Upon entering the Austin St. Truck Stop, all we could smell were FRIES. The Pickled Carrot was parked right near the entrance but, as a Vietnamese Banh Mi food truck, we didn't realize at first that it had other goods. Rookie mistake. For $8, we got a pile of freshly fried, steaming fries drenched in garlic aioli, hoisin, and sriracha sauce and topped with peanuts, pickled carrots and daikon, cilantro, and, for our meat, we chose pork (other options included tofu, mushroom, and chicken). The fries were delightfully warm, crunchy and savory, and I could distinctly taste the garlic aioli, hoisin, and sriracha. With every bit of fries, I I could taste the pickled vegetables... peanuts... and sometimes cilantro. The flavors complemented each other well. The Austin St. Truck Stop was lively with people and was a great place to be on a Saturday night. There were a variety of food trucks and cheap alcohol. Keep in mind that it's 21+ after 9pm. I've never had such delicious fries, and the V-fries had a nice Asian touch to them. I split them with three friends and we were satisfied with the amount and price. Came by East Side for lunch on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. The pickled carrot was everything I love about Vietnamese food, fresh, lots of veggies, balanced and complex flavors. The chicken noodle bowl was ready in 10 minutes. It was cooked fresh balanced of spicy, sweet, crunchy, savory. I felt super satisfied but was able to stick on my healthy path. No joke, deeeelicious banh mi that I easily could have eaten two of in one sitting. At an event happening at the Embassy Suites and some brilliant mind decided to have a few food trucks come over for lunch on Day 1. Great idea and while I was pained to have to make a decision between tacos and such, I am go glad I went with my gut and got the banh mi with the grilled pork. Funny enough, I am a big fan of banh mi but I really enjoy them with tofu - I know, I know, it's barely considered a banh mi if it has tofu but whatever, you tell that to the guys at Saigon Sandwiches in SF who make hands down the best tofu banh mi EVER. Anyhoo, I decided to take a leap and go with the pork for this one and boy am I glad I made the call. So good - the size was perfect (filling without making me feel sick), garlic aioli the right balance and only a kiss of heat from the what I think were pickled jalapenos. Finally!!! This is the place!!! So let's just start with the egg rolls... CRAZY GOOD! All 5 in my party loved them. An order comes with 3 and was $6 we cut them in 1/2 and all tried them. Then we all fought for who got to have the extra one. The FRESH taste really brings something else to the table. The other options were burgers, Mexican food, or barbecue. We tried almost everything. I love this place!! So happy they have more hours now. I usually get the tofu bành mi but the noodle bowls are really good too. I still need to try the salads but I almost always go back to the bành mi. In addition to the great food, Cuong and everyone else I've met who works here are really nice and offer everyone a stamp card so you can get a free meal after your 10th purchase. People should keep in mind that this is a food truck so don't expect a fancy place to sit down (although there are some tables and East Side!) and be willing to wait (usually no more than 20 minutes) for your food. read more

The wonderful things you've heard about The Pickled Carrot are true! And I was more than pleased to find that out for myself. I first saw/heard of TPC when I was at Eastside one Friday night. Unfortunately, by the time I worked up an appetite, they were sold out of almost everything (except salad). Anywayyyys, a few weeks later, I once again found myself at Eastside wanting some grub, so The Pickled Carrot it was. They were out of all meat except the pork, so my husband and I got the pork noodle bowl and the pork bahn mi so we could try both. I am SO glad we did! Both were amazing! The pork was nicely marinated and tender. Veggies in the noodle bowl were fresh & crisp. If I HAD to choose just one, I'd go with the bahn mi. The bread was toasted perfectly and it also had this really yummy sauce on it. We also ordered their pork & shrimp spring rolls. They were pretty tasty, but also pretty small. I expected bigger ones since they were $4 for 3. Overall, I enjoyed my experience at The Pickled Carrot & will definitely be back. Only reason for the 4 stars is the fact that they have been out of a lot of items the two times that I've visited (both times were still fairly early in the night), and for the prices. The meat was perfectly seasoned and tasted amazing but the bread was so hard and difficult to chew, it kinda ruined the experience (especially for a $10 sandwich). I've been to pickled carrot a few times and I have my mixed opinions about the place. First off, I feel like it's never open or it's so hard to find. I wish they had a little bit more consistency. I remember one week I was craving a good banh mi, and I called everyday but they didn't pick up so I guess it was closed. Pretty disappointing and hope they can figure out how to fix that problem. It seems the location is usually behind East Side bar (N Austin St) or at least the times I've been. The banh mi is great! It's better then the one at Viet Bites and it's so good. The meat is juicy, the toppings compliment each other really well, and it's a good size sandwich! I got the eggs rolls before too, they are small but good nothing too special about it but a good appetizer (I love any type of egg roll honestly) I haven't gotten anything else there yet (I'll explain why) but I've heard their Thai tea is really good too! Pickled carrot is so expensive! $8 for a banh mi?? I don't think a banh mi should be that expensive. It is a good sandwich but I've had banh just as good for like $4-5. I don't think it's worth that price. Especially since it's expensive I avoid trying other stuff because I don't want to make a dent in my wallet. Yum! My husband has celiac and I called ahead to make sure they had gluten-free options. Guy that answered the phone was very knowledgeable and they they had options! The Pickled Carrot is the best 'Vietnamese' in Denton. The eggrolls are not to be missed; simply do not sleep on these. I know they seem expensive and take a while, but they are well worth it. Crunchy and filled with fresh ingredients. The vermicelli bowls are also great, and they've got the nuoc cham (dipping sauce) down. The only thing I'd say is I miss the banh mis we have in Houston. We haven't found anything close to what we can find in Houston (or in Paris where the best sandwich is) in the DFW area yet. read more

I've gone out of my way a couple times to eat here. The sandwich is good and plentiful. The bread is flaky on the outside, warm and soft on the inside. All the flavors I want are present. The pickled carrots (duh), the fresh jalepenos, cilantro etc etc. Bahn mi enthusiasts get it. This place is great---I just can't get over that hefty price tag for a bahn mi. Before I even knew that this food truck existed, a bahn mi has never cost me more than $4. But yet, I'm being charged $8 for just a sandwich. Pork bahn mi, extra meat for only $1. Worth every dadgum finger lickin' penny!! If you haven't had banh mi before, the smell may be slightly off-putting, but believe me, it's worth a try. Pickled Carrot has the best I've had, too, with tender and well-marinated meat without the fat. Their bread is always fresh and crispy and their veggies have the perfect crunch and kick of flavor, too. Whatever sauce they put on the banh mi specifically makes it extra amazing. I've tried the salad and rice bowl before, and while still absolutely delicious and some of the best food in Denton, the sandwich is where it's at. The wait can get quite long during busy times, but you can text in your order ahead of time and grab a beer at The Bearded Monk or East Side while waiting. I'd recommend getting a growler from the Monk, take the food, and go and enjoy a lovely evening on the square. Casual date night done! Be sure to get a punch card... because once you've had one, you'll be hooked and will welcome the freebies to help balance your new Vietnamese food addiction. This is probably my favorite food truck EVER. It's definitely my fave in Denton. Their banh mi are AMAZING. I always get the pork, and it's flavorful, fresh, and the baguette is crisp and delicious. Their salads are also fantastic! All of the veggies they use are so crisp and fresh, and their dressing is among the very best. I really need to branch out from the pork, but seriously, it's so delicious that I never waver, be it banh mi or salad! Moreover, their beverages are phenomenal! On a hot day, I crave their cucumber limeade--so refreshing! I also love their iced Vietnamese coffee, which is so rich and robust! I am extremely grateful that this truck is in town. They often park at Earthwise Gardens on Elm, but you can also find them often at the A-Train station, the Community Market, and events around town (like the DIME store Handmade Harvest, Day of the Dead Festival, etc.) I keep track of where they are via their Facebook page--they are great about updating it. read more

Yes, I've already devoured 1xxxx banh mi from pickled carrot and I can't believe I have not reviewed pickled carrot yet. shame on me. I've had the pork banh mi, tofu banh mi & chicken banh mi here. All of them exceeded my expectations. But my personal favorite here is the pork banh mi. The baguette here is always toasted to perfection and the pork is juicy & succulent with a good balance of flavors. Not too sweet, not too salty.
