Great first experience here today! The employee (a male, no name tag) who assisted us today in St. Matthews was exceptionally helpful and went out of his way to make sure we enjoyed the ice cream choices we selected. As any employee should, he told us about the popularity of certain pie and ice creams which assisted in our selections. As a family we enjoy going to ice cream establishments wherever we are. I reached out to this vendor for our wedding cake. The person responsible for booking was unavailable via phone so we had to have e-mail conversations. It took over 20 e-mails back and forth to schedule a time. My fiance and I showed up for our consultation only to find out that she put us down for the wrong day. I know that these things happen so I continued to speak with her about our wedding cake. Once it was determined that we were probably never going to get to sample the cake we decided to do most of the consultation via e-mail. I asked about pricing since she had not mentioned it thus far. Our design was very simple, it is simply white butter cream icing and we're going to put real flowers on the cake. I was informed the cake itself was going to be $230 and the "design fee" was going to be $416 dollars. That's almost $650 for a three tier simple cake. After the delivery fee and all other fees the price ended up being over $10 per slice. When I brought this to their attention I was informed that they do not charge by the slice and that everything will be hand made. I would hope a cake would be hand made?!? Do most places use robots? While they do not charge per slice couples budgeting a wedding use this logic to determine if they're being ripped off and the Homemade Pie Kitchen needs to realize this. The pricing they gave us made our cake more per slice than we were paying to feed our guests per head. That's ridiculous. I went to the Sullivan Bakery last weekend and our 3 tier cake is going to be $250 and that includes all fees. Much better. read more

The pecan pie was very good. The small amount of cinnamon ice cream I had was good as well. Unfortunately it was not a scoop of ice cream, but several small scrapes of cinnamon ice cream placed next to the piece of pie. Probably equal to about half a scoop. Served by a unenthused teenager. Great ice cream. Some of the pies have too much on them like the Caramel Apple. Is the old fashioned caramel too. Sticky sweet. Teens are always the staff members and they are pleasant enough. I think they should rotate a special of the week. read more

This is by far the best ice cream I've ever had. I went with the chocolate chip in a waffle cone and it was delicious. My family got some pie and ice cream too and they ate every bit of it. The ice cream is homemade, hence the name, and the texture is unlike any other ice cream. A must try in the highlands! read more

Clean location, friendly staff, great pies, cakes and ice cream. My loss of star is that they use boxed cake mix. I mean same kind you can buy at kroger. With that I do not know of their icing, pies and ice cream I don't know what is "homemade" or what else is from a retail box. read more

I do believe this place is the reason my fiance finally moved to Louisville. Chocolate COvered Cherry pie and ice cream are the only things I think he would leave me for. HICAPK is an amazing place. We decided to get a little something sweet after lunch and found out that this place was actually right near by. We have passed one of these each time we went to visit some family but it was always closed by the we finally headed back home. Today was finally the day! When you walked in the smell was amazing, as you could smell all the fresh amazing pies. They hadn't been open very long so there weren't many people in there. The business was clean and the cashiers/servers were kind and friendly. We ate the double crusted apple pie (served warm) with home made cookies and cream ice cream and a cup of home made praline ice cream. We will certainly be back and try their vast majority of ice creams and pies in the near future! read more

I went here recently and all of the ice cream was pulled out because they had some type of breakdown with their machines.

The service was friendly and prompt. The birthday party and coconut almond fudge ice cream were spectacular.

I wish I could have tried all the pies but it was so hot outside I decided to stick with ice cream. The wait staff was very welcoming, happy and industrious. I am giving it 1 star not based on the food --because I NEVER got to eat any!! I am giving 1 star based on my experience. Today on a Friday lunch I arrived at 12:20 and there was only one person behind the counter to take orders, make the food, be the cashier, etc. She was alittle overwhelmed due to the 3 ladies placing their order had questions about the menu. Finally the one person working called to the back for help and another girl came out. But intstead of asking who was next she just went to the first perosn she saw. It took 15 minutes until someone was ready to talk to me and this is what was said: "Just to let you know it's gonna be at least 7 or 8 minutes until I'll be with you because I have 3 sandwiches to make." I just said forget it because I had an appt at the salon/spa next door at 1:00. I never dreamed a deli type place wouldn't be able to get me in and out within 40 minutes!!! What in the world are they thinking? A busy lunch spot on Friday at 12:20 and one person to do it all!!!! I just moved to the area a couple of months ago and have seen these all over the area--I was excited to get to try it, but wasn't given the chance due to not enough help!! read more

We had a chocolate chip shake and it was delicious! The atmosphere is fun with the old theatre chairs and oldies music in the background. I wish the prices were posted on the chalkboard so it was easier to determine the cost, but you seem to get pretty generous portions with the ice cream so all is well! read more

I finally made it here and why did I wait so long. I enjoyed my mixed berry pie with a cup of hot chocolate. Delicious. I enjoyed sitting in the high ceiling, industrial feeling, yet old timey shop on Lexington Ave amongst the other shops at the Vogue. Just to come in here for the smells was well worth it. The only complaint I would have was that the server could have been a little more engaging with the customers. Probably being so young and probably it being their first job, I would expect some shyness, but perhaps they just needed some time to warm up to the customers that are as warm as the wonderful pies they make. read more

I'm not a ice cream fan, but I love their pies! They have a large variety covering the regulars but also some very unusual pies. They do mostly take out, but there is plenty of booth space to eat in if you like. My only negative was that the pecan pie was not quite as flavorful as I was used to. We wanted a good southern desert after a delicious meal of fried chicken and found Homemade Ice Cream & Pie near the restaurant where we had dinner. This pie and ice cream shop is in a cute shopping area and a nice part of town. It was a chilly, rainy evening so we opted for pie instead of ice cream although the ice cream looked wonderful. We had a slice of chess pie and chocolate chess pie. Both were delicious! The chocolate chess pie tasted like an almost creamy brownie. The chess pie was sweet and custard-y. Today for Father's Day I went in to my nearby pie kitchen, Lexington Rd. to purchase a yellow/caramel cake. The cake was there and boxed very quickly however when I went to check out the system froze so I had to wait a while in order to leave, despite this the lady helping me, Lily, apologized profusely for the wait and offered me a water or any other assistance I needed.
