee and dessert but we had waited another 15 minutes before she came back for the order so we decided to leave. She never came back to the table so we had to walk into the restaurant and ask to pay the bill. To top it off when we were waiting outside for the valet for another 10 minutes even though he was in the doorway talking to another employee instead of coming out, we had to open the door and ask him if he was the valet and to please get our vehicle. The view and setting are beautiful but unfortunately the service and quality of food do not make it worth the price. We will not be coming back here again. read more

Granted, most of the food is still pretty pricy, but the Chanler is an amazing place to come for a special cocktail, dessert, or seasonal hot chocolate if you're in town! Yes, you heard that right. Throughout March, the Chanler is offering a special gourmet hot chocolate menu served in the bar area from 12-5 PM daily. All ages are welcome to partake in three handcrafted cocoa preparations, and I can't think of a better way to wile away a winter afternoon in Newport! I came here this afternoon with my best friend and her mom (today was their third visit for cocoa!), and was delighted by the excellent quality and presentation of my hot chocolate beverage. Choose between the Dark Chocolate (topped with marshmallows and hibiscus whipped cream), Peruvian Magic (a spicy cocoa with malted whipped cream and cinnamon), and my pick, the Milk Chocolate (featuring a dark/white chocolate tuille, a chocolate chip cookie wedge for dipping, and caramel pearls on top of piles of luscious whipped cream). Each cocoa goes for $10, and they also offer mini preparations of Dark and Milk Chocolate for kids, which go for $6. I haven't been here in quite some time, but the opulence of the building was burnished into my memory. Every room in the palatial hotel was sparkling clean, including a gilded bathroom with selfie-friendly mirrors and a TV! Wow! I look forward to making the Chanler a dining destination from now on, and urge anyone who finds themselves in Newport with some time to kill to check out the Hot Chocolate Bar while you still have a chance through March! I came in on Saturday afternoon with a large group and the bar was not equipped to take our drink orders. It was a disaster getting the bartender's attention. We had a great lunch at the Chanler. The hotel is charming. We ate outdoors. The weather was perfect. The view was amazing. Our waitstaff were excellent. Hayley was very nice. We opted for the prixe fixe lunch. It was $55 for two courses and a glass of wine or beer. It's a bit expensive, but the view was worth it. You could eat less expensively ordering a la carte. I started off with some excellent oysters. The salads were very good. The entrees were awesome- my wife and cousin loved their branzino filets. I had a great dish consisting of calamari, clams, pork belly and hot peppers in broth with bread. The food was really good. We lingered over excellent cappuccinos in order to spend more time on the patio. Great restaurant with the view justifying the price of admission. After reading some of the reviews here I was imagining one of my favorite destination properties taking a nosedive.... hence I was hesitant to book again.....Thankfully those misguided adventures led by a woefully miserable few who have no qualms about flaunting their arrogance and entitlement, did not discourage my destination choice for the evening. We started our evening on the lawn wine garden and ended at their formal 8 course tasting in Cara. From start to finish the staff was gracious and accommodating, making us feel like our once a year trip to Chanler is fit for royalty, even for mere commoners. We stayed in a beautiful sparkling clean room with heated bathroom floors, tv in bathroom, comfortable bed, jacuzzi tub, and high end self care products. The only thing more I wanted in the room was to stay another night. The wine garden, which is apparently a new feature for the hotel, was more fun than any bar to relax at before getting ready for dinner. It gave my husband and I a chance for private conversation and taking in the views of the meticulously maintained property complete with gorgeous flowers everywhere and an unbeatable view from the adirondack chairs Sitting at Cara was the highlight of the trip from the wine/cocktail service to each individual course presented we were blown away with flavors and hospitality. Each dish explained and went beyond any expectations we had, truly rivaling our European experiences from start to finish. We can not wait to return next summer! ~~~~~~~On a side note for all fellow yelpers at any establishment (and posted on all my reviews this year)..... ****Traveling anywhere during a pandemic is tough and one should have a little more tact than to call out waiting over 30 seconds for that martini you so desperately need in order to take the focus off of your poor companionship choice for the evening. For $805/ night you'd think they would invest in good kitchen and bar service We got drinks to start. The Manhattan was basic and i must say Iv had a much more tasty drink for half the price. The 'lobster roll' was... Well, not sure what it was. I suppose I can take lobster from a can and put it on some bread and call it 'a roll'... or can I? The ahi tuna was good. But mostly because I got some ahi tuna with my salt. All in all, the food was basic and the the drinks lacked luster. Unless you're going there for the views there are much better places in Newport. So we've only been here for drinks but let me tell you how perfect it is. Private parking lot, nice staff that greets you at the door. The bar has fun specials with spiced pear drinks. They also give you amazing popcorn to snack on. Be warned, it's expensive but your paying for the view. We usually get our drinks and head out to the chairs outside on the hill. The space is quite classy and the cocktails are top notch, that is for sure. One thing my group was a bit perturbed about was being told we could not sit outside on the Adirondack chairs. Given the need for social distancing during these times, I could understand if it were busy out there, but it simply wasn't. Apparently their policy is that those chairs are for hotel guests only, which admittedly is a nice perk for them. However, we were paying customers too and across the span of the two hours we were there, only 1 couple sat on the chairs and they lasted maybe 15 minutes. For context, there were only 4 of us, and there are 18 to 20 chairs out there. Its the off-season, so you'd think they'd adapt the rules a bit for paying customers, especially considering there were maybe 4 or 5 occupied in the entire space on a Saturday. read more

Loved everything about this hotel. The service of the staff is incredible. The hotel itself is beautiful. It was our first time in Newport. The location of The Chanler was perfect. To put in perspective, it's the first building on the cliff walk. The layout of the hotel is adorable, with the old Victorian feel, yet it doesn't feel "old". Our room was beautiful, unique, and offered modern amenities. While on the higher $$$-end, it was well worth it. They also provide a shuttle service, which is priceless. I can't elaborate much on the restaurant. We only dined on-site for breakfast, which was average. If we go back to Newport in the future, no question that we'll be staying at the Chanler. read more

We came to Chanler, excited to get away and have some relaxing alone time. We paid $1000 per night and expected the room and service to be excellent as described in many other reviews online. The first night was a nightmare. Despite me explaining to hotel staff that we prefer a chilly room at night, they left our fireplace on while we went to the bar for a drink, and when we returned the room was scolding hot. Hotel staff tried to help but the only way to fall asleep was with the door wide open, which is dangerous and awkward. We had to sleep fully clothed. In the middle of the night the hotel turned on the porch lights, which made sleeping even more difficult. We eventually fell asleep, and the room cooled off by morning. We spoke to the manager in the morning, explaining that we had a really bad night, exactly the opposite of the experience we paid for and expected. We were surprised to hear that she hadn't been informed of the issue already, since we told the night staff the evening before. We were also surprised when she did nothing to right the wrong, despite assuring that she would. It's okay to make a mistake, but it is all about the recovery. The Chanler did not handle the situation well, leaving us feeling deceived and mistreated. The hotel bar and breakfast were excellent. But please think twice before paying $1000 for your room, and if you do, set your expectations appropriately. We will return to Newport but we will not be staying at the Chanler. read more
